I particularly appreciate what the game does with the bullet hell dodge sequences. Lots of good ideas. earthbound is the best source of inspiration for new indie RPGs.

The only thing that bothers me is how the nice / not nice thing seems like a non choice, if you're just going to kill everything then what the fuck is the point of playing this rpg in particular. Also, enjoy golf qtes. Killing seems to me like a nice novelty you check on on your second playthrough more than a real choice.

So you are saying it takes the ideas Nier fucked up and makes an actually good game?

You stop your NieR badmouthing.

FFRK: crafted Meteor, immediately put it on Tellah, but he won't die no matter how many times I make him cast it. Sad face.
Also, dear god Magic. I'm glad you have money to spare and seem to be enjoying the game, but that is a lot of money on a F2P game. I usually just buy the biweekly dollar pulls to support the game because I actually like the game and feel it's worth a dollar every now and then but... $260 in one go might be indicative of a problem...

Undertale definitely has Nier-like elements but I forget what you didn't like about it so I can't comment on that aspect.

Yeah seriously. At least I just obsessively compulsively play it all day, and this weekend proved that is something I can not do if I have a good enough reason.

And seriously you guys if you have money to spend on FFRK you REALLY should be spending it on Undertale instead. I linked to the demo a while ago in misc links.  If you are unconvinced (and the fact that Fenrir played it should convince you you heathens), go give the demo a shot.

Yeeeeah...  I already touched on that in chat earlier, and chatted with Jim about it a little bit.

EDIT: Right, may as well talk about the other games I've been playing.

FFD: Played for a few hours in my downtime at work.  Just got the Ranger job and then switched to the Light side again.

Light: No JP Spent, but mostly rank 3 in all the jobs except Dragoon.
Nacht: Rank 3 Red Mage for HP +20%, Rank 7 for Thief.  Not sure what to do next.
Alba: Rank 3 White Mage, Rank 7 Black Mage, Rank 4 Red Mage.  Going to get Chaincast then throw her back into Black Mage.
Diana: Same as Alba, but switch White Mage and Black Mage.
Glaive: Rank 3 Knight, and then Rank 7 or 8 Monk.

Excellent, superior mobile FF.

Star Ocean 3 - Robinwind died in a single Scatter Beam combo, just like my first playthrough.
Celestian Tales: Old North - Working on a second point of view. Flying by.

I'm actually kinda tempted by Undertale but Earthbound humour + artstyle both really don't do it for me. (Though of course, I did like Nier, if that's the second comparison.) A good look at violence vs. pacifism is really intriguing, however. Still worth it, you think, Gourry?

FFRK: Ditched my two best characters for Golbez and Thancred. This game is so weird. Sometimes ditching your BEST dudes is the best decision. Weird. eerie.

Party is Golbez, Josef, Rinoa, Cloud, Thancred.

Seconding potential interest with misgivings. It is really difficult for me to want to spend extensive time in a world where the art style doesn't jibe with me.

The game looks actually pretty good when you play it. You'd like Toriel and her house.

I don't like how the main character looks, I think this emulates Earthbound's weird MC sprites. The game shows its limited budget with the static sprites and drab environments, but the overall art is pleasant enough (unlike say, Lisa's)

The Papyrus battle was the coolest part of the game so far, it cannot possibly get better

Papyrus is a great character but it gets better. I didn't talk about combat much, but the game really does cool and creative things with its bullet hell stuff, messing around with the menu interface, your movement abilities, and using character personality to inform their mode of attack.

The artstyle on the overworld is really minimalist but as I mentioned, there's a lot going on with regard to battle sprites and facial expressions for important characters. It doesn't look always great but I think the artstyle is inoffensive at worst and it also uses its aesthetic in a subversive way.

As I mentioned, there are similarities to Earthbound, but it doesn't totally share its sense of humor. The things that come up that are strange/quirky are completely in service to character/world building, whereas I feel that Earthbound had some random things that weren't in service of anything. There is some 4th wall breaking if that bothers you, but a lot of the humor consists of puns and lampshade hanging on game/RPG tropes, and it's not at all obnoxious about it. Humor is hard to gauge from person to person, but I think the strength of the game is in its emotional resonance and sincerity more than its humor style.

I think you guys can try the demo, but if I'm right, that's just the opening. It's really good, but the tenor of the rest of the game is a little different.

D3: Enemy drops hate me, got nothing useful from them all week except some new looks I can switch my good equipment into. Kadala and the Cube love me though. Buying armor pieces with blood shards got me Uliana's boots (four pieces down!), Inma's gloves (again, four pieces down), and the Raiment Of A Thousand Storms gloves (one piece, would not complain about a second for that 300% damage boost on punching). Then I went to the cube to upgrade fist weapons, and what should show up but that Shenlong's Relentless Assault I narrowly missed before. Granted, the stats on it suck, but I can fix that!

Final Fantasy Autobattle Will Tear Us Apart - Farming for gil, mostly. I already have well over 100 Lightning, Wind and Power Orbs, which should be plenty to get the incoming Dual Delay to R4 at minimum, and that'll be pretty helpful for the also incoming bonus battles of the FF14 event. Hopefully, I'll be able to rip Ifrit into tiny ribbons with that Keep of the Saints and Lominsan Bow. The extra Growth Eggs from the initial event quests will also go straight to Zack, since he's a requirement on most of the relevant masteries in his event. It shouldn't be hard anyway, I'm pretty set for FF7 synergy (Diamond Pin, a 4+* Masamune Blade, an Edincoat, an Adamant Bangle. Those should keep things very simple). It's good to be back into a steady influx of stuff to do, and there also should be a Dungeon Update next week at the latest.

Final Fantasy 7 - Currently up to North Corel. When I was a kid, I used to grind all the way to L30 on Mythril Cave to have the HP to pick up Beta and farm Ethers from Ark Dragons. Surprise, surprise, all of those are utterly unnecessary. I'm not even L20 right now and I just got Fire 2. The other L2s should follow up shortly. Enemies continue to hilariously suck - you're seriously telling me that there are enemies who still deal 20 damage AT THIS POINT OF THE GAME. I really don't know what were the devs thinking with the damage scaling there. Sometimes, things ST 4HKO when they're lucky! Heck, Jenova BIRTH has a MT 4HKO! Too bad the game hands you powerful MT healing basically for free, and I'm obviously not talking about Aerith's Healing Wind. The balance is seriously out of whack.

Narratively, the game continues to be an odd mess of interesting ideas and wildly fluctuating execution. The tone set for FF7 is often schizophrenic, which gets magnified by the polygonal models.

Yeah, the Demo is just up until you reach Toriel's house and the subsequent boss fight.

It... actually, y'know, nevermind. I don't know how what I found so fucking amazing about the tutorial plays out in the full game because I haven't been reading the spoilers. The pacifism option and bullet hell combat are hella cool but those things aren't the most interesting thing about the tutorial by a longshot.

---

Final Fantasy Autobattle Me All Your Money Holmes - Farm Farm. Got the three FFX level crystals, should be able to get Yuna's Level Break 2 crystal before the event ends mostly thanks to the stupidly good Happy Parade event going on. Going to dump a lot of mythril into stamina recharges during the Black/Fire/Ice Orb 3-day fest for sure, since the possibility of R4 Waterja is very real. Farming a bit of the Wind/Non-Elemental/Strength orb fest but I'm way less excited about that than literally any of the other fests except for the equipment upgrade fest. Earth Orb Day will probably get me R3 Quake, R2 Protectga, and then I can probably stop caring about Earth Orbs for the time being. I have so much Gil I don't know what to do with it, and both Yuna and Gilgamesh just broke the first level cap. Even with a 4 day break progress is kinda ridiculous right now.

Used some summons with Yuna while farming. Jesus christ they are awful. Like, yeah, their gimmick is that they're MT but they're never worth using over, say, Quake, or even the equivalent rarity MT black spells like Raincall or Fireball. Why the hell are they all 1 charge and such low damage? Being MT isn't a good reason for that when you have shit like Quake (which, admittedly, ate up a lot of Dark/Earth orbs).

Summons are mostly a QoL thing and, once you hit up the 4* content, they actually have legit offense (from -ja level to higher), along with being your only non-5* source of -ja-level non-elemental damage. The 3* summons have slightly lower mults than Quake and Ruinga. The only 2* ever worth using is Kirin. And no 1* summon is ever worth touching.

Gourry I appreciate it but I'm sure it cannot get better. Papyrus + Music + Blue attack joke thing + cool gameplay change / challenge + long jump at the end + Bone attacks + Special attack. It was awesome.

Anyway I just got past Undyne.

Zenny: I use R2 Valefor and it is allright.

You actually notice Quake being weaker at one point. Enemies start barely surviving Quake, while Valefor just straight up murders stuff.

In the 1337 difficulty dungeons I like having one guy with Valefor and another with Quake, both having refill materias + one second ability with a high number of charges for the boss fight.

Otherwise, Maduin = Valefor with other requirements, Carbuncle is cool, Kirin is niche as fuck and overall bad, and all other summons are absolute garbage

Guess not!
But right now the game keeps telling me I'm close to the end.

BTW, I won the defusing game on the first try, and it kind of sounded like I was not supposed to. Is there any way to legit actually complete the (awesome) colored blocks puzzle right after?

I did the defusing thing first try too. There is a way to do the colored block puzzle but it's also easy to make it impossible if you step on the wrong block toward the beginning.

There's still another little bit but you're close to the end.

Woah there's a solution gif already? Cool.
Does anything actually happen if you complete it that way, or is the ending pretty much the same as during the defusing part?

It's on steam only?

A quick glance says that Undertale is PC/Mac only, so probably just steam unless it maybe hit GOG.  Most Steam games do allow for controllers, HOWEVER depending on what Undertale was built in it may not recognize most generic PC controllers.  Depending on how complex the keyboard layout is you can probably just use a joy-to-key program to get around that though.
