Huh okay this is going to be interesting game to pick which one you think it is I will dislike that you want to go with.
Reba McIntireBecause if it is this, yeah I hated this when it was Shania Twain - Man! I Feel Like A Woman and I don't loathe it like I did as a pre-teen (yes I have been obsessed with music for most of my life), but it still hits all my "Nope not interested" button. It is pop country doing a mindless party track. Like most mindless party tracks I don't like it needs way more dirty bass samples.
HenryHenry (and I think Super Junior in general?) have always been high on my "that's okay for K-Pop" when they have come up from memory. I really dig the really organic minimalist use of slap guitar here, using it as a just another instrument in an entire track instead of it being the entirety of the instrumentation in a track.
The music film clip makes me think two things. Either it is a weird super cut of High School Musical 4 or it is empassioned plea song telling people not to show random people pictures of your dick or it will fuck up your rep around school.
It is good but completely teflon. We are in a world where I am waiting for a Florence + The Machine album. Teflon okay written songs with no bite are not sufficing. Everything is being held up against How Big How Blue and being found completely wanting against What Kind of Man.
Red VelvetHoly shit cutting a cake into sixths? But there is 5 girls in the band...........
I really hope this is the track you meant because this is great. This song is 100% about what it says on the cover and gives no fucks. It has a "You scream, I scream!" line in it. I don't care if there is ACTUALLY subtext in the lyrics that I don't understand because all that the title says is "This is going to be ridiculously sweet and stupid" and it is dumb dumb dumb cynical corporate pop and this is litreally everything that I want K-Pop to be. It COULD use more dirty bass, but the rest of the samples and the fact that the entire song is made up of like 4 different 3 or so bar beats bolted together.
For reals though this should be the track just on the strenght of light up feather jackets (sleaves? I don't know how much actual coat there is to that). Don't even get me start on how actually legit cool the plaid half coats they have on are.
oh my god oh my god oh my god there is a
9 minute long reaction vid that autoplayed afterwards. This is the greatest thing.
Also I dig that my obsession with the fashion in these clips is totally validated.
Maybe I really am the target audience for K-Pop girl groups after all!Meghan TrainorSigh. Why wasn't this on the list before the last one. Because seriously, if I had seen this first? You would have got a big post about how I dig the outfits (Greece as fuuuuuuuuck), but they just don't compete with light up feather jackets.
The song is pretty cool and highlights what I like in a track. It hits a few things that make you go errrrrrrrr that isn't super "feminist", but not because that isn't a message I want put out there. It is a song from a female perspective and it isn't idealising her. She clearly has a few off kilter opinions, but it is a fun catchy song. It knows what it is doing and she owns it. That is pretty much on par of Meghan Trainor of course. The more she puts out the more I am less sure that All About That Bass was an accident, because if she was she is capitalising on it HARD. Everything is constantly on message and hammers it home. I don't think she is the strongest talent in the space of female vocalist centric retro style stuff that is floating around for a few years, but she sure as shit has one of the strongest personalities and most on point messages from what she is putting out.
Oliver HeldensSaw Spinnin' Records, knew this was our party track for the week. Anthem break at 1:02 actually hit me with a strong enough bass beat that I was happy. It isn't stupid enough for me to get my dumb party track with filthy bass samples 10/10 vote, but hands down this is the track I am most likely to listen to multiple times and would be what I would have been listening to all week.
羽ばたけ翼Hahahaha okay I guess r generic rock anime openings are making a come back?
Is Valkrie Profile getting a live action movie made out of it or something?
I love the part where they have one of the singers cover her face with her hands and they super impose other singer's faces over her hands. This is pretty shallow (This is pretty much straight the formula used for anime openings) and silly I really dig it, but it has way less amazing outfits than the K-Pop competition this week.
The way lower production value is really endearing, but not enough to kick it up over light up feather jackets.
My pick of the week is Red Velvet on the strenght of... well not really any strenghts really. Meghan Trainor is easily the strongest musically, Oliver Heldens is similarly hands down the thing I would listen to the most personally, but yeah. I fucking love something as bombastic and completely self aware as Red Velvet are.
