Y'know I was always confused at people who hyped Toad - surely Mario is far superior if for some reason you actually value picking things up fast, since he can do that and actually jump decently well - so that does explain a lot; every person I've known who did so was a Nintendo Power reader.


Long Live the Queen - 100% achievements get, which of course includes tracking down all the hilarious ways to get yourself killed. Fun game! I'm not really sure what type of person to recommend it to, besides people with good taste obviously.

Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance - Randomly replaying this, actually watching the scenes for the first time in ages. There are actually some good things to say about the writing, moreso than many FEs, and some not so good. Sadly Ike grates a bit more than he used to watching things again after playing FE10, I find, but Soren remains excellent.

PW DD: I'm halfway through case 3, the game has been pleasant enough if not ground breaking.


 I'm a bit bothered by the completely obvious culprits. Usually by case 3 we get at least one?
BTW I am Aristotle MEANS and the end justifies the MEANS

I should play AAI2 sometimes, I liked the change of pace brought from playing as Edgeworth.

Mmm PW3's first few cases were also completely obvious with their killers, but otherwise you are right. I see where you're coming from even though I do quite like some of the cases where you know which smug bastard did it but you can't prove it. That said, there are some less obvious ones on the way.

I definitely recommend the DLC case by the way (it's a good one) unless you think there is a high probability you'll be Ace Attorney'd out by the end of the maingame.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - Back to this game after years. I love Squawks and I love the game saving your lives after you turn the game off. However, I hate electric crabs and cannonballs.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse:  So it's a DBZ fighting game with light (very light) MMO elements.  The story mode is actually pretty neat.  The premise is that there are these people changing the history of DBZ in bad ways.  Like Raditz dodging Piccolo's Special Beam Cannon and living, or Frieza deciding to skip the theatrics and just go straight to his final form (which doesn't give Goku time to finish healing and get to the battle).  So your custom character travels through time to get the course of history back on track by kicking the shit out of these people that were supposed to be dead already.

There's also a side-questy area where you do most of your grinding for gear and special attacks.  The main bad thing is that you have to beat all of story mode (which gets difficult very quickly) before you get any additional character slots unlocked.  I have all these DBZ-style names for characters picked out but I can't use them until I finish the game with my Namekian (named Viola!).

MH4U:  Finished all 4 star quests, trying to beat the Urgent Mission for 5 stars.  Why thank you, I would like to be punched in the nuts some more game.

Puzzle & Dragons:  Kind of in a rut where the lower content is really easy but I'm in no way capable of beating Descends.  Mainly just need to grind and level a lot.

Pokémon Shuffle:  Free puzzle game, it's not great but the music is actually pretty awesome!

I wasn't 100% sure about 3-2's killer right away (more like 95%) and for 3-3 I expected the whole time that Evil Phoenix Wright was part of something bigger, or that he was someone else in disguise. Especially since that case had a bunch of seemingly minor characters.

It was odd to have the intro cutscene of the second case reveal the villain, since IIRC this usually only happens with the first case in each case? Redd White's an exception, but the intro cutscene didn't spoil the fact that he had an accomplice.

Anyway I quite liked Robin and Hugh as subversions of Apollo / Edgeworth.

All the pieces are on top of pillars and you have 30 seconds to do panther-run double jumps between them. Once miss and you have to wait out the timer and start over.

Anyway, finished the game. The Space Harrier section is way better than the first game's, although that may be because I turned it into a Star Fox section instead. Final boss was....definitely a Bayonetta 2 boss, meaning pretty as all hell, hilariously over the top and generally fun, but also frustrating because things tend to get so chaotic that it's impossible to tell where the windup for an attack starts and the actual attack begins. Plot stuff was surprisingly satisfying and ties into the first game well enough. On balance the game is still a cut above Bayonetta but I do remember it being a lot easier to get into the flow of a big fight in the first one. Maybe I'll replay it! It is sitting right there, after all.

On the other hand, there are Witch Trials. Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Yeah, Bayonetta is ridiculous and insane, and only gets more insane, but the more you play it, the more you get use to it.   Still doesn't justify the Space Harrier section in the first game.

And no, it's not just the Star Fox aspect in Bayo 2 (which I still need to try at some point); the main mode it's still better.  Particularly because the game doesn't spin the camera around when you do a dodge, so no getting dizzy, controls are more intuitive and less sensitive (while still being fully responsive), and they give you a Melee option which is a move that sacrifices range in favor of hitting a larger AoE naturally, which comes in handy multiple times.  Add this to a much shorter sequence and we have a pretty tolerable if still pointless, gimmick sequence.

Also not tied to the best fight in the game.  Bayo 1's, on top of being the worst thing ever, you have to go through it every time you want to fight Jeanne 4, which is my favorite boss fight in the game and it annoys me to no end that they didn't just make it two different chapters (and it's not a Halo abuse thing either; Pope Vader gives you more Halos and is his own chapter.)

Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies: Main game completed. I always forget that the writing in PW games is enjoyable somehow. Good game! Did a good job of feeling like a long absent return. Not a ton to say about it. New gimmicks are all well used, new cast is solid, etc.

Blackquill exceeded expectations and was a fantastic prosecutor. Athena and Apollo both worked well. It was great to see some old faces too.

Case logic felt a little shakier than normal, but it has been a while since I played PW3, so it is probably actually about the same. The game required way less insane leaps of logic IMO, though, minus the "show us the photo as evidence of a random thing" things. Only got game overs in case 1 (<_<) and case 2. Otherwise no FAQing or anything.

Will be doing the DLC case too, since everyone recommended it.

X-Com: The Board Game: "Easy." We completed one mission before our base exploded and everyone panicked. Absolute comedy of errors, largely caused by the dice becoming the world's most disagreeable things.

Mansions of Madness: Call of the Wild: Oh wow. This is actually a substantial improvement over the base game it seems. While MoM was an interesting experiment, it left our group cold due to a lot of problems (set-up being really long, balance issues, incredibly linear scenarios that often left multiple players with little to do, and limited replayability despite designer attempts). Call of the Wild seems to effectively address all those complaints. Will hacve to play more and see how it goes.

X-COM the Boardgame - we beat Easy this weekend.  I was Commander and Central Officer.  That agitated me a bit too much.  Multiple instances where tasks expired on me because Done didn't register who I tapped at it.  Probably should take ipad out of case when playing.  We won anyway.  Misdirection mission type a bit more friendly than Domination.

Only some minor cheating.

Pathfinder card game - got three people playing this instead of two and it was a bit more fun.  Knowing the rule made things flow pretty well. 

The death rules can suck a big fat one though.  Rerolling a toon if you die you are supposed replay all the campaigns if you want to "catch up" and get rewards.  Fuck that shit.  We will probably follow rules on deck building for them, but that ain't happening for level ups and shit.

Also we failed at following the rules for basic deck building, but oh well.  The suggested decks also cheats by accident so I will accept us doing so.  Finished the Bas set Adventure and will think about doing the Sdventure path sometime.  Will definitely buy the rest of the set just out of completion sake.  I could sit in a room and play by myself if I really wanted.

Would be pretty fun a a computer game.

Ahahahaha.

So that bit now makes sense, needless to say (although I was still right about every protagonist so far being, if not actual royalty, then aspiring/failed royalty). Put R-man on hold after the second stratum to grind through NG+ Thage just so I didn't have that hanging over me. Killing Doom Shade as the ending unlock requirement is pretty dumb considering he says the same things whether you kill him or not (and geez there's a map I'm happy not to ever see again). The final boss actually could've been a little scary with Thage since breaking the barrier requires special attack usage? Thage being a squishy mage who is immune to healing and whose special attack is a melee move, not promising putting her right in front of FINAL BOSS POWER. If the boss was smart he could really ruin your day when you move in to break his protection (because MC death = game over here). Fortunately, the boss is not smart and decided that since he still had spells in stock he should damn well use them on someone across the room.

AI in Eternal Poison seems to do this all the time, like if enemies have any spells at all remaining then they're scripted to use them up before resorting to melee. This can result in some really stupid stuff like Unseelies constantly alternating between casting their defense/regen buffs because they can't have both active at once (a new physical or mental status will always overwrite an existing physical or mental status) from the start of the fight until they're all out of spells. It's pretty good about optimizing its damage output against your party, but this too is something you can use against the game once you figure it out. See above with the final boss prioritizing its spells against a random merc purely because he has no MDEF to reduce the damage (whereas sensibly punching the MC instead might result in a smaller damage figure but could also genuinely produce a crisis situation). Also any time you want to lure an enemy into a combo, just put the two characters you want to set it off perpendicular to one another, with them facing forward the same direction. Because striking an opponent from the side or rear gives a damage bonus, the computer will always obligingly march right in between your characters to hit the one with the exposed flank (allowing you to then do the same to the enemy, except super combo powered).

Pretty neat game in general, but yeah, not the sharpest AI I've ever seen.

Touhou Labyrinths: Wound up beating the final boss after all. Looking for something mindless to do during dinner last night, decided to go grind for levels. Honestly not too bad (insofar as grinding can ever be "not bad"), at least at proper endgame, because the top floor randoms are all just one enemy at a time dropping stupid amounts of experience and Money (that is actually the currency in this game: "Money.") Vicinity of forty levels over what the game recommended and still barely pulled through. Party was: Meiling, Remilia, Sakuya, Wriggle, Momiji, Kasen, Yuugi, Utsuho, Reimu, Sanae, Reisen, Alice. (Despite having 3/4 of the SDM team present, I forgot to give any of them the team bonus skill. Stupid oversight.)

This was not an ideal party. Wriggle I guess chipped in by getting poison to hit a couple times but this was really a drop in the bucket given stupid huge final boss HP pool, and her raw offense sure wasn't adding much. Reisen could've/should've contributed the valuable service of counteracting the boss's buffs, but she died almost immediately. Alice contributed nothing whatsoever (note this isn't generally true, she's useful against randoms). Momiji/Yuugi should've added more since they're usually powerhouse melee fighters, but somehow couldn't here; just having the same base attack power as Remilia doesn't mean you can deal damage like Remilia, because git gungnir scrubs. As usual Remilia probably accounted for more than half the party's damage output. Remilia is crazy fucking broke. Kasen sorta able to keep up just for having the right element to hit weakness at least. Otherwise, Sakuya spams haste (she wasn't capable of dealing damage even after powerlevelling), Reimu/Sanae buff and heal, Meiling is a roadblock. Utsuho brought ITD, which is nice in theory except the boss resists the element. Still, damage cut to like a quarter or whatever is still more than some people can do (because it is a number bigger than zero) and wound up making a big difference at the last minute after everyone more important got ID'd.

Oh yeah, boss likes spamming ID. It's tied to his favorite MT tech that can also straight up murder some people through raw damage if the numbers go too swingy (bye Reisen). The status odds are not high, but this is still a huge problem when it's a persistent threat over the duration of an absurdly long fight. He also likes having multiple power-up stages that full-heal him. And buffing DEF/MDF 100% because lol you thought grinding out thirty levels would let you reliably deal damage again, sucker. Then because I had no one who could counteract enemy buffs I just had to turtle them out and hope nobody got ID'd while waiting. Same dilemma for taking time to recharge MP after every time the boss decides to wipe everyone's MP stores to zero (fuck you). At some point he summoned support dudes who had too much DEF for anyone to deal damage but fuck you, that's what I have ITD for. And at low health he thinks it's cool to break out the parasitic healing (god there are way too many awful gimmicks crammed into this one fight). When victory happened it was pretty much at the last possible second, 2/3 of the party dead, tank/damage battery/dedicated healer all gone, percolations resource exhaustion imminent, boss about to get a turn and probably frag the few battered survivors.

Normally that kind of victory is pretty satisfying, but not so much when you had to grind for an hour just to make that much feasible. For any postgame content I will just assume recommended boss level should be read as 50% higher than actually displayed because I don't know what they were thinking suggesting this fight was remotely possible any lower than I was.

Oh yeah, there is postgame, of course. I don't know how much of this I'll bother with. I found a boss rush and got the Great Question's mask for it because referential game is referential. There is a ton of extra dungeon out there but the randoms are obscenely obnoxious (and like 1/3 as rewarding as the easy ones on the top floor). Killed a few of the scrubbier optional bosses but most obviously well out of my league. I did finally get the capacity to assign sub-classes to everyone in the cast, at least. These are pretty neat; the extra offensive techs they open up generally don't seem too special, but the passive skills synergize with existing skillsets in some pretty nice ways, like making Orin the infinite MP factory.

I'm not sure -anyone- is ready for the levels of crazy in Bayonetta, and I can't really decide whether I'm in love with its sheer audacity or flabbergasted by the overwhelming male gaze. I'll admit I'm liking the design a lot so far, though.

Played through a great retro platformer called Castle in the Darkness.  Top notch game, and only sixbux on Steam.  Controls are simple, responsive, and fast - you jump quick and sink like a stone, you start and stop on a dime.  Loads of secrets.  The platforming and level-traversing will take skill and smarts.  Also a game where Spikes are a common feature.  Difficult, but very little in the way of bullshit (minus a couple choice falling spikes).  Setting is a great impression of a simple early SNES game.  Music and sound effects are great.  If you like tricky platformers, you really owe it to yourself to check it out.

I'm not sure -anyone- is ready for the levels of crazy in Bayonetta, and I can't really decide whether I'm in love with its sheer audacity or flabbergasted by the overwhelming male gaze. I'll admit I'm liking the design a lot so far, though.

So what I'm getting is you thought people were exaggerating about the nonsense we were referring too <_<?

Kirby Nightmare in Dreamland: Extra Mode beat and 100%ed; about the same as Kirby Adventure, though the Lion Mini Boss is really stupid in this game because if he contacts you, he grabs you and OH CRAP, can't use his weapon against him, and he's much bigger in this game.  Meta Knight, by contrast, was a lot easier, probably because he no longer has large moments of flinch immunity, which is what made him tough in KA Extra Mode (hard to slug fest when he can kill you in 3 hits and you can get one hit per pass after all)

Kirby Triple Deluxe:  HA! TAKE THAT SOUL OF SECTONI-...*AFTER form appears* ...:(

True Arena is a cruel, cruel thing.  At least I feel like I'm learning the bosses and how to dodge them...except Flowery Woods seems to be really hard to figure out.  I have learned that the pro-est strategy is Archer until Dark Meta Knight's Revenge, then go with Normal Kirby from here.  If STone appears for either Dark Meta Knight's Revenge or Soul of Sectonia, USE IT.  The invincibility you get from it is absolutely invaluable.

Ni No Kuni: We bit a big fat ass, then saw a lot of plot, then beat the fat ass again only this time with Oliver using a super spell.  I have to admit, the game actually managed to put Oliver, a 10 year old boy, into a legitimate "bad ass hero in front of sun set" pose and make it WORK. 

I suspect I'm reaching the end game arc seeing as the BIG PLOT TWIST was revealed, and we're about to fight the game's villain...who by the power of dramatic irony we know is really just the #2 guy to the real villain which the game has been showing us the entire time.  I guess I'll give the game props for pulling off the Ultimecia/Zemus style villain only making it clear from the prologue the villain was there, while giving a legitimate reason for the heroes to not recognize there's anyone beyond Shaddar.  Just a nice change of pace for the game to just be honest with the player while keeping facts hidden from the character's.

Thage's special attack is actually awesome as hell considering it's 1 range on Thage (100% Fear is awesome). Probably not so awesome against a boss, but once I got it, I probably used it in every battle.

At first I was worried someone had replaced Snow with a sinister robot because against all expectation he appeared to be taken aback by the raw crazy that saturates every second of Bayonetta instead of reveling in it, but I guess on second thought he was probably just surprised about the game actually being pretty difficult?

Fun fact: the number 2 villain was the only villain in the original release of the game.  All those cutscenes about the real villain are basically dlc added in the ps3 version.  At least too me, the story in the second villain's part of the game feels super disconnected from the rest, so if you end up feeling the same, there's your reason.
