So I'm now a zookeeper in the Labyrinth of Tigers, where I get to feed all the exotic animals.  Like this guy.

"Where, exactly, did they get this owl?

The oldest keeper gives you the seven keys to the door. The others retreat to their tea room. One crosses herself. Another points and laughs at you.

The Owl's lair is a dank, quiet place which puts you in mind of a long-unfashionable church. Echoes stalk you between the pillars. At the far end, a simple table like an altar bears a lacquered wooden box the size of your head.

And inside the box, a great sleek horned Owl. It twitches a wing and regards you calmly. You lift it out of the box: its feathers are comfortingly warm. It splits and hinges open in your hands, neatly as a music-box. The cavity within writhes with - what? luminous maggots? Pulsing eggs? The grinding rhythm of the things drags your mouth open: secrets spool from your mind, drawn through your mouth like thread onto a bobbin. The thing winds out your store of secrets in seconds, and begins unhurriedly to feast on your other memories: matters even you'd forgotten, shames that - enough!

You snap the owl shut, stuff it back inside its box and flee. The owl-mausoleum lies as still as dusk behind you."

Twilkitri: Later DQ dungeons skip the torches, but just reveal semi-random sections at once.  Are you playing the mobile phone versions?  They might have changed it there since I imagine you'd have an even closer-in view which would make it easier to get lost.  It's normally not TOO bad, just too big, and "secrets" are often hidden via randomly hiding some section and letting you bump into the part you can't get to from various angles until you find the way that works.

You're supposed to use the Princess reward to find the mark, yes.  Also, the world of DQ is one where "being the descendent of Erdick" and being enough of a badass to survive the marshes and dig this up are one-and-the-same.  Anybody badass enough to pick up random pieces of treasure hidden over the island obviously merits getting cool magic artifacts, and any such person obviously must be a descendent of a great line of heroes as well.  Note that the DQ series has extremely rare human, non-monstrous enemies you actually fight - DQ8 Marcello's like the only one (maybe some random thieves in caves in DQ3).  This isn't a world where anybody can level up and be an evil mook and collect treasure, it's just you & the monster hordes.

Did this version of DQ change the initiative rules?  In the NES version, unless I'm totally crazy, initiative is only rolled once: at the beginning of the fight.  There's strict turn alteration afterward, so Dragonlord will never double-turn you ever, just maybe get the drop on you at the start of the fight.

The mobile phone version, yes. Turn order was definitely fluid within individual battles.

A test battle against Dragon Dragonlord, based on my proper save as the autosave was in the post-Dragonlord segment so at level 17, had me go first in 6 of 16 rounds, and Dragonlord go first in the other 10.

Zestiria: lets see here...
1 little girl and her dog dying very emotionally
4 kids turned to banditry and slaughtered.
3 little kids turned to stone permanently.
1 infant literally sacrificed on an alter with a knife to the chest.
This is not all inclusive by any means.

For bonus points: the party hid the body of the first little girl and didn't tell the mom what happened to her daughter (no discussion of this choice).

But hey there are lits of cool puns and character interaction in the bestiary! Hope they keep that going in future tales games that are done by different writers.

Otherwise the Graces combat system is always cool, and the music is good. Horrible no good skill system that deserves its own special rant though.

Bravely Default: Jim reminded me that I was playing this long, long ago, but got stalled out when I couldn't beat Behemoth at the end of chapter 3. He also kindly informed me that the L4 Ninja ability completely breaks purely physical enemies like Behemoth, so guess what I'm playing again! Beat that damn purple monster and also did the Swordmaster quest, and on to Chapter 4.

Super Mario 3D Land: Also started this up after buying a copy while visiting Pyro, and cleared out the first three worlds. It's very fun! I didn't realize how much 3D World was building on it.

Bravely Second - Done with the prologue. Plot is already headed to very dumb places, but the gameplay remains great. The jobs could've started pouring down a bit faster, but they're pretty promising already. The idea behind Wizard is really neat, for instance, and Charioteer is better than you'd think from the job description. Figures!

UPDATE: Silver Wolf/3X Mandragora random teams are even more annoying than the boss I was stuck on for 18 months. Yay, turning off encounters!

Yeah those enemies can certainly both be pretty annoying (Earthing Rods are good if you have any, they're a trip to Florem if you don't). You may not be on the Eternia map long enough to need to worry, but be warned that IMO at least the randoms don't get any easier in the next area, and you do probably want to figure out ways to get resources from them (although... ninja cheese will deal with a bunch of upcoming bosses...).

Having said that I couldn't have said anything about all these randoms until I did my challenge run a few months ago, because on my normal playthrough I was gleefully Crescent Mooning them all into oblivion.

Zestiria: You know the game is overusing child deaths when you are at endgame and you walk to an alley in the first town, see a crowd of people, and actually honest to god laugh out loud when they are like "We found the body of a child, it was pretty gruesome. Oh it was that kid you thought you saved earlier in the game. And all his friends are dead too."

Let's see what else we got for kid deaths since last time:
- In a separate incident, a kid you saved earlier (a survivor from an earlier kid-slaughter) is killed right in front of the party at the end of a quest to find out who murdered his friends. OTL.
- An optional boss rants about how all the children were killed by disease in her town.
- Another similar optional boss had her kid killed and turned monster.
- The big-bad's extended family had all the chidren die because of a curse.
- The big bad had a kid that was born a monster because of a curse. Cue (yet another case of) infanticide.
- Still not an exhaustive list.

Tales writers have never been good, but Zestiria takes the cake for being godawful. Although in fairness I didn't play ToD2 or ToX2.

Skill system rant:
There are 50 'base' equipment skills in ToZ. They do things like "Attack +4%" or "Take 5% less damage while guarding" and so on and so forth. All weapons and armors come with 1 predetermined skill from this set of 50 and up 3 additional, random skills. The individual skills themselves don't tend to be too powerful, as the power is supposed to come from combining them. PC's have 5 pieces of equipment so in theory you can get up to 20 skills on a PC. By having skills in a row together or having multiples of the same skill (Doesn't matter which skill, having multiples gives you the same generic stack bonus), you get better effects like "Negate a status ailment" or "+1 combo in a chain". Sounds cool, except there are *50* skills and getting the right things by random chance is highly unlikely. And stores stock limited copies of equipment, and may not stock a piece of equipment at all as a shop is random and they take time to refresh inventory! Equipment is also key to stats so you can't play around with this too much using earlygame stuff.

But wait, there is a fusion system! All you have to do is take a piece of equipment that is a COPY of the one you have skills on, and fuse them for a price to combine there skills! Except if two skills are in the same slot (2nd/3rd/4th) on a piece of equipment, they combine to another random skill that requires battling with the equipment to even unlock. So if you have a cool new sword you want to use you can't fuse your existing skill setup for a sword onto it. No you'd need to get MORE copies of that cool new sword and hope they have the skills you'd want... Did I mention that shops don't stock multiple copies of equipment usually and that it takes time to refresh inventory, and that even then it's totally random in what you get?

Not to worry! The game helpfully gives you tips on how to grind specific randoms for equipment drops, raising odds from like 2% to 4% and so on! And by finding hidden midget seraphs in dungeons and stuff you can slightly boost the chance you'd get a specific skill on it!

Yeah Zestiria has a special kind of skill system. The kind that sucks.

That sounds suspiciously like ToZ was originally intended to be a f2p phone game...

Relatedly, Berseria looks really good and I am hyped for a legit female Tales lead and ToZ just makes me so worried it's gonna suck.

ToB is a ToZ prequel, so be prepared.

Tales writers have never been good, but Zestiria takes the cake for being godawful. Although in fairness I didn't play ToD2 or ToX2.

ToZ's writing is the worst thing ever since ToD2. I never thought Namco can be this bad, again.
ToZ runs in a totally wrapped up and have the main cast dance in some very hard to swallow hypocrisy. Ugh, I have not feel so pissed off since the ToD2 days. I should mention I am feeling this way despite the game ships Sorey and Mikleo like a married couple from the beginning to the end.

Also, you forget to mention about lining up the skills, which makes the skill system even more rage inducing.
The game is such a piece of crap that I truly hope something really bad happens to Namco so they'll learn their lesson. No, the ToZ fan out-rage is not enough.

PXZ2

Wasn't expecting things to all get tied up as rapidly as they are.  Then again, I suppose only two plots were actually kinda serious, and they're wrapping up on schedule, so maybe I should have been expecting it to rush to an end this quickly.  Currently on Chapter 40, and I think I'm back to the first stage of CxN for the Shinra/Ouma showdown.  Expecting the last chapter to actually be Lv41 and ending levels will be probably around 35/36.

May try and gather my thoughts on everyone when I'm done.  Something I certainly couldn't do with PXZ1 since you simply don't care about the differences, or even really notice.  That said, I'm not sure how many of these people are actually different enough to make the project worthwhile.  Maybe if I toss on plot/character thoughts as well as gameplay?

On another note.  Has there actually been a Street Fighter stage yet?  I mean, Seth, Bison, and Juri are all pretty major characters in the games, but I don't think they've gotten any stages.  Kinda odd, since I recall the SF games having pretty distinctive stages.

I enjoyed ToX2 more then the first due to the characters being a little more fun. Ludger was a forgettable MC, but he was fun to play as. Also, Gaius didn't know how to use a fun and had an old  school tales main feel to his moveset. Also he looked wicked sweet yo!

That said, ToZ has been a slog, best way to put it. The skill and equipment system stinks and they have somehow made the graces battle system not as fun. I don't like getting g stronger by fusing a character in my active party, here's a thought...use someone on the bench!

Story and characters are bland. I'm just trying to get through this game and I'm hoping ToB is a sequel in name alone. Please don't copy anything this first did. It all sucked. Easily my least favorite tales game?

*thinks*

Hmmm yeah. I enjoyed hearts and legendia more. X1 is replayable. And uh...I liked the others I played.

For shame tales.

BD: Got to the end of the Earth Temple, turned around and went back to grind moar and do the Vampire sidequest. Found the ice dragon, and by entirely unrelated circumstance my whole party died horribly. Okay; grinding, then keystones.

Shake tiny text if. You want cheese spoiler.

The breath is physical.  If you don't mind wonky JP gains you can have a ninja solo them.

More for Campire castle as well.
yeah it works for the boss there too

If you get Vampire I think it is a really fun class once you do the Blue Mage thing.  Wind Temple has White Wind which is amazing and you will want to get swap.  The lantern dudes have it and you need to Charm them, which Vampires can do.

You can try and fight the dragons legit.  But honestly, it may be more worthwhile to simply cheese them out.

PXZ2

Huh, I was slightly wrong.  Looks like 42 will be the last map.  That said, I was hoping they wouldn't go for immensely huge maps to finish this all off, since in 41, the key stat is, as it usually is, movement.  1/3 to 1/2 of my guys will be useless despite the numbers of enemies simply because there will be nothing living by the time they get to where they're going.

Completely ignoring the main mechanic of an encounter and engaging it in a way that pushes completely against the core mechanics is definitely what I would have thought of as an exploit/cheese back in my raiding days.

Primarily because unless you kill off all but one of your party members then Dodge/countering them to death takes a long time.  Like 15 minutes + on max speed auto battle long time.  That was fine to do while I was watching a movie but is like the definition degenerate gameplay. No interaction from the player side, completely bypassing literally all of the mechanics in the fights from the elemental resist reduction to the MT attacks to the status they inflict.

That said, if you are into the kind of gameplay that Vampire opens up and really want to ignore some of the other snoozetastic elements like Dark Knight (speaking of degenerate gameplay!) then its pretty great to grab and grab ASAP.

I basically agree with Grefter, with the caveat that the ice dragon may Objectively Deserve to be cheesed out.

I don't think I can really fault the cast for any kind of hypocrisy? In fact mostly they take reasonable actions given the circumstances and the actions themselves aren't particularly unlikable... I just have to roll my eyes at how bad the plot dialogue and events are towards the endgame. Which is a shame since they could have made something of the plot and characters but didn't. Just that dialogue was so bad. So very, very bad.

Pity since the little skits here and there, and the consistent banter/joking were pretty good. I liked how the cast always had something to say about every new enemy, or the bestiary had mini-discussions about the monsters including some good jokes. But the main plot writing was of such atrocious quality that it had me laughing at dead children so...
