Wild ARMS 4 Annual Casual Run completed.

Was Great. I missed being able to take my time and dick around, but once you learn strats, you just get so used to them. I beat the game in 12:59:55, which is faster than the last casual run IIRC by like 4 hours. No idea if I'm going to do any post  game stuff yet though. Need to get back into speedrunning, but this was a good break.

Some pointless stats, because DL loves stats:

Wipes: 1. http://www.twitch.tv/tideruglia/c/5855344. I learn something new every time I play this game.
Yulie Deaths: 11
Times Healed: 10

These are both a bit higher than I anticipated. Generally speaking, most fights only have healing once if any. Yulie deaths sometimes occurred more than once per battle though. Still decent when you consider the below:

Killing blows dealt (who gets the Kill bonus XP) -
Jude: 49 (21.21%)
Arnaud: 49 (21.21%)
Yulie: 38 (16.45%)
Raquel: 94 (40.69%)

Total battles fought is 230. One kill unaccounted for because Kresnik took it. So 231 total battles. Out of all those, I basically only had Yulie died or use healing in about 4%. Kill stats, Jude cheated a little because he got a point for solo Kresnik duel and Illsveil where he was segregated from the main group. If you take those out, he's about 44 or something. Stats are not really that surprising. Intrude gives  Raquel essentially MT, Arnaud doesn't, which explains the huge difference there. They do kinda emphasize my point with Yulie Material summons, which are often times too slow to matter. Could keep track of more pointless stats the next time for fun if I think of others.

Super Mario Kart - Finally finished 100cc Special Cup, ending with a celebratory yell. Now there's 150cc, tempting me... Mostly played as Peach, but I've been playing around a bit with Koopa Troopa and I even used Bowser! His acceleration is terrible but if you can get ahead he's pretty cool. Not sure how much I will dick around in 150cc if any, it seems to be calling my name though.

Mass Effect 2 - Started this. I currently have bitchy science lady and the token nice guy in my party. I ended up making a Vanguard, did a lot of face sculpting and playing around with the hair and eyes and stuff, and then jumped into making myself a fabulous pink and green armor suit. <3

Oh yeah, like the only thing wrong with the amazing camp choices in ME2 is that it took until ME3 where you could canon be gay.  Some of the choices you can make are straight out of a 70s gay disco bar.

Do the renegade prompts if you can. They're always worth it.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night: I'll add two new rules:
- No familiar
- Any rule can be broken to unlock stuff

I went through all of the Castle of Balance except the final boss gauntlet.
The game definitely got a bit rougher around the chapel, then a lot rougher in the coliseum. I learned to just avoid invisible rapier ladies, among other enemies.

I don't think I can actually beat Richter for the bad ending, because he's jumping all over the place like a rabbit, and his Holy Water Item Crush does a ton of damage (multiple hits on a 0 def Alucard) and is unavoidable. (Edit: Oh right, the mist. I need to try this out)

Bosses that
1) can be reached by a fist only Alucard standing or crouching
2) stay in one place, at least once in a while
just die to a barrage of punches (= MASH SQUARE), and that's every boss so far except Doppleganger, Minotaur/Werewolf, Orlox and Gandalfoon.

Minotaur / Werewolf aren't moving at the very beginning of the battle, I just Hokuto no Ken'd Minotaur, then beat Werewolf easily enough because -I- am the super bare handed badass. My main strategy was crouching in front of him and punching.

Orlox was really hard at low HPs, he has to be harmed by impractical jump-punches and he throws fireballs all over the place. Plus, the lower his HPs the faster his attacks. I beat him by mist-teleporting between his legs and crouch-punching him there. It works.

Granfaloon ah ah ah ah oh god.
Essentially his pattern depends on how many parts have been destroyed, roughly it's:
- 0 parts destroyed: Not much, just throwing a few zombies around
- 1-2 parts destroyed: More zombies thrown around
- 3 parts destroyed: Less zombies thrown around, but a new laser attack rarely used
- 4-7 parts destroyed: Laser attack used more often
- 8 parts destroyed: ARMAGEDDON
He's pretty harmless w/ 3 parts destroyed so I aimed for that. I beat him by destroying all three parts on his right side because then he wouldn't be able to throw zombies at my face while I was attacking the core. Attacking the lower right and middle right side were easy enough. I beat the upper side by flying next to it as a bat, transforming to human form, punching, then retransforming into a bat, etc. Then the core went down pretty fast.

Symphony of the Night doesn't actually hold up very well as a Castlevania game. There is way too much backtracking, there's no balance, level design can get really empty, there are too many secret rooms.
The inverted castle, while super cool, has no level design at all, everything is inverted so nothing is designed to be interesting, but you have unlimited movement like you're freaking Kirby so whatever. Let's throw enemies with higher stats standing in there and call it a day.

SOTN's riding entirely on style: The aforementioned inverted castle, pressing up near a cliff, the water fountain turning into blood, the confessional, backgrounds, music, that animation you see before fighting Doppleganger, art style, attacking the shopkeeper from the lower floor, all the food, divekicks, owl fighters being sad when you kill their owls, etc.
Style does carry SotN pretty far.  But I think it fares really badly nowadays compared to the more modern Order of Ecclesia and to a lesser extent Portrait of Ruin, which have way less backtracking, better level design, more satisfying combat, and cool bosses.

I pretty much say whatever I actually agree with, which may not stack me up the most points but at least makes me feel the most satisfied.

Mass Effect 2 - Recruited Sir Psycho Sexy (Garrus) and now I am trying to get Mordin (just saved his second in command, and now I am doing whatever other things he wanted). I ended up going with less 80's disco armor this time, decking out in black and red instead of pink and green. The person I really have the hots for right now is Aria, who is like my old girlfriend except evil. The gameplay is certainly less clunky, although the health system I am a bit eh on so far.

Sadly her biggest stuff is either in side stories or in Mass Effect 3 DLC (which I haven't done yet).  She is pretty fucking rad just as a side character in ME2 though.

She's actually not in ME3, just the Omega DLC, so get that I guess.

Not that you probably needed to be told because the ME story DLCs are all pretty good.

I probably won't buy the DLC. Bank account is a bit anemic at the moment. >_>

Mass Effect 2 - Mordin recruited, chatted him up, it was good times. Probably gonna visit Anderson next.

Ciato if you don't get the Citadel DLC when you hit ME3 then I will bloody well find a way to give it to you. It's the best part of the series and you owe it to yourself to play it.

Mass Effect 2 - Upgraded my weapon and armor on the ship, I get the feeling this is going to be plot important somehow... mostly spent the last hour of gameplay digging around for metals to add to the ship. I guess I'm gonna try to get Jack now?

Yeah, if you're playing ME3 on Steam or something I would gift it to you. Citadel is definitely Mass Effect character interaction party porn.

SJW Inquisition: Started this up as a female Qunari dual dagger rogue. I don't know much about what's going on plotwise but the inclusion of Varric from early on is welcome. Combat doesn't feel smooth or particularly satisfying, which is probably due to coming from Dark Souls 2. I'm playing on hard but have yet to really need tactical mode yet, but I'm sure I will fairly soon. I can't wait to see the content that is trying to turn me into a feminist liberal homosexual.

I'm pretty much doing everything that everyone in the world could possibly need right now like gathering meat. I'm fairly sure my compulsiveness about doing every objective on a map means that I'll be in the Hinterlands forever.

AAI2: Case 4 started out really good, but just kept going downhill. The opening is a great hook, and for all that amnesia is a hackeneyed trope it's not something Ace Attorney has really used in a case before (2-1 doesn't count), so I was looking forward to reconstructing memories, etc. Instead, NOPE, recycled "assistant falsely accused of murder" plot, a villain who quickly turns into a von Karma/Gant rehash, and the final confrontation just doesn't make much sense in general. Bleh. Hopefully case 5 ends things on a high note.

DO NOT do that. Not only will you get bored but there's areas that are tuned for after the first act (so Tier 2 weapons and armor, level 8-11 or so).

Case 4 is the low point for sure.  The villain probably would have been better if his design wasn't so dull.

That villain type has been done before both better and worse, but I do agree that it has been done far too many times at this point.

Fortunately the final villain is ridiculously better. I don't even like the last case that much (probably less than case 4; the first three are definitely the best, although the last two both have their moments), but the villain, once they make their appearance, is outstanding.

I got so freaking tired of the goggle animation.

Oh, I should mention that I did like Courtney's part in the ending, it was a nice way to put her previous assholery in some context and not do a total 180 on her character. And whoever translated C4 was clearly having fun with the script, which I appreciate.

(Also, Franziska whipping people who deserve it: Always good.)

I'm pretty much doing everything that everyone in the world could possibly need right now like gathering meat. I'm fairly sure my compulsiveness about doing every objective on a map means that I'll be in the Hinterlands forever.

I thought the combat felt pretty wonky, particularly as a rogue.  If I want to stand behind a dude and backstab him while he's hitting my tank I now have to perform some fiddly movement every time the characters get jostled or I'll just be spamming my stabs into thin air.  I guess if my character followed the target to stay in range automatically (like in Origins) it would detract from the new action game experience?

You will probably enjoy the "Kill All the Straight White Men" war table operation.

EDIT: oh yeah so I played DA3.  There was some party dialogue I liked but mostly everything was tedious.  I have seen some reviews touting this fact so maybe I'm the one with the problem.  Spell combos don't exist anymore, there's fewer spell types, and there's more straight copies of other elemental spells (you have Wall of Fire and Wall of Ice, Fire Mine and Ice Mine, etc. so picking one tree over another doesn't actually lead to different gameplay).  Crafting and upgrade menus are cumbersome and terrible -- why can't I sort my weapon recipes by tiers so I can skip to the best ones without going through the whole list? why do I have to back all the way out of the crafting menu to compare the stats of a weapon I could craft to the weapon I've already got equipped? why can't I automate the process of swapping old upgrade bits into my new equipment? -- and there is a discouraging proportion of busywork quests.  The villain cast is a joke.  Montilyet is a hottie.

Mass Effect 2 - I just finished the major mission after retrieving the first round of party members, and ran into the always lovable bitch Ashley. The gameplay is mostly unexciting and repetitive but it's a lot less obtrusive and clunky than the first game's, which is still a pretty big step up. I do miss the resource management within combat that was more prominent in the first game and the larger skillsets of the other PCs, but I don't miss my allies being slaughtered all the time nor do I miss anything related to the Mako. I've been rotating between Garrus, Mordin, and Miranda for PCs.

Much like the first game, the game is character-focused rather than plot-focused, but the game does a better job of engaging you in the missions anyway, and the plot setup with Cerberus is definitely an interesting hook. The character work is definitely better in this game -- it has my two favorite characters from ME1 as PCs (although I haven't recruited Tali yet) and has some other good characters added in (like Mordin and Miranda). The game feels more cohesive than the first narratively as well, although I do miss Anderson being around. I'm going to start working on loyalty missions or going to recruit Tali, whatever I decide to do first.

Oh yeah by the way I can gift Nuclear Throne or LISA to some of you guys.
I want to support the devs and I have a job so I don't care. Just send me a PM if you are pretty interested in either.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night: The Early Inverted Castle bosses are still scrubs even when you have basically nothing. The mummy killed me once, but then I got close to him, and Crouched + Mashed Square super fast.
Regular enemies can be pretty insanely hard on the other hand, so I just mist past some rooms.
Alucard is pretty badass with a purple cape, I suggest that. It's something like R20 V10 B20 + R10 V5 B10. I spent way too much time changing cape colors.

Ranking mechanics in games

In yon early days of matchmaking, there was no matchmaking, everything was casual "join the game / room" with no idea of fair match-ups.

Later on, people stole ELO from chess and made some minor modifications.  This worked great!  Except it turns out people on the Internet are horrible and will treat low-ranked players badly and whine, and even for solo-games, it turns out that knowing exactly how bad you are is very disspiriting.  Stupid reality!  I want a cookie.

Some games got around this via a monotonically increasing grind upwards, but this risks losing the skill side entirely.  So the way most modern games do this is to hide your true ELO but then let you chase some meaningless monotonically increasing value that only goes up, e.g. MTG Planeswalker Points or SC2/LoL League Points.

--

http://us.battle.net/heroes/en/blog/17345415/coming-soon-hero-league-and-draft-mode-1-9-2015

So why am I rambling about this?  Well, I don't play ranked League, and am miles away from being high enough level to play ranked Heroes of the Storm if I even had interest (I don't), but HotS has inexplicably gone for full-on Asia style grinding in its Hero League it's introducing.  Wins give you ~200 points, losses are -60 points, and unlike hidden ELO systems (League) where the points are irrelevant, the points are actually all that matter in Hero League.  Each rank is 300 points, and there are *50* ranks from 50 to 1.

Win 25% of your games, hit rank 1 260 hours later!  Win 100% of your games and still be rank suck if you don't play enough.  Nice design guys.

"Good job coming up with a system that forces people to play our game all the time, fellas."

(I must admit I am somewhat perplexed by games like Diablo 3 that don't have any ads or in-game purchases but still have the whiff of the hamster wheel.  Maybe Blizzard has forgotten how to not do this.)

You know the really sad part is that WoW is actively trying to step out from needing to suck you into the game?  They aren't doing a great job, but you really only need to convince the player to play enough over a month that the sub is worth it, not that you need to log in every single day.

They are still pretty far from perfecting it, but they are getting there.

But that is probably the difference between Subscription model vs F2P where you need touch time to get transactions through sunk cost and play fatigue.

To their credit, a lot of the things that used to be done by farming (acquiring consumables and crafting mats) is now done by followers for you over long spans of time in a system they definitely didn't lift from other games even a little bit. Progression raiding still requires you shit in a tube sock but there's more game elements that seem to be set up for queuing them up before you leave for work and collecting the results when you get home.
