Tourney of Random Events: Round 2, week 2
« on: May 04, 2014, 04:51:08 AM »
Note: Round 1 is still open for votes and will be for around 24 hours from this post.  But no reason not to toss up the next week now.

Event 30: The Team Fortress

A staple of the multiplay shooter scene, capture the flag (or Intelligence as the case may be) is something familiar even to those who don't follow the shooters.  For this event, two teams of four will be set into a recreation of a randomly selected Team Fortress 2 map and tasked with a best-of-three capturing of the intelligence.  The tools and skillset of each Team Fortress 2 character will be available to competitors (think of it as a Job Crystal), but given this is the Tourney of Random events, no one will be compelled to do so and may certainly fight under their own power if they so choose.  Respawn points and Lenneth will be on hand to revive players/recreate the arena as needed.

The first team is Lily, Athena, Bowser, and Luca.  They have a good mix of personality types and innate skills, so they can certainly form a good unit... if they can get along well enough of course.

The second is the Invisible Woman, Wile E. Coyote, Soma and Splinter.  Sue Richards is a massive threat in this scenario, but Wile E. is always a risk of self-sabotage, and the opposing team may work out something.

Event 31: The Three-Legged Race

A classic of awkward family or work get togethers.  Tie two people together at the leg, force them to run to a finish line.

Our first team is Walter White and Giselle.  Walter's not in the best of shape, but it's not THAT far, and Giselle probably has magical powers of encouragement through song or something.  Seems like a thing she'd be able to do.

Their opponents are Archer and Captain America.  Cap could probably be competitive here dragging Archer to the finish line, being peak human performance and all.  How Archer will respond to the event is less clear though, so who knows.

Event 32: Fightans

Fighting games are the spice of life.  The spice is life.  Fear is the mind killer.  The little death that brings total obliteration.  Um.  Ahem.  Competitors will be asked to play the most classic of classics, Street Fighter 2, for three sets of best of three.

Our contestants are The Great Question and Miriel.  Neither one knows what a video game is, so there's no unfair advantages at least?

Event 33: The Stare

Staring contests.  Because people are weird.  However, the internet demands that the Tourney of Random Events have at least one gratuitous pony reference, and so rather than facing each other, each contestant will separately and simultaneously (through the magic of alternate dimensions) be subjected to the stare of Fluttershy.  Whichever one goes the longest without breaking down is declared the winner!  Won't that be fun.

Bender and Gilgamesh will undergo this ultimate trial.

Short Form-
Team Fortress: Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies), Bowser (Mario Series) and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) vs Master Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise), Soma Cruz (Castlevania Series), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)
The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
CK: She is the female you
Snow: Speaking of Sluts!

Team Fortress: Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies), Bowser (Mario Series) and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) vs Master Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise), Soma Cruz (Castlevania Series), Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes/Merry Melodies), and Sue Richards (Fantastic Four)- Hell of a matchup on the whole. Luca's brutality and military experience are both going to be extremely useful here. His tactical knowledge/skills should tip things more than
The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)- Oh dear god. Captain America and someone in top top shape versus... a random disney character and a middle aged man dying of cancer. This is going to be ugly.
Fightans:Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)- More familiar with technology.

Team Fortress: Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies), Bowser (Mario Series) and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) vs Master Splinter (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Franchise), Soma Cruz (Castlevania Series), Wile E. This is actually quite close!  Thoughts:
Each team basically needs someone to defend the intel, usually an Engie, or else they get owned by Scouts/Spies.  They can then either try and have a spy be sneaky and grab the intel, but have one fewer front-liner brawling it out in the middle, or just have everyone else try and zerg it down by force.
* Bowser is obviously Team A's engie.  Building diabolical deathtrap castles is kinda his thing, and even while Bowser himself is sometimes easy, his castles are often fairly worthy.  PLUS fire turns off invisibility, and we know Bowser final stages are often a fan of lava pits & jumping poodooboos and the like.  He's actually rather good here.
* Athena's stuck going Scout or Spy.  She's actually not bad at it, look all innocent while shuffling papers, and has a Snake-esque CQC takedown if she sneaks up on someone, but she's hopeless in a straight-up fight.
* Luca & Lily will be the front line.  Gatewalker claims Lily is competitive enough to follow Luca's orders...  and Whim is actually a *huge* asset here, free spotter who can run around checking vents.  Luca also has fire magic and is pretty much a great Pyro, so that counters Sue's invisibility to a degree.  Lily will be some kind of ice Soldier/Demo just pumping out ranged damage.

For Team B...
* Sue's a Spy & a Medic at the same time - that is awesome.  However, considering the above hype for Bowser defenses, I honestly think she may be better off just being mostly a Medic using force fields to shield in a straight fight rather than repeatedly trying to sneak in and missing that one jump.  Of course Luca (w/ Whim spotting) knows to gank the medic first, so she's in for an exciting time.
* Soma is the other reason Sue maybe skips being a Spy after all!  Mobility may help more than invisibility here, just grab bat powers and fly through the vents.  He's also excellent on the front-lines with power & variety in his attacks.
* Splinter is yet another fine Spy option, he's a ninja!  But 3 Spies is crazy talk.  He'll be on the front lines as a Scout, or a Sword & Board Demo.
* Wile E. Coyote, with his proclivity for buying ACME brand equipment, will insist on being the Engineer and defending the base.  He will lay ingenious traps that Really Should Work, as Athena casually walks past them, and then as Wile inspects his own stuff, somehow TF2 Friendly Fire will turn on and he will explode.

I'd argue that Team B has more raw power - in a draft, Sue and Soma are probably the top picks of these 8.  However, they are too anti-synergistic - they got the 3 best Scout/Spies.  They ALSO got the sole liability here in the Coyote, so Athena, despite being a weaker Spy than Team B's 3, might well have more success vs. Wile E. Coyote than the other 3 vs. Bowser, because goddamn it's Wile E. Coyote.  Team B's best hope is probably just to abandon spies entirely and try and beat Team A in the open field and win faster than Athena can capture, but even if that works once, Luca will eventually get the point and play a wee bit more conservatively and stick near Bowser's defenses.  I also don't really see base defense as something any of the others on Team B would be good at anyway if they could somehow convince Wile to do something else.  So yeah.  Vote goes to Lilianne Valendorf (Mana Khemia 2: Fall of Alchemy), Athena Cykes (Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies), Bowser (Mario Series) and Luca Blight (Suikoden II) .  But it's close!  I'd probably vote for Team B in a straight deathmatch, but Team A is better for Capture the Flag.

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
lol

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
If the competitors have time to practice up beforehand, The Great Question, he's presumably very competitive.  If they walk in blind, probably Miriel, TGQ is a moron and Miriel is smart-if-detached so can probably figure out how to button mash faster.  Awaiting arguments.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
Gilgamesh has experience here.  He will last around 4 rounds of banter then run away.  Bender, despite being a robot, is part of the set-up gag where somebody loudly proclaims how good they are at {X}, followed by immediately failing at {X}, generating humor.  He'd talk about how we stared down a galactic octopus once then immediately blink and declare he didn't want to be part of any stupid staring contest anyway.

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
Well this doesn't sound at all onesided.

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Neither one knows what the fuck, but Miriel is more likely to 1) pick up on what the fuck is and 2) not break the arcade machine in the process of picking up on what the fuck is.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
sure why not

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)

Cooperation and coordination are more important than pure physical fitness.  Walt has determination to win.  Giselle provides optimism, pluck, and Disney magic to not trip on the way to the finish.  This is more competent  than the mismatch I initially envisioned.  So Cap and Archer win in a straight race instead of effortlessly cruising.

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)

Joachim wins the first set but accidentally breaks his joystick and loses the next two.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)

Bender self sabotage

Team A is the stronger team, but their real question is if they can work together or not since they have three very strong personalities with the potential for some epic clashing.  Fortunately, they also have Athena who's psychology and emotion sensing makes her one of the best people to have for keeping all three of these people working together.

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
Y'know, while I could go with the flow, I'm gonna say that Giselle manages to use her magical songs to get them over the finish line first.  But they get disqualified because they needed to cross under their own power, and not because they got picked up and hauled over by an enchanted moose.

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Going with the argument of able to adapt faster.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
Normally you'd think the fleshy mortal would be less immune to the sight of madness than the robot.  But futurama robots are pretty bad for immunity against stuff like that, and Gilgamesh has been kinda hurtling through the heart of madness as he travels from game to game which has gotten him pretty used to it.

Sue is probably going to be the most useful member of her team since turning invisible seems like a valuable ability to have in a capture-the-flag match. Unfortunately, the rest of her team kind of sucks. Wile E. Coyote brings too much potential for unintentionally sabotaging his team and I cannot see Splinter willingly using a gun to shoot other people since he's an honorable martial artist or whatever who will want to stick with melee attacks. Lily's team just seems all-around more competent at this.

The Three-Legged Race: Walter White (Breaking Bad) and Giselle (Enchanted) vs Steve Rogers (Marvel Comics) and Archer (Fate/Stay Night)
Mm-hm.

Fightans: Miriel (Fire Emblem: Awakening) vs The Great Question (Shadow Hearts: Covenant)
Despite never playing Street Fighter before, Miriel is probably smart enough to figure out what the buttons do before Great Question can.

The Stare: Gilgamesh (Final Fantasy V) vs Bender Bending Rodriguez (Futurama)
I don't know the relevance of a staring contest with Fluttershy since I'm not a fan of the pony cartoon, so I'll just say that Bender wins since robots don't have to blink and proceed to not think about this match any further.
