DLC IX: Washington DC
« on: October 30, 2013, 10:17:09 PM »
Ladies and gentlemen, our long national nightmare is over, and/or just beginning: the new convention topic is here.

DLCon DC will be held July 10-13 at my home in Herndon, VA.

Transportation: I live roughly ten minutes from Dulles International Airport, so rides for anybody flying in should be a breeze. Any bus stop with "Dulles" in the name will be pretty close, and by summer there will be a rail stop about five miles away with service to/from downtown DC. Reagan National Airport is also accessible, but not preferred; fares are usually more expensive there anyway.

Housing: I have a townhouse, with couch and futon space to sleep at least four guests before we even start in on floor space. For hotels, again, anything called "Dulles" is within spitting distance of my place, so there are plenty of options; where to stay is pretty much down to whoever has a decent deal for that weekend, which we'll work out once there's a date nailed down. Speaking of which!

Edit: Owing to my work schedule, this will not be a hugenormous week-long con. I'm budgeting for Thursday through Sunday, with the earliest arrivals coming in Wednesday afternoon-evening.

So in for this. Don't really have any date hangups as of yet. Will be out of college by then, though who knows what the job/living situation will be by then. At the very least, I'm in my apartment until the end of July, so up to then is absolutely clear.

Yes, and anytime (definitely a con that I would probably come in early and sightsee for too).

As tempting as visiting Washington is, I'm definitely out. I want to spend a year without worrying for half of it about my long-term finances.

90% chance Andrew and I won't make this one. We'll see how the year shapes up. Will probably have more certainty come, say, February.

Oh, we'll just see about that. The road I take to work has been swamped with associated Metro construction at least as far back as I took the job. That was 2009.

Not sure yet but didn't have any problems with this one. I should have a little more time next year, so Jul-Aug is probably a good time frame. Spring is obviously bad for me if anyone is thinking of that option >.>

I think its safe to say Spring won't be happening.  The earliest a con has happened was late June.

As of right now, there shouldn't be an foreseeable issues with any time over the summer. If I still have the same jobs, I can also get us some incredibly cheap room rates at any Hilton property hotel if we need the space.

If its all the same for everyone else, I prefer airfare prices in June over July or August. Apparently they are cheaper overall statistically.

I vote for early to mid July. June is a no-go, and late July I plan to be hopefully not on this continent! :) I will maybe go depending on final date is what I'm trying to say.

Mid-July -- by which I mean July 10-13 or 17-20 -- seems to work for everybody thus far, so that's rapidly turning into my top candidate.

The earlier the better, honestly. Checking ticket prices in that general date frame, the weekend before July 4th is currently the best (6/26-6/29). Out of those two dates, would prefer 10th-13th. Would prefer to stay as far away from my potential moving date if possible<G>

Just gonna say that while I'm generally good for anytime, my preference is 10th to 13th.  It likely won't change whether I go or not, mind you, but it'd just be more convenient for me.

Just saying again, that, like last year, I probably won't be able to make it, although DC is close enough it may be feasible.  Pick a date that works for everyone, and then...I'll try to work myself in
