It'd be so easy if you just had to mash that button for four hours to get that ending!
But no.

Shovel Knight: Finished!  76% Completion, etc.  Dunno if I'll go for 100% or just do a straight up replay at some point, but yeah, the game is good.

One thing I will comment on is the constant "The game is like Mega Man!" remarks, to which I say "...not really."  The physics don't feel particularly Mega Man like, and most obviously is Mega Man is a "Jump and Shoot Man!", Shovel Knight is more a "Jump and Melee" man which makes a huge difference.  To be honest, I found more in common with Zelda 2 than Mega Man in terms of gameplay.

-Primary attack is Melee.  You can even get a "Projectile at full Health" upgrade.
-Down Stab Attack.
-Sub Weapons are gotten throughout the game and feel like means to compliment your character with either platforming or attacks.  This is contrast to Mega Man weapons where in they're meant to replace your attack outright should the situation arise (granted, X in MMX4 and on, his weapons were more "compliment the Buster" style, especially in X8)
-Towns very similar to how Zelda 2 did them.

It's similar to Mega Man more in superficial ways.  The Graphic style, the music, end-game Boss Rush, the fact that your Knight's default color is blue, water physics, and boss naming scheme are totally Mega Man.  Someone noted "Stage design is very Mega Man like" and eh, I think the graphics make it seem more Mega Man than it is.  Considering the Pogo Gimmick and how often you break blocks to progress, if anything, the stage design is a lot more like Ducktales (which granted is also Capcom) than Mega Man.

Game is also more linear...to a degree.  You have several options of who to fight when, but you can't progress until current draw is defeated.  Yeah, a few specific Mega Man games did this (MM7 and MM8 in particular.)

...none of that makes this a bad game of course!  More just saying "Don't go in expecting Mega Man" but rather "Go in expecting a solid 2D Platformer!" and you won't be disappointed.  That aside, game makes obvious nods to other classic 8 Bit franchises too.  Spectre Knight's stage is a complete and total homage to Castlevania, down to Spectre Knight himself pretty much being Death from Castlevania, the overworld is a straight rip from Super Mario Bros 3, and in some stages it pulls the "lights off and can only see during Lightning Flashes" gimmick that Ninja Gaiden 2 has pulled on occasion.

The game got a lot of praise and generally was worth it.  Apparently it's on Sale in the Eshop right now, so anyone with a 3DS or Wii U who is interested should pick it up NOW, even if you're not going to play it for a while.  It's definitely worth playing if you at all like 2D platformers, especially if you have nostalgia for the 8 Bit era.

It's also on sale on Steam for the same $10 that Nintendo is charging, so if it sounds good to you on any platform, buy it now (before 1 PM Eastern today on Steam, before next Friday on WiiU/3DS).

Yeah the melee vs ranged thing is a big enough difference between Megaman and Shovel Knight that they don't feel the same, especially since enemy design is dramatically different as a result.
The mechanics for moving around are a lot closer to Megaman than Zelda 2. Shovel Knight only really feels like Zelda 2 when fighting regular knights with shields.

A major Megaman influence in stage design is how each stage seems to rely on one or a few platforming gimmicks you don't see on any other stage in the game (except perhaps in the last boss rushy one)

Rayman Origins - Completed! This was a lot of fun, anyone who likes 2D platformers should give it a spin (it's for pretty much every active system in 2011). Was a bit disappointed in the final stage, it's really just a normal stage and rather than fight the final boss, you chase him until he crashes his ship and it explodes. It jumps out at me because of Super Mario 3D Land which I'd beaten just previously; 3D Land isn't nearly as good a game overall but has a great final confrontation, Rayman is kinda the opposite. I can't be too disappointed though because the last "normal" stage (the fourth-to-last) is nasty as hell in a way you'd expect, and the second-to-last stage is distilled platforming terror and great fun. The third-to-last stage features the best scene in the game by far, I don't want to spoil it because it is so surreal that it has to be seen. Play it!

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U - Played some of this with Meeple and JSH yesterday. I find the lag frustrating but most of the time it's not too bad. 75m is satan.

Dark Souls 2 - Nope.  Gargoyles is fucking terrible.  Just the worst.  You know what made original Gargoyles not fucking terrible?  Some time with one of the gargoyles alone for more than 3 fucking seconds.  Fuck this fight and fuck how important it is to Lost Sinner.

You can summon there.  It's hard to keep your summon around with all the invasions (at least it was back when DS2 came out) but it is totally possible to summon.

Large/greatclub +10 at 40 strength and you should be able to demolish them in two hits (but that goes for most things in Dark Souls 2, it's not exactly news that great hammers are a bit too good). I usually do gargs -> Lost Sinner last anyway because that entire gauntlet is substantially worse than the lead-up to any of the other Old Ones in my opinion.

I'm pretty sure the only bosses genuinely off-limits for co-op are the rats. The trouble with the gargoyles is just getting someone before you get invaded. Not sure about Darklurker because I usually skip that entire quest (it's by far my least favorite area in the game).

I honestly never fight the gargoyles; the key just gets you a Fire Seed and makes Lost Sinner slightly easier (it's a ridiculously easy fight in the first place, just circle strafing.  I have never played new game+, can't comment on it).  Sometimes I'll come back near the end of the game and then they're a joke, but that doesn't mean much.

One thing I do actually like a lot about DS2 is that you can skip most of the first half of the game's content.  I usually have 1 million soul memory before killing all four Great Lords, and can skip one of them.

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten

Heard about this from SnowFire's 2014 games review. It is a Tower Defense game. Djinn loves Tower Defense games, even though they are all basically the same. What makes Defender's Quest stand out (certainly isn't its name) is that it actually has something resembling a story and characters, which is surprisingly rare in the genre, which tends to sell itself solely on aesthetic and one minor quirk to the basic gameplay formula between iterations.

Defender's Quest apparently started life as a fairly polished free-to-play flash game. The for-sale version on Steam is basically just a nicer-looking version of the flash game with better coloring on the art, updated sprites, and a more streamlined menu/UI. These are actually all very welcome updates and turn Defender's Quest into an amusing and well-polished version of the generic Tower Defense formula. I shall henceforth think of it as the "ur-Tower Defense game". If anyone happens across any more Tower Defense games that follow this formula, I totally wanna play those too.

Defender's Quest is a ton of fun. I don't love it as much as Orcs Must Die or Defense Grid (Play those games Djinn!) but it does well in spite of levels not being the most balanced mechanic for a tower defense game.

Djinn's thought process: I like RPGs! I like Tower Defense games!

I like Defender's Quest! I wonder why? Probably because it's what happens when someone said: "Hmm... Tower Defense games are cool, but how can I make them more like RPGs?"

I do rec Orcs Must Die as well DJ.  It doesn't have explicit leveling like Defender's Quest, but it still has progression mechanics.  They do rely more strongly on player skill than DQ though.

Dark Souls 2 - Summoning worked and then I stupidly didn't use he bonfire to go level before progressing the tiny bit past the bonfire.  Queue many deaths as I retrieve my souls from npc invasion with dogs.

Corpse Party: It's good!  Unfortunately the DL decided to eat my comments about it.  Pretty rare nowadays that the back button won't recover text, but it managed it here.

So, see the review in the 2014 games thread, no longer write-up I suppose.  Basically RPGMaker sprite games are better scares for me than stuff like Resident Evil it seems.  Jump scares & weird mutated horrors are a dime a dozen; slowly dying of thirst is worse.  The game has very well designed scenarios for the most part about setting up something scary to happen, but making you push into it anyway.  (Even if it also has a weird bathroom obsession sometimes in its scenario design.)  Also music & sound effects hype goes here, too.

Spoilery comments more for my own good (that I happened to have backed up) that Andrew or Nitori can chime in on if they want, or not:

* Not really a question, but I'm totally with the Corpse Party LP on Yoshiki & Ayumi actually getting work done and being the real main characters, while Mochida mopes around trying to rescue damsels in distress.  Helps they actually have character.

* So why did Yoshie attack Naomi in the Infirmary in C1?  She just gone crazy?

* At the end of C2, Yoshikazu ganks Yoshiki, but not really.  Fine, he's actually kind and checking his blows because he was cursed, I get it.  Except...  he straight-up kills Yuuya & the cameraman's assisstant later on.  What was the difference?  Yoshiki just get lucky after all?

* At the end of C3, does Naho send Mochida over to Naomi really just because mwahaha I want to see you suffer by arriving too late?  Or was it actually trying to help?  Huh.

* In C5, Sachiko helps save Yuka, and then she & Yuka have a little chat that ends with Sachiko threatening her.  When next we see Yuka, she's in the annex with a tape player, and she says nothing of the incident.  WTF happened here?  (Considering that the game was actually good about explaining what happened during a certain other blackout period...)

* I wish the game went into a little more detail about why exactly Naho posted an intentionally screwed up charm online.  Ayumi accuses her of trying to get "customers" for Kibiki or something, but she denies this, but claims she'll do anything for Kibiki.  I'm not sure how seriously we can take anything darkening-Naho says, but it was normal Naho who posted the charm…   okay, so Naho comes home from school, finds a note that Kibiki has gone to Heavenly Host, posts the wrong charm details online, then travels to Heavenly Host herself.  So was this something to make Kibiki's story better after all?  A bizarre way of mounting a rescue mission to Kibiki?  A monument to him after she realized he wasn't coming back?  Anyway, this is arguably the most evil thing anyone does in the game - at least Sachiko & the ghost children can say they were influenced by the dark spirit or curse or whatever, while this was perfectly normal Naho who got everyone else sent there.

* Morishige & Ms. Shishido have rather anti-climatic endings.  Morishige gets his epic freak-out, which was pretty cool, although the lines about "oh mayu you were what was keeping me alive (in high school)" seemed overkill from the writers.  Anyway, I'd have tried to keep him around in a crazed state of despair, but fine, the curse, I can see committing suicide.  (Although why isn't his cell phone ever useful for the pics later?!  Alas.)  Ms. Shishido, however, ugh.  It'd have been perfectly fine to kill her in C2, but if they're going to have her survive, I'd like it if she mattered in some way - bring a clue or an item to Our Heros.  The way she dies is very random - I don't normally think of demon summoning circle as "giant trapdoor to the abyss."  It's especially weird when right next door is an incinerator with an apparent trap door into the basement & pool, and Our Heros fall into that without incident!  Basically they create a not-that-deadly threat and have her immediately sacrifice herself to it.  Wish they'd figured out something better here.  (At least the EXChap confirms she survives for a very short time afterward in the pit?!)

* In the end: Wait, ghost girl Yuki becomes a new Sachiko, wtf?  What does that even mean?  I guess this is sequel-bait, but darn it, I came here to make a crazed girl repent, let me have my victory darn it.  I guess the darkness animating the place doesn't need the original Sachiko or something and will take any ol' ghost and convince them they're Sachiko.

* Hmm, nobody ever comments on how Ayumi Shinozaki has the same last name as Sachiko Shinozaki.  I guess the extended family are all spirit mediums, which is why Yoshie & Sachiko & Naho continued on after death.  Still weird that nobody comments on this in-game.

* The bit about "and nobody even remembered their existence" was your average OH SNAP extra plot twist, but, uh, doesn't make tons of sense.  It clearly wasn't true for everyone - Ayumi knows who Naho is, and she got swallowed by the school - and same with the deaths in the 70's and the mysterious disappearances then.  Oh well.  This is me being a nitpicker I guess, just let their tragic disappearances be noticed darn it.

* Yeah, yeah, psychic powers, etc., but..  was Sachiko really a student at Heavenly Host in 1973?  How come the principal didn't notice?  If she wasn't a student, shouldn't this have been noted in the newspaper articles, that she was just a random mysterious girl?  (Yes, Kibiki's research does show she disappeared later, but I'm talking even before later, like "oh you must be so scared, who's your mommy & daddy so we can take you home.")

Perhaps some of this will be answered in Book of Shadows.

Pokémon Alpha Sapphire - Fortree and Mossdeep gyms down. Winona's design, once again, feels pretty tight in its bases (a gym leader based primarily on stalling you out? That's pretty neat!), though my team was honestly well-equipped to deal with it. The Swellow ate Crobat Aerial Aces as soon as it started spamming Double Team, an Overheat from Camerupt shattered all the hopes and dreams of her Skarmory pretty much as soon as it came out and Pelipper is a -horrible- idea against a Mega Manectric with Discharge. Altaria was pretty damned neat, though: Roost, Cotton Guard and Earthquake actually make for effective walling measures against physicals and provide a counter against Electric types (the Earthquake -did- OHKO Mega Manectric...). Dragon Breath also provides coverage and possible paralysis hax if things go wrong, but they honestly didn't. The fight essentially ended once I landed Toxic poison with Crobat hax: Confuse Ray, chip and let the poison work its magic. Didn't hurt that Altaria kept losing turns to Confuse and wasted Roosts uselessly.

Tate and Liza were frankly disappointing, though. The idea with Lunatone and Solrock was honestly pretty cute (Light Screen and Hypnosis on Lunatone and Sunny Day and Solar Beam on Solrock could be very scary, and Rock Slide is pretty dangerous MT given the decent power running off STAB and non-fail attack, especially if you run a slow party), but Reflect on Gardevoire and Mega Sceptile in general just made very quick work of the fight - they could've used two more Pokés after Lunasol. After Reflect, I lucked out on a Hypnosis attempt and managed to Calm Mind, which kept Gardevoire offense and healing viable with Draining Kiss while Sceptile chomped away at Solrock's HP with Giga Drain, mostly mitigating its Rock Slides. Ended up winning the fight with absolutely no losses.

So, since it's been a long chain of evolutions and a slot swap in-between gyms, further evaluations on current party!

Sceptile/Mega Sceptile (L41 - Giga Drain/Sword Dance/Leaf Blade/Low Sweep) - Well, that's a lot of offense and speed. Does very well walling Water types and generally provides physical damage now that I benched Metang for the Milotic experiment, which will be detailed later. It has become oddly hard to kill in spite of the bad defensive spread due to Giga Drain off -that- S. Atk being crazy good. Sword Dance makes for a good setup move for sweeping shenanigans, and Low Sweep gives it something to do against pesky Steel types. Not much utility, but sweeping is the name of the game and that it does well.

Milotic (L39 - Surf/Recover/Light Screen/Toxic) - So, it actually was worth picking up that Feebas. I pumped it full of HP and Defense EVs and it's become horrendously hard to kill. Competitive as an ability also has oddly useful stints, since it makes those Surfs kinda obscene. Across the board tanking with competent offense and acceptable speed honestly goes really far, though I want that Ice Beam TM so it can have more coverage. I probably can make do without Light Screen anyway, given the presence of Gardevoir in my team.

Gardevoir (L40 - Psychic/Draining Kiss/Calm Mind/Reflect) - Sweeps like a champ and Draining Kiss does -wonders- to its survivability in conjunction with Calm Mind. Reflect also covers the suspect pdur. I considered handing it Dazzling Gleam, but Draining Kiss just covers its defensive bases along with handing it non-Psychic coverage to such a baffling degree it's not even funny. Very good, and I expect murder and death once I get my hands on that Gardevoirite.

Crobat (L40 - Acrobatics/Poison Fang/Confuse Ray/Fly) - Keeps doing Crobatty things. Acrobatics is goddamn awesome without held items (effective 110 Power off STAB? Sign me up!), though I wish I could spare the Fly slot here. Poison Fang has been way more useful than I'd like to admit, both for hitting some odd weaknesses and haxing hilarious Toxic procs (see how that landed me a secure victory against Winona's Altaria). Trivializing Ground attacks also helps. Its hilarious stat lead has waned, but its offense/speed/utility mix remains quite desirable.

Camerupt (L40 - Overheat/Yawn/Lava Plume/Earth Power) - Does the same thing it did as Numel: massive damage in Fire and Ground variety. Durability sucks less now that it reached its evolved form, but speed's simply unsalvageable. Considering how -useful- having high-damage STABs off those two elements is, though, can't say I'm dissatisfied with this development. Munching through Electric types like they're made of paper doesn't hurt either.

Manectric/Mega Manectric (L39 - Discharge/Charge Beam/Thunder Wave/Strength) - More damage, now in anti-flier variety. Thunder Wave remains its sole utility, but it's damned good for what it is, and Discharge off the S. Atk and Spe combo fries things. Charge Beam, once again, works as a decent gamble move, but now it's a low-end sweeping gamble rather than a 2HKO check. Intimidate's also pretty nice against those physicallers.

Bayonetta 2: Finished chapter 5, unlocked the Nintendo reference costumes. It's cool that costumes come with gameplay changes now, and hilarious that the one you're forced to purchase in order to get access to the rest is the fursuit.

Mario 3D World: Started a fresh file, cleared up to world 2-2 with all green stars. Missing a few stamps, though...I wonder if that'll block me off from anything. *Checks secret world requirements* O_o Eep.

Ace Attorney Investigations 2: I'd managed to ignore/forget that there was a usable translation patch until now. Finished the first case in one sitting, and I'm now into the second day of case 2. So far it's fun, although not a big step up from AAI. Logic Chess is interesting, though it also has potential to descend into trial and error. Also, I'm sure I'm not the first one to say so, but I'm hugely impressed with the translation team - every part of the game looks and feels like a professional release. Dang.

Pokemon Omega Ruby - Just completed the maingame and I'm about to start working on Episode Delta. I used Delphox, Sceptile, Empoleon, Gardevoir, Sandslash, and Swellow. Swellow is not a very good endgame Pokemon, but he's just so darn cute. :) I had a lot of trouble with Steven, mostly because my team is poorly set up to deal with Cradily. He hits weakness on almost everyone and no one hits a good weakness on him, and his Confuse Ray is a bitch. Due to him being a massive pain in the ass, I equipped people with the confuse healing berries and tried to just go to town with Gardevoir, even though Sludge Bomb was a pain in her ass. That worked really well. Then Steven decided to be stupid and put out Claydol vs. Gardevoir, and I just buffed a lot and when Mega Metagross came out I just hoped that the Double Team spam would work out. It did, and I dodged and Draining Kissed my way to victory.

STAB Draining Kiss is stupid on a character with such high SpA and Calm Mind. Gardevoir is still the lategame MVP, unsurprisingly.   Empoleon is decent but god is he a slowpoke (faster than Camerupt at least!). He of course made Mega Camerupt a joke. <_< Delphox is quite handy, STAB on fire and psychic managed to both be quite useful, and this game is pretty light on the Geodude / water-type spamming, so her weaknesses weren't as exposed.  Sceptile loves getting Grass Pledge. Makes a world of difference to his midgame performance. I should have tried to find Giga Drain but I didn't have the Internet to FAQ it. ;_; Sandslash does its job as the faster, more fragile Graveller.

This game's plot is actually not as terrible as the more recent games'. I was a little caught off guard by that.

I also second Snow's mocking of Liza and Tate. Sceptile says hi.

I GOT TO PET PIPLUP IN POKEAMIE. MY LIFE IS COMPLETE.

Shale -- Stamps are only required for the mega super secret world, which is silly. I ended up doing it because I became addicted to the game, but I might take a wait and see approach to that. The first three aftergame worlds you can do without collection.
