Final Fantasy - A Reload Reborn

I swear, I think I've spent nearly $260 on FFRK for this event alone...  And what do I have to show for it?

3x Ninja Chainmails
2x Lominsan Bows
2x Cobalt Katzbalgers
1x Thyrus

Unrelated to FF14:
1x Defense Veil

...I need to stop spending money on this game.  At the very least, I've averaged about one 5* for every $30 I spent.  At the very least, since I still live at home with my parents, I can afford to give up a week's pay for fun.  Flipside, I basically get to buy no new fun times until after Christmas.

Hey, maybe they'll one day use some of that money to make a good mainline FF game or something. Then we can all thank you!
...into the nightfall.

Guys guys guys.  Why in the fuck did you think I was saying this is a bad idea for people with addictive personalities to play?

Payday 2 - It introduced dailies and that is bad.  One of them is always do 4missions for one of the Contractors.  Sometimes those are fine 4ish minute smash and grab ones.  Sometimes it is exclusively 20+ minute 3 map long ones.  This is fun, but 2 hours a day of play might be pushing it.   The rewards are low enough to not really push it though.  I am having fun with PUGs and doing harder content than I used to with them.  Not sure if game got a bit easier on Overkill or if general population just got better.  Probably a mix of both and some power creep on the player side.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - Muramasa with smaller breasts and more furry folk. I'm having fun. Controls are a bit mushy (moves aren't quite distinct enough to feel decisively that I have hit X, X, Y sometimes) and some of the VA was done with bad mics, but eh.

Maxing damage because I live on the edge. Also because the game has the universe's most forgiving parry.

Never Alone - Just not working for me. Couple of bugs have hit me already, platforming hasn't been interesting, bola controls are annoying, etc. Kind of a bummer. Really wanted to like it.

I just got 50 mithril again and spent it on the FF14 banner like a casino addict. Got Yoshimitsu. Okay.
Pretty cool (I like Thancred's super weird skillet) but Hinode scared me forever and I'm now afraid I won't be able to finish everything without either SG / Lunatic High / Boon

Oh and I crafted Holy. It looks nice?

The good news is that people have mastered everything to date without any of those fancy SBs, and recent Misfortune bosses have been easier than Beatrix/Vossler.

The bad news is that you might have to S/L ~60 times for those two bosses.

FFRK: Plucking away at the event quests and story missions, currently at 116 Stamina. Btw, would Aerith's Planet Protector or Thancred's Dancing Edge be a better RW?

Neither is terribly hot (ST damage SBs are a waste of a slot outside of the occasional newbie trying to cheese past earlygame content and MT attack up is slightly niche a setup, along with competing against Advantaliate setups), so I'd say pick whichever you like more.

The one thing about Planet Protector is that it's weirdly rare on reddit compared to the RK playerbase at large. As in, only two people have ever posted a code for it ever, including me. I hit 100 followers last week with PP and get more gil on average than a bunch of people with SG/Boon/Lunatic have reported.

That's interesting. I think I happen to follow both you and Magey, so whenever I do a more physical party I hit those up. I largely moved away from Reta once it started requiring Advance to properly keep up as a strat, though.

So close!

One of the Cube powers is to transmute a set item into a different item in the same set.  Just sayin'.

Also if anyone playing D3 wants a free ride to legitville and is NOT playing seasonal (which is a hamster wheel too far for me) just let me know.

I would raise exactly zero fuss if anybody who pulled the trigger on that $50-for-a-single-draw nonsense was automatically deemed incompetent to manage their finances by a court of law.

While I agree with this, and strongly encourage MagicFanatic & others to dial back their record keeping...

...I'd be much more eager to deny basic adulthood rights to people who go to casinos.  Okay, fine, I'll be more specific: people who play slots in casinos.

I kid you not that they offer "slots tournaments."  I am not making this up.  This is not ironic.  There are groups of friends who organize these among themselves with no need for casino prodding, too!  Think about that for a moment.

At least if you're playing a game, you have the fun of playing the darn game for your 'investment'.  Nobody over 7 years old likes just raw playing slots if there's no money involved.

As long as the person who shows up when the fewest people are typically in the Casino (and therefore the slot machines have the highest payout) wins, I am ok with this.

Oh, are we telling free-to-play stories?

I still play Perfect World.  The rarest item in the game is a helmet that comes from chance packs at a rate of .0003%.  It is so rare that up until recently we didn't have any on our server, despite it being available for a couple of years already.

So PWI's 7th anniversary rolls around, and they offer some massive sales on chance packs (along with rewards for charging money to the game and spending that charged money).

We have had five of those items pulled in the last week.

If my math is right, that's an estimated $366,000 charged into the game just for those packs alone, not even counting money spent on other things.  And the other 3 servers.

And Perfect World isn't even their biggest game anymore.  Which means people are spending even *more* money on Neverwinter and Star Trek.

And i thought I was irresponsible with money, like when I gifted Duck Game to everything

Duck Game: 4 players deathmatchs with Snow, Cid and Gourry. Really really cool.
13 hours in, the game is still not getting old. It says I have quacked 17 344 times so far, that's roughly one quack every 2,7 seconds for 13 hours.

Undertale: Gourry is going to tell you about how cool this game is. I don't want to spoil, but it is pretty cool.

I'm currently in the Barr mountains in SO3. I'm currently mostly using Nel, Maria, and a rotating third.

The main thing I've been playing, though is Celestian Tales - Old North. Fun little indie RPG.

It's a short game, and pretty clear part 1 of something bigger, but you can play it through multiple times to see it from the perspective of each of six main characters. Past that, the art is nice (reminds me of VP), the story is a pretty interesting little political yarn with lots of grey morality, all the major characters are distinct and memorable, and its battle system is well-done. I'll talk most about the battle system because it's me, but yeah the rest of the package is good too.

At the core of the battle system is stamina: each PC and enemy starts with 3, and can gain 1 by using a basic physical or 2 by defending. Using skills costs this resource, and obviously you can't go negative. Enemies use the system too, and the game has a bunch of skills which play with the system, like attacks which can lower target stamina or which ignore defence (and therefore defending). Both sides have lots of buffs and status options (status works on everything, so it tends not to be too debilitating) so there are lots of fun options to choose battle-to-battle. At first I was worried that the game would be too easy for any of this to matter, but after a slightly worrying start in the challenge department it definitely hits its stride. So in the end it just feels like it has a pretty good challenge curve.

It has a bunch of quality-of-life stuff I definitely approve of like healing all your HP after each fight (though there is a BoF/WA-like "max HP down" status so that you want to avoid deaths) and everyone gets full exp, whether in the party or not. Which means you can pretty much switch in the PCs you feel like using for any given fight at your discretion (does have to be between fights though).

It would certainly be nice if the game were longer or had a bit more content, but given its low price you certainly get your money's worth IMO (it costs less than half of one random item grab in FFRK, what the fuck to that...). Really the only major flaw is I feel the game's lack of sceneskip, which really bites it in the ass as the game does on one occasion put a nasty fight after a lengthy cutscene. Boooo! Otherwise the game is pretty good on polish issues.

It's hard to know exactly where to rate it since it's just part of a whole, but I definitely enjoyed it. I played as Cammile because she was described as rational (didn't disappoint as a character, though kinda underwhelming as a PC), took around 7-8 hours, finished at Level 24. Going to play through as someone else next.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

STO has a shitload of money sinks and a lot of people who boast potent combinations of neurological and personal defects.  For instance, there are projects designed to be completed by an entire fleet working together.  Some notable sperglords have maxed out multiple lines of credit buying money to throw into this pit so they can max out the space station for their vanity fleet where they have roleplay space cat sex.

On top of this, there's also gambling involved! You can buy a key to open a lockbox for like a dollar or something.  The odds of getting a rare ship are roughly 1:10,000, and there's one per lockbox.  Also, most of the best ships in the game (like all the Jem'Hadar ships) can only be obtained in this way, so it's not even P2W, it's Gamble 2 Maybe Win.

What I'm saying is a lot of the pubbies who play this game are broken people.

See when I play Payday 2 I am only doing missions to burn virtual money in a virtual bank, no literally burning money on a virtual bank.

Also glad to see STO is just an EVE clone at this point. sickburns.wav

Do people in EVE compare their video game man being sprayed with a video game fire extinguisher with no effect whatsoever to 9/11 on a regular basis?  Cause that's STO.txt

I don't post about it here but I play Marvel Puzzle Quest pretty regularly and jesus fucking christ you do not want to know about the spending some people get up to there. Five digit figures, I swear to god.

Holy shit, this game still exists?

I was playing this like, 3 times a day before I rage quit, but I forget what exactly made me finally snap.

Event scaling used to be way too Rubberbandy. I could build a team that could beat -anyone- I played, and then I'd log out for two hours, come back and OH HEY I'M IN TWO HUNDREDTH PLACE. The only way I could win an event was if I could log in and time it perfectly so my last several matches all occurred back-to-back within the last two or three minutes of an event. UGH.

They actually fixed that a while back! Rubberbanding is pretty much a nonfactor now, and they've fiddled with scaling, timers and point values so it takes way less playing time to do well.

This is the wishfullest of thinking, perhaps behind hoping that Konami's focus on pachinko machines and its inhuman working conditions will lead to the rebirth of Suikoden.

Also please don't spend real people money on FFRK.

Duck Game - I played the other day with Cid, Fenny, and Snow, and it was a lot of fun. I still got killed a lot but simply learning the pickup/throw/shoot thing helps a lot. I suicided by banana at least three freaking times because I never learn. I still don't feel great about playing with randoms but maybe that will change once I stop dying so much? Or it could just be an internet asshole thing.

I've also notched two playthroughs of Undertale, and it's pretty remarkable for a number of reasons. A lot of people have described it as similar to Earthbound, and it is, but I feel that there's more to it. I enjoyed Earthbound's world, but it has a lot of strange non-sequiturs that don't necessarily serve much purpose. Undertale has its own share of strangeness, but it is all serving the development of the world, specifically your relationship to its characters, and your knowledge of and connection to these characters is paramount depending on your playstyle.

It's getting press as a game where you don't have to fight at all. You can befriend monsters and bosses in battle, but you have to probe their mood and their characteristics before sparing them (in most instances, making it so they they don't want to fight you any longer). You can also take the route where you kill everything you see as in all other RPGs, and unlike in other games, your choice of violence vs pacifism has a very stark effect on the world, not through branching paths but through how the world ends up perceiving *you*. There is a very intensive moral compass, and the characters in the game and the game itself keeps track of all of your decisions, even if you savescum. Sometimes it's subtle, like a line or a small event change, or sometimes the whole tenor of a scene is recontextualized if you've decided to be violent (and people will comment on you if you're murderous, saying that your have a blank emotionless stare).

The main reason why I think the game is remarkable is because of its emotional sincerity and resonance. The scenes leading up to the opening title card are masterful (I think this is basically the demo), in ways that I cannot elaborate on for fear of spoiling. The game's message and morality lessons are pretty simple and perhaps a bit on the nose but they are told extremely well by gameplay mechanics. It is rewarding but difficult to be nice and befriend people, and that's shown in more difficult encounters when you have to spend a couple turns avoiding your enemies' attacks (combat mostly involves a bullet-hell like avoiding of enemy projectiles) before being able to befriend them. On a pacifistic run, you don't get experience for killing people, so you don't gain LVs and thus your HP will never increase. On the other hand, it is pretty easy but numbing to kill everything in your path. Depending on your choices, the game consists of emotional highs or stark darkness with in depth examinations of sociopathy. I think any game that is capable doing both well is worth a look, and it's only $10. It's kind of hard to talk about further without spoiling anything and it's kind of annoying because there actually is so much shit to talk about but it's basically impossible to talk about things I would want to recommend without ruining part of the experience. But, like, seriously, there is some Dark Souls level speculation already about all that is laid in in this world.

*There's a skeleton character named Sans who is basically Fen.
*This game has the worst goddamn, most groan inducing puns in the world, many of them skeleton related.
*The way you spare two dudebro guards is to get them to admit they are gay.
*There's a skeleton dating sim and he has pictures of his biceps and the biceps are wearing sunglasses.
*The game's art style may not be to everyone's taste, but it actually does quite a lot in terms of conveying emotion using very simple changes to a few pixels here and there.
*I don't think encounters are truly random but somewhat set. If you kill everything you see, NPCs in the real world don't appear in towns later, so this game doesn't fuck around when it comes to choice. You can find entire towns unpopulated if you're particularly violent.
*There's a FFVI opera scene with a homicidal robot as Celes.
*As an example of dealing with enemies, there's one enemy whose description is that he seems evil but he might be with the wrong crowd. He usually comes with other enemies and will attack you relentlessly until you spare everybody but him, and then he just flaps his arms.

The game's only ten bucks and I recommend it without reservation.

Spoiler talk

Okay, so the first time I played this, I only knew that you could talk yourself out of battles, but the section with Toriel is really good. She literally hand holds you through tutorial sections and shows you game mechanics, like how to spare enemies. She is just a matronly figure for you, making you pies you like, and she has built up a space for you to stay forever (why did the skeleton want a friend? because she was feeling bonely!!! Har har har). This seems boring and as your character, you only have options asking how to get out. She then takes you to the basement and says that others have died underground and that you had to go through her to get out. You fight her, and I thought that with RPG logic that this was a scripted encounter where the point was to teach you that the world is terrible sometimes and that sometimes killing is unavoidable, so after trying to talk or spare a few times, I start attacking her. She uses a lot of magic attacks that are tough to avoid as a first time player, and it seems that you have to attack her to stop it all. And then, something changes. She uses magic but it falls in a barrier like pattern around you, never touching your character. Toriel cannot get herself to hurt you and is basically accepting death, and this is a perfect example of gameplay mechanics telling story/revealing character. I killed her and then I find that you didn't have to, and I felt fucking terrible about it, but I don't savescum (the game will know if you start over and do this differently). I made my choice and felt like a piece of shit for it, and that strengthened a resolve to avoid killing for the rest of the playthrough, and that's what I did before doing a true pacifist ending next.

*The ending of the neutral path (some killing) involves some Metal Gear Solid-esque interface screw, closing the game from Steam several times and turning into a weird 2D shooter with 3D models of a monster plant. It's pretty gnarly. The characters in the game acknowledge the existence of saving and loading, and this happens in this encounter with the final boss several times, where he is clearly savestating to hit you over and over again. This part is pretty awesome.
*The final encounter on the pacifist run is very Giygas-esque, where there is a hopeless fight and your friends have been absorbed and you have to save them by acting on things that had defined your friendship, like telling horrible puns or making shitty spaghetti, but it is these character moments from the game that have established your attachment to these characters. The music in this is awesome and carries the scenes emotionally.
*The game knows your choices and whether you've killed, and it will know if you reset. You can still get any ending on a replay, but that changes things here and there and it changes the ending, so going no mercy to true pacifist will color the true pacifist ending because you know what you did you fucking monster and the game knows too.
*Anime's not fucking real, that's a load of shit.
*After doing the pacifist ending, you get a message at the end not to restart the world because that is the happiest end state and to start things over would be cruel, and this is very Spec Ops: The Line-like where the right thing to do is to stop playing the game. I then watched a bit of a genocide run, and it is completely unpalatable to me. I could not stomach killing Papyrus. It really reflects the character attachment you end up getting where the notion of these characters dying by your hand just feels so wrong. Later, Undyne is shown to be the heroine with undying resolve against you, the monstrous antagonist of the game. This is when it basically becomes Orsted's rampage in Live a Live, where you are too far gone and have killed too much, and the world is evacuating to escape your senseless wrath. I don't think I will ever do a genocide run. At the end, Flowey talks about doing similar things as you, where he chose to make everyone happy and then started killing just because he wanted to see what would happen, and this is a reflection on the player and on just general game tropes where we become blank eyed killing machines so that numbers go up. It also plays on the concept of EX(perience) and LV (level of violence) on a rather on the nose way, but it does reflect that this "determination" that you have can cut both ways and isn't necessarily a force for good.
*Sans is a character who obviously knows more than he lets on no matter what path you choose ("you're gonna have a bad time"), even though he plays incompetent and likes annoying people. He is basically the final boss of a genocide run and he looks incredibly fucking hard.
*There is so much speculation and lore going on with this game. For example, the equipment that you find is themed (tutu & ballet shoes) and may be linked to the previous six humans. People going through the data have also found a guy named Dr. Gaster who has lines and stuff but we don't know what his role was.
