Eagerly waiting for Warrior.

He's unique in that he's the only character in the game who gets a soul break from a 3* weapon.

Also, "A warrior fears no danger, and excels in bringing combat to the enemy. Sturdy yet lithe, the warrior can wear a wide range of armor, serving as both sword and shield on the front lines of battle."

Hahaha. Hawkeye is a 5* weapon? That's fantastic. It's nice to see the creators acknowledge just how good that could make Locke.

MY best weapon? Well, gentlemen, feast your eyes on my lovely BASTARD SWORD (FFVI), a 3 star weapon that nonetheless makes Cloud deal about 4 times more damage than the rest of my party on either FFVI or FFVII maps.

Mastered Aerith's event, without using Aerith because I don't need to waste eggs on more healers and I heard she dies before the game is over. No surprise that Smashiroth was MVP. He was still 1-shotting randoms with his normal attack in the level 99 dungeon.

Final Fantasy A Chain Of Autobattles - Also finished the Aerith event. Red XIII does truly disproportionate damage when under full synergy bonuses. I want the dungeon update that brings the Forest of Moore so bad.

He likely won't aim for it anyway, it's not worth it if you don't raise the event PC. I know I said "fuck it" to mastering the boss rush in JENOVA Project. No regrets.

After killing a Lightning Event enemy by cheerfully playing a harp at it, I was lead to wonder:

Will Final Fantasy ever be silly again? Can it be silly again? Can it be fantasy, again? That's what I wonder. Sure, there's magic and airships and whatnot, but it's all so... serious. Final Fantasy 4 had you defeat an Elf because you played music through a telepathy weed. Final Fantasy VI had you confront a talking octopus on multiple occasions. Final Fantasy VII featured a party member that was a magically animated cat robot riding a larger stuffed moogle robot. And then made that character the "spy" on your party.

Is there whimsy in later entries? Where is it? If it's gone, can we get it back?

Final Fantasy Autobattling In The Name - With the Aerith event toppled and the realization that I don't have much use for white power today (not really much I really need to hone from White Orbs and I already have some 120 Power Orbs from black power Tuesday), I naturally decided to ~~date pidgeons~~ farm Greater Fire Orbs at Thamasa. Tedious as fuck, but I got one for my stash already. Also cap-broke Aerith and Warrior of Light.

EDIT: Second gotten. If I get two more, I'll have enough -Fire- orbs for Waterja R3, but there are still the three Greater Ice Orbs left to go. Well, there's always Besaid for that. Honing either Thundaja or Firaja to R3 will be -pain-, though: 30 Greater Orbs fuck you.

These japanese games have higher graphical fidelity and you got older, what you saw as charming whimsy in early FF you see as stupid anime bullshit in recent FF

FF2/4/6 were pretty srsbns overall

I try to look at FF15 as little as possible these days, myself.

I do think the kind of more surreal moments you get in earlier FF (such as the character of Ultros in general, Wall Market / Honeybee Inn) have vanished from FF10/12/13, though obviously whether that's a good or bad thing is something you can debate. I look back kind of fondly on some of it myself (especially Ultros, duh), but don't really miss it, if that makes sense.

Agreed that there are definitely parallels between the "whismy" of early sprite games and the "anime bullshit" of more recent RPGs. Actually if so this kinda drives home my previous point, since whatever you think of the relative quality of FF and various other RPGs these days, it's hard to argue against the observation that various other JRPG series (Fire Emblem 13-14, Persona 3-4, Tales, Disgaea) are clearly more "anime" than FF12-13. EDIT: On the other hand FF Type-0 is anime as fuck.

Ehhhhh... I see this argument with anime a lot too and I'm not fully convinced I agree? There are definitely things that are going to relate to simply getting older and changing tastes, but there is something to be said for the fact that the way things are being handled has changed too. I mean, at a very base level, EDIT: I'm stupid as shit and fucked up the numbers 1-6/Tactics/9/12/11/14 vs 7-8/10/13/15 have a pretty big gap in genre (the latter leaning way more sci-fantasy than fanrasy).

I think NEB nails it a bit better by saying there are parallels between the whimsy and the BS, rather than your statement that they are the same. There is a definite difference in presentation, handling, etc. This isn't to say one is superior (and that there isn't some degree of nostalgia tinting), just that things have indeed changed.

Final Fantasy Weekend Without Autobattle - Still farming Greater Fire Orbs. Got three so far, so could be worse. I just can't wait for the Orb festival, which is coming like a month and a half from now. If anything justifies mythril stamina refreshes, that will be it. So many Greater Orbs.

I think the shift to more realistic graphics has impacted how players react to surreal moments in FF games. I'm pretty sure that stuff like the Leblanc message minigame and Chocolina would've gotten very different reactions had they occured in a game with SNES sprites. Conversely, the "M-M-M-M-MAGIC?" scene from FF6 would likely play out very differently in a game with FF13-level graphics and especially facial expressions.

Yeah that's why I mentioned high fidelity graphics.
Also FF isnt really sci fi? There's just modern technology added to the recent ones.

And the scenes about Gau saying Cyan is Mr Thou

If we just want to list silly stuff in modern FF there's:
FF10, throwing water polo balls at wolves for 99999 damage, attacking robots with tiny stuffed cactuses
FF12, Balthier saying he's the main character, being Captain Basch from Rosenburg of Dalmasca, Rogue tomato and shit
FF13, chocobo living in Sazh's hair
FF15, driving around in a car complaining about cramps then killing Behemoths
