I can't choose to specialize in scythes and medie-guns, then find one of each in the whole game, anymore?

0/10 game

C'mon, there are trophies specifically for soloing the game, on the hardest difficulty (also there is PRYBAR). Why aren't you already doing this and regaling us all with tales of your misery? (I mean other than because Bloodborne.)

PoE: Finding my protag is pretty squishy so I'm trying out bows a bit. Dying fairly often to just like mobs of animals. BOAR AGE strikes again. Also recruited pyro Rasputin.

Bioshock 2: Minerva's Den - played through

It was fairly decent. Not up to the standard of the maingame, although I'm not sure why, assuming it's not just due to there being less of it in all ways. The entire run being set within a single (large) building may be partially at fault.

The way it assigns weapon keys based on the order you pick them up, rather than them being assigned the same way that they are in the maingame, was pretty annoying but not exactly that impactful. Makes me wonder if the maingame functions the same way if you avoid collecting some weapons the first time you see them.

Not really a fan of the laser, I ended up using the speargun most of the time once I got my hands on it (which seemed bizarrely early - especially since it started off upgraded).

Having Electric Flesh equipped completely trivialised the final boss to the extent that most of the fight I just stood there filling him with spears without even needing to heal, as he was seemingly using an electric attack of some kind on me and he was being helped by two Electric security robots. It's possible that the types of his security robots are randomised and I totally lucked out, I suppose.

Something which annoyed me during the maingame which I forgot to bring up, and was even more annoying here - for some reason, the game won't let you have over 100 saves. Which is fairly easy to run into if you save every few minutes. (Frequency of saving varies wildly depending on how tense I am and how much is going on, but amongst the tattered remnants of my save history I have a run where with 5 saves across 12 minutes for one example.) While the game does let you delete (or overwrite) saves, scrolling lists is broken in the game and runs annoyingly slowly - which isn't too much of a problem with in-game vending machines which don't typically have too many entries - but it is a problem with this list of 100 saves. And. After you delete a save, the interface jumps back to the top of the list!! (Happens on deleting any save, not just the one at the bottom of the list.) Somewhat fortunately, the first time I ran into this problem was sufficiently early enough in the game that I was able to cull enough saves from the current level to bring the previous level's saves on-screen, all the way back to the first level, but the issue of having to cull saves at all persisted and kept happening within shorter and shorter timeframes (as I endeavoured to keep five or so saves from each level). In any case, saves for Minerva's Den are kept in the same pool as saves from the maingame, so it suffered from the worst occurrences of the issue.

Two thieves? That sounds like endless suffering.

The offensive output is pathetic, yes. Temper lets me beat Ogres and the like without hacking away for several turns, but the hit is bad and there's no fix for that yet. I'm basically running from every random in the marsh cave because I have nil offense against non undead and had to save my charges for the Wizards.

I beat the Marsh Cave at L6 with only a dozen or so resets, most of which were on the back end. Both Rakos bit it to the wizards but I won the fight and beat four wizards. Lots of resets after that, mostly from randoms that jumped me and pummeled me into oblivion before I could run. I also had about a half dozen resets walking to the marsh cave. I couldn't afford to use my Bolt 2 charges on randoms, so it was thieves vs packs of enemies and well. ;_;

Holding off on Codename STEAM for now until the double speed update comes out.  I figure if I play the game, might as well wait for when one of it's more annoying flaws is mitigated.

Shantae and the Pirate's Curse: So I come to an area with lots of high ledges that clearly will require extra jumping.  Clearly, this is where I get some sort of special jumping shoes or cape or...

*cannon that allows for quadruple jumping*

...can't say I was expecting THAT.

Bloodborne: Fuck Ebrietas
Nice area though

FF Type 0 HD:
This is not a game made for the big screen and it shows.
I've tried remote play with the Vita but it's pretty bad. I guess this is the kind of thing you can be impressed it for 10 minutes, but the constant little annoyances (sound stuttering, framerate drops sometimes) just make you want to play on anything else instead.

The battle system looks like a mess, but a potentially fun mess, unlike FF15.

Right at the beginning of the game you immediately get introduced to 14 different PCs (!) They are named after cards. There is 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, Jack, Queen, and King. Plus two newcomers named Rem and Machina. (If later in the game, there's a plot twist that reveals that this guy is a robot, I'll lose my mind)
I don't know where 10 is. Maybe the final boss? I hope they didn't just forget that there's supposed to be a 10 too.

Each character has like one personality trait. 5 is Super Dumb Airhead. 9 is Super Dumb Arrogant guy. Queen is Super Smart Mitsuru type. 6 is a punk girl with a scythe that's probably going to say "Whatever" a lot. Etc.

Guys I have this vision of a super great RPG in which every character is named after beef cuts. Sirloin is a mysterious 16 years old with Gackt hair and a troubled past. Flank is this nice girl who's very embarassed about not knowing how to cook.
It will be brilliant.

FF Type 0 actually sounds pretty interesting if you go in accepting that it is a cheap upscaled port rather than a proper PS4/Vita game.

I'm still waiting for SRZ3.2, so I finally sat down and finished 2nd OG in the meantime - I'd had a save mid-battle in the last fight for, no joke, two years. God, that fight is boring. Anyway, it's over now. I one-rounded Euzeth and now I can do an EX-Hard run sometime in the next decade.

POE: Continued poking around Defiance Bay, finished a few quests, hit level 6 and recruited the paladin PC, which makes the complete set. I seem to be done with the basic slate of stuff you can mess with, meaning it's time to either take sides in the city's power struggles or move on. Not sure how I'll approach that.

I think that's only for the games that are part of Fabula Nova Fantastica Most Stupendous Final Fantasy?
It is kind of like Ivalice but I'm pretty sure that no one cares and it's not FF15's setting anymore. Not sure though.

I'd be 100% fine with a game originally meant for portables on the big screen, but the problems are more about Square doing a lazy part and not correcting super simple stuff like the camera.

PoE: Budehuc's seen better days. Boss fight was funny, everyone in my party was in the red by the time I got down there so when I saw he had help I just had everyone run from the room. The boss followed, his friends didn't. Easy win!

Kana just has the best spell names, seriously.

I am getting some really obnoxious mouse input lag with this game. This happening to anyone else? New computer, wouldn't have expected it to have any technical problems.

EDIT: reading Shale's post, I probably shouldn't have just dropped money on hiring a paladin NPC. Oh well!

Ebrietas just killed my motivation right there. That's like the worst Souls boss.

Dying over and over again to the stupid, barely telegraphed overkill charge attack? The rest of her arsenal doesn't seem like much of a problem (the magic burst hurts, but at least you get plenty of warning) but every time it seems like I'm doing well in that fight, wait, no, instantly OHKO'd again. Fuck that shit. (Frue final kind of has this problem too, I only ever died to the trample charge.)

So guys I know this is a huge surprise but I actually started a new file. Maining the Skill/Bloodtinge weapons, because President Maya needs all the guns (and all the gems I guess). Right now I'm using the rifle spear, which is pretty great (the two-handed charge is amazingly effective); I'll be running to Cainhurst as soon as possible to pick up Reiterwhatsit and Evelyn and the katana. Interested to see whether gun offense can ever be a practical thing in its own right (outside of you know CANNON). I guess I should give the repeater a try. Unsurprisingly, game moves pretty fast when you know where everything is (and there's a lot less of Everything than there was in either Dark Souls game). Practically speaking, the only different things left to play with after this are Strength weapons (which I guess is fine since there's three endings to get). I might go axe -> hammer -> wheel/cannon (I think this is maximal ridiculousness for Bloodborne) at some point, but there's a decent chance the game's getting shelved on Tuesday, we'll see. The endgame areas just aren't as fun.

Yeah, "lol you're dead" doesn't work well on the most durable boss in the game.  First time the resource wasting aspect of Bloodborne bosses really annoys me.
I'm also kind of disappointed in that arcane character anyway. I'd like to try another build, maybe a skill one?

FF Type 0 HD: When I got access to the world map and could try out every character in battle, suddendly the game became really great despite everything?

These characters all have very different playstyles and there's at least one cool thing about each.
There were five characters I hated right at the start, but then I tried everyone in battle and now LOVE THEM ALL and find them endearing even outside of battle? It's weird. Somehow the characters I liked the least have all the coolest things.

Like Machina? He's this super bland main character with a dumb Dracula cape. Well in battle he uses dual rapier-drillers. He stabs people with his twin rapiers, then presses the power button on them or something, and the rapiers start drilling? This is actually how he fights.
5 is the super ditzy airhead I mentioned earlier, BUT IN BATTLE she uses a big slow giant mace like she's in Dark Souls even though she's 100 lbs. It's hard to use but pretty fun.
I really really never thought I'd like 7, AKA Lightning Clone Except With White Hair, but she can grab enemies with her whip from afar then shoot a bunch of lightning-sparkly things at them through the whip.

My favourite character has to be 2, in battle she plays the flute and it is really adorable. I also have a soft spot for King, with his ridiculous hair and dual magnums. Also also 3 and 4 and 8 and and ....

You could just build up Skill on your existing character? It seems to synch up well with a lot of other things (whereas I don't see similar overlap between, say, strength and arcane/bloodtinge, or blood/arcane).

It seems that Arcane only scales with elemental damage (like if you've put a fire gem on your weapon), so all those levels would go to waste?

Wild Arms 4 IENINTM or something something.

Miscreation: Revive people who die to Stone Bullet counters, poison him, Shut Out, try not to explode horribly. It works out somehow.
Jeremy 2: His "always get two turns" thing just means he dies twice as fast to poison! That plus the usual array of healing and watching me lose pace, but keeping at least Arnaud alive long enough to win, pays off.
Incubator: Tough since the minions really hit hard. Trying to control them means I can't really pull off the lock with poison/shut out. Battle comes down to Arnaud surrrounded on all sides by corpses and fortunately I'm able to do the last remaining damage from there.
Scythe: Okay, Blast spam is actually legit. Raquel dies before I can get off poison, and he outpaces my healing/revival attempts, so I just need some luck with hitting him towards the end.

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

Nah, it works for weapons that innately have elemental damage too. (The scaling isn't great, but it's there.)

So Reiterpallasch is disappointing. Chibi version of my spear. I'll pass. Trying to get past Logarius so I can get the katana, don't want to dump any rocks on boosting something past +6 because I might want them for that instead? But it is not going well. Wholly incapable of dealing with this guy solo, controller hurled across the room in rage and everything. It's stupidly easy during the first phase and then after he powers up it's basically impossible to get a safe hit in at all. What a fucker.

Also I stand by Rom's long-distance magic bombardment being complete bullshit. There's no indication of where it's going to land, tried running straight forward in hopes of outpacing it, tried moving back, left, right, whatever, the AoE is always right on top of me. Best you can do is mash dodge and hope for the best. Yeah, this is about where the game wore out its welcome last time.

Dark Souls: Low level (<60) Composite Bow + Avelynn co-op run. I run Composite on a quality build, Laggy does Avelynn. Cleared out the DLC except Kalameet, and Nito.

Composite bow is surprisingly effective. Like, it is a legitimate weapon choice with large arrows. I imagined that its effectiveness would fall off as we got past Anor Londo but no, it remains 2legit, dealing around ~300 damage at +15 on 27STR/30DEX. Granted, for bosses it is terrible (though less terrible than the Caestus) but that's what Laggy and his Avelynn is there for, and even then none of the bosses have been particularly difficult.

Most surprisingly, running through the game with a bow changes my opinion of the dungeons a lot.  Like, Upper Blighttown was incredibly fun with a bow. Having range changed the dynamic of the level enough that it felt like playing an entirely new game.  Some areas, unsurprisingly, still suck shit though. Namely, the first half of New Londo Ruins. In fact, after this run I'm inclined to think that New Londo Ruins is a less fun dungeon than Blighttown. Both are still awful though.

In other news jesusfuckingchrist Dark Souls 2 Remastered needs to come out already because we're playing a fucking bow run come on From gimmie my fix

Pillars of Eternity: Mucked around in Act 1, doing some of the easier sidequests. I like the dialogue options in this game, but am having trouble grokking the whole real time with pause battle system. It's way too earlier to tell if I like or dislike it on the whole, but it's definately less intuitive than either Diablo-style hack and slash and turn-based battle systems (both console and PC) right now for me.

GOG has the 1.03 patch up right now but not the hotfix which apparantly fixes some lockpick issue. Anyways Club Nintendo finally worked so I'm parking this for a few weeks, hopefully more patches will have arrived when I pick it back up.

Kid Icarus Uprising: Grabbed this with my ~700 odd coins, since I don't have a Wii U and already bought the two Mario platformers and DKCR3D earlier. Star Fox doesn't interest me and I've heard mostly not good things about Sticker Star, so this felt like the best bet for a game (none of the physical goods blew me away, either).

Thus far, I like the flying controls a lot better than the land controls. Mainly playing the game for the dialogue anyways, which has been pretty great thus far (just finished C4). I'll probably keep the intensity on 2.0 the whole way through, since shooters aren't a genre I like all that much.

RTWP combat has always been and will always be garbage, not to mention that if you start to think too much about POE's system you have to deal with disengagement and that way lies madness. Just set it to easy and enjoy the writing.

Good luck if you actually plan on fighting Nito (I'm guessing you omitted him and Kalameet on purpose). He's by far the worst fight for bows-only simply because neither he nor his minions take any goddamn piercing damage. I caved and called in help for that fight simply because it was a logistical impossibility solo (my guest killed Nito before I was even able to shoot down the mob). Otherwise yeah, composite bow is shockingly effective. Four Kings were reasonably scary because, while I dealt decent damage per hit, I couldn't put the hits out fast enough to prevent the whole mob from spawning, but generally it worked out way better than I'd expected. All this reminds me that sniping does not exist in Bloodborne and lord do I miss that option sometimes.

Anyway, more Bloodborne, jerkface was overcome through the power of jolly cooperation. (I'm pretty sure Mister Potter did a good 75% of the work here, thanks Fenrir.) Multiplayer is really pretty borked in Bloodborne, though, which is sad. The one good point is that it's even easier to find specific other players than it was in Dark Souls 2 (and you don't have to pay for a ring this time). Otherwise, there's a lot negative in the way Bloodborne healing affects online play. Given the expense of healing items, the fact that summons get only half rewards from victory and have reduced HP in someone else's world, it's entirely possible that even on a win a summoned player will barely see any real profit. And if you or your host die (former only being more likely due to reduced HP) you've actually only lost resources. The upshot of this is that because nobody wants to spend non-renewable resources on a fight that has dubious odds of actually paying out (and might have a slim profit margin even if it did), it can actually be pretty hard finding anyone just casually running co-op for the fights where you'd actually most want help (and of course since there are no summon signs in Bloodborne you have no idea whether anyone's even around, all you can do is just sit and wait interminably; and if you don't get anyone and give up, well, that expendable item you burned on summoning still isn't coming back, which is less a logistical problem since insight is incredibly common and more just vaguely insulting). Like, personally, if I want a quick bundle of souls, I'll just go help someone beat up E.T. because he's stupidly easy and I can farm ore while waiting for summons; almost nothing else endgame is really worth the time from a cost/benefit perspective, and I wish I didn't have to look at things that way but Bloodborne resource management kind of mandates it. All of this really makes me miss the supreme user-friendliness of Dark Souls 2.

But enough about things that suck, I have a katana now. In its base form, it's just a regular katana, fast, reasonably damaging, but a painful reminder that I didn't invest enough in Endurance on this run. Ouch, but at least I can fix that part. Transformed, it's the Chaos Blade, except with blood instead of fire, seems faster too. And with the R2 I guess you stab yourself with it and make it, I dunno, double bloody or something so it does ridiculous damage at the cost of even more HP burn. Probably you can already guess I don't use that move much since I'm generally averse to high-risk/high-reward strategies, but it's functional enough a weapon even without that. Anyway, it's pretty neat, and stronger than what I was using, but it's no Blade of Mercy. God do I miss being able to stunlock everything in the upper cathedral ward to death before it could move (and the magic damage might not look like much on paper, but it's a huge help against physically resilient enemies).

Also, I sent everyone possible to the chapel this time (except for the mass murderer of course), and this makes deceptively suspicious chapel caretaker man really happy. It's almost cute, in sort of a creepy way. I wonder if he'll stay that chipper after everyone's dead or crazy.

For Nito with bow only, I suggest wearing the Ring of Fog and Slumbering Dragoncrest Ring, then staying near the entrance.  That worked for me.  Carry a shield offhand to reduce damage from the Miasma.

I did beat Nito in my bow only challenge but I forgot how. I assume I just beat the first skeletons super fast then stayed in the beginning area to not trigger all the other skeletons enemies, then strafe Nito for all eternity.

I downloaded Dark Souls 2 Super Awesome Edition, looked at the glorious 60 FPS, then realized I knew the game too damn much already.

Bloodborne: I went through some chalice dungeons. All the way to the end boss of the regular Pthumerian chalice dungeons, in fact. Unfortunately that end boss (Bloodletting beast) is absolutely ridiculous. He has that Mr Tickle arm extension punch that flies across the room and does all the damage. Right now I am definitely not a bad enough dude.

Chalice dungeons continue to be chalice dungeons. Their design is really boring and confusing, but I like some of the nasty surprises (new enemies / new traps) in wait there. I found some decent unique bosses, like a werewolf and a pyromancer.

The rewards are weak. I mostly get stuff to make EVEN MORE chalice dungeons. Soul drops are about 1/4th of what they are in the normal game, so most of my funds go towards blood vials.
Lots of bad decisions:
1) If you have to go through non RNG'd chalice dungeons to unlock the RNG'd ones, why aren't the non RNG ones not at least slightly better designed?
2) Why have ph4t l00t only appear in RNG dungeons, making the first run through chalice dungeons feel completely unrewarding?
3) Why is chalice dungeon co-op almost impossible between strangers?
4) Why are rooms so big?

Having fought Logarius a bunch more times now (BTW El Cid is being humble), and having found a way to destroy his flying swords, I now really really like this boss even more. I now actually find his first phase more dangerous than the second, but the strategy needed for the second is very different (First phase, you need to be on the attack, second phase, you need to be on the defensive and punish his strikes)

I stuck with Harry the Arcane Guy; Ludwig's sword is good enough now that I found some nice +fire gems and jacked arcane up to 38. Unfortunately this makes any decision with the ph4t l00t dead easy: Get the +fire damage gems, throw away everything else.

The bit where he spawned the sword inside scenery was very rude, though.

EDIT: what are the restrictions on #3, anyway? I had hoped that if nothing else co-op would make hacking through the more tedious chalice levels less of a boring thing, but I don't immediately see any way to set that up.
