Time To Say Goodbye - RWBY Volume 2 Theme - Jeff Williams + Casey Lee Williams.

This is some pretty textbook late 90s/early 2000s poppy metal. Somewhere between an Anime opening and Evanesence. I can see why you would listen to it a fair bit. The drums feel a bit drum machiney to me? Not sure if it is or not though. Its just feels a bit canned.

Equilibrium - Wirthause Gaudi

You chose well. This is also probably the best a metal track will go over with your broader audience I think. It is a fun track and is metal as fuck underneath (and over the top of) the polka beat. I dig this a lot.

15& "Sugar" M/V

So this week K-Pop had a funk track? It... lacks like so much of the body of a real funk track. There is way way way way way way way less sex than a normal funk track. The Bass is also played tuned up a lot more than normal for a funk track, but hey its not a terrible pop track. Completely fairy floss track, but it isn't atrocious. It isn't even close to the best K-Pop mimics an older western style you have spotted though.

Within Temptation - And We Run ft. Xzibit

This is like a gift that Super would give Dhyer. I am genuinely interested in what Dhyer thinks of this track. Yo dog I heard you liked Symphonic metal with female vocalists. So I took your symphonic metal track with a female vocalist and put Xzibit in it. That said, it is pretty much better than the last time we got Rap/Metal fusion going on. Because the Rap/Metal fusion happening in the late 90s we Numetal and yeah. Numetal was a special time. Even if I like stuff from that era there is so much dirty dirty stuff from then that just wasn't good and didn't age outside of the 8 month period they came out in. The Rap/Metal stuff was some of the worst (and was on the tail end as Rap was really starting to launch massively like just before The Eminem Show was coming out, so riding on the coattails of the new hotness).

So anyway, this isn't bad! I don't hope to see a ton of it again because many bad memories. That said, Within Temptation is a pretty good group to do it with and Xzibit is still pretty legit even if we forget it nowadays because of Pimp My Ride + Internet.

DJ Earworm - Mash Up for What

This is pretty masterfully put together. I would say its not better than the sum of its parts. I already talked about how while Ariana Grande feat. Iggy Azalea - Problem is not FOR me, it is a well put together track. I assume Iggy Azalea track is well put together because she is fucking talented. Checking out the DJ Snake feat Little Jon - Turn Down for What... that thing is a masterpiece of video + song. Everything amazing in the film clip comes from that. Amazing.

I am not really a fan of Pharell Williams. Not sure I can really pinpoint it. Might just be that Happy is kind of lacking in depth and is over exposed? Dunno. I know it is stupidly popular though.

Jason Derulo track definitely massively pulls down the average though, but not enough to make this Mashup better than the average of the other 3 tracks that I rate pretty good by themselves either first hand or just taking them by rep. 2 Chainz really should stop slumming it like that track though.

To be fair, it doesn't necessarily need to be, it just needs to be better than the other songs this week. Which...musically I was thinking it was 1st or 2nd, and just thinking in terms of how to mix things up from last week, last week was very serious business artistic, and this was very laid back and cheerful.

Honestly, I liked the rap parts. Xzibit's deep voice is a fun contrast to the high notes typical in Within Temptation music, and the rap itself is actually good rap. Hmmm...there's three songs in the mashup I like (Pharell, Ariana Grande+Iggy, and another Iggy track). And a bunch of songs I don't really like, but which have hooks that I do like. For instance I'm not a huge fan of the track "Turn Down for What", it's fairly spartan as a track (a beat line, and some repeated vocal lines...although the vocal lines are very memorable) but mix it with some other music and it's good. The Iggy rap I think is probably improved, since Iggy does have this tendency to rap with very little background music, so the beat is definitely improved for that one. And there's aspects of Jason Derulo's song I like, such as the hook "Get Jazzy on me" and the instrumentation. I would prefer it if Jason Derulo's chorus wasn't the focal point, though. Like...maybe use a different chorus? Ariana maybe? "I've got one less problem without ya." "Turn down for what??" I guess that doesn't flow as well as a sentence. I will say that Jason Derulo's chorus is at least better than his verses, but that's not saying much.

Actually, one criticism I'd give this as a mashup is that Ariana did not mesh well with Jason Derulo at times when they used vocals from both. Just did not really feel like the same song; the keys didn't really line up or something.

Most certainly, more praise for the other ones the a criticism of this one. It is a catchy track and your criteria are "this week" and "listened to it a lot", which it definitely is hooked to fall into listening to it a lot. Like I said it is a catchy track.

Again, Xzibit's bit is legit, it really works and Xzibit surprising me is way more because of his career outside of music. It catching me off guard is entirely on me. I just really wanted to work a "yo dog" in there.

The Super reference is more about how Super is really weird.

Alsoin the audio output... That is probably something good to keep in mind yeah. I listen to stuff either on my headphones or through my speaker setup on my PC which has a woofer etc (not great speakers, but serviceable). I think even the Within Temptation parts of the track would suffer from tinny laptop speakers. Metal is not something that translates well when you lose chunks of the audio range and mash everything tougher because of how much they emphasise tempo and go with heavy bass and high notes on lead. And there is already the common complaint that instruments are mashed together too much even before it is squeezed out of two really close together tiny stereo speakers.

There is definitely a thing to picking for your target audience, there is some advice from an old producer back in the day who said to listen to your album on a shitty set of speakers (and these days through some cheap headphones after compressing to 128k mp3 I suppose) because that is how like 80% of your market will hear it.

Edit - and with things like Arch Enemy showing up, I am looking forward to the new In Flames album coming out and seeing what you think of singles off that.

Edit 2 - I think you are feeling the right thing, War Eternal seems like the better track than You Will Know My Name. Both are a bit more in line with my tastes in metal than your usual hits (Though I still am listening to Deathstars).

War Eternal came really, really close to beating Lady Gaga (honestly felt that War Eternal was the clear better track musically that week; I really liked it. Just...thematic reasons to choose Gaga). So...yeah, it's good. So this track...C+ is like 2 listens to War Eternal's 50-100 listens. We're talking like...two orders of magnitude

Deathstars is still a very memorable track to me yeah. Can't say I'm regretting picking the Arianna track, though. There were target audience concerns with the Deathstars track, and the Arianna track is doing very well in the charts (which...Arianna hadn't done much on the charts in a long time, so correctly guesssing a hit before it was released to radio stations feels good and stuff).

Funnily enough, I felt like Wursthaus Gaudi translated reasonably well when played on laptop speakers. Probably because you can follow the tempo by listening to the polka music. Incidentally, my dad had this to say about Wursthaus Gaudi:

N-Trigue feat. Play N Skillz, Pitbull & Natasha - Scream It

It is better than a standalone Pitbull song but I still don't like it. Generic party tracks need to be really good to get a bite from me though.

Clean Bandit - Heart on Fire

This was a pretty sleek track. Nice minimalist instrumentation and clean vocals. Fun basic building film clip (with lyrics as the video! You know how I love that). This one rates pretty solidly, but doesn't really hit home with me. it is damn well made and I have been meaning to check out Clean Bandit after seeing their album chart.

DEATHSTARS - Explode

I enjoy this, but it really isn't as good as Devil's Toys. It does hammer home that I am probably going to buy the album if I see it though. Hmmmm I don't think it is really one I would feel you would have much to talk about? The lyrics video isn't that great either and while a good chance for you to talk about metal lyrics, this one isn't lyrically that inspired (especially compared to Devil's Toys!). The best line is probably Take aim, head and heart. That is a good one, but yeah.

It is one of those "Good if you like the band" tracks rather than one to introduce people to it sort of things. A textbook album track.

Arch Enemy - No More Regrets.

This is a pretty solid metal track. It isn't the best Arch Enemy track we have talked about this month, but it is solid and I think an easier platform to really discuss metal with people (vocals are pretty clear and the song structure is very very basic). If you wanted a starting point to start discussing metal with people that don't really know it (and maybe help them reflect on Wirshaust Gaudi?) I think it works pretty well.

With the amount you are hitting up Arch Enemy and some other metal acts I do think you have room to expand out a bit. I think you would like some other heavy stuff that uses clean vocals amongst the growl. I don't think you will instantly fall in love with Aversion's Crown or Parkway Drive, but I think if you run into In Flames tracks you might actually really dig them.

Mika - Boum Boum Boum.

This is not a bad little pop track. Pop music in French hits right places in my brain for some reason, but I do think it is held back by being too repetitive. I think I get what they are going for with it, but I don't think it really ranks it enough to be best of the week. It is definitely top half of these six! Just not enough to really ever get past number 3 of 6 to me.
PSY - HANGOVER feat. Snoop Dogg M/V

Man this song is duuuuuumb. It is a simple beat repeated on loop a bunch with Snoop just stomping through dropping in a verse every now and then.

which is to say that, of course you should pick this holy crap is it good. I don't have a bunch to say about it but it is really well put together and Snoop is amazing. Psy and Snoop together is pretty much maximum Pimp factor in a single video. It wouldn't even have to be good to warrant talking about, but it is a solid drinking song.

This is a super fantastic ambient track! The film clip is also pretty awesome. I think Alex will really dig this one knowing he is listening along. Highly recommend listening to a few times. This definitely could easily be the track you are talking about being sure on (without going deeper in the list), but I am not sure how much we have really talked about my taste in electronic music since you started this other than Dubstep stuff. But you could pick it up from comments previously obviously since my taste in music is pretty well documented.

Yuna - Mountains

Way better than her songs in FFX-2. Hits me right in my weakness for female vocalists of this style (Minimal instrumentation, carried on the strength of their vocals without trying to turn every track into vocal gymnastics and highlighting lyrics).

Mary J. Blige - A Night to Remember

Kind of like this! She doesn't abuse a held note as much as she could, but it is also a pretty shallow track. It isn't bad. Anything with a funk guitar still will get a bit of love from me even if it is a thing to cash in on a little after Daft Punk's last album. It isn't bad, it just doesn't do much for me. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on the radio, but I wouldn't really throw it in a playlist.

[MV] LENA PARK(박정현) _ Double Kiss(더블키스)

Okay you are like actively trying to make me a hypocrite now! This is a pretty busy funk guitar track that rides the strength of a female vocalist and it is shallow as hell. I like it.

I might like it more than the Yuna track even. It is a pretty straight play on old school rock and is about the same level of seriousness. I also dig the film clip, it reminds me a bit of Polyester Girl by Regurgitator on that it is pretty deliberately artifacted CGI for the time it comes out, but it is quaint and makes for a fun clip. There isn't much to it, but compared to my last bit on the previous track? I would so put this in a playlist.

Ella Henderson - Ghost

This last one... Bah. Definitely showing it with this one! I don't like it as much as Yuna or Lena Park and it is probably better put together than either of them. I wouldn't put it in a playlist, but wouldn't turn it off the radio either.

Yeeeeeeep this is both the track and the film clip of the week. I have seen reference to them having something out online without getting a chance to see it, so this one is going to make its rounds.

I love the fact that a band that sound like Blur back in the day can still drop out singles. I dislike that they have to go on the strength of their film clips so much for some of their popularity, but these guys are consistently amazing at putting them together, so I shouldn't complain too much.

These guys are a good band with a great visual sense. Really multimedia talent in play there. 10/10 would watch many times to come on Greatest Hits shows for film clips of 2010s.

Coldplay - A Sky Full of Stars

This is a song Snow should listen to on loop. Coldplay doing a pretty vapid upbeat track! Not what I really listen to Coldplay for, but I suppose it is good to see Chris Martin singing about something other than dead people or melancholy? Also wheee Sydney or something?

Lady Antebellum - Bartender
Country meets party track. Very not Grefter. It feels super super safe. The film clip looks like hot 30 something chicks vs Buster from Arrested Development as a bartender.

Atttitude City - NSP

This is pretty much what every day is like and is a fusion pretty diverse genres of music. 10/10 and will easily be my most linked thing from this week.

Maroon 5 - Maps

One of these days I should probably quantify what it is that I don't really like about Maroon 5 stuff. I talk a lot about how I really love a driving bass line and they consistently do that, but it feels like there isn't much more to it I guess. This song shows a decent amount of it in that it is a pretty basic drum beat with lyrics that stick to the beat like glue. Compare it to a song like Nico and Vinz - Am I Wrong which has a similar structure and vocal range I guess to kind of use as an example? There just isn't heaps going on here.

I also kind of dislike the narrative the song constructs of "I was always there for you" etcetc, but now that "I" am having a hard time you aren't there so "I" will find you and blah blah blah. It is very centered around the protagonist of the song I guess is a way to put it. Commonly it feels like in that kind of thing the song is either directed AT the listener (like One Direction songs singing about how generic vague feature of YOU is the best!) or is for the listener to project on to be from their point of view. I suppose it is just the strong use of first and second person pronouns in a song. It isn't someone singing about something they have experienced or a story they are telling, but it is setting it up to be a dialogue or at least a one sided conversation (Where Gotye - Somebody I Used To Know avoids this by having a two sided conversation).

That said, Nico & Vinz was a related link so I am listening to that now.

I have nothing much to say on this one either. Piano Ballads gonna be Ballads. You don't like the kinds of music I do from as many decades as I do without having a soft spot for them. Whether it is a young Tom Waits doing a Piano ballad (Or an older one in a duet!) or Gunners doing a Power Ballad, they still hit me pointlessly in the feels with their amazingly cheap emotional manipulation.

Sure it is in Korean and I have no idea what is going on. That doesn't matter. Ballads work because of the tone just as much as the content. This one is pretty decent at it.

Miranda Lambert - Somethin' Bad ft. Carrie Underwood

Alright, you have been having these two on and off for a while, I kind of think it is time to go with them if you haven't used them recently? Still not my kind of thing, but much much better than Lady Antebellum to me. The film clip looks like they had a ton of fun making it which doesn't hurt!.

I am having trouble pinpointing why I think it is better than Lady Antebellum other than going "While it is indirect and doesn't say much about what is going on, it has more to it than DRINKING! which is what I expect from a country party track." Bonus points for not referencing cars or girrrrrrlllzzzzzzzzzzzz while still being a country song about having a good(bad) time.
