Composer Battle Is Go! THE TREBLE CLEF IS YOUR DOOM!
« on: March 25, 2008, 12:38:06 AM »
There are many theories on the nature of the afterlife (if indeed such a thing exists). Many of them posit the existence of a perfect and paradisaical realm to which consciousness ascends after shuffling off the mortal coil. While such a concept is difficult to prove by any non-terminal means, just suppose, for the sake of argument, that such a place exists. There may just be a little corner of it, somewhere up there in the aether, in which composers of the second millenium A.D. convene to compare, collaborate, and contradict one another, as such people are wont to do.

For a while things would probably be alright. It's in the nature of art of any kind that the established leaders of any generation will have some stylistic objections to the trends of the next generation, sure. Nevertheless, conventional wisdom generally ran thusly: "We're (mostly) sane people here and sooner or later we'll just have to accept each other's differences, right?" Not without a considerable amount of grumbling, of course, because you can't stop some people from complaining even in paradise, but for the most part the centuries passed without undue violence to or from the occasional new arrivals.

And then, with the end of the millenium, there arose...a disturbance. A cold, cacaphonous style which sought to claim that anything, ANYTHING, random noise, an audience coughing, should be considered "music."

One by one, the conventional elements were abandoned--melody, harmony, rhythm, until the sound that assaulted one and all seemed akin to that of a toddler banging on the keys of a piano, and this set the inhabitants of Composer's Heaven quite into disarray. "'Atonal music?' How can there be such a thing? The very phrase is a contradiction in terms! Avant-garde nonsense, the lot of it. Minimalism? Pfah! A sad label for the creatively bankrupt." Nevertheless, it was an incontrovertible fact that someone in their midst was writing it, and it was only getting louder as new voices added to the broken choir. This led each and every one of the composers to the same horrifying conclusion:

It would only be a matter of time before they were beset by Philip Glass.

If they are to avoid this sorry fate, they must work together. Analysis of each individual's work will no doubt reveal the tell-tale slips that declare the guilty to be amongst the ranks of the dread serialists! Querelous though they might be, this stark realization unified the composers as nothing before. If there's one thing they can all agree on, it's that this postmodern cacaphony should be sent back to the hell that spawned it: the twentieth century!

Admittedly there's not much you can do to hurt someone who's already dead...not physically, at least. However, forcible emigration to the realm of washed up country musicians should teach
anyone the error of their ways. It may take them a lifetime or two but, well, they DO have eternity.

Mod's note: A nameclaim should not be taken as proof of guilt or innocence. All non-Town players have safe cover identities.

Also mod's note: The flavor text of this game will feature the Cid at his geekiest. You have been warned.

Also also mod's note: And no, contrary to the gospel of Pratchett, Heaven did not just get Elgar and Liszt. This is no kind of clue; neither composer makes an appearance in this game. That is all, play nice kiddies, etc.

Rules:

- No editing your posts.
- No talking outside the thread unless your role specifically states that you may.
- No posting during game nights.
- No spectator posts. Period.
- Don't directly quote your role PM.
- PLAY TO WIN.
- There may or may not be third parties with seperate win conditions from scum or town.
- There will be no extensions.
- LYLO will be announced.
- There are roles in this game, but this is a closed setup.
- There may or may not be 'scripted sequences' of events that change the rules of the game and things like that.
- If there is a deadlock at the deadline, the day will end without a lynch.
- Days will last 72 hours.

Hildegarde von Bingen here. I'm the female composer in this lot, and most certainly am great because of it. Nevermind my alter-ego "Ryogo" being a male. I'm just his guardian angel for all things musical, and I've got an awesome set of pipes to boot. My voice shall reign louder than all! Bwahahaha.

According to Wikipedia, I wrote a document about the female orgasm too. I'm just that awesome.

I was wondering what the flavor text of this game would be...

What? Oh. Um... #Vote: Excal. Scary person. Probably composed some TECHNO if you know what I mean. (By which I mean he composed techno)

Well now, interesting choice of words there Ryogo.  Did your flavor text indicate that you were the only female composer among us?  Although far from common, there were a nice number of them and to say you are the "one in this lot" is an odd choice of words.

Oh, and because it seems all the rage

A female? On the internet? El oh el.

Keeshi, metagaming already? That was fast! Don't forget that nameclaims aren't supposed to give us clues, as stated by the mod. Going after Ryogo's nameclaim might be a good idea in other circumstances, but here it's probably overzealous.

Silence isn't always bad! You have to have silence between movements... or are you advocating some kind of non-stop techno-remix beat crap? *glare* I certainly hope not!

So, we're talking about heaven and the afterlife? Heaven rhymes with seven. And Shale is number seven (on the list)! This is irrefutable logic!

I'm curious, why the claim so soon?  It tells us nothing, one way or the other, nor even really tripping anyone else up.  It just seems like an odd quirk to make your opening post.

For Excal:
Quote
Mod's note: A nameclaim should not be taken as proof of guilt or innocence. All non-Town players have safe cover identities.
I saw this, and figured it'd be alright to do. I just wanted to try and get into character, and I thought it'd be cool if everyone said who they were and what their composer did. And now I'm being pummeled with votes for it T_T Sorry for making a newb mistake, I guess.

And for Keeshi:
3) Yes, as far as I know, I'm the only female composer here. It's what was insinuated to me. I just thought it would be funny for everyone to see that since I'm actually a guy. No more, no less.

Why waste time?

I stand by this logic. Also, if the mod will confirm that names are unrelated to our in-game identities (affiliations, roles, etc), I wouldn't mind a full nameclaim, mainly because it would make an avatar fad possible.

zzz shale must be scum zzz omgus zzz wait no that's not the way, and besides I'm already voting for Ryogo.

Personally I don't care, like, at all about flavour or who peoples composers are or anything like that. Shale, the mod already confirmed that names don't matter in the opening post.

Also, quickest day 1 bandwagon or what? Not that I particularly care, with it being day 1 and day one being 72 whole hours and all that crap.

Also, EvilTom, I always seem to post ok when I play and I'm in your timezone. Whining about it rarely does anything good for your cause (regardless of which country you're posting from, really.)

Hiho~

Not hearing much of note so far.  Ryogo's early nameclaim isn't scummy to me.  Using it as a response to immediate pressure comes off as something of a mistake, yes, but we've been told that non-towns have cover identities, so in theory everyone could nameclaim right now if they wanted to and it would make no difference.  He pointedly did not include a roleclaim.

I'd like to know why Excal's laying on a third vote for this.  It does seem a natural response from a new player when the first two posts of the game are people voting him (her?)  More to the point, I'd like to know why Ryogo's attracting attention for being an unknown and Keeshi isn't at all.

##Vote: Excal for the time being.

Otter needs to not lurk this game.  Andrew, if the stuff in the signup thread holds, is limited to 1 post/day, which means whatever he does post needs to be well-thought and relevant.  Throwing those out as reminders.

##VOTE: Keeshi

I don't know you!  Good enough for now.

EDIT: Ninja'd by Alex.  Oh, and for the record, I'm personally not planning to be real forgiving regarding self-imposed posting limitations, from Andy or anyone else.  He's said he can only do the one post per day, and that's fine, I expect each one will be at least somewhat substantive (he wouldn't do a "lol just checking in" post, at the very least) but if it amounts to one decent post per day and everyone else is simply way ahead of him in content anyhow, I'm not going to ignore that.  Just getting that on the table; consistently going after posters low in content, whatever their reasons, has been one of the most effective strategies for finding scum.  May not be too relevant if we're moving slowly enough and not saying too much, but I definitely don't want to see that happen.

Nameclaims seem like they're fine.  Avatar fad would be fun, sure.

I was planning to bandwagon someone, anyone from the very start. Ryogo was good enough for me. Two votes on one guy is more likely to create an interesting start than two votes on two guys. Nothing really yet stands out in particular to me as scummy anyhow. Good as anything to leave it on him. The usual 'everyone votes for everyone else' web of argument doesn't usually help much, I like this more.

Officious as usual, Otter. I hope your posts, in general, contain more playing the game and less... talk about playing the game later on. Quite frankly, it's boring to read a lot of the time, so yeah. At least compact it a bit this time 'round.

Begging everyone to not roleplay this game. This isn't Post Restriction Mafia 2.

Ah, should have read that more closely. Okay, then, I officially call for an avatar fad because it would be amusing, and will change mine once I can think of a title.

Rat, I don't mean to roleplay. I just think it would be fun to suddenly have a dozen people avataring great composers of the modern and pre-modern ages.

Are you saying you like the pointless bantering of the joke phase, Alex?  I personally don't see the point, so third vote for a spurious, but fractionally real, cause to see if I can get something going.  After all, it's not like three votes this early is cause for alarm at day's end, but it should act as a nice spur to discussion.

Otter, I really have to ask.  You have a two liner consisting of basically copying Andy's post except with a different target.  And then you have a whole paragraph of dire sounding fluff in response to one sentence from Alex asking you not to lurk.  Are you suggesting that you would have given us absolutely nothing if Alex hadn't of pre-emptively remembered your existence?

Ryogo, don't sweat it too much.  We need to jump on the small stuff in order to get bigger better stuff to jump on.  Besides, day 1 is the day of someone's gonna get lynched for a really poor reason.  All you can really do is hope that your small screwup isn't the one that's gonna catch everyone's fancy.  And if it is, well, do what you can to leave something in your final words for the people who're gonna be continuing the job after you're gone.

Uggg. I really hope I don't get lynched first because of that. Its my first game, and I get taken out because of it? That would suck.

And to comment on your post about my nameclaim post being really awkward, Excal. I started the post before anyone else had posted, and forgot about it when my girlfriend called. After, I finished it up, I clicked post. It said "Others have posted since you started", but I didn't even think and just clicked post again anyways. Then I read them, and noticed I had already been voted twice. I also thought they were joke votes, and not that I was getting "band-wagoned". I had forgotten I couldn't edit afterwards, and didn't know if I could double post or not, so I waited for someone else to post before I did so again.

Like I said, I'm a newb. If you're going to give me the boot, please think it through. Or at least give time to pin blame on someone else more scummy than me. We still have over 68 hours until the day is done. XP

Ryogo, you're still four votes away from hammer.  And oddly enough, even if those four votes were sitting in my back pocket, I've somehow refrained from using them.

No, you're more use to me as a conversation starter.  Both on the merits for lynching you (I'm sure there must be some!) or the merits for lynching me for so heartlessly tossing you up to three votes.  Though...  honestly, Alex seemed to be the only one phased by the fact that I tried to place a semi-serious first vote on you.  I'm fine with Alex for his response, Ryogo seems a touch concerned over his own well being, but I'll chalk that up to his wanting to actually play in his first game.

But, Rat, Shale, Otter and Sopko.  Why'd you guys all blithly sail by that with nary a mention?  It seems a curious thing to pass by with either nothing, or a ho hum noting that we've got a really quick three-vote going here.  In fact, the more I think on it, the more that disturbs me.

Two votes usually doesn't get me raised up in a game this size. Your third vote raises eyebrows, but it's as good a reason as any to start serious discussion. I have harangued Smodge and Corwin previously to start posting, so...

Excal, Ryogo did something decidedly odd. This early in the game, what else is there to vote on? If people started actively calling for his head instead of pressuring him, it'd be different, but that's not what's going on.

Taking constructive criticism into account, I will endeavor to be more concise.

Why didn't I comment on the three votes?  It's seven to hammer and it's never too early to start something, so I had no problem with it at all.  We've already had results.

Quote from: Excal
All you can really do is hope that your small screwup isn't the one that's gonna catch everyone's fancy.

What exactly was his "small screwup" originally?  I think the rules made it clear that the names are meaningless.  He hasn't done a thing wrong that I can see.

Quote from: Ryogo
Uggg. I really hope I don't get lynched first because of that. Its my first game, and I get taken out because of it? That would suck.

On the other hand, since then Ryogo's been really quick to drag out the "sorry guys I'm a newb" defense, which doesn't look good at all.  I think most of us had a pretty good idea about how new you were already; trumpeting the fact for sympathy is never a good move.  That said, you are new, so no need to apologize and spend even more time on the subject.  Talk about other people instead!  Fixating on yourself usually doesn't produce much content.  As you say, the day just started, and taking an early lead for a stupid reason doesn't mean your back is to the wall.

Quote from: Shale

Which was, again?  I don't understand why everyone is acting weird about the meaningless name claim.  Maybe I'm just confused and there's really something wrong with it?  If so, please, tell me.  I was going to chip in mine just for the hell of it, but I'll wait to hear if someone has a real objection first I guess.
