I'm kinda baffled at the rant against the final platforming section in Duck Tales, since I perfected that first try. >_> Past that, your assessments on the difficulty curve are pretty much correct. Hard and Extreme also remove three of the extra heart containers so your durability isn't so grossly inflated. Still, honestly not really too hard. And, quite frankly, I've always felt Amazon was way too unforgiving for a starting stage. Better idea to go Transylvania or African Mines first. I also forgot to mention Extreme's checkpoints are a -lot- less forgiving than Normal's and the full life restorers become single health pickups. And both Hard and Extreme lose the (honestly irrelevant) invinco pick-ups.

Checking the Internet, it seems the voice actor for Scrooge McDuck was in his 90s when he recorded the well-done work for the game, so yay for some age diversity in protagonists.

Magica DeSpell was voiced in the game (as in the TV show) by June Foray, who was the original VA for Rocky and Natasha on Rocky & Bulwinkle.  No shit.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Also, regarding Vesuvius as being the last stage: that's also a Ducktales/Carl Barks Scrooge canon nod. Magica is an Italian sorceress and her homebase -is- in the Vesuvius.

Final Fantasy Dimensions - Finally got a smartdevicethingy, so of course I pick this up asap. Trying to convince some dragoon girl that we're on her side. Doesn't go so well, so of course an NPC shows up and succeeds where we failed. No one is surprised.

Having to pick what jobs to increase the level cap of for each char is....interesting. I find myself waffling quite a bit, though for right now I'm mainly focusing on one class for each person(though also getting everyone to RM3 for HP+20%). Aigis = Warrior, Sol = Monk, Dusk = RM, Sarah = Summoner. Not sure what I'll do once more jobs open up, though keeping Aigis/Sol as phys and Dusk/Sarah as mag is p.obvious.

Sadly, the problem with that comic is that you cannot swim through all that money.  The ability to swim through metal so long as it has been duly minted into coins by some soverign power is Scrooge McDuck's greatest super power.

SSB 3DS Demo: I am about as laughably bad as you would expect for someone who hasn't played a Smash game for over a decade (and only the original, too). The fact that I can't pull off a throw to save my life with the wonky default control scheme isn't helping, either.

Gonna have to spend a lot of time in training mode when I get the real thing.

I tried the demo and I did find myself pressing L when I should press R and vice versa. But that doesn't matter, yesss playable Mega Man.

Dark Souls: finished my SL1 run.  Not leveling up didn't seem like a huge deal, I think next I'm gonna try giving up my shield or something.  The challenges I remember from here were Fenrir using fist weapons (seems way too hard) and Cid using whips (I haven't found any but can wiki it up) but if there were other fun ones let me know.

First whip is Blight town.  Notched Whip is... Painted World from NPC invader.  Best whip is tail from Dragon boss in the DLC so good luck with that only using whip.

I'm pretty sure "whips only" is way harder than "fist weapons only". It's range vs speed + way more options

Crypt of the Necrodancer: Finished one run because I got RNG blessed as hell. Got a blood spear (Deals 1 damage, regens 1 HP after killing a few enemies, range) + War ring (pushes back enemies, deals one more damage, best ring) + The double hearts that doubled my hearts + The healing spell + Good armor. Damn.

I haven't tried SL1, but it sounds less of an ordeal than one might expect simply because it means you're a pyromancer and have two slots for spells that are in no way stat-dependent for their offensive power. Two high-end pyromancies can take you a long ways against DS1 bosses! Sticking at beginning SL for most of the other classes would probably be genuinely tougher than SL1.

Whips-only was turrrrible. Full conditions for the Indy run were: all whipping all the time; no shields; no summons; no magic; no ranged weapons; only armor = leather armor + Pharis hat; and every item in the world must be looted, however useless. I did allow punching because Indy does spend a remarkable amount of time punching dudes; in practice this manifested itself only in a divine cestus vs skellies. I also allowed use of a bow for precisely one fight because of this scene: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7YyBtMxZgQs (It was Moonlight Butterfly.)

I think the death count was in the fifties somewhere. Whips fucking suck in DS1 (they're amazing in DS2). Start with master key, die a whole fuckton trying to get the basic whip through the backdoor to Blighttown, pump nothing but DEX and stick with that the whole game. Notched whip is actually weaker and bleed almost never matters against anything but fatties, guardian tail is actually the weakest whip and poison is fucking weak in DS1 (it's amazing in DS2!)

If you really want to make the game harder on yourself, then no shields is probably the most terrifying condition you can impose when you've never done it before. Block + poke is just such a basic strategy for like all randoms in Souls games.

Dragonfist vs. the world was also pretty fun but requires a lot of prep before you can really get going: master key + run to Great Hollow at starting level, then either farm drakes (ugh) or murder other players (slightly less UGH) a whole helluva lot, then run all the way back down to the Great Hollow to drop your thirty dragon scales on the covenant. Totally worth it for landing a OHKO vs Taurus Demon at starting level, though! (Dragonfist is not stat-based, so that + dragon buff + plunging attack = 2,000 or so damage.)

Yeah SL1 was easier than Fist Weapons Only and Bow Only, because of pyromancy and clubs.
Going with a 0 magic slot class and not levelling up is probably the hardest "normal" challenge.
Bow Only was only fun after doing countless other challenges, but not that great. Maybe Bow + Whips only or Bow + Fists only would be a decent compromise.

Otter if you've done SL1 what's the problem with no shields? I remember not really being able to rely on shields in SL1 at all. Two handed lightning spiked club > Them

I need to play DuckTales. It's been sitting on my gaming PC for months.

Bravely Default: Chapter 2 now. The game picked up considerably once I tackled the Thief and Merchant sidequests. Levels gained there made random-sweeping much more doable, which drops the overall frustration level of the game, which lets me keep my sanity without having to turn off encounters, which means I'm gaining EXP and JP without having to grind. All good things! I finished the Ranger and Summoner sidequests as soon as they opened (blitz, blitz, blitz) and now I'm heading back to the tailor to progress the actual story. Party is:

Tiz - Ranger alternating between Thief and Magic Fencer secondaries
Edea - Magic Fencer with Stomp
Agnes - White Mage/Time Mage
Ringabell - Monk. Looking for something else to do with him since punching damage has fallen off, but I'm not sure what.

Two handed lightning spiked club did indeed see a lot of use but I was constantly swapping back to one hand so I could use my balder shield.  I actually had to ditch my tattered hood and manchette to keep fastrolling but I thought getting even squishier wasn't a big deal.  Like, with cloranthy ring giving all your stamina back between strikes and an upgraded balder shield, you can just block through Sif's attack patterns instead of learning when to roll.  It also kept me from having to learn parry timing for the silver knights in Anor Londo and the black knights everywhere.

Just running it back without magic/pyromancy seems appealing too, maybe like an SL4 hunter run.  That would also let me try out rapiers.

For what it's worth, while punching falls off, Monk can use other weapons well (mostly staves where it has an S, and some pretty good ATK-oriented staves show up soon) so if you like the class it will continue to be relevant.

Phantasy Star 4 - Beaten the latest replay. Not much to say about this one, still an enjoyable little romp of a game. Took 15 hours, finished 0-1 away from standard stat topic levels, etc. I realised I'd never taken on the final boss with just four PCs before, so I did that, and it was suitably terrifying, but I won first try anyway (the key was to hand over as much healing as possible to Rune/especially Wren so that Chaz/Rika could focus on offence). 'twas fun.

Cave Story + : This game has a ton of problems I never noticed because it was free! Too much screen clutter, levelling down system can make action super-annoying, faq bait stuff everywhere, furries, etc.
I appreciate it as some Ur-indie game but don't feel it's very good in 2014

Nuclear Throne: Finished the game (well, one loop) with Steroids, Golden Hammer + Shovel until I got an Energy Sword later. Dual wielding melee weapons feels wrong but awesome. No ammo.

Smash Demo: Played around with everyone, here are my thoughts!

First off, game is Smash.  It's faster than Brawl, slower than Melee, and...hard to assess otherwise because 3DS makes the game feel very different than both.  Not sure if this is a quirk of the game or the controller, or a combination of both, but anyone who played the demo will probably attest to the game just feels odd compared to previous entries due to this, at least initially anyway.  As far as the characters go?

Mario: Never played Mario much, so really can't say.  What I can say is "WHY IS FLUDD STILL IN THE GAME!?"
Link: Definitely feels better.  Link actually has killing power now and his recovery is notably improved.
Pikachu: ...is Pikachu.  Some adjustments, but overall, still feels like the best "go to" character for beginners who is still solid in his own right.
Villager: A lot more fun to play as than expecting; his moves are silly but fun, and he's a little easier to grasp than I was expecting...
Mega Man: ...where as this guy is not easy to grasp at all.  I've seen high level play of him and yeah, I can tell he definitely has a lot going for him, just requires using all of his options.  Then again, he was promoted as being exceptionally unique and they got that part right, just feels weird.  one thing that hurts and this may be the 3DS control aspect kicking in, is that whenever I try to use his Slide (the down tilt), I will use Flame Burst (his Down Smash) instead, which is a pain since his slide is a good "get in" option.

So yeah, OCtober 3rd can't come fast enough!

Chibirhythm Curtain Call: Good thing I have this!  Anyway, just fooling around in solo songs, have about 3k Rhythimia, and unlocked 4 additional characters.  Started with Terra, Zack, Serah, and Ramza because I like all 4, and have since unlocked due to hatbotting Firion, Bartz, AC Tifa, and Ace (someone from Type-0.)  This game is pretty much the first game but with a lot more to it...which is fine, that's you needed for an improvement!  ALso, way easier to unlock characters which is a huge "Thank god" moment because the original Chibirhythm had one of the worst unlock reqs ever (need to get 10 of randomly dropped items? Seriously?)

THAT SAID, I will now review the Collector's Edition CD That came with the game.  This is from memory, so songs I don't recognize may not have their titles announced!

The CD has 20 songs on it, all from different games.  The 14 mainline games are repped, along with 6 spin offs.

FF1:Final Fantasy Main Theme.  Good choice, and as far as the "original version" goes, it's definitely way better than Prelude (which is completely absent on this disc.)
FF2: Rebel Army theme.  About as good as you'll get from this game.
FF3: Crystal Tower.  Solid choice; dunno if it's the "best" one, but still a good one.
FF4: Boss Theme.  Good choice, don't think anyone would complain other than "it's not Battle with 4 Fiends"
FF5: Home Sweet Home. Yes, it's not Battle on Big Bridge, but they clearly wanted a non-battle theme and this is one of FF5's better songs so...
FF6: Searching for Friends.  Good choice, much to the aiel's dismay.
FF7: Let the Battles Begin.  Iffy choice; it's not bad, but FF7 has so many good songs, why go for this one?  "Fight On!" (aka "Those Who Fight Further" aka "Still More Fighting" aka "That awesome iconic rocking boss theme everyone loves from FF7") would have been a far better choice.  This isn't like FF4's scenario which while yes, wasn't "the best" they still chose a strong piece, FF7's just feels very...middling.  And yet, it's not the worst choice on the CD simply because...
FF8: Blue Fields.  THIS SONG.  THIS SONG RIGHT HERE.  What the hell?  Ok, at least the FF7 Battle theme, while questionable, isn't a bad piece, Blue Fields just sucks.  It's boring, slow, long, and I know there's a lot of good music in FF8.  Even if you didn't want two battle themes in a row, there's still good songs like The Oath (though that might not be in the game?), Ragnarok's Flight theme, or something.  Just grah, they chose probably the single worst choice you could do.
FF9: Those I Must Protect (aka that song that plays when Beatrix and Steiner beat up a bunch of Mistodons on Disc 3.)  Good choice; may not be "the best choice" but FF9 has so many good songs, that'd be hard to do, so just getting a song that's good is fine by me (and after the choice for FF8's song...)
FF10: Battle with Seymour.  See FF9; good song choice from a large list of potentials!
FF11: Some song I don't recognize, too lazy to check, but it was good sounding and distinctly stylized, so I won't complain!  I was expecting something actually from the first game, so I'd recognize it, but whatever; FF11 has good music from what I've heard, this is just another one to add to the list.
FF12: That Dramatic Boss Theme Music that plays when you fight Gabranth, name eludes me.  FF12 is bit more limited on good music because it has a lot of atmospheric pieces that don't really work out of context...this song isn't one of those, as it's actually decent stand alone, so again, good choice!
FF13: Sunleth Waterscape.  No complaints, one of the more memorable songs from the game.  Though why they didn't just use Blinded By Light, I dunno...ok, I do, it'll be explained later!
FF14: ...pass.  While the FF11 song I didn't recognize, I remember it being good; FF14's kind of went in one ear and out the other.  Dunno if it's because it was bad or because I have no experience with FF14 music while FF11 I have some so there was bias involved but meh, whatever.
FFT: Antipyretic. ...who the hell is going to complain about this one?
FF7AC: One Winged Angel. ...well, they had to sneak it onto there SOMEHOW, might as well go with the movie version, so they can leave room for...
FF7CC: Price of Freedom.  This song.  Pretty much the Antipyretic of Crisis Core.
FFT-0: We Have Come.  I feel like this song would gain something from context; it's over dramatic, with a distinct theme (it was played in just about every Curtain Call trailer at some point as an EMS example!), but I dunno, knowing nothing about the game's OST beyond this song, I really can't comment.
FF13-2: Etro's Champion.  ...see Antipyretic and Price of Freedom.
LRFF13: Crimson Blitz:  And this is why FF13's wasn't Blinded by Light!  Crimson Blitz is an inferior version of the song, but not inferior enough to whine about it, and frankly, "inferior Blinded by Light" is still better than pretty much the rest of LR's original tracks, so if you have to put LR music on there, might as well put this one, and it works for an excuse to use a second FF13 song in a sense.

Overall, it's a good selection of music.  The FF14 song I don't know if it's the song's fault or my unfamiliarity with it, nor do I know if there are better songs in the game, so I won't hold that against it, the Type-0 theme is in a similar boat though more memorable, and FF7's theme probably could have been something notably better.  So really, the only major complaint I have is "Why the blue hell is Blue Fields on this distinctly not blue CD?"  As bonus points to this selection, no FF10-2 Music.  I realized after listening to the whole thing how much of a bullet was dodged there seeing as FF7 and FF13 got both it's spin offs repped in Chibirhythm on the disc.

Bravely Default: Chapter 2 is where you discover how completely goddamn ridiculous weapon specials are. What's that, Rusalka? You have a MT OHKO? Tough, you're also weak to lightning and have a monster family, so I can set all my specials to hit both those weaknesses and deal 9999 damage. DeRosa has no weaknesses? Cast Withering Ripple and give him one, then take him down in a turn.

Sword magic also falls into this category of craziness.

(Possibly I wasn't supposed to max out Norende this quickly. Not my fault I leave the 3DS sleeping for most of the day.)

I was the same, Shale, I maxed Norende in mid-Chapter 1.

That said I considered setting up specials to cream the boss to be an only-after-reset thing.  Withering Ripple being generally ridiculous meant it wasn't a huge deal, at least!  Rusalka did deserve some Lightning punishment, though.

On the bright side for the game's difficulty, normal attacks eventually catch up, and specials are not a big deal post-C5, at least on sheer damage.  (The buffs can still be worthwhile.)

Meep, I know your hate for Blue Feild.
But as far as I know, its reputation in the FF music community is pretty positive.

And, despite I agree with the 10-2 comment, they could have put KUON in, which is actually one of the two good themes in 10-2.

What reall puzzels me is why they didn't use Blinded by Light for FF13, and use soemthing more iconic for FF13-LR (say, the Ark's related themes) instead of a redux of FF13 theme.

Civ 5: Beat the game on King as Japan. Diplomatic victory. President Oda Nobunaga spread the glory of Moeism through the world and then became their world leader after nuking the shit out of Japan. Learned some new things that game, including the ability to resurrect destroyed nations.

X-Com: I never beat this game, so time to play again. Not doing Iron Man since I'm rusty.

Dark Souls: PS3 exploded, so this seems like a good excuse to replay this and beat AotA. Going Strength + Pyro.

Quick research shows it's not exactly high on the popularity list either.  Using Youtube Views as an example, because it's probably the closest we'll get to indication of popularity (these all come from the same user channel, so that should keep things relatively fair):

Force Your Way: 960k
Don't Be Afraid: 432k
Never Look Back: 208k
Blue Fields: 209k
Man with a machine gun: 1.26m (...was there really any doubt?)
The Oath: 207k
Premonition: 360k
Maybe I'm a Lion: 696k
Ride On: 150k (mostly demonstrated to show a "lower" end song)
Dance With Balamb Fish: 125k (see above)
Shuffle or Boogie: 203k
Eyes On Me: 790k

So Blue Fields is about "average" for FF8 music in popularity based on this.  Pretty strong indicator it's not high on the list of songs people care about.  This quick research shows that MwtMG kind of crushes everything.  I could look more (quickly glanced at "The Extreme"; it's about Force Your Way level), but I'm not convinced Blue Fields is a highly regarded FF8 theme.  Maybe not hated as much as I do, but it's definitely not a song I'd go "yeah, that's totally one of the most popular songs in that game and should be put on the OST!"

By contrast, I'm confident something like Sunleth Waterscape would fall closer to Blinded by Light, so while not the "ideal choice" it's not far off.

It doesn't work with all games because some games have one song that, no matter how good the OST is as a whole, completely destroys the rest of the competition it's not even funny.  I'm confident Battle on the Big Bridge would have that effect vs. any FF5 song for example.

Either way, nothing I look at suggests Blue Fields was a good choice to represent FF8.

As far as the FF13 thing goes, none of the songs feel like they went for the obvious picks, at least for the mainline games.  For example, they didn't choose One Winged Angel for FF7 or Battle On the Big Bridge for FF5.  The former did get in via the AC version granted, which may explain that, but then by the same token, that's why Blinded by Light didn't get in; they were planning on Crimson Blitz anyway.  The Ark theme I fail to call "iconic" because you spend so little time in the Ark, and it's honestly not that memorable.  Crimson Blitz is a clear variation of what is possibly FF13's most popular song; I'd say that makes it more iconic than anything else LR has by default.  Also seems The ARk theme isn't even in Curtain Call, at least pre-DLC anyway (post DLC, honestly don't know, didn't check.)  They were clearly using songs that are in the game, as a starting point.

X-Com: I never beat this game, so time to play again. Not doing Iron Man since I'm rusty.

Enemy Unknown or Enemy Within?
