Apologies for missing the last couple of these, things've been busy.

Public Enemy - Positive message rap is a thing I can get behind on principle.  Pretty short and clearly targeted at younger audiences; there's some good stuff going on musically, but it moves so rapidly that it can feel disjointed.

Sonamoo - Wow, I wound up liking this quite a bit.  It has that "best of pop" thing going on where I can hear several other genres and influences (especially rap, following the Public Enemy track) that blend together to create this piece.  There's a lot going on but never too much, and the tone created feels a lot more genuine than similar songs in past weeks.  Not relying on random T&A helps. Just really well done on all fronts.

Stellar - Well, it's hard not to compare this to Sonamoo, and the comparison highlights how good the Sonamoo track is and some of the places this one falls short in comparison.  The video's more interesting but less tasteful... maybe that's on purpose, though.  I counted at least 12 distinct yonic symbols from 2:00 to 2:30, a density that would make O'Keeffe herself blush with envy.  But overall I came out feeling like this track was bound and restrained in its creativity.  It finds its deep, nestled groove and just sits there the whole way through, while I prefer stimulation that's a bit stronger, thicker and more varied.  I'd also feel a little nub of awkwardness trying to present this to mixed audiences, but I'm not the one putting on this exhibition so, eh.

Arch Enemy - This was an alright but forgettable half of a song.  Sounds very basic for the genre and feels like it cuts out halfway through.  I like me some scream, more than most people, but there's nothing amazing here and the fadeout just makes me go "Is this the whole track?  Are you sure?"

Z.hera - Ahhh wow.  Again with the good pop genre fusion and distillation!  I love the sax in the first 30 seconds and wish that would've kept up through the whole song.  The video's really creative too.  Any other week this would be a strong contender for a top slot, but... again I think the music is just sliiiightly behind Sonamoo in quality.  It's hard to pin down quite why though, and I could see this going either way for sure.

Nico and Vinz - The profanity here clashes with the otherwise lighthearted tone, hurting it quite a bit in my esteem.  It doesn't pull off either the casualness or the absurdity needed to make that sort of thing work to me.  Track made me giggle a bit, but mostly made me want to go back to the past and listen to "Because I Got High."

Sonamoo >= Z.hera >>>>>>> others, for me.

public enemy

Public Enemy still dropping some amazing shit years on.  I dig this a fair bit, it isn't really a big stretch for them, but it is good to see they still string together a great beat and slip some production over their rap where it is appropriate and use samples effectively.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYqfHaAkplw
sonamoo

This doesn't really hit me like it does Alex, it is super clean and kind of bland to me.  It is safe (well) produced K-Pop, but we know that doesn't hit me.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOmTdFpIDX8
Stellar

A bass line on the other hand we do know hits me right in my fun buttons.  Even a synthesised bass like this one.  It actually reminds  me of something I can't quite place (a Blondie track maybe?  It is farty enough that it also is a bit like something from Sonic 3 lololololololol).  So far this is my favourite, but I would link to Public Enemy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zPxiSs4BF44
Arch Enemy

I like this personally beset go the tracks, but it isn't super noteworthy tide of someone with a penchant for the kind of music.  The production of art for use in a tour poster I guess is cool.  It is a pretty stock metal track by a band that is good at it.  Some nice lyrics and some mad shredding.  It is something that would be a great driving/running/work out track.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4W0BiCiysg
Z.hera

This also didn't do much more me, less than Sonamoo as well, I dunno?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8fEOfFHVmA
nico & vinz

I think this is probably the weakest thing they have put out.  I went back to Am I Wrong and gods is it so great.  I think the chorus needed to repeat like 2 times less or at least have a line or two variation.

I also really hope it is just for the art and that it isn't real...

My favourites are Arch Enemy and Stellar but I would have more to talk about and enjoy sharing Public Enemy more.  Like they have been making tunes for long than we have been alive (33 years) and they can still drop a track that feels fresh and has a strong message.  Public Enemy are fucking amazing.

Gloryhammer - Initial reaction: "This is the most 1990s thing ever."  A few seconds later, "from the album 'Space 1992'" pops up, and I nod in agreement.  Perfectly captures the essence of not caring about self awareness or propriety and setting the universe on fire.

The Doubleclicks - Perfectly captures the essence of early 2000 flash animations in school computer labs.  Cute and endearing, though some points off for the song only being half the video.

Birdy + Rhodes - Perfectly captures the essence of the Harry Potter and Twilight movies...?  Video was pleasant, good use of color.  Song didn't do much for me, I couldn't align myself with its mindset very well.  Or, at least, not without being reminded of a certain other song that drops "All" from the title.

Rob Thomas - I can't keep up the gimmick here, no idea how to classify this other than xtreme shouting mouth closeups.  And Rick Astley.  In this day and age of culture, I don't think you can rock that hair, those shades, that face and hold a mic stand like that and not have it be an intentional reference.  That said I did find this track oddly refreshing and intellectually stimulating, so, sure!

Chvrches - "Why give credit to Fibonacci? It's God's sequence." - Youtube comments.  I gave it three listens and couldn't understand what the lyrics were talking about, though I suspect it has something to do with relationships, maybe...?  That's ok though, the lyrics were part of the music rather than an overlay, and that was sufficient to establish a solid tone.  Seems like a very Grefter song?

Smooth McGroove - Ah, so he came back from his 4 month hiatus, nice!  Smooth obviously has a strong working formula, and some of his stuff can suffer from a "seen one, seen them all" feeling because of that,  But there are exceptions where he goes above and beyond the norm, and this is certainly one of them.  I'm really impressed with all the background tones and blending, it doesn't sound at all like something that would be possible with unprocessed human voice.  Also shoutouts to mockball and Spore Spawn Skip in the video.

Very strong week to me, I genuinely enjoyed all of these and could easily promote 4/6 as winners.  I guess I'll put Smooth on top because he pairs with SGDQ for some writeup bait?

Smooth McGroove >= Gloryhammer >= Chvrches >= Rob Thomas > Birdy/Rhodes > Doubleclicks

Heh, yeah, absent any comments friday morning I just went with the doubleclicks for writeup bait.

I actually wasn't really considering Smooth all that highly he was moving around enough that I wasn't sure if he'd make top 6).

I did consider Gloryhammer, which I think was my favourite musically, but I considered the multi week sequence of the fact that we've chosen high production metal two weeks in a row already.

Chvrches was weird...it spent a long time hanging out at #1 for me, and then suddenly dropped to 5th-7th range.

Anyway, various note dumps.  The most recent week

Finalists are...more mainstream than normal!  I'm already leaning in a direction, but it's possible that direction is a bad idea I should be talked out of.  (Fairly strong week regardless I think)

Robin Thicke - this track wishes it was off Daft Punks last album, you know that one that came out when Robin Thicke as being all rapey?  Well his delivery lacks the nice rhythmic cadence a really great dance track has (uuuuuuuuseyaloooooovetateaaaarme aparhart), swing at the king you best not miss. Nicki's section is pretty great and her flow is spot on with some nice lyrics but it also like 5 lines total?  Bah.  If it a Nicki solo it would hold up.

Austin Mahone - Won't play in this country.  First time in ages that has happened.  I assume this isn't the pick because it should be Chvrches.

Blonde - Nice dance track, but doesn't do heaps for me.

Chvrches - this is hands down flat out the best this week.  Interesting electronic instrumentation, good vocal work that goes through synth work that does chew it up and shit the soul out the other end.  Chvrches is one of those bands that consistently impress me that I never get into and that is dumb of me.

Maxim - Boy bands don't do much for me even when they are from mainland Europe.  It is interesting, but it is still a boy band (even though it pretends to be a party track).

Steve Aoki ft Fallout Boy - I am not sure which one of them wanted to be Muse but none of them are Muse..

Yeah, this was the pick I was thinking about.  Hmm...ok, let me think between the two of these.  I kind-of recognize the Chvrches song as abstractly very good, but I don't really get all that into it; not sure I could hum it for instance....  The Austin Mahone song is very fun.

Robin Thicke - Just okay.  See Grefter's comments on the cadence and delivery; the mediocre performance there holds this back to me.

Austin Mahone - A good clean track with some amusement value.  Nice dancing too.  It doesn't hold much personal appeal, but I am hard pressed to find any particular fault in this.

Blonde - "Nice dance track, but doesn't do heaps for me." - Grefter 2015

Chvrches - Hmmmmm.  On the one hand this is a lot more original than the other finalists, and well produced.  On the other hand the vocals are shrill enough that they grate on my ears.  Not much, but enough that I definitely liked Never Ending Circles the other week more.

Maxim - Another pretty generic track, and the internet has ruined me as soon as I hear "dragostea" in lyrics.

Steve Aoki ft Fallout Boy - Doesn't do much of anything for me.  Too shouty to get into the mood.  The Endor fight scenes were boring and this doesn't salvage them, the real Leia did better.

This week is the embodiment of "medium okay" to me.  Austin Mahone and Chvrches are good, Steve Aoki is less good and Robin Thicke has an identifying flaw, and the other two fall firmly into "it exists and is all right I guess."  If I had to pick between Austin and Chvrches I would cheat back in time and pick the other recent Chvrches song.

Hmm...ok, well, I'm going to hazard a guess that chvrches keeps coming out with songs (since they've made some a couple weeks in a row) or comes out with a music video for circles (which very well might happen).  Seems like they're just doing the "we made an album, have a bunch of videos" thing right now, so we'll probably get a few opportunities to pick them, and per Alex this probably isn't the right chvrches song to pick.  Going with Austin Mahone this week because none of his other songs have been anywhere near this good.

Amorphis - I dig this film clip a lot.  Not because of the dude carting a coffin around, but because I love that they have a couple of rugs on their empty sound stage they are doing the film clip in.  It really ties the room together.  I also like the song, but that is probably coloured by my having a shit week at work and just recently caught up on a couple of Spectre Sound Studios videos (humor/information channel about music production and stuff) and they have some pretty kicking bits and pieces while doing reviews that hit the same style as this.  It is a pretty good choice to represent the genre though!  Clean lyrics but pretty straight metal track.  Not super technical or fast shredlord stuff and none of the sort of extra instrumentation that tends to go with symphonic stuff.

Probably my pick since I think a track that hits that sweet spot is probably kind of rare (and Death of a King which autoplayed after this has growl verses to it, so it isn't Amorphis' track standard either).

Steam Powered Giraffe - I love the band name.  The film clip is pretty nicely put together, kind of interested in how some of it is done.  If its filmed at half speed and then sped up?  If so how much of it is practical and how much is digital effects.

If I didn't have a bad week at work I might have liked this most?  buuuut i need some roaring bass guitar at the moment personally.

Jessie J - Oooooookay I am gonna talk some shit here that is going to sound mega fucking hipster and like I am bigger douchebag than usual.

I don't really understand how Jessie J isn't bigger than she is?  Because this pretty much straight rip and amalgamation of a bunch of pop from the last 3-4 years regurgitated in a super super polished corporate pop package.  The only things we get that is more of a product of huge corporate pop machines is the safest tier of the K-Pop tracks that come up.

Now remembering that it isn't terrible that this exists (or that you like it!  Although I clearly and trying to steer you in a different direction >_>), it just very much isn't Grefter bait.  I don't think it is even particularly well made as one of those kind of pop tracks though, but it is carefully constructed to be all things with no rough edges at all (I think the best kind of pop track, even mega production ones have way more bombast than this does.  I think this is mistakes a muted trumpet as being actual personality.  Like I honestly can't tell if that is supposed to even be one or it if supposed to be a guitar tone?)

Keiran Strange - Oh wait, we have a pop punk style track.  Okay.  Pop punk fits the mood pretty good to.  Does this one rate?  Because if it does I would say this one.  The song is about as original as any other pop punk track, but that is what you get in for.  Of course it sounds the same as everything else, because this is what pop punk is.

Punk is the real Three Chords and the Truth in music.

Sonya Belusova - Where do they find these pianos?  Also would have preferred her in Zombie makeup as well, especially with how repetitive the theme song is.

I dunno it is well done, but where last time I was like "Yeah its good but its just Mario?" this time the problem is the track.  There is just nothing to it.  Guile Theme autoplayed as I finish typing this out and yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh so much better.  Both a great track and one that gives her so much room to work.

din din x Transfixion - I dig this track and film clip in conjunction.  It isn't the best (it is probably third best?), but it DEFINITELY has actual bombast that Jessie J's track didn't.

Two most disappointing things.  No LeDouche sample DO IT, JUST DO IT.  When they reveal the card that guy was playing with while sitting over the main character, the King of Clubs, they don't have a massive bass drop.  Both of these together would be the greatest thing ever.

Like I really dig dudes just getting wailed on with pipes as well, that puts it at a super close 3, but I am really in a specific mood at the moment.

Amorphis - I like how bold and clean this is, yeah.  Not a lot to add to Grefter's comments, it's good stuff.  Feels like metal pop?  Made me think "oh, this sort of music is saying the same things and can be easily linked to other genres, cool!"

Steam Powered Giraffe - Also featuring Team Silent, apparently.  This video was very distracting and hit the uncanny valley perfectly for me.  In many cases this would not be a negative - y'all know how much I like horror-ish stuff.  But it doesn't really mesh with this song to me.  I kept looking for something to tie the song and video together and couldn't find it.  So in the end I just wound up unsettled, in a way that it doesn't seem like the artists intended.  If the video is completely ignored then the song is just a reasonable family values sappy piece, not bad but nothing special to me.

Jessie J - Wow, I disagree with Grefter's comments on this.  The beginning especially felt rough-edged and rolling, not corporate attitude at all.  Now, I don't listen to much pop as a general rule, so this could absolutely be just my genre blindless and general lack of experience speaking.  But I liked this song a lot and felt it was more "counter-corporate" than "safely produced," just as a gut reaction.  It's still not much to my taste, either, but I like it over a lot of the pop that generally appears in this thread.

Kieran Strange - "Sounds the same as everything else of its genre, including itself" seems about right.  The youtube for this has awful, muted-sounding quality compared to the other tracks.  Is that a fair thing to knock points for?  Well, it is the artist's official youtube video of the track, so... yes.

Sonya Belusova - Neat aesthetics.  Grefter's probably right here, it's a good effort but there just isn't a lot to the source material.  I did like the sudden violin part, but didn't like the ending.

din din x Transfixion - Wowwww this is K-drama as heck.  There isn't much really wrong with this track other than envisioning ways in which it could've been better.  Plays it a bit on the safe side?

Odd week, nothing really stood out to me.  Amorphis is probably the safest good pick?  But not by much, and then the other five I could sell in just about any order.

Amorphis > Jessie J > din din > Sonya Belusova > Kieran Strange > Steam Powered Giraffe

On The start of the Jessie J track, remember that Nicki Minaj is super popular?  This I her with all aggression and lyrical world play removed.

Kieran strange wouldn't shock me if the whole track was recorded off the same microphone and mixed in Audacity.  I think it is totally fair to mark something down for poor sound production.  In this case it is also absolutely both a part of the style and how far up the food chain the artist is working as well.

Lollll, just totally blanked yesterday.  Sent the list to myself and then...never posted it.  This'll be a day late.  (also a bit of a weaker group as I was away at PAX and listened to less stuff).

Taylor Swift

Is pretty okay Taylor Swift track, but Blank Space came on after it and I was enjoying that more, so....

Nick Jonas

When I came back after a couple of tracks in a pause with what I was doing to do write ups... I started to do the write up for Stadiux, Dzasko as this one.  I completely forgot it was there.  There is a few bits in the track that are good, which speaks better for his producers than his performance.  Actually digging in to this to check who that was reveals two producers and another three songwriters.  And his vocals are clearly cleaned up.  Okay, well so it goes.

Alright lets get the stock phrases out of the way.  Standard party track.  Anthem breaks at 1:03 right on schedule.

As of 4 tracks through this might be my pick?  I have been listening to a lot of 90s rap the last couple of days and those line up with party tracks in some specific ways.  Mostly just having a good consistent beat, something you can dance to matches pretty closely to something you can rap over with pretty steady hip hop rhythms.

Cassadee pope

I like this song better when it is a sad ballad instead of a power ballad.  It is pretty much My Immortal again?  Its alright.

Angra

I was wrong.  Like usual "Oh hey I like this thing it might be my pick" ends up being my third best pick.   This reminds me of two things, one I love and one I hate.  The clean vocals and shredlord status reminds me of Dream Theater a lot and that is a pretty damn good thing to remind me of.  The thing I hate that it reminds me of is Dragonforce because it is some damned gooooooood guitar playing over the top of some pretty ridiculous stuff, HOWEVER unlike Dragonforce this isn't so over the top dripping with irony, it is just played straight.  Also it is less trashy speed metal influenced and more care in the playing.  This is to the point where I can't really tell if it is even really part of that old school metal revival that I keep talking about being a thing or if it is closer to early 2000s stuff when Melodic and Syphonic stuff was starting to gain traction post Nu Metal but people were still really digging classic Electric Guitar tones.

There is a ton to like about this.

Public Enemy

ON the other hand, I did mention I have been listening to 90s rap for a couple of days and there is a Public Enemy track.  Like I said last time there was a Public Enemy track, they keep it old school and prove that sound still feels fresh and has a ton of potential.  It is also another feel good, look after yourselves and everyone on the planet track from Public Enemy.  I really hope they get to go on Sesame Street soon because these guys deserve it.  THEY are the public speakers we need kids to hear from.

I was a little disappointed when we got to the end, I was pumped for what they would bust out for the end of the alphabet and it really didn't deliver, but the rest of the track if fucking solid gold and is my pick for the week.  M was both predictable and appreciated and on N they fucking drop the mic;  Fantastic 1/2 punch on modern events in US politic.

Taylor Swift - Even I know about Taylor Swift.  This doesn't seem like her best work though.  Kinda vapid, and a bit exploitive.

Nick Jonas - I like the background for this one, but not much else.  The high pitched vocals don't do it for me, and I'm gonna say the strippers were probably not strictly necessary.

Stadiumx, Dzasko - Pretty generic partyelectro.  Nothing bad but nothing good.

Cassadee Pope - Well... I really don't like the video, using 100% fan photos like that rubs me the wrong way.  It feels like it's trying to cash in on some heartstrings or message of strength that isn't actually there.  Like, if these were all cancer patients or something, that would be tacky but at least make some sort of statement.  As it is though, there's nothing tying it together, the message is just "look, a bunch of people liked this song! (or were paid to pose!)"  Makes the message of the actual song fall flat to me.  That was quite a few more words than I have for the song itself, which is... just a clean pop strength/power ballad, like Grefter said.  It's a fairly popular genre in MClists, so I've seen several in this space, and this isn't one of the more impressive examples to me.

Angra - Good track.  Grefter covered the metal stuff pretty well already.  Personally, I prefer the more bombastic stuff to this - my favorite "epic metal" tracks (or whatever you'd call this) have more rough edges to hang my mind on and make me want to repeat them.  This one is if anything a little too clean and plain for me.  Wings of the night, fly to the light, etc etc going through the motions for what is usually a very emotion-driven genre.  That said, I guess there is a market for clean stylings as well, and the guitar here is very nice!

Public Enemy - Yeah, slam dunk.  Grefter said everything I thought of while listening, including a Sesame Street comparison.  The song also makes a simple, impassioned case for itself in the (clever) chorus.  The other five songs here were all united in their distinct lack of making me think about anything, and an overly polished mass appeal vibe.  This is the opposite, and, well, I like songs that make me think, however unsubtly.

Public Enemy >>>> Angra > Stadiumx > the others.

Hmm...yeah, seems like we have consensus around Public Enemy.  Welp, I was already leaning that way to begin with.

(The one point of disagreement is that I like the Nick Jonas track way more than you two--but that was predictable).

I think it's a stacked week, when Macklemore and Ryan Lewis don't make the top 6 cut.  Or maybe I just make terrible decisions!
