(Round 6 -- #6 on their respective charts)

And back to starting on pop, ok...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pgEFfZOV9GQ
Pink - Just Give Me a Reason

Gauntlet thrown down.  Country will need to get damn lucky to beat this one lyrically.

k-pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJBwBjr6Tnw
BEAST - Will you be Alright?

Hmm...these are both songs in pretty similar genres, with some decent harmonies.  I'm probably going to have to give them both another listen for the music category.

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID9WOxtJWlI
Hunter Hayes - I want Crazy

Oh, damn, country steps up to the plate with a song I've never heard before.  Now I actually have to think. :(

Both fundamentally love related songs, where there has been some issue inserted into a relationship.  For the country song, distance.  For the pop song, time drawing a couple apart, and needing to get things back together.

Quote
Right from the start
You were a thief
You stole my heart
And I your willing victim
I let you see the parts of me
That weren't all that pretty
And with every touch you fixed them

Now you've been talking in your sleep, oh, oh
Things you never say to me, oh, oh
Tell me that you've had enough
Of our love, our love
This is a pretty damn strong opening for pink; probably the best lyrics in the song.  You know, I've always heard relationship advice of "don't think you're going to change them", but what she's saying here is "I was changed, I was fixed by you.", which is intriguing.  Going off of talking during sleep...well on the one hand, that sounds pretty flimsy, but on the other hand that's a route into the subconscious.

Quote
I'm booking myself a one way flight
I gotta see the color in your eyes
I'm telling myself I'm gonna be alright
Without you baby is a waste of time

Yeah, our first date, girl, the seasons changed
Got washed away in a summer rain
You can't undo a fall like this
Cause love don't know what distance is
Yeah, I know it's crazy
This is a little more straightforward--humans have chemical reactions to touch which is problematic for long distance relationships.  Humans have an imprinting thing that happens when falling in love.  And this is all very poetic ways of talking about it, but it doesn't make me think the way pink's opening does.

Quote
Just give me a reason
Just a little bit's enough
Just a second we're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
It's in the stars
It's been written in the scars on our hearts
We're not broken just bent
And we can learn to love again
Eh, ok sure.  This chorus doesn't excite me too much, but it gets the point across.

Quote
But I don't want good and I don't want good enough
I want can't sleep, can't breathe without your love
Front porch and one more kiss, it doesn't make sense to anybody else
Who cares if you're all I think about,
I've searched the world and I know now,
It ain't right if you ain't lost your mind
Yea I don't want easy, I want crazy
Are you with me baby? Let's be crazy
Although this isn't exactly knocking me down either.

Quote
I'm sorry I don't understand
Where all of this is coming from
I thought that we were fine
(Oh, we had everything)
Your head is running wild again
My dear we still have everythin'
And it's all in your mind
(Yeah, but this is happenin')

You've been havin' real bad dreams, oh, oh
You still lie so close to me, oh, oh
There's nothing more than empty sheets
Between our love, our love
Oh, our love, our love
I don't know how I feel about this--there are definitely conflicts with the first verse, but both of them are explainable by the other's explanation.  Maybe she dreamed that she heard him talking in his sleep.  Maybe he's lying through his teeth and she did hear him talking in his sleep.

Quote
I wanna be scared, don't wanna know why
Wanna feel good, don't have to be right
The world makes all kinds of rules for love
I say you gotta let it do what it does

I don't want just another hug and a kiss goodnight
Catchin' up calls and a date sometimes
A love that revels and stills believes
We're the kind of crazy people wish that they could be, yeah
Yeah...straightforward, fun examples.

This is not bad, would cheerfully sing along to this, but it just doesn't have the layers of complexity that Pink's song has.

Lyrics:
1. Pop
2. Country
3. K-Pop

Music:
1. Country
2. Pop
3. K-pop

Thinking on it, seeing the lyrics of Hunter Hayes' song in print, they're not as good as my initial impression, but I was definitely latching onto something being good about that song.  Fucking dueling bajoes and dueling fiddles.  Pink's song has some pretty nice piano parts and nice harmonies.  Beast has good harmony, but the instrumentals are...actually pretty awful.

This entire topic has been rendered invalid by the lyrical stylings of Ke$ha:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdeFB7I0YH4

I'm fresher than that Gucci
Them boys they want my coochie
I say no I'm no hoochie
Yo homegirl hatin' I say "Who's she?"

Truly she is the Shakespeare of our times.

On a serious note, she should have left out the rap in this song, as the chorus is rather pretty and she displays something resembling actual singing ability

That's preeeeetty much Ke$ha's MO in general, from what I've heard.  Good chorus, good hooks, why the hell do they let this woman do verse.

Or, you know, you can just look at the stuff she wrote before she was famous:

Screw it, I'm having fun doing these comparisons, so...round 7 (#7 on their respective charts)

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbBhy7YrGR8
Cassadee Pope - Wasting All These Tears

And country decides to throw it's hat into the ring of "this song is an excuse to show off amazing vocals".

On the other hand, I'm trying to make sense of the lyrics, and I think they're crossing over into poppy nonsense land.  Like...she's crying over someone, but looking for them at the bottom of the bottle?  I guess that's just a clever way of saying she's getting really drunk?  Eh, ok sure.

Pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sa7Oz_25DNk
Selena Gomez - Come & Get It

Speaking of poppy nonsense, however....

I do rather like the song musically, however.  I'm not even sure what the hell it's sampling (Buddhist chanting?) but it works and makes the song pretty unique.

K-Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jAEJcYnpXCc
김여림  - colorring

Funnily enough, this is much more the sound I would expect out of country, since folk often gets rolled under the country label.  Very acoustic, they allow some scratchiness in the voice (which I'm sure they could edit out if they want to).

Lyrics:
1. Country
2. Pop
3. K-pop

Yeah, ok, at least country sounds like it's expressing the emotions of a real person.  Whereas pop "You don't have to worry it's an open invitation.  I'll be sitting right here real patient. [...]  When you're ready come and get it."  So.........basically Selena Gomez is a JRPG NPC?  Actually suddenly the lyrics make perfect sense!

Music:
1. Pop
2. Country
3. K-pop

Ok, this was pretty hard; had to give all of them a couple of listens.  End of the day, though, I am a sucker for a really unique hook, and with K-Pop and Country both going quite acoustic, but Country having the stronger vocalist, country wins that fight.

Round 8 (#8 on their respective lists)

K-pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FzZ1j_w2HyY
Rainbow - Sunshine

So...apparently there is a kpop group called Rainbow, and they are only now making a song called Sunshine.  Come on rainbow.  Also, apparently it's about a boy called "Jerry".

Song is decent, but hardly unbeatable; let's see what pop and country bring to the table...

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75ipkl31eXU
Jake Owen - Anywhere With You

Oh hey, a song I actually know.  (About half of these country songs I haven't heard).  Well...I'll analyze it if I need to...

Pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98NkWGbPAbg
Ariana Grande - The Way

Sigh.  Now I have to think :/

Well, fundamentally they're both "I LOVE YOU THIIIIIIIS MUCH" songs.  Ariana's song has MOAR WORDS.  That said, I can't help but feel that country thought about it, said "you know, there's a lot of these songs, let me put a bit of a twist on it.  I'll describe all the crazy places I'd follow you just to be with you."

Lyrics
1. Country
2. Pop
3. K-Pop

Are either of these crappy enough to lose to the k-pop song?  ...Nah, guess what the few english phrases included in the k-pop song are?  "I can't stop loving you".  "You're my sunshine boy."  Sigh.

Music
1. K-pop
2. Country
3. Pop

Generic forgettable but decent quality K-pop.  Generic forgettable but decent quality country.  And a pop song I...just don't really like.  Ok then.

Round 9 (#9 on their respective lists)

Pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_q8L8Tksd8
Icona Pop - I Love It

Awww yeah.

You know, putting it in context, this is actually better lyrics than most pop songs.  Helps that it's NOT ANOTHER LOVE SONG.  And also really fun to sing along to ("I put your shit into a bag and pushed it down the stairs."  "But I'm a 90s Bitch.")  Country is certainly capable of beating it, but...it's all going to come down to the luck of the song.

K-pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ORhTnfxtouM
로이킴 - Bom Bom Bom

Oh this is a pretty catchy so-----auuugh whistling.  I HATE whistling.

Country

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3ihh3mnQoU
Florida Georgia Line - Get Your Shine On

Wait, what the hell IS this song even talking about?  Oh, moonshine.  Whelp, wouldn't have gotten that if the video editor hadn't given me the helpful hint.  Well this is a reversal of roles--usually it's the country song that's talking about doing some fun physical activity, and the pop song that's talking about getting high off of drugs and making me uncomfortable.

Lyrics:
1. Pop
2. K-Pop
3. Country

Yeah, you know what?  I might be inclined to change the channel if I hear a song repeatedly telling me to take moonshine.  Whereas I could totally be talked into doing 로이킴 karaoke cause that song does sound at least a little fun...bombombombombombombombom.

Music:
1. Pop
2. K-Pop
3. Country

I wonder if country's lyrics might be biasing me a little unfairly against the music here.  I mean, 로이킴's song has freaking whistling; it should lose to just about anything.  But ultimately I just did not feel like even completing a full second listen of the Florida Georgia Line song.

In the mean time...uhh, yeah, Icona Pop is not -quite- Daft Punk for me, but not far off either.  Takes a comfortable win here.

Now I'm wondering what country station mc really is listening to.  Use of alcohol is one of the most common themes in country music, along with praising God and failed relationships.

Round 10 (#10 on their respective charts)

K-Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p69IXQ1NYFI
악동뮤지션 - 콩떡빙수 (Apparently this roughly translates to "Bean Ice Flakes with Rice Cake")

I like to think that I can understand this, because 빙수 sounds like "Beansu"--but actually google translate is telling me that it means ice flakes, not beans :/

But that's not the point.  The point is OMFG this song is fantastic.  Off the top of my head, I can't even think of a pop song not already used in the first 9 that could even challenge it.  (And frankly, the fact that it's about delicious food might even win it some points in the lyrics category; we'll see...).

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH7m3HMW0qA
The Band Perry - Done

OMFG, Country steps up to the plate musically.  I'll have to think about this one.  But Pop had better have some real dynamite or it's facing third place in music.  On the flip side, these aren't the strongest of lyrics--there's definitely an opening there.

Alright pop, whatcha got?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Km3wOjaRyE4
Miley Cyrus - We Can't Stop

Oh I see.
Quote
To my homegirls here with the big butts
Shaking it like we at a strip club
Remember only God can judge us
Forget the haters cause somebody loves ya
And everyone in line in the bathroom
Trying to get a line in the bathroom
We all so turnt up here
Getting turnt up yea yea
Like...I want to give this points just for being not a love song, but I feel dumber after reading these lyrics.

Lyrics:
1. Country
2. K-Pop
3. Pop

I was actually very, very tempted to put K-Pop in first, because it's a song about delicious food.  But the country song has a few too many clever moments lyrically for me to really feel justified in doing that.  "Mama always told me that I should play nice.  She didn't know you when she gave me that advice."  "You're one bridge I'd like to burn Bottle up the ashes, smash the urn."  I feel no such moral qualms about Miley Cyrus' song, however.

Music:
1. K-pop
2. Country
3. Pop

You know, I've been known to like Miley Cyrus songs in the past--nothing against her, but she's just ridiculously outclassed here.  Took me a long time to decide between the other two; I think I gave them both about 10 listens.  And they both have some brilliant stuff going on.  Like the elaborate sigh in the country song, after the instruments cut out...followed by all the instruments coming back.  The way 악동뮤지션 structures their phrases so that certain sounds tend to correspond to high notes (like ㅏ, and they're definitely doing something with ㄸ too, but I haven't quite nailed it down yet, for all that I can subconsciously feel the pattern).  The country song gives me chills as I listen to it, not dissimilar to the effect some Nightwish songs have on me.  On the flip side, the K-pop song is pretty amazingly cheerful.

In the end I don't even have logic for the decision, at some point I just stopped alternating evenly between the two and listened to the 악동뮤지션 song about four times in a row, which I guess means it wins.

Well, the thing is I don't mind addressing the subject.  For instance:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56laCEgsINY

I consider this song to have rather brilliant (and disturbing and chilling) lyrics.

What bothers me is when a song tries to glorify illegal drug use, and has a chorus of "hey, try some X.  Hey, try some X."

Round 11:

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUPfORkj2cw
Brad Paisley - Beat This Summer

Ah, Brad Paisley.  The guy known for complaining too much.  For those of you keeping track, I played the following song at DL-con, because it is hilarious: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6yQ9a-hJVy0

I think he might just be a glass half empty kind of guy.

And this time Brad Paisley is...complaining about having the best summer of his life.  Not nearly as entertaining :/

Pop:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8t7fLDtgtuE
Rihanna - Stay

So like...a coworker of mine once claimed that Rihanna songs were written by getting this one Sweedish woman to ad-lib into a microphone for an hour, singing whatever comes to mind.  And then producers rearrange the song, and however the sentences come together that's what they use.  I have yet to prove or disprove this claim.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqfTifE8_Do
2BiC - Return

And 2BiC goes a little bit country themselves, by pulling out the harmonica!  Except they rap in the middle of it.

Lyrics:
1. Country
2. Pop
3. K-Pop

You know, if I heard a K-pop song with Rihanna's lyrics, I'd be pretty excited about the fun phrases they had thrown in.  I'd also think "D'awww, they're so bad at English, it's adorable ^_^."

Music:
1. Pop
2. K-Pop
3. Country

Yeah, Rihanna songs tend to be pretty strong musically; this is actually weaker than most I think.  But like...still does some fun stuff with piano and vocals.  K-pop's entry isn't that exciting to me--slower tempo with harmonica.  But country's song is also underwhelming to me like...I don't know; feels like it lacks cohesion.  Some guitarist decides he wants to do a solo all of the sudden and just does it.

If you want to argue that radioactive is someone's social commentary that "we're all breathing in so many chemicals in this modern day society.  OMFG this is totally the apocalypse."  Then...sure, that interpretation makes sense to me.  I'm not sure if it makes me think the song is more dumb or less dumb, though.  Possibly more dumb.

Apparently the official line (?) is its about coming through the other side of depression (which actually makes a lot of sense), but there's a pretty wide range of things the song could actually be. The lyrics sit in a pretty easy sweet spot to be about a lot of different things (and taken in both a positive and negative way, given the technical neutrality of a lot of the language; revolutions can be good or ill, chemicals can help and hurt, even apocalypse can be extended to both something negative or positive).

Etc.

The thread I'm seeing here is that you enjoy lyrics that say what they mean. Country is great at that. Pop is, too, but pop tends to do that while talking about going clubbing, or doing drugs, or whatever. Country does it about life, love, death, and dogs and trucks (and cheap beer).

Alternative/rock -- which is what Radioactive is -- trends more interpretive, on the whole. Take Radioactive: the lyrics themselves mention apocalypse, and then use a lot of vague grungy imagery to tie into that. Some suggestions for how to read behind the lyrics: finally being caught/jailed for crimes committed; attempting but then surviving suicide; recovery from depression; the aftermath of a really awful time (death in the family, etc.)...

Basically, all the lyrics really tell you is that: something momentous happened; you're still alive; the world's still going. I actually think the one thing it doesn't support is a fatalistic view like you're suggesting ("the world's gone to hell and is falling apart").

--

But whatever. English major. I read lots of things into lots of stuff by reflex.

But whatever. English major. I read lots of things into lots of stuff by reflex.

Funny story: I have a minor in English myself.  At a few points in my life I've certainly played my hand at linking lots of stuff to lots of other stuff.  (For instance, while I worked at white wolf, I wrote a series of 26 essays lyncing random quotes from the Twilight books into World of Darkness Online game-design/production/shaders/whatever.  I've been known to take a two line quote and write five paragraphs about it).  I'm not incapable of turning on that part of my brain.

But like...I don't think that's the way radio music should be consumed.  I hear it in the car, or at a store, or at a club, and I maybe know 10%-20% of the lyrics, and maybe sing along to those parts, and maybe dance to it a little.

It'd be like...imagine we were at DL con, playing ridiculous DL con poker.  And it was my turn to bet, and I said "hold on a minute", pulled out a pen and paper and scribbled calculations for the next 4 minutes, and then bet exactly 23 chips.  Yes, this is something I am capable of doing, but it's a little out of place given how seriously the situation should be taken.

Similarly, in this topic with respect to lyrics, while I'm paying more attention to detail than I normally would in the car (where a full sentence might pass by while I was focused on the road) I'm deliberately not looking for a deeper meaning as that's not how the media will be consumed.  (Which isn't to say that my mind won't jump to some conclusions; for instance, when I first heard Calvin Harris' "Let's Go" on the radio, I thought it was a very dirty song.  Which...it actually isn't.  At all).

EDIT: And writing this somehow made me want to hijack a DL con Apples to Apples game by delaying my turn to do some pen and paper calculus. >_>

Round 12 (#12 on their respective lists)

Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJT0Suanqhg
Bruno Mars - When I was Your Man

You know, I like some Bruno Mars.  For instance, "Just The Way You Are" I felt was pretty uplifting.  And I knew some people who hated that song, and I was like "ok, but you're male, maybe that makes a difference; I have been told I have no idea how males think."

But like...this song.  I can't figure out who this song is supposed to appeal to.  Like "my ex regrets being a jerkface" doesn't get me all that excited.  But something tells me this song doesn't really appeal to men either.

K-Pop

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fafqw05BWAc
Nell - Ocean of Light

Took em long enough.  All the male K-pop groups so far had been slow balads with like one acoustic instrument.  (It's not like this counts as a full-on teen boyband even; they seem to be a rock group at a glance).  Regardless, very much loving this song.  The few English lyrics there are...

Quote
Just breath in breath out your dreams with me
Quote
I'm in the ocean of light

You know, for all that it gives me very little to work with, I like the two English lines it does have.

Country:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3v88o6OuOk
Randy Houser - Runnin' Outta Moonlight

And Randy Houser shows us how to do a Bruno Mars song right

Quote
Don't you worry about gettin' fixed up
When you wake up, you're pretty enough
Quote
Girl you never looked better than you do right now

Lyrics:
1. Country
2. K-Pop
3. Pop

Yeah, honestly?  For all that I've liked his songs in the past, this particular Bruno Mars song that has been known to make me change the channel.  And like...I don't get annoyed by traditionally annoying things easily.  FFS I've listened to Marisa Stole the Precious Thing on loop, and was a fan of Aaron Carter as a teenager.  And would still cheerfully listen to either of those right now.

Music:
1. K-pop
2. Country
3. Pop

So...usually I'm a sucker for Piano, much moreso than guitar.  But that's because of the way the two are typically played.  Guitar is often strumming chords repeatedly.  Piano often has fun sequences of notes.  And it should be noted, that whever guitar breaks out of chord mentality into individual notes, it tends to be pretty awesome.  Like...I'm thinking the opening to Thunderstruck, the opening to Crazy Train.  Which brings to Bruno Mars' song, which plays piano like most people play guitar.  chord-A chord-A chord-A chord-A.  chord-B chord-B chord-B chord-B.  As the only instrument.  x_x.  For all that Bruno Mars has a much more interesting voice, I don't think it makes up for the country song...having multiple instruments.

(In the mean time, Nell's song takes first place so comfortably there's not a whole lot to comment on).

EDIT: incidentally, nothing against chords per-se.  Chords are cool, they just don't compensate for a low number of notes.  ZUN, show them how it's done... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5efD_NyeKY

Mmm.  I think the song just has a really narrow target audience; guys coming off their first serious relationship.  Not necessarily to enjoy, but to identify with.  But the real lesson is that Bruno Mars should just stick to ripping off the Police.  He's damn good at that.

Miranda Lambert - Mama's Broken Heart

Miranda. fucking. Lambert.

Like...I want to quote this whole goddamn song.  Like...it might be easier to find the lines of this song that are NOT worth quoting...no, actually, I'm not sure there's a single line of this song that is not worth quoting.

Quote
I cut my bangs with some rusty kitchen scissors
I screamed his name ‘til the neighbors called the cops
I numbed the pain at the expense of my liver
Don’t know what I did next, all I know I couldn’t stop

Word got around to the barflies and the baptists
My mama’s phone started ringin’ off the hook
I can hear her now sayin’ she ain’t gonna have it
Don’t matter how you feel, it only matters how you look

Go and fix your make up, girl, it’s just a break up
Run and hide your crazy and start actin’ like a lady
'Cause I raised you better, gotta keep it together
Even when you fall apart
But this ain’t my mama’s broken heart

Wish I could be just a little less dramatic
Like a Kennedy when Camelot went down in flames
Leave it to me to be holdin’ the matches
When the fire trucks show up and there’s nobody else to blame

Can’t get revenge and keep a spotless reputation
Sometimes revenge is just a choice you gotta make
My mama came from a softer generation
Where you get a grip and bite your lip just to save a little face

[chorus]

Powder your nose, paint your toes
Line your lips and keep 'em closed
Cross your legs, dot your eyes
And never let 'em see you cry

Now this is the kind of song I think of when I think of country having lyrics.

Mariah Carrey - Beautiful

Quote
You're beautiful
Hop on the back of my bike
Let the good wind blow through your hair

Ok, so far not bad.  Go on

Quote
With an ass like that

Mmmm...nope, I'm afraid this kind-of killed the mood for me right here.

Quote
I like when you run red lights

Ok, I'm not going to claim the sentiment is 100% alien to me.  I've been in cars with people who drive a lot more aggressive than I do, and there can be a moment's thrill there.  But like...of all the positive qualities you could call out about a man when you're looking for one single complement for him...and bear in mind she only has about eight lines in this entire song--she only gets two complements...the one she chooses is "I like when you run red lights?"  Ok.

Like...alright sure, stereotype says most girls go through a phase of dating the dangerous guy before settling down with the nice guy.  But Mariah Carey is over 40.  I just have trouble picturing her on the back of a motorcycle holding onto some guy saying "ooh, run that red light baby."

Lyrics:
1. Country
2. K-Pop
3. Pop

Well obviously first place was not in doubt.

As for second place...I mean, "Baby You're my Trampoline" is a pretty low bar, but I think Mariah just barely slips under it.

Music
1. Country
2. Pop
3. K-pop

It's very, very possible the lyrics are biasing me a little towards Miranda Lambert's song--but the music does have really good timing to emphasize certain lyrics.  Then again, I'm also not really thrilled by either of the other songs.  Mariah's song has intentional static in the instrumentation, and instrumentation that doesn't really do much of anything.  Mariah at least makes up for that with a ton of vocal talent making the song interesting just for the crazy stuff she's doing with her voice (pity she only sings for half of it).  조용필's song though?  The instrumentals are a bit more interesting, but not that much more (still fairly generic) and the vocal talent is a lot worse.

Besides, I swear there have totally been Miranda Lambert songs where I didn't like the music as a side effect of liking the lyrics!  Such as......uhh...Only Prettier!  Yeah!  Never liked that song musically.

Hey at least "Baby You're My Trampoline" is pretty open and honest about itself.  Also wow, this would have been a fitting competition for Bruno Mars since they are both vapid and mindless acoustic pop like he does so often.

Bruno Mars song blows and is incredibly shallow targeting lowest common denominator.  Shock.  It is a break up song and a shitty one at that.
