Rate that OST!!!
« on: March 22, 2008, 04:08:31 AM »
Its back! And we're just picking up where we left off!

First off, the old topic link!
http://www.rpgdl.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9462&postorder=asc

That's out of the way...

If you forgot, I follow a specific trend on how to do this which I don't feel like explaining.  But the last one we ended on didn't get enough raters...

Which is exactly why we're going with it again, mostly cause I know its a game A LOT OF YOU HAVE PLAYED DON'T TRY TO PRETEND YOU HAVEN'T...

...yeah, anyway, so here we go!

First off, reminder of what criteria is:
Favorite Song: Self explanatory; base this off whatever you want, its a general category.
Least Favorite Song: See above.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Which song is the best ignoring how its used in game, or how it is on a pure listening level, etc.
Worst Stand Alone Song: See above, only negative.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Which song stands out best purely for how its used in game.  This could be "Fits the scene damn well!" or "just works with the mood" or whatever; just make sure its based on something in game.
Worst In Game use of a Song: See above, just negative.

Most Memorable Song: What song do you remember the most for whatever reason.  Remember, songs CAN be memorable for bad reasons, or just simply cause they're overplayed, etc.
Favorite Melody: Face it, some games have good melodies snuck in there that are poorly done, be it due the game's synthing, the style the song used, etc.  Basically, based entirely on the MELODY, what do you like?  You can be vague there since there are plenty of songs that share melodies (especially if its the theme song of a game)

Quality of OST: How are the songs in the game on an instrumental level, how does it sound relative to contemporaries, etc.

Other Thoughts: Anything that didn't fit into the above categories goes here!  Yeah, this is a very loose category, just throw in anything you feel like.

Overall Rating: Rate the game out of 10!  This will be the only thing I actually keep track of unless popularity demands otherwise.

Game's we've already done and their ratings, if you're curious, in order of how we did them!

Breath of Fire 4: 6.46
Wild ARMs Advanced 3rd: 8.42
Legend of Dragoon: 2.42
Mega Man 2: 8.36
Star Ocean: The Second Story: 5.14
Final Fantasy 9: 7.41
Grandia: 2.67
Super Smash Brothers Melee: 8.00
Shadow Hearts Covenant: 7.56
Chrono Trigger: 8.57
Suikoden: 2.92
Super Mario Brothers: 4.40
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow: 2.00
Wild ARMs 2nd Ignition: 7.36
Lunar Silver Star Story Complete: 4.72

And thus, we left off with...THIS!

I'd make a comment about those who rated having to do it again...but literally one person did it, so...yeah <_<

You know, I never really liked the first Sonic game, so I haven't played it in ages and don't remember the music.  If it were the second one, maybe...

C&P~

Sonic the Hedgehog:
Favorite Song: Starlight, I guess.
Least Favorite Song: Spring Yard

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Green Hill probably, purely because it's so iconic.
Worst Stand Alone Song: Final Zone. Just losing the sound effects of the fight diminishes it.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: The medley I guess? Worked.
Worst In Game use of a Song: Labyrinth. Doesn't fit the stage at all.

Most Memorable Song: Title. Up down, left right, hold down A and hit start, then you gots the code!
Favorite Melody: Nothing stands out.

Quality of OST: Could be worse.

Other Thoughts: For a game with like 10 songs a lot of it's kinda forgettable. I couldn't even remember Scrap Brain, but turns out that's because it's pretty meh.

Overall Rating: 4/10 I think? Yeah.
CK: She is the female you
Snow: Speaking of Sluts!

Sonic the Hedgehog:
Favorite Song: Scrap Brain Zone.
Least Favorite Song: Bonus stages. Ick.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Never really listened to music outside the game here.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Final Zone. Helps set the scene well.
Worst In Game use of a Song: Labyrinth. *torches Labyrinth Zone*

Most Memorable Song: The title/invincible music, I guess.
Favorite Melody: The only recurring melody vaguely bores me.

Quality of OST: It's okay. Genesis often has problems here, and Sonic actually doesn't suffer from them too much, so that's something.

Other Thoughts: I always liked the first few bars of Spring Yard, but then it goes boring for a while. Starlight and Scrap Brain were two of the pieces of VG music I taught myself to play on the piano, not that I could remember how now.

Overall Rating: 4/10? What CK said works. <_<

Sonic the Hedgehog:
Favorite Song: Spring Yard
Least Favorite Song: stage 2, whatever it's called

Most Memorable Song: stage 1
Favorite Melody:

Quality of OST: very good for the time.  think it was mentioned, but it avoids all the weaknesses of Sega's subpar sound quality.  A number of catchy melodies, few failures, and even those aren't all that bad.

Other Thoughts: good for the time, a real classic.

Overall Rating: 8/10
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Sonic the Hedgehog:
Favorite Song: Scrap Brain Zone.
Least Favorite Song: Bonus Stage music.  Yep.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Scrap Brain Zone.
Worst Stand Alone Song: Bonus Stage Music. As someone said in chat "This is music?"

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Green Hill Zone.   Fast Paced tranquil song is perfect for Sonic's first stage or something (Even if this makes no sense.)
Worst In Game use of a Song: Bonus Stage music.  These are suppose to be cheerful...instead of melancholy and dull and generally uncelebratory.

Most Memorable Song: Green Hill Zone; catchy and the first stage.
Favorite Melody: None offhand.

Quality of OST: Worked for the time.

Other Thoughts: Don't have much else, besides that the music, despite playing the game a lot, really isn't that memorable.

Overall Rating: 3/10. Yeah, nothing really great or offensive, but egads is it mediocre for the most part and forgettable.

Sonic the Hedgehog

Favorite Song: Final boss song. Not much to say.
Least Favorite Song: Labyrinth Zone. IT REMINDS ME OF THE PAIN THAT IS THE ZONE.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Uhhhh... Spring Yard, I think. Although none of the songs really stand up well outside the game.
Worst Stand Alone Song: Labyrinth Zone, for the reasons stated on the least favorite song part.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Spring Yard Zone, methinks? It's a very fitting song, although it gets boring midway.
Worst In Game use of a Song: Labyrinth Zone. Argh.

Most Memorable Song: Invincibility song, just for its iconic semblance.
Favorite Melody: Hm, I like how the beginning of Spring Yard and Scrap Brain go, but the songs really crumble somewhere in the middle. I guess that the final boss theme still works for consistency here.

Quality of OST: Uh, it's... well, pretty middling and marred further by Genesis' unappealing synth. So.

Other Thoughts: For such a landmark game, it has a pretty lackluster soundtrack. I don't remember any of the songs outside final boss even coming close to wowing me completely, and the erratic quality of some melodies hurts.

Overall Rating: 3/10 works, yeah. Sonic soundtracks still had a long way to go back then.

Tales of the Abyss:

Favorite Song: Guilt, Duty and...(Second overworld theme). It makes the shift in Luke's behavior feel all the more marked.
Least Favorite Song: None. TotA's OST is generally non offensive.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: The meaning of birth. It's not quite Battle with Lord Blazer, but it's catchy.
Worst Stand Alone Song: None.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Guilt, Duty and...
Worst In Game use of a Song: None.

Most Memorable Song: The last chapter (3rd map theme). It really stuck with me.
Favorite Melody: The meaning of birth.

Quality of OST: Above average. This is an OST doesn't do everything right, but it does almost nothing wrong. It's not optimal for quality, but it produces a decent result overall. It's held back by the fact that this makes exceptionally easy to forget, doubly so if you dislike the couple of quality tunes.

Other Thoughts: It's better than most other Tales OSTs, though I feel the style was almost...done by committee? There was a certain amount of disconnect between the various sorts of themes. It might've been an experimental shift as well, I don't know. (TotA being done by a new or fresh team would explain most of it's issues, be it musical or otherwise.)

Overall Rating: 7.5/10. This is as about as far as this sort of OST can go.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Crimson Pride.
Worst Stand Alone Song: Can't remember.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Guilty, Duty, And...
Worst In Game use of a Song: NA.

Most Memorable Song: NA. Very unmemorable OST for me.
Favorite Melody: Pass.

Quality of OST: Solid.

Other Thoughts: Unmemorable. Saved by a few tracks.

Tales of the Abyss:

Favorite Song: Meaning of Birth
Least Favorite Song: I forget which one it is... I'll check and come back later.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Meaning of Birth
Worst Stand Alone Song: See above.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: The credits, maybe.
Worst In Game use of a Song: Bee asove.

Most Memorable Song: Time to Raise the Cross + A Place in the Sun  + Finish the Promise = that sequence there.
Favorite Melody: Meaning of Birth

Quality of OST: Solid OST full of good tracks, with no real flaws and a few stand outs. That which doesn't stand out is largely unoffensive but forgettable.

Other Thoughts: I can never remember who actually headed this... I know Sakuraba for ToS, and Go Shiina for ToL even though I don't own it...

I might come back and make a few changes with a quick run through sound test.

Overall Rating: 7/10

Favorite Song: Karma.
Least Favorite Song: Whatever song plays when you use the Tartarus.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: meaning of birth
Worst Stand Alone Song: Whatever song plays when you use the Tartarus.

Most Memorable Song: Time to Raise the Cross + A Place in the Sun  + Finish the Promise
Favorite Melody: meaning of birth

Quality of OST: Good, but the bad tracks really drag it down.

Other Thoughts: A lot of the better songs sound the same, since they are the same.  Thankfully they're good songs at least.

Legend of Mana:

Favorite Song: Irwin on Reflection
Least Favorite Song: NA, can't remember any bad ones.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Irwin on Reflection
Worst Stand Alone Song: NA

Favorite In Game use of a Song: City of Flickering destruction. The song nicely matches the setting. The melody instantly makes me think of the tragic story for the Jumi, and their pretty, dead city.
Worst In Game use of a Song: NA

Most Memorable Song: Irwin on fucking reflection
Favorite Melody:City of flickering destruction

Quality of OST: Top notch. No complaints.

Other Thoughts: All the melodies are stunning, the pieces remind of you the story, and they're great to listen to inside and out of game. LoM's the peak of RPG music for me off the top of my head. Just.. a great OST that covers up a so-so story and eh gameplay.

Legend of Mana:

Favorite Song: The Darkness Nova.
Least Favorite Song: None. The OST is outfuckingstanding.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: City of flickering destruction. It's a haunting piece that I end up humming even now.
Worst Stand Alone Song: N/A.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: City of flickering destruction? Sure, why not?
Worst In Game use of a Song: N/A.

Most Memorable Song: Irwin on Reflection. It's not the absolute best piece, but it's memorable as anything.
Favorite Melody: City of Flickering Destruction.

Quality of OST: Superb. It has a few weak points, but those are amply made up for with several epic tracks.

Other Thoughts: I don't quite dig this OST as much as a few others. I can't quite forget a few of it's bad tracks, even if the majority of it is jawdropping. Still, that's an incredibly minor complaint. This game was a peak of PSX era music.

Overall Rating: 9.75/10.

Legend of Mana:

Favorite Song: Song of Mana (Ending Theme)
Least Favorite Song: No.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: Darkness Nova.  More of a pick up song.
Worst Stand Alone Song: None.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: N/A.
Worst In Game use of a Song: N/A.

Most Memorable Song: Song of Mana.
Favorite Melody: Title Theme.  It crept up a few times that I noticed.

Quality of OST: Holy Shit! sums it up.  No song I've heard hasn't been impressive in some respect.

Other Thoughts: Shimomura is your Goddess.

Legend of Mana:

Favorite Song: No.
Least Favorite Song: No.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: For some reason, I -love- Southern City Polpota standalone. Can't place exactly why.
Worst Stand Alone Song: Uh, I think World of Mana to me, although this says nothing.

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Song of MANA - Ending, to me. But I think that song would make me squee if they used it as a BG for grocery shopping, so don't quote me on that.
Worst In Game use of a Song: N/A. Really hard to see a song that doesn't fit. LoM's soundtrack is a fucking work of art.

Most Memorable Song: Song of Mana. It -creeps onto you-. And then, suddenly, you're singing strange swedish/finnish/icespeak lyrics because the song just kicks that much ass.
Favorite Melody: City of Flickering Destruction today. But it can be about half the themes in this soundtrack.

Quality of OST: Superb. The instrumentation is very well done, and the synth is great as well. The masterful utilization of piano and strings brings joy to my heart.

Other Thoughts: There's... it's hard to explain why LoM's soundtrack is so good, but one listen and you're sold for good. It's quite possibly the best gaming soundtrack I've ever listened to, notable both on instrumentation and composition.

Overall Rating: 10/10. It's just that good.

Favorite Stand Alone Song: I can't pick

Favorite In Game use of a Song: Silence of Time/When The Green Flood, it is just so goddamn fitting for the final battle. It has that creepy yet enlightening feeling along with that atmosphere. Whereabout of Truth is a close second, the intro of Heaven's Light just fits so well with it. It really gave me a "Wow".

Most Memorable Song: Irwin on Reflection, Whereabout of Truth. Those two really makes a strong impression when they plays.

Other Thoughts: The music just matches the world, I can instantly replay the game in my mind when I heard the music.
