ToGf: So obligatory tower dungeon is next or something!

Pokemon Soul Silver: Just beat Whitney.  Took me two tries:

First attempt, I have Geodude, who is female thus immune to Attract, go and spam Defense Curl and Rock Polish on the Clefairy, hoping Metronome doesn't kill me and luck out!  Kill the Clefairy with Magnitude 10, then get Magnitude 10, 9 and 7 on the Miltank.  Seems great right?  She proceeds to critical a Stomp and murder Geodude, and things go downhill from there.  Sadly, I could have won it as I realize as soon as I sent Gastly out, I basically lost the fight as I was thinking "if Gastly survives one turn, I can Curse and hope to use Hypnosis with Hoothoot and such from there!" forgetting that he's probably getting OHKO'd and that Crocanaw had Scary Face, probably CAN survive Rollout and that would insure Gastly a 2nd turn.  So I lose, naturally!

The second attempt, try the same strategy.  This time?  Clefairy's first 2 Metronomes are Psybeam and Seismic Toss, so Geodude dies.   From there, I muscle out the Clefairy, manage to Scary Face the Miltank twice despite Attract, and the Curse strategy works well, yay!

...also, Voltorb Flip is still the most addicting thing ever.

Bravely Default: GIRL POWER!
What the hell is this I don't even...

Anyways, mostly just filling out my class skill list by mastering classes I had dropped midway through. I have found a very powerful MT offensive setup (that I am eschewing in favor of exploring the remaining classes for the time being). Team bosses are making that MT more valuable than I had thought. Boss speed is starting to rise relative to 'average class' PC speed and I need to focus on methods of surviving blitzkreigs from the ENEMY side to a much greater degree. There are certainly methods of doing so, but I never feel invincible for several reasons, one of which is the rather brutal penalty on dying in BD (you don't get Brave Points the turn you go down, OR the turn you get rezzed). This has been present since the beginning, and one good strategy to mitigate it is to always keep 2-3 brave points in reserve so that if a PC goes down and is revived they can act immediately.

Discovered a nice Compounding mix that might help with that 'surviving', but one of the ingredients is 5K a pop, which is a bit much except for the most severe situations (in which case it is 20K pg to significantly buff up the party).

Bravely Default - Three crystals down, only one to go! Clearly the game is almost over even though there are at least -seven- job asterisks left to grab, rite?

Regardless, this has been crazy, crazy good. I really like the overall design and my class setups are now getting into their own (Tiz as a Pirate/Spell Fencer/Knight, focusing on hitting hard, debuffing and hitting weaknesses, Edea as a Thief/Ranger/Freelancer, focused on hitting hard, fast and accurately with some off-the-wall utility, Ringabel - WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT THIS PUN WAS INTELLIGENT - as a Black Mage/Red Mage/Summoner with an emphasis on speed twinking for optimum randombusting [which suddenly turned godly with the rise of Aspir and M. Attack +20%] and Agnés as a White Mage/Time Mage/Performer, being pretty much useless for randoms but crucial against bosses). I'm considering using Salve-Maker, but I don't yet have the item depth to work them out, though Mug+Prayer should see that fixed decently quickly for the time being.

EDIT: Also, the boss you fight to get the Salve-Maker asterisk is like just a Yuna away from being Bluelike. Holy crap, limit boss that starts dealing unresistable ITD overkill damage as soon as he loses 10% of a nearly 4x PC HP pool. Go fish.

Jazzpunk - This is a surrealist first person adventure game where you are a spy in a world where everyone is a kind of robotic abstraction of a person.  It is fun and kind of funny in a "sick reference bro" kind of way pretty consistently.  It is completely mind bending and fucking weird the rest of here  time and that is when it is at its best.

It's top three influences seem to be Ren and Stimpy, The Milkman Conspiracy level in Psychonauts and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

The visual aesthetic is always pretty consistent but the nature of hype game lets them be pretty broad with it so everything is always pretty visually interesting for a 90 minute game.

There is a lot of things I could describe from the game, but they don't really say much that would entice someone I think, really if you enjoy any of the three things that I saw as influences will inform more about it than an individual example.

Anyway it is short, weird and is really pushing for what you can do as a "comedy" game outside of your normal game as joke delivery mechanism (which is fine).  It isn't just Haha here is thing from other game! In its references most of the time, it is almost always interactive with it.  Not to mention puns, many puns.  I don't think it is a destination for comedy in video games, but it is a pretty worthy part of the journey.  The humor is really informed by the fact that it is published by Adult Swim Games, it wasn't made by people in that circle (so it is fresh input to them) as far as I know but it is the kind of thing those guys push.

I don't know if I would say everyone should throw $15 at it like it is at the moment, but I don't regret $15 being thrown at it as a late Christmas present for me like it was.  Try and keep it in the back of your mind when it is on steam sales if you are interested in this kind of experimental indie thing.

FF Dimensions: Finished chapter 2. I've been playing the game in 30-60 minute chunks, which is about all I can take before it gets too monotonous. The last Dark Warriors segment shook things up some, which was appreciated, but overall the structure of the dungeons (and the encounter frequency, even with my fastest character equipping Flee) is fairly grating. But hey, it's a touch game, they're made for shorter sessions anyway. Running Dragoon/Monk/Red Mage/White Mage on the Light Warriors, and Warrior (switching to Dark Knight)/Ranger/White Mage/Black Mage on the Dark Warriors.

SR: At last, I am the robots. 1 Essence. On that note, nice plot/gameplay synergy with Glory's backstory: she deliberately shredded her essence with cybernetic prostheses for the express purpose of eradicating all personal magical potential. You know, as far as excuses to be all withdrawn and stoic and distant go, I'm inclined to accept "I used to work for Satan and accidentally incinerated my mom" as a pretty reasonable one.

But perhaps more importantly, doglike recruited.

Bravely Default: beaten.  Final levels were 60-ish.  Roughly 2 jobs mastered and 3 others 3/4 complete on each character.

I basically loved the game for most of the reasons others have mentioned*.  The best part was the boss fights; each one felt really unique and clever.

*And then Chapter 5 happened.  I went from loving the game to nearly hating it.  At that point I turned off all random encounters and just said fuck it, I want this game to be over.  Perhaps a bit of an overreaction, but I definitely wasn't enjoying myself anymore.

I predicted final boss twist fairly early on, although the game led me to believe I was wrong in my prediction midway through.

Maxed out Norende after about a week and a half of leaving my DS on all the time.  Didn't even bother Updating Data after a while, it was growing quickly enough.  Norende gear is way better than what the game gives you in general.  Storebought equipment is terrible in this game.  A storebought-only run would serve as a quite decent challenge.  Also the game seems to be curiously lacking in armor.  There are almost always new weapons but rarely any armor upgrades.  Usually just accessory options (of which there are way too many, really needed two slots FF6-style).  Also those locked chests in dungeons are so not worth the wait.

I won't spoiler-initiate any discussion until more people have played it.

Cap'n, you're not going to like this but you should read it (spoilers obviously)...

I suspect you did not, actually, beat the game! You got the False ending. To get the TRUE ending, you need to buck what the game tells you to do and keep soldiering on until the count on Airy's wings goes to 0 (i.e. do worlds 2,3,4, and 5). You don't HAVE to do the sidequests, but if you care they flesh out the cast a little (Not so much in world 2 where it is just a rehash, world 3 is a bit more interesting, world 4 is completely different and zany and you SHOULD do those. The game is going to get a lot harder though... and you're likely to finish at higher levels

Interestingly I had the reaction you did through ALL of world 2, and then in World 3 I started loving the game again.

It'll be understandable if you don't want to keep at it, but should be manageable in bite-sized chunks. Also grinding is so easy it is laughable if you feel like doing that and avoiding sidequests to blitz the game

Yeah, knowing about Chapter 5 is the big reason I don't feel any urge to go out and buy a 3DS for BD. It's like they consciously tried to recreate the fail of FF3DS' endgame.

SR: Rogue AI confronted. Where will the newborn go next? The net is vast and infinite*.

Grueling mission. Wish I'd brought more than one plot NPC along for the airing of dirty laundry, but I'm not about to rerun it just to see different dialogue. Way too tower defensey near the end.

(*The newborn immediately trolls decker bulletin boards as people it killed. Ludicrous risk totally justified.)

Xenogears - Back from vacation, so back to playing this. Picking it up having just reached the Thames.

Hour 20: The Thames is pretty big, with a bunch of stuff to do. Not much plot and no battles at all, this hour. Instead there is exploring and doing some puzzles for treasure chests, and lots of children's card games.

The only real plot that does happen here is meeting the captain, who has more of that silly Xenogears style ("I am! A man! Of the sea!" with him turning to face a rapidly shifting camera at each step) Actually my favourite part isn't even him, it's a child who tries to imitate him, but faces the wrong way for the camera change at the final line and then complains about screwing up. Anyway the captain offers this line as the sole explanation for why he went to the trouble of rescuing Fei and Elly, and repairing their gears. He also talks about doing a lot of salvaging work for the Ethos church, who are about to become more important.

The card games are hard, man. My reflexes aren't what they used to be and I spend the better part of the hour on them, finally netting the rather badass Deathblower1 for my troubles.

Hour 21: Meanwhile, the villains have noticed us. Dominia leads an attack againsdt the Yggdrasil, and the battle is such that it can be seen even from the Thames, leading Fei and Elly to rush to the Yggdrasil's defence. A boss fight ensues in which Dominia recognises Elly and is enraged. She spouts off all sorts of self-righteous racist bullshit which Elly cuts through. The boss fight ends rather abruptly as Dominia decides that abducting Elly is worth abandoning her mission for.

On the Gebler battleship, Dominia prepares to take out her anger on her rival, but is interrupted by Miang. Oh yay, I'm saved by Miang! Miang puts Dominia in her place, pointing out that Dominia attacked Elly and therefore there is no proof Elly is a traitor. Dominia is furious at this but there's not much she can do. Miang, meanwhile, says some cryptic comments about Elly (I forget how much Elly is part of her plans at this point; I have to presume she is because otherwise why save her?), then brainwashes Elly and gives her an opportunity to escape. She returns to Ramsus and observes that while Dominia looks up to her, it is Miang's "job to be hated". This line has always amused me for its double meaning.

Meanwhile, Bart meets the Captain and decides he has a new role model in life. I guess it's an improvement? Margie shows up and tells Bart not to leave her behind. Bart tells her to be a woman and get back in the kitchen ship, so Margie responds by letting Fei know just who is responsible for getting his plane destroyed. I like this girl. Fei, meanwhile, is "so disgusted, he doesn't have anything to say...". Fair enough, Fei, fair enough.

Elly returns! Bart initially thinks they can't trust her (and does cite a good point, that Elly may be manipulated by Gebler because of her family back home even if she is a nice person at heart) but then decides he is a perfect judge of character at age 18 and says he can trust her thanks to looking in her eyes. ... well I guess that is pretty 18 of him. Elly, of course, promptly goes and tries to blow up the Yggdrasil. Bart is all "but but but her eyes!" while Citan reveals she was hypnotised. He also already suspected this because Citan knows everything, but didn't want to interfere since interfering with someone during hypnosis can apparently destroy their mind, and didn't want to let Bart in on the game because... well, would you?

In the meantime, Gebler uses this opportunity to attack. The fight with Dominia is pretty easy, but the one after it against Ramsus and Miang is easily the best boss fight in a long time, possibly thus far. It's still not that hard if you know the system of course. As with the earlier underwater Dominia fight, the battle ends with the boss indiscriminately attacking one of the PCs, as Ramsus unleashes all his rage on Fei (who still has no idea what Ramsus is talking about), damaging Weltall and flooding the cockpit, incapacitating Fei before he can even turn into Id. The only reason Fei doesn't die is because Elly learns her shiny new Aerods skill and barrages Ramsus with it, forcing him to retreat. I guess that's the end of any last hope she won't be seen as a traitor.

Hours 22-23: Fei's out of the team now. Far from the first RPG to do this, but Xenogears does it for longer than most games I can recall. Two dungeons and plenty of plot. I approve in principle of getting some of the other characters to interact without Fei around, but I'm not sure how much the game really takes advantage of this? The first focus is on introducing Billy.

Actually we meet Jessie and Primera first, so a few words on them. Jessie... there's a lot wrong with him, I feel. What we learn of him from this opening set of scenes is that he's a drunkard who basically left his children to all but starve, almost driving Billy to prositution. Now he shows up and chastises Billy about his choices in life. Yet the game seems to exhonerate him on the fact that he's a "good man" whatever the hell that means, and of course he ends up being right about Ethos. It definitely rubs me the wrong way.

I don't have much to say about Prim except that did we really need two different silent girl characters? Granted it's for very different reasons but still! Also her design is weird.

Anyway Jessie's first scene involves him putting a gun to Elly's head because he misreads a scene so bad that he thought the woman who just chased off a couple thugs and said "there there you're okay" to his daughter was a kidnapper. Oh man, that's a start.

Enough about him, we get to meet Billy! Billy's a pretty fun character. Admirably nice, and incredibly chartiable even to those of "rival" religions, and he does a good job of explaining what he does, and how he came to do it: because he had needed help himself so badly as a child that he wanted to make sure nobody ended up like he and his sister. He has an understandably very strained relationship with his father, and though he tries, can't keep the jealousy from his voice when he talks about how his sister seems more attached to her dad than to him.

Also somewhere in this he arranges to get Fei treated at Ethos. The visit to the Ethos highlights a lot of what they do: salvaging lost technology but also a lot of protecting people with their "Etone" templars. The initial view of them seems pretty darned positive! How novel for an RPG. Guess we knew that was too good to be true.

We also meet Bishop Stone, who is Billy's mentor and the man who saved his life. Xenogears rarely does complete swerves with perceived character morality; he's about the only one? (Hammer I guess, but that feels very different.)

Anyway, after all that introduction, as well as a visit to Billy's orphanage, we get thrown into a dungeon (a transport ship infested by monsters which stone sends Billy to investigate, with the party tagging along to help repay him for saving Fei), the first since... gosh, the Kislev base about five hours ago. Not much to say here, Citan feels ever more overpowered gameplaywise as he pads his lead in deathblows and speed. The ship itself is our introduction to reapers, once-human monsters who are reponsible for the death of Billy's mother. They're reminiscent of Redrum (who I suppose was one himself, actually?), kinda zombie-like but without the part of actually being dead so less completely illogical. Not much to say about them past that. We fight a couple of them as bosses, and Billy gets to show off his gear which is launched in that over-the-top ridiculous way that only Xenogears among super-serious games could get away with, as the children use SEESAW POWER to unearth it from beneath Billy's orphanage. Sure whatever!

Next time: oh shit the church is evil after all

I don't get the need to have a swerve in the Church. Doesn't the opening scrawl about the war establish that the Ethos are manipulating both sides to keep them at a stalemate and prolong the war?

Pretty sure reapers are indeed to supposed to be the same deal as Redrum.  It lets them both use Redrum earlier as a swerve with Fei like you noted and also retroactively make Solaris (? Ethos?  I forget who you should really blame there) look mega shitty because that stuff isn't just isolated just to that one region aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand it makes the sequences on that wreck that little bit more survival horrorish because of the stuff you saw in Sewers with Redrum POV and stuff.

Also I forget if you got Ether Doubler or not?  I assume you didn't because Elfstyles, but if you did, can you test and remind me if it double Billy's Square on foot as well as in Gear?  Because in gear with Magic Amps it makes his Square attack a ST Aerods, but I can't remember if it makes Square, Square, Square, Triangle any better than just deathblowing shit on foot.

Yeah I remember it works in gear because the Magic Amps make it really dumb.  I can't remember if it works on foot though because it could be gear battles being special.  There is enough other things with Billy's magic guns that don't work that I wouldn't guarantee that part is consistent.

South Park: Stick of Truth - This is fun enough.  The combat is a step behind SH2 for timed hits and the menus are kind of shitty (selling stuff blows).  Oh well.

Oh right, I misread the question because mornings. It definitely works on foot but isn't as broken for whatever reason. Xenogears math.

Edit: Tomb Raider. Been slowly working my way through this since picking it up on an XBL sale. It's fun, the atmosphere is really good and I like the exploration. Pity all the puzzles are shunted off to the side in secret areas, because it'd be nice to have more than exploration to break up the combat.

The progress meter says I'm at 50% through the game, but I seem to be farther than halfway through the plot so I guess that counts bonus stuff? Anyway I just climbed a ridiculously huge burning building only to discover for the second time that air travel is a terrible terrible idea in this game. Maybe we should escape by submarine.

I think the idea is to establish why nobody really suspects the Ethos of being Solaris.  They may be on both sides of the war but it's just to fund their charitable endeavors.  People aren't vanished just at other branches etc.

They don't need to establish why nobody suspects them of being Solaris.  Neither Aveh or Kislev know Solaris exists.  Also, neither of them know that the Ethos are manipulating the war to keep it going.  That's something we get told in the opening text crawl, not by NPCs in game.

Shadowrun Returns: I committed genocide* but you guys it was for a purpose, you gotta believe me. Anyway my AI buddy said it was the best plan and I'm sure the fact it was programmed for murder doesn't signify at all.

Dragonfall finished, and a marked improvement over the base campaign (Dead Man's Switch) on basically every level. DMS was pretty barebones in comparison, an alright timekiller but largely just functional on the storytelling level. This time you have a gang of companions who actually have things to say and are worth listening to**, your adversary is effectively built up as being all kinds of bad news, while the story remains fundamentally linear you do have choices of consequence within the straightforward narrative, PC skills contribute much more broadly to dialogue options***...so, you know, all that stuff PCRPG enthusiasts like to tout PCRPGs for being good at, they actually did it this time. Not top-tier writing or anything, but definitely satisfying.

And technically, mission objectives are much more diverse...although the challenge level is about the same, which is to say that while things might feel tense sometimes so long as you're not stupid generally nobody will die. I had one reset due to appallingly bad RNG-screwing with 70+% hitrates failing so consistently that I got overwhelmed by enemy reinforcements. Melee build worked well enough, nowhere near as terrifying in its raw stopping power as assault rifle specialist was though (probably nothing else could be). Sniper rifles are weird, hitrate directly proportional to distance from the target? So toss Haste on Eiger, plant her in corner then watch her murder everything from across the world. Excellent. They actually give you less total karma to spend despite this campaign being longer, though, which is weird.

Anyway, if anyone was on the fence with interest, Dragonfall at least is recommendable.

(*Then I reloaded and took a more ethical option, which felt much better until Computersis turned on me in thoroughly disturbing fashion.)

(**One of your buds is a stoic lesbian cyborg with Wolverine claws, which is like so many Cid tropes smashed together that I don't even know where to start.)

(***Though I kinda regret statting up a brute, as my particular build got little mileage out of this beyond occasionally breaking stuff or threatening people. Tempted to someday import my DMS character to smash the hell out of everything and take all those other options, also shoot for a TIME PARADOX on that first mission.)

I started it up the other day and haven't finished, but did mean to comment that the big guy in the opening mission seems to feel when you get his health down low enough.   You can do it with using summons that one of the party members have.    Might be able to kill him as he leaves, but I was in rough enough state and lost control of the elemental that I had summoned so I couldn't manage it.

That is one of many reasons I don't summon elementals. I sorta got use out of one being a good doorstop in the Aztechnology mission, but that's about it.

EDIT: in fairness I guess they could be of more use when you have 3AP per turn to throw around, but before that docking Dietrich 1AP a turn to keep a summon running means he can't cast Haste, and no Haste is sadface.

These ones are generally pretty okay chance of doing what you are after.  Mine only failed on like fifth turn of use when I was starting to push 24% chance of failure when going for 4 AP for it.  I was rolling big to try and win the encounter and the odds are stacked in your favour.
