Tourney of Random Events: Round 1, Week 1
« on: February 11, 2014, 06:48:31 PM »
Event 1: Novel Writing

The work of a professional novelist is grueling, often a silent war against ones own thoughts.  The winner of this event is the one which can write the best quality novel within their soul-crushing six month deadline.

The reigning International Man of Mystery is already a published author, although it's more of an endorsement piece than a novel, but certainly events of his life could probably be published as fiction and do well.  But will he be able to distract himself from swinging and fighting Dr. Evil long enough to finish within the deadline?

The head of the Schroedinger band is intimately familiar with novels, being inside the bodies of fictional characters more or less her entire adult life.  It's an open question whether she can adapt this knowledge into the writing process however.

Event 2: Mass Arson

Because some people just want to watch the world burn.  The goal is simply sheer volume of destruction, with the caveat that only things which are on fire and burn at least part of the way down will count towards the final toll.

Strong Bad, lord of the emails, probably wants to burn things a least.  But can he actually accomplish such a thing intentionally?

Rikku is more of a kleptomaniac than a pyromaniac, but she's probably proficient in combustible fuels at least.

Event 3: The Substitute

The most thankless of professions, the substitute teacher.  Presented with a 3rd grade classroom, contestants will be judged on their ability to maintain order and present a successful lesson plan.

T260G isn't really human, but that can be a blessing when dealing with small children.  She has a lot of knowledge to draw upon, although whether that translates into understanding how to engage developing minds with the material is hard to say.

The Invisible Woman is a mother to two, although thanks to time travel and alternate dimensions and such that's more like direct, hands on mothering with one kid half time.  Unless one of them was retconned as someone else's kid, it can be hard to keep track.  Anyway, no one doubts she's got the maternal instinct, but teaching one kid isn't the same as teaching thirty.

Event 4: Battle of the Bands

Our contestants will divide into teams of four, based on the stereotypical structure: Vocalist, Guitarist, Bassist, and Drummer.  Each band can organize themselves into the four roles as they see fit.  Winner will be judged not on technical competence, but on ability to work a crowd and get them cheering.

Our first band is The (10th) Doctor, The King of All Cosmos, Benjamin 'Don't Fuck With The' Sisko, and Lilka 'Lacking an Epithet' Eleniak.  Sisko is out of his element in the rock band configuration, but isn't unfamiliar with music in general.  The rest are fairly alien and occasionally clumsy, but certainly The Doctor can rock his charisma when he needs to, so who knows.

Their competition is Giselle, Rich Uncle Pennybags (aka Monopoly Man), Wile E. Coyote, and Luca Blight.  Giselle is a certified Disney Princess, with the downright magical vocal ability that implies.  Which may or may not translate to rocking the house.  And god knows with the rest of them.  It'll be interesting at least.

Event 5: Competitive Eating

Pack it in!  For simplicity, we'll be using one of the classics of the medium, the hot dog.  Put away the most food to collect your victory!

The humble Slime fills in the first slot.  Ubiquitous monster of various Dragon Quests, it's small, but also made of gelatinous ooze that's probably all digestive material or something.  Not to be underestimated in this competition.

Carmen Sandiego seems entirely out of her element here.  She's a classy master thief, not a big eater.  Still, perhaps some sleight of hand to 'steal' the hot dogs will get her through?

Short Form

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
CK: She is the female you

Short Form

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)- Austin Powers in an incompetent ninny, Maya is competent and probably funnier to boot. She takes this, no contest.
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)- Strong kneejerk.
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)- Is a hot mom superhero. She's gonna have those kids on lockdown.
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)- Sisko's team strikes me as much better suited to this event.Pennybags/Luca/Wile E are completely useless here.
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
A voracious reader isn't necessarily a good writer, but Maya can probably write some decent "genre fiction."  Austin I see as one of those celebrities who has one of those terribly self-important books about how he conquered this woman then that woman then saved the world and probably needs a ghostwriter.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
Uhhhhhhhhhh.  Strong Bad is clearly the more inclined to go on a mass arson spree of the two in general, but if she put her mind to it I have to assume Rikku can wreck more havoc here, while Strong Bad is more likely to get distracted by Homestar halfway through, and then find the King of Town holding a campout with smores around the fire he did start, and then angrily insist it was supposed to be arson not sleepaway camp.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Kids are not going to respect a robot or feel bad about disappointing one.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Soooooooooo much dead weight.  I haven't seen Enchanted but suppose I should go check it out, but Giselle is like the only competent one at this task here, and being a character in a musical means that she's among the best possible picks, so sure, she carries.  (The King might have awesome music around him, but he isn't the producer of it.)  If this had been Rock Band (the game) it might have been different as your entire team is important there, but just a Battle of the Bands judged by an audience?  Have Giselle go sing solo and make everyone else crazy backup dancers, collect victory.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Slimes are small, but giant King Slimes exist, and they are clearly slimes who ate too many hot dogs and/or adventurers.  Carmen Sandiego is too intent on keeping her slim & glamorous looks to try too hard here.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (eponymous) vs. Maya Schroedinger (Wild Arms 3): No contest, see others' arguments.
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (Homestar Runner) vs. Rikku (Final Fantasy X): I could be persuaded to vote the other way if Strong Bad has access to Trogdor.
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs. Sue Richards (Fantastic Four): T260 will be lucky if the kids don't take her apart.
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II): Hard call IMO.  Giselle may be a character in a musical, but a singer in a musical needs competent material to sing.  The crowd is a big variable too - it's entirely possible that the crowd attending a battle of the bands won't be receptive to Giselle's type of music.
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs. Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous): Carmen steals either A) the hot dogs, B) the contest venue itself, C) the judges, D) the Dragon Quest franchise, or E) Slime himself, all of which prevent Slime from actually competing.  The player is not present to solve Carmen's crime and apprehend her, ergo she wins.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3) - Austin Powers tries to cash in on the 50 Shades market by writing trashy softcore fiction. Maya probably does the same thing only better.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)- If Rikku really wants to set things on fire, things are going to burn. Full on mad science mode.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four) - What grade? If it's High School, sue probably takes it because the hormonal teenage boys will be too busy drooling over the superheroine to cause problems. If grade school, which is what I initially assumed when I saw it, then T260G has got this in the bag. Kids think robot are awesome. Gonna tiebreak for the robot.
EDIT: Ah, the grade was in there. 3rd? Yeah, Robot has this. Superhero and Robot are equally cool at that age, and Sue is more likely to get frustrated, also has like dozens of villains that might show up to wreck the day, T260 does not.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) - Uh...sure. Team 2 at least has a solid front-woman, and Wile E. Coyote can invoke Loony Tune powers to have competent musical ability at least until a comedic mishap.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) - I'm willing to go with the assumption that a) slimes are probably great at just absorbing/digesting organic material, and b) Carmen is not going to want to ruin her figure by eating a ton of hot dogs.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Yeah, what others said here.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
uhh sure

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Abstain.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
To be honest I'm not seeing much of anything in the opposition that trumps Disney Princess here even with two of her teammates being deadweight.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Abstain.

You all seem to have forgotten Austin is an accomplished novelists in-universe.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
Strong Bad is unfortunately not Trogdor.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Sue is a mom.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Christ.  Uhhh, kneejerking on Disney Princess + Coyote on pyrotechnics.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Is a Slime.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger
Yeah I'm just going to assume that whatever this character comes up with has to be better than Austin's writing.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
She throws some stuff and sets things on fire.  Strong Bad has the will, but not the means.  Rikku can always call Cid to rain happy festival fireworks too.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
See Gatewalker's reasoning pretty much.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)

Between Giselle and Wiley team B just has it.  If they need money for equipment, they have Pennybags.  Luca can try and push tickets or something.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Slime probably eats slowly enough that Carmen can figure out a plan to steal SOMETHING that makes this end up in her favor.  She'll never be caught either.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X) - Probably has a Mix. The argument for TROGDOR is strong, though...
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four) - Something about robots as teachers.
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) - King of All Cosmos just makes a katamari band.
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) - Carmen Sandiego steals the slime from the Slime so he can't do anything. Alternatively, she steals all the food but one hot dog and then eats it and wins.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Both are rather self-absorbed with their strongest talents in other areas.  Maya has access to a deeper resource pool though.  She reads a biography of Jules Verne or some other skilled novelist, channels him or her, and claims.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
Is better at focusing on the task.  Can mix up some kind of explosives and/or call airstrike.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Kneejerk that she doesn't suffer a mental breakdown and is able to present a lesson plan.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
See Random Consonant commentary.  For extra absurdity, have Luca join in on "A Whole New World".

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Abstain.  Carmen easily steals victory from regular Slime but King Slime will eat her and she has no answer to that.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3): Given Maya's super power, she just reads a "Writing for Dummies" book, and suddenly gains Writing Super Powers.
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X): When all is said and done, while Strong Bad may be more for this, Rikku is the more competent one with an arsenal of machines on her side.
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four): Logic has no place when substituting children.  Being a parent provides far more as an advantage than any program can.  Trust me on this, I know from experience (ok, not the parent thing, but shh!)
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II): Wile E. Coyote means that team is inevitably going to fail in spectacular manner.  That's really all this comes down to.
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous): Carmen Sandiego, for all her thieving ways, has way too much dignity to take this seriously; she'd more likely quit immediately and give Slime the win by default.

Short Form

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3) -- Not incompetent, and I imagine Maya can win over readers with her wit.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X) - pretty much going by earlier arguments.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four) - Going by what I recall?  Yeah, third-graders would probably be more awed and impressed by the robot.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) --This...this is some sort of abomination.  That aside, something tells me that Lilka would somehow manage to be a no-show via Teleport Failure...while the Coyote would be competent enough at accidentally causing pyrotechnics and...I dunno, the battle cry of "DIE, PIGS!" would probably win something over at a Battle of the Bands.  Assuming everyone can keep Luca from deciding that there are pigs that need to die in the audience.  Abstaining until I can imagine just which one would somehow do better.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) - I'm seeing it as a normal slime.  While it may have at least a 5% chance of going before Carmen, the point is that Carmen can probably pull one or more sleight-of-hand tricks to edge out the competition.

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3)
Austin may be a published author, but if you've seen his movies, you pretty much already know what his books are going to be like. Considering her unique abilities, Maya is probably a better writer overall. Plus, we can't forget that these two are working within a six-month deadline, and Maya probably seems more likely to actually finish her book within this time frame without getting distracted.

Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X)
Strong Bad does indeed have pyromaniac tendencies, but he's outgunned here. His trusty BMW lighter is no match for Rikku's magic or alchemy, both of which are capable of causing large-scale destruction. At least he'll get an entertaining SBEmail out of the whole ordeal.

The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
Robots are cool, but if the kids are misbehaving, they can also be scary enough to put the little moppets in line. Sue can...turn invisible, I guess, which doesn't really help her with this task. And being a mother doesn't necessarily mean that she'll be good at wrangling an entire elementary school class.

Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II)
Wile E. Coyote and Luca bring too much potential for failure, methinks. I can't see the other team being anything more than decent, but that's probably enough to outshine the competition.

Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous)
Slime can just, like, stretch its entire body over the plate of hot dogs in a matter of seconds. That counts as eating, right?

Hey, forgot to vote on this!

Novel Writing: Austin Powers (Eponymous) vs Maya Schroedinger (Wild ARMs 3) - Experience writing is way too important.  Plus...think of what books sell.  I think Austin would be better at writing the next Twilight than Maya.
Mass Arson: Strong Bad (homestarrunner.com) vs Rikku (Final Fantasy X) - Mixes.
The Substitute: T260G (SaGa Frontier) vs Sue Richards (Fantastic Four) - Attractive woman super-hero - think every kid can look up to her.
Battle of the Bands: The 10th Doctor (Doctor Who), King of All Cosmos (Katamari Series), Ben Sisko (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and Lilka Eleniak (Wild ARMs 2) VS Giselle (Enchanted), Rich Uncle Pennybags (Monopoly), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) - I find this latter group funnier.  Anvil-dynamite chorus from Wile E., playing the bones of murdered audience members with Luca...it's like Metalocalypse!
Competitive Eating: Slime (Dragon Quest series) vs Carmen Sandiego (Eponymous) - She can do anything, frankly.  Hot dogs are a minor thing.  Besides, slime's anatomy doesn't allow him to EAT, moreso a phagocytosis, so he is immediately disqualified.
