FE that I am the only one slow enough to still be playing I guess - Ciatos, pro tip.  Buy Map DLC, Start a save file in Phoenix mode, Beach Royale, play as Ryoma, get everyone hit by Raider weapons.  Enjoy naked ninjas and Ryoma dual wielding radishes.

You are welcome.

I am also still slowly playing FE.  Up to Chapter 19.  Still not really crazy about the game.  There's a lot of stuff added but it mostly feels like bloat.  Yet lots of simple user-friendly things are missing.  Why is there no turn counter on the missions that require you to finish in X turns?  Why do I have to physically turn the game off to reload a save?

It's like Katamari Damacy 2.  HEY LOOK AT ALL THIS STUFF WE ADDED!  But I didn't really want you to add anything; I liked it the way it was.

1. Lower screen. You can toggle this between a unit view (where you see stats) and a map view by touching the grid icon in the lower-right corner. The map view shows the current turn.
2. You don't. Press L+R+Start.

Still not really crazy about the game.

Similar boat for me. I like the game, but I think I enjoyed Awakening better, minus the Ninja Reinforcements. Radiant Dawn is probably still the best FE to me (just the right blend of having skills/objectives/difficulty and more traditional style FE before the 3DS era FEs).

In other news, I am also playing the FEs but will save my thoughts once I'm done all 3 campaigns. Completed 2 of them now and found out from reading stuff that the optimal eugenics requires using a Male avatar. However, the Male avatar looks stupid so I refuse. Guess we'll be doing things SUB OPTIMALLY (sadness). However, using a Female Avatar means that you can pair everyone up without needing to use units that only have 1 support option. This theoretically makes parties a bit more flexible. Some of the more ridiculous eugenics set ups I've read about include 100% Miracle on Midori as well as a true dodge tank Selkie that is pretty much unhittable (not even with Certain Blow and a Breaker skill do you get good hit rates on it). However, using somewhat less optimal pairings may not hurt as badly (like the practical difference between a 99% Miracle and a 100% Miracle is not much). I won't be able to build teams like in Awakening anyway though since the optimal teams requires you to buy skills so you can get the Hoshido/Nohr unique skills to all the units you use. So RIP.

What I will not save my thoughts of is restarting FFX. I am not sure how far I plan to play up to, but in honor of Caracarn's WR/PB yesterday (10:16:06), I want to play long enough and figure out if I can build a Kimahri that isn't complete ass. So this will be an interesting experiement. I saved at Mi'hen Highroad, since this is really the first time you can break out of the Sphere Grid Locks. Oh, also thoughts regard character balance, etc. I'm surprised that NEB/other people actually haven't made a topic about this but I guess "blah blah Yuna is broke" is not very interesting!

Anyways, Final Fantasy 10 thoughts!
Starting out from Besaid since there's no real combat until this point really. We get some tutorial fights, first notable thing rechecking the base stats is that Wakka has an amazing 25 Base Accuracy. For those that forgot about FFX, this is like...15 more points than the next person (Tidus). Next, I find that I do not get access to Kimahri until after leaving the island. Welp, so much for trying to get a few levels earlier. Nothing important so far though since about the only things I've gotten are some measly +1 to stats.

Boat to Kilika takes place and the first "boss" occurs. Take out 2 cronies, then aim for the Fin. No one can OHKO these, so everyone is around equal. I could also throw Potions for slightly faster recharge as opposed to using Cure. But this costs some money, which I want to save if possible. Also, I have a low stock count right now, so Yuna's looking good at patching people back up quickly. Once two go down, time to go ham on the fin. Immediate problem is that this thing is long range. So RIP Tidus. Fortunately, the party of Lulu, Kimahri and Wakka can damage it pretty well (spells/Lancet/physical). I have Tidus cheer a couple of times to get more damage out of Wakka and so there's less damage dealt from the remaining guy left. The follow up to this fight is an underwater battle. So blah. Notable though that Tidus deals more damage and has Cheer - he's clearly more important here than Wakka. A

Kilika Forest time! After the Seed cannon tutorial, I explore the place fairly throughly (so you can't blame me for beelining to my next objective), and get a few sphere levels for everyone. Immediately, I recheck base stats. Wakka is hard for Kimahri to duplicate since he has significantly less accuracy. On the other hand, higher MP means he can status things out more and having Lancet means he will never run into MP issues. Tidus' grid starts off with too many weak stat boosts. I've also done this path before and I know it's not a good idea. Auron's grid also looks pretty weak since it just starts with mostly HP. The most appealing ones to start moving to are Lulu and Yuna's at this point due to Kimahri's high MP. No Sphere Keys yet though. Rikku's also looks good because early Steal + Use and Use as we all know is broke. That's probably the best move to make. As for the enemies, we get the staple "everyone should target their own thing". But maybe not. For starters, Lulu can get Overkills on the flyers, which Wakka can't. At least not yet and not without the Icestrike weapon found later in the area. He also doesn't deal enough damage to one round the lizards which Tidus can. So Wakka's looking kinda shabby. Also, Kimahri can use Lancet to damage them and maybe even kill one if you're too busy taking care of plants. Speaking of the plant! Lulu wrecks them. No one else sans Yuna calling Valefor handles them quite as well since they all do piddly damage. Lulu > Yuna > Tidus > Kimahri = Wakka for this area for now it seems.

Boss! Sinspawn Geneuax or whatever his name is! Tidus doesn't have Haste, but he can Cheer. Is it worth it? Probably not. Regardless, kind of a gimmicky opening since you need to use physicallers to take out the tentacles first. Okay. once those are dead, main boss appears and now Lulu's damage skyrockets. This is why Cheer is sorta not worth it. Still, Cheering means if you have Kimahri and Tidus at the same time, it will boost everyone's defense and ups your offense by 2/3 members. Not too bad. But needing to shuffle Yuna to heal occasionally obviously makes this less efficient. I just resort to using thwacks after about 3 cheers. Lulu still out damages everyone. Lulu again clearly the best person, with Yuna and Kimahri close behind. Tidus and Wakka don't do much at this point.

I also fight Lord Ochu after Ifrit. Now Tidus has Haste. And is a big deal. Haste up Lulu, watch her do about 500 damage each time while Yuna keeps the team patched up. Somewhere in there, Tidus chips in for a piddly 200 damage. I let the others take action too but this is clearly Lulu's show until his HP drops. At this point, it tries to become Snorlax, but Yuna summoning and Aeon Drive blows past this phase. So pecking order here is pretty clear (Yuna and Lulu > Tidus > the other two)

Oblitzerator is gimmicky, probably doesn't deserve a write up. But you need Tidus to trigger the crane and Lulu to power it. So uh, RIP Kimahri :(. At least he's getting levels, but for now, still bottom tier. Dang.

Heading out of Luca, I buy the Stunning Steel. I have to sell nearly everything in my inventory, but it's a pretty cool weapon since it adds Slow on hit half the time. Nothing else worth getting anyway except maybe a couple of P.Downs. I head to the highroad, and finally, we see more variety. This time, Wakka is clearly better against the air enemies. No MP cost + one shots and Lulu doesn't overkill with a spell, so he owns them. Also, he picked up a Fireball somewhere but this clearly illustrates NEB's point in the ranking topic about how Tidus lacks a niche. With weakness hitting, Wakka owns the wolves as well. AND he overkills whereas Tidus can't. Oh, he also has Dark Attack for the Dual Horns, which is important cause they hit kinda hard. Still slower though so the wolves will act before him, but hey. Meanwhile, it is Tidus who really lacks a niche in this area. Auron deals more damage. Kimahri deals more damage. Both have Piercing and he can't touch them. He also can't touch the elements or aerial enemies. However! He fares decently with the Stunning Steel since he can whack the Dual horns and the elements with it. Borth are susceptible to Slow and its pretty great when it connects. Still LVP in the area. The others all have a niche enemy they can exploit and Kimahri can chip in on elements/flyers with Lancet. He's not particularly notable here either. Luckily, we finally picked up some L1 Sphere Keys and Kimahri is making his way and getting close to entering Rikku's grid. Maybe he'll stop being bad soon enough.

I opted to win against Chocobo Eater, even though its faster to lose. Anyway, Haste is once again great. Hasted party wrecks this boss. Oh, and it can be Slowed. Ouch. So after Hasting, the most damaging characters are going to be the best. Well, at least Tidus can put this under his belt. Wakka, even when hitting weakness just isn't as good as Tidus landing the Slow + Haste Up. Overall in the Highroad so far, Wakka > Lulu > Yuna (Aeonless) > Auron > Kimahri > Tidus for randoms, and Tidus > Auron = Lulu > Yuna > Wakka > Kimahri for the boss.

Kimahri lacking a niche this early kinda sucks. He's just outside the KO range on Armored enemies and he doesn't have the support spells right now to really put a fight against Tidus in bosses. Speaking of Tidus, he's also pretty bad right now! But will be interesting as we progress up the Highroad since Kimahri will finally get Stealingz and Use.

what the fuck is going on.

Also the Steal -> Holy route for Kimahri has held up for me every time.  He isn't super useful all the time, but I also don't hate it whenever he gets turns.

I'm sorry Grefter but I can't play in optimal fashion like laggy-chan all the time :(.

Also, the fastest way to "beat" Chocobo Eater is to get knocked off the cliff because you do not game over if that happens. It also has 10,000 HP which is quite a bit that early. So the speedrun strat actually Hastes him, then just defends until he pushes you off the cliff. Obviously, this would not help me determine how good characters are balanced/making Kimahri not awful, so I couldn't do that.

I will say that if you are building a physical-oriented Kimahri that he'll actually high the most physical damage at that point in the game (essentially being a better Auron minus however much you want to hype Power/Magic Break at that point). Though yeah, long-term the Steal/Use/Holy is likely more potent overall.

I also have a FFX run which was suspended when Fates came out; I think I'll get back to it after this weekend. :)

Bravely Second: End Layer - beaten

On the whole, I'm much more positive towards the game than I was towards Default. But I get the feeling that they didn't want me to be? I'm thinking that the best thing to talk about first is the Rail Switch.

So. The game will happily figuratively run straight off a cliff if you either miss or ignore the rail switch. Missing it is reasonable if you've ignored it all game, ignoring it is reasonable if you haven't - because in this particular instance it functions completely differently than how it normally does. (For reference, I ignored it the first time, but was alerted to its existence when trying to look up a different issue after re-completing the prologue chapter and it is at least easy to return to.) I definitely have the feeling that the developers expected people to not use the rail switch multiple times.

For one thing, there is dialogue later on that only makes sense if you've done that. For a second thing, there's the sidequests. It's difficult to relay why the sidequests matter without spoiling the nature of the rail switch, unfortunately. So as far as I understand things, in the original release of the game you need to complete each sidequest 4 times to have truly completed it, which is only possible if you skip using the rail switch twice (ignoring postgame options). Happily, in the PAL release you only need to complete each sidequest twice, which fits in nicely.

If I hadn't been alerted to the existence of the rail switch - I would be nowhere near as happy with the game as I am currently. Let's just say, if the game ever gives you a tutorial mission to find a key, and you can't find it, I recommend you turn quest markers on if you disabled them for some reason, turn the game off completely and leave it for a bit and come back to it later.

In other bad news - the game locked the system up three times. Each time happened while I was adding a bunch of braves via the L button. On the whole that's a miniscule fraction of the total times I added braves with the L button, but maybe something to keep in mind. At least the game still autosaves on every floor change.

I went with a team with only new classes (and freelancer). At the end, my team was as follows (bold = main, italics = abilink) -
Yew:
Freelancer/Catmancer/Patissier
Catmancy/Confectionary
Waste Not/Items For All/Glacé/Divining Rod/Dungeon Master

Edea:
Wizard/Astrologian/Guardian/Yōkai
Diabolism/Astral Magic
Precognition/Spellcraft/ditto/Full Charge/Steady MP Recover

Magnolia:
Charioteer/Fencer/Kaiser
Supremacy/Swordplay
P.Attack 20% up/Quad Wield/ditto/Stampede/Eye Of The Wolf

Tiz:
Bishop/Hawkeye/Exorcist
Shamanism/Holy Magic
Barrage/P.Attack 20% Up/Steady MP Recover/Precision/ditto

Either JP gains are higher in the game, or JP costs are lower, because everyone ended up mastering their first class in Chapter 2 as opposed to Chapter 4 in Default. Of course this wasn't a significant help to me given that I was using a heavily restricted set of classes, but would have been nice if I hadn't been restricting myself. Of further course, another explanation could be that the changes to the bestiary led to me getting into significantly more fights than in Default? On the flipside of that, I often disabled encounters once the bestiary was seemingly complete for a given area. (Assuming that Gold Chompers can only be found in Dimension's Hollow, 'seemingly' turned out to be 'actually', hooray.)

I never ended up attempting to fight That Jerk in Default, and I thought I'd try it here. After getting flattened the first attempt, I came back and dropped a bunch of guests with ludicrously powerful attacks on them, only to discover that they are even more of a jerk that I was expecting. Ended up getting them down to 200k before some unlucky criticals managed to kill everyone at once. So, my options here are to wait a couple days for my SP to recharge, then drop multiple sets of guests with ludicrously powerful attacks; or to ignore them.

The standard final boss's AI might be slightly broken - most of the fight it kept using Dispel over and over, despite my not having anything dispellable up. It might have been being confused by Magnolia being in Wolf Stance; it will be interesting to hear if it has the same behaviour for anyone else who isn't using stances, if I can remember to listen by the time it comes out over there.

Story issues:
  • The villain team generally scoff at the idea of it being possible to end corruption without it returning. However their entire plan is to end corruption in the past instead. How exactly is that supposed to help?
  • The hero team consider changing the past to be evil, but it's considered to be a heroic course of action to take once they're in the End Layer. It's understandable that it might be considered necessary, but inconsistent for it to be considered a good thing.
  • The Kaiser's plan is foiled by Anne who sends him 200 years into the future. It's not clear whether he knows what actually happened - Agnès at least knows that they were sent to 'the brink of space and time' (and who even knows what 200 years into the future is like considering that the End Layer happens before that point) - but he should at least know that things went catastrophically wrong. And yet he wants to try again.
  • How did the ancients know that Lord Providence was going to start creating Ba'als out of Vega to assault Luxendarc?
  • Was Vega actually tricked by someone who didn't want her to go to Luxendarc, or was Lord Providence just puppeteering her into saying that to attack Altair emotionally? If the former, by who? Why? I don't think it's likely to be Deneb, and we don't really know of anyone else. The people who demoted Altair taking vindictiveness to ludicrous heights?
  • Supposedly, Yōko is behind Caldis and the rest of the world being mutually excluded from each other for a while[size], but it's never confirmed and there isn't any explanation provided as to why she'd cause it?
  • Who is the man in green who saved so many characters? It seems very unlikely for them to be referring to Yulyana so obliquely, but I have no better ideas. What were they saved from? Dying in Default? I'd like to remind them all that they were mostly all terrible people in Default who deserved to remain dead.
  • There's some lines indirectly stated by Sylvie in the End Layer that doesn't seem to have anything to do with anything. For future reference:
    Edea Lee.
A time is coming for you to come to a decision, no matter how difficult it may seem.
You must tell your friends, then you must lie to the people, deceive the world, make yourself out as a tyrant in word and deed.
Let yourself be attacked and blamed. Go after the friends you have lost.
Take that glimmering ship to the sky once more!

    ???????
Sequel hook? But it's placed at a very bizarre point in the game if that's the case. (People who are fans of sequel hooks will like to hear that the game has a very definite sequel hook at the very end.)

Quick notes:
* Some of the sidequests don't have very balanced choices.
* As far as I'm aware, there isn't anything which actually notifies/suggests/alludes that the postgame dungeons have opened up.
* The person in the mausoleum doesn't seem to have any point?

FFX rolls into Thunder Plains -

I pick up where I left off at the Agency. Not much to note for the randoms for the most part since they are largely the same. I do head to the low road and there are some different enemies there, but for the most part, there's nothing remarkable about them. I do however go back and ride a Chocobo afterwards for the treasures. You can't blame me now for being underlevelled since I'm deliberately taking more fights than I should :P

Time for Operation Mi'hen. The party rolls into Mushroom Rock and several of the enemies here are basically just "use the proper character" and you OHKO. There are however, two particular monsters of note. The first are Funguars. These things can counter any attack about 50% of the time with MT Sleep. Ew. I was at first stumped on how to get around the counter, but then I used SCAN from Kimahri and saw they were vulnerable to sleep. Guess who just learnt Sleep Attack? The other enemy of note is the Garuda who is a tank random. It doesn't do a lot of damage, so I guess the point is to wear down your resources or something. Unfortunately for it, it is both vulnerable to Dark AND Slow. Once I get the statuses to land, I just clean up with Auron/Kimahri. I suppose using Lulu would be faster than Auron but I wanted to save MP since there's a type of enemy that nobody else can take care of. Sans Yuna anyway. Yuna with Aeons is broke and all that. Another thing of note is that Wakka stops being able to KO wolves at this point even with weakness hitting. I suppose you could drop the Strength Sphere on him from Blitz but pretty much all the males would want that. I'm not even sure if he's the best choice for it, since Tidus can take care of them just fine and it doesn't really improve him for bosses (not that it would hurt to be fair - certainly would make him better than Auron...probably). Wakka > Lulu > Tidus > Yuna/Kimahri > Auron I think?

Once I get to the Command Centre, I speak to O'Aka. I guess this is a one-time shop since I can't find these wares again later, but there's some really cool stuff here. The Avenger looks interesting but Tidus doesn't have Guard, so he can't redirect attacks towards him. Also, at 6k, it's kind of pricey. The real steal is the TKO weapon for Wakka. It costs only a fraction more than the Avenger (about 7.5k) but has Stonetouch on it. More on how good this makes Wakka later. After the shop, here comes Gui. Gui's kinda the first boss that's supposed to be more challenging, but when you've played through the game a bit, he's kind of a wuss. Tidus is still MVP for this fight because Haste just shits all over the boss. Auron's good here too because Power Break neuters the Body's ability to really make any damage stick. So really, the only thing I have to worry about is the head. Since Wakka only deals like 200 (if even) and Lulu deals like 450-500, it was pretty easy on who to use here. I Haste up Lulu and Auron, then Tidus and the party goes to town. Lulu takes care of the head as Tidus and Auron work on the body. I also Cheer Up with Tidus to boost my offense a little and Gui goes down like a chump. Shout outs to Spiral Cut overkill for 1500 damage. Tidus > Auron > Lulu > Yuna/Kimahri > Wakka

Djose Highroad is the first time Kimahri finally gets Steal. Unfortunately, he doesn't get it until we're towards the end so he really doesn't get a lot of time to be its sole unique user. That's fine though since he's still okay for now at other tasks. Most notable, Basiliks here are kind of tough. They don't really have a lot of vulnerabilities other than Slow and there's not much to do but whack them to death. Since Yuna gets a Stoneproof ring, she's obviously good here. These things don't do much damage anyway, so PRAY actually outpaces their damage. What the fuck. After that, Kimahri and Auron are still the best damage dealers so I put them to work. I could use Lulu (again) since they only null Thunder, but eh. Wakka's kind of bad against them actually. Maybe they were also vulnerable to Sleep. The rest of the enemies are again, pretty much chumps or stuff we've seen before. The only other thing of note: it seems insects don't share the elemental resistances as eyeball bats or imps, so Lulu is actually better against them then Wakka due to guarantee Overkilling. Once Kimahri has steal, he picks up a Silence Grenade and a Petrify Grenade. Both items are pretty good, so Steal already making its rounds. Not sure on ranks here. Something like Yuna > Kimahri > Auron/Wakka/Lulu/Tidus. The area is kind of short anyway.

Past all the plot stuff at Djose and we move to Moonflow. Some more new randoms here. Of note, is the Ochu. These things have a ton of HP (7200), do a fair bit of damage (4HKOish) and can add Poison. They are a big pain to take down normally. That is until I used Kimahri's Stone Breath and found out that they were vulnerable to petrify. Now, I only have 1 Petrify Grenade and Kimahri's OD needs time to recharge. BUT, Wakka's TKO doesn't have these limitations, so he owns these things for free. Instead of taking like 12 hits, they go down in like 3, if even. The Stonetouch thing even works on Wolves and flans, so yeah, he pretty much wrecks face here even if he can't get the kill on raw damage. This in turn frees up Kimahri to start being a Klepto and steal things. Nothing too valuable at the moment but he pads up my inventory with lots of Hi-Potions. Can't complain. Wakka > Lulu > Tidus > Kimahri > Yuna > Auron

At the Shoopuff station, nothing happens. I was hoping for better O'aka wares, but the only thing really worth grabbing is the Double-Edge for Tidus, a dual elemental weapon. Extractor is an underwater fight and Tidus again owns Wakka's face thanks to Haste, hitting harder and Stunning Steal's slow. Wakka has Lightning touch but that's about it. I'm starting to notice a trend here.

Rikku rejoins and now I have two thieves. The first thing to note is that building Kimahri in this way does not intrude on Rikku's role and vice versa. This is most likely due to their starting base stats. Of particular note is that Rikku is faster (16 Agility vs. 12 Agility) but is more frail, even when caught up on HP (1160 HP vs 1980 HP). This latter part matters on the Thunder Plains where the enemies start hitting pretty hard. Also, Kimahri can fill in some physical duties (although he's starting to fall behind) whereas Rikku is just bad right now. Of course, doubling up on Stealing also doesn't really hurt his capacity since you can double steal on every enemy formation but you can't say get double wolves since sometimes only one wolf will spawn (thus making him redundant). I predict good things for our Ronso friend, although looking at stats, Kimahri might have also made a decent mage. He gets a Mag+20% weapon by Djose, has Lancet to refill MP and his Magic right now isn't even that far away from Lulu even though he's not on her grid. Maybe next time I will look into this. Doubling up on statuses could also work, but he won't have Wakka's accuracy or weapons, so I'm skeptical about this.

After all the plot things in Guadosalam, Thunder Plains is a doozy. First, the enemies in this place hit really hard. Most of the spells do about 450-600 damage. This is where that HP difference between Kimahri and Rikku sorta matters. The shops do sell Thunder Ward armor, but at 2300 gil a piece, there's no way to outfit everyone normally. I barely have enough money as is without going poor and you really don't need 7 pieces since Tidus does get the Thunderproof armor about 1/2 way through. Instead I get them for Yuna, Lulu and Auron for better spell tanking, just in case.

Next the enemies, there are 2 different flyer enemies here. So right off the bat, good start for Wakka. There's of course, the odd lizard and the odd dragon, but they are cannon fodder and the weak end for randoms. You can say the same for the 2 flyers, but the fact that there are two types means Wakka is more centralizing and it makes Lulu great too since Magic doesn't care about accuracy. Past those, we also get the Larvae and Iron Giants. Larvae are pretty nasty. They do lots of Thunder damage and have enough HP to tank a hit from most people. Iron Giants are similar, but they are armored, meaning you need Piercing and instead do lots of physical damage. You know what else they share? Stone vulnerability. Wakka has a field day here and owns both, making him the best slayer. Sure, you give up the potential to maybe get an Overkill, but taking both out in like 1-2 hits is pretty great when the rest of the party struggles to do that. Lulu might be able to put a fight against the Larvae but I didn't have Watera until about 3/4 of the way through, so Wakka carried the party pretty hard! Also, Wakka isn't slow, so that's another big thing going in his favour. Since Wakka can take care of most enemies, my thieves get more time to dance around and steal stuff. Also, since there is only 1 Wakka, I often get Yuna come in to NulShock the party to buy an extra turn. The LVP here feels like its Tidus. He can't really do much - Slow doesn't matter for Petrify kills (mostly) and his damage is pretty bad. He does have good speed for good openers though. Hard to tell if that's better than Auron's tanking (especially with Guard) since Ambushes are obviously deadlier and Tidus can get killed quite easily without the Yellow Shield.  Wakka > Lulu > Yuna > Kimahri = Rikku > Tidus with Yellow Shield > Auron > Tidus without Yellow Shield.

More FFX -

Picking up in Macalania Woods, the randoms here start to get bulkier. That or I haven't been using some PCs as often as I should be, I dunno. If it is the latter, it sorta highlights who is worse in the party. Anyway, why do I say that? Well, the armored moles and the lizards in this area can actually survive 1 hit from Auron and 1 hit from Tidus. Uh oh. Thankfully, I had the foresight to keep elemental weapons. They are actually quite good for the main game, and here, after equipping, I could OHKO again. It was also a good warning sign that I needed to use both a little bit more since otherwise I may not be able to OHKO those types for a while. Eventually, Auron reaches his Str+4 node and now he goes from barely OHKOing to overkilling. Good job, Auron. Also of note are Chimeras and Xiphos. Both enemies are quite tanky and in the case of the former, can also be quite damaging. You probably are starting notice a bit of a pattern with these types of enemies. And yep, they can be petrified, although in the case of the Chimera, it has some resistance to Petrify so it takes Wakka somewhere between 5-6 hits before I get it. In the meantime, Yuna can try to predict the element its going to use to block it or I can have Tidus attack in hopes of getting a Slow proc. At this point, I get to O'Aka and grab the Sonic Steel. Wakka (takes out both unique randoms amongst others) > Lulu (can overkill with magic and generally covers all other enemy types if need be) > Yuna (healing battery + null spells) > Tidus (Slow Procing) > Auron (can tank) > Kimahri (can somewhat tank/steal) > Rikku (has nothing but steal).

Spherimorph is a bit interesting. I forget if he has a pattern. IIRC he does not. Regardless, he's a wuss cause his damage is really low. It's low enough that Hasted Yuna can  probably outspeed his damage with Pray. Despite that, Haste is not the solution to this fight because his P.Def is pretty high and he counters everything except his weakness. Since most of the fighters have bad MDef I don't want to try and slug it down this way. Instead I have Yuna poke it with her rod, then get Lulu to cast the corresponding spell. Auron comes in at some point and hits it with Magic Break, thus rendering his offense to be even worse than normal. At that point, it was pretty academic. I suppose I could've Hasted both Yuna and Lulu, but eh. Just doesn't feel as important for this fight since his offense was so trashy and when you hit weakness on him, he goes down quick. Lulu (damage + tanks most damage) > Yuna (tanks most damage + infinite healing because bad boss offense) > Kimahri/Rikku (Use damage if you care) > Tidus = Auron (Haste is negated by counters and bad MDef makes him a bad point character. Auron has Magic Break, but nothing else) > Wakka (has nothing of note, again).

The road to the temple is pretty short and nothing terribly exciting happens along the way. I do however manage to steal enough Arctic Winds to add Iceproof to Tidus' Lightning Proof armor. Most of these enemies are taken out with the corresponding character, so there's not much to note there. BUT, with the Sonic Steel now, putting Tidus into the party allows characters who around the same speed as him to often get 2 turns at the start of the battle. Very useful for getting Rikku in to do 2 steals, or to steal then swap to someone else.

Once we start moving to the Temple, we get a mini boss rush. First up is Crawler. Crawler might actually be the first real "tough" boss. No real holes, starts off with a Silent Lake effect and when you do hit his weakness he counters with something that does a lot of damage (2HKOs everyone but Kimahri and Auron). Getting rid of Negator doesn't solve the fight either since it is bulky enough that you will likely get hit by Mana Beam and Mana Beam comes close to OHKOing (and probably does on a few people I think). There are several ways to go about it, but the way that made the most sense for me was to have Rikku/Kimahri toss Electro Marbles on Negator, which 2HKOs it. This puts Crawler into his Mana Beam phase. I then Shell Yuna since she won't be attacking and can serve to anchor the team, bring in Auron and have him use Guard while Lulu starts casting Magic. Eventually, I swap up this pattern to using Rikku with Items just so I can rebuild Overdrive. At 900 damage per Thundara, this boss has 16000 HP, so it takes quite a few hits before it truly goes down. I do Haste up both Lulu and Yuna but don't think this really made that much of a difference just because of all the counters in between. Shout outs to Crawler's AI by the way, who ended up deploying Negator when he was 1 turn away from unleashing Mana Beam. In the words of Wakka, "Stupid Machina. They just stopped their own magic too". Ranking orders here start getting difficult to determine. But for this fight, Rikku/Kimahri > Yuna > Lulu > Auron > Tidus > Wakka. Thrown Items > Wakka for attack Negator, do the same amount of damage as Lulu afterwards and Kimahri can take more hits even. Rikku has Mix Overdrive which can do about 6k damage. Yuna can tank Mana Beam and generally won't be at risk of dying since she won't be attack so she serves as a pretty good anchor. Lulu could too but you want her to be attacking and she's slower than Rikku/Kimahri, doesn't deal any more damage, becomes deadweight when Negator is present. All this adds up to feeling worse than the others. Auron can tank physical hits, which I think beats Tidus' Haste here. Counters really negate the turn advantage bonus and his damage is awful for this, let alone having worse durability for Mana Beam/tanking assault hits if he uses a Lightning Weapon. Wakka has nothing (bad damage, Negator can be taken out with the item users).

After Crawler is the Syemour/Anima/Seymour chain. The 2 Guado Guardians can be a pain if you don't know how to handle them and let Seymour get carried away with spellcasting. But since I do know how to handle them and the most efficient way is to drop a Petrify grenade on them. Good show Kimahri. You could also Stone Breath for similar results and that would work pretty well too. Once those two guys are dead, the first phase of Seymour isn't really a problem. He 2HKOs but there's always time to heal. I buff up Tidus and since Kimahri has REFLECT now, he probably owns Seymour phases for free. I'm not aware Seymour even has Dispel, but it was pretty funny watching him commit sudoku as he bounces a L2 spell on himself. Anima...well, I dunno. The game makes it pretty clear you should summon Shiva for this (thanks to Tidus/Wakka having lines), but I know you can beat it without having to. Did I actually try this? No. Oh well, just chalk it up to Yuna /w Aeons > everyone forever. I suppose though that Tidus would be the best dude here since he can Haste some folks and that Talk command Strength bonus is pretty good. I assume Oblivion is magic, so you could probably Shell through it, but the ID all over the place is icky. Seymour then comes back and wants to acquire Yuna's soul or something. Unfortunately for him, I still have Reflect Up and he proceeds to nuke himself. Tidus being Hasted, hits him once, Slows him as an insult from the Stunning Steel, then wrecks his face in with a Spiral Cut overkill. I get 2 Black Magic Spheres instead of 1 as a result. Kimahri > Tidus > Yuna > Rikku > Lulu/Auron/Wakka. Kind of weird, but Kimahri being able to beeline to reflect sorta wrecks Seymour's face pretty hard. Then he has Use/Ronso Rage to negate the Guado guards in one swoop. Tidus' Haste/Slow game works well enough if you can get it set up and he has a Strength bonus this fight. Yuna can at least try to stave damage off with Nul spells. The other four don't really do much as far as I can tell. Seymour begins Shell'd, so he Lu can't really damage him...Auron's sluggish and Guard can't redirect magic damage, Rikku/Wakka are still non-existent on boss damage right now. I guess Rikku could throw items, but Kimahri can do that too...and is a bit bulkier. So I guess she's fourth or something.

Exiting out of the temple gives us a couple of Guado Guard fights. And again, if you saved up that OD, Kimahri can one shot. Or you can slug them down, steal their potions and generally laugh at them. Wakka owns them for free since petrify doesn't care about Auto Potions. With 2 Black Magic Spheres, I decide to give Kimahri and Yuna an offensive spell. The reasons for this is just because there's no one else who can really use these (all the boys and Rikku have bad magic). I split it 1 a piece for balance. Yuna picks up Watera and Kimahri grabs Thundara. Just in time for Wendigo too. I assume he starts Berserk? Otherwise, that's a lot of damage. Sensor doesn't say he is though, so I don't bother trying to Esuna him or something. Instead I make Auron Power Break, then Guard and Haste up Yuna. The guy hits pretty hard every couple of turns (about 2700 damage /wout Power Break), but its ST and Auron can usually tank the hit. Usually. I do have Light Curtains, but no Protect. Later, when it goes into its counter attack phase, I just bring in my mages, swap Kimahri to his Magic+20% Halberd and watch as he outdamages Lulu.

EDIT: Apparently, it is vulnerable to Sleep. You learn something new every day

Kimahri (has Dispel, best magic damage, decently bulky, use Light Curtain) > Wakka (owns the guards, then sleep owns the first phase) > Lulu (damage, less bulky and slower, but evade) > Auron (Power break + damage re-direct) >  Yuna (Heals + adds some damage) > Tidus (can Haste but questionable offense) > Rikku (no offense sans Use and needs someone else to take out guards)

After that fun chain of bosses, we get to Bikanel. This place is huge by the way and there are lots of enemies. New fodder enemies are introduced in the form of machines. Rikku and Kimahri one shot these with Steal. Lulu can Overkill with Thundara if you want. The others don't do anything notable against them. Also, more birds and they don't resist magic. I would make a point for Lulu again, but now Wakka can too. After awhile, he doesn't even need the Fireball to do it. The wolves prove to be the only enemy I struggle to KO again, but Lancet ignores their evasion and eventually Tidus gets caught up again without needing to hit weakness. Let's talk about the unique enemies there.

There are 4: the Land Worm, Zuu, Sandragoras and Cactuars. Land Worms are massive HP tanks (45000) and take forever to slug down. They are also immune to most statuses, so taking one down is a pain. The one thing they are susceptible to is Demi, but Lulu's not far enough on the grid to learn it. This is a problem. However, it so turns out that they carry Shadow Gems on them. So Rikku/Kimahri can go ham from stealing then immediately using the gem. They can also be ejected, so Auron can knock them out. The other three can't do much...well Tidus can Slow, but it would still take a while to slug it down. Kimahri's magic is strong enough that he can overkill these once their HP is low enough, so he's better than Rikku in that sense. Zuus are also HP tanks (18000 HP) and can't be petrified. Still, they are vulnerable to Demi, Slow and Darkness. Of the three, Darkness is the most available, so Wakka can keep it under a control for a while as you try to take it down. The Shadow Gems work here too, but you need to have stolen them ahead of time. Past that Kimahri beats everyone on raw damage, and eventually the fight does come down to that, so he wins. Cactuars are the opposite - they are dodge tanks. Low HP, very high evasion. Overdrives can get them, so can thrown items, so Rikku/Kimahri own them. Also, they drop a crazy amount of AP and initiative weapons. Both very cool. Lastly, you can steal Chocobo Feathers/Wings off them so you can get the Hastega effect early! They are pretty rare though and have a tendency to run. As for Sandragoras, they exist as blockades. The scariest thing they can do is Confuse you. BUT, since Auron is so slow, I have Tidus swap in and have Auron use Guard to eat the confuse it. From there, Wakka can petrify it, while someone else heals confuse. Order this time is tough cause everyone is good at something. There are no randoms here that Lulu specializes in and she lacks Demi for the two she would be good with. All in all, this is probably her worst performance thus far, but still she can Overkill birds, which is something. Wakka too also isn't as good. Everything that you can petrify gets OHKO'd by the respective character. He sorta gets the Zuus though, the bulk of the damage comes from others. Most likely Kimahri > Rikku > Wakka > Tidus > Lulu >  Auron. Kimahri has damage, can Lancet to keep his MP Up, OHKOs mechs, and can take out Land Worms/Zuus/Cactuars. Also Al Bhed Potioning. Rikku has all of the above, but no damage so she's bad against Zuus. Wakka can petrify Sandragoras, takes out flyers, and at least neutralizes Zuus. Tidus is all about Sonic Steel. But its that good. Lulu can at least take out birds + other randoms, and has damage for the tank randoms. Auron has more damage than Wakka/Tidus and maaaaaaybe Lulu but that's about it.

I'm aware that there are random battles in Home but I proceeded fast enough to get only into 1, so this wouldn't be very reflective. As for the forced fights...well Kimahri owns these for free if you've had some foresight to withhold on learning some of his Ronso Rages. Since his OD bar instantly recharges, he can use Lancet to learn Fire Breath and Aqua Breath and get a free OD bar in a few of the force fights. Stone Breath owns all the encounters and since you probably don't have a ton of Petrify grenades, this is the most reasonable way of MT killing everything. The other is through Use and dropping bombs like Smoke Bombs or Sleeping Powders. So Kimahri wins again! Hurray.

Airship randoms - see above. I only got into like 1 or 2. I did steal enough Bomb Cores in that time to Customize Fire Proof to one of Lulu's Elemental Proof armors though. Then we get Evrae. Evrae...I dunno. The safest way to kill him is actually at range. So I bring the ship out, and buff dudes with Protect/Haste/Cheer and toss Al Bhed Potions for healing while Cid bombs it with 3 Missile Salvos for about 7200 damage. I then have Wakka work on chipping it down at about 1700 damage a hit. Eventually, he draws himself closer to me. I Power Break him to keep his claw damage miniscule and eventually trigger his Haste Limit. Interestingly enough, he only seems to counter Slow with Haste. If you Dispel the Haste, he doesn't recast it. I did not know this until this playthrough. Without his Haste, he's chump change at this point. 11000 HP is easy to take down and Tidus even gets an overkill for like 6000 damage. Stone Gaze was really the only thing to worry about. I guess Poison Breath too, but the one time he was going to use it, Cid had a turn before it so I just moved out of the way >_>. Oh, and as for who has Protect/Dispel since Yuna isn't in the party? Our blue Ronso hero *single tear*. Kimahri (has Dispel/Protect, MT healing with Al Bhed Potions, decent bulk, Lancet for long range chip damage) > Tidus (Haste/Slow speed game, decent enough damage after Cheer) > Auron (Power Break for close range keeps everyone safe, especially after Protect. Decent damage) > Wakka (long range poking) > Rikku (Al Bhed Potions/Stealing) > Lulu (has nothing because boss halves all elements).

Bevelle series...these fights can be a pain OR a complete joke. It was a complete joke this time because all the guards are vulnerable to sleep and I have like 20+ Sleeping Powders still from Bikanel. So Rikku/Kimahri laugh at them pretty bad. As for the mechs, Lulu/Tidus/Kimahri makes the best team for damaging them. I do bring in Wakka and Auron a few times for AP, but they aren't notable here. Down in Via Purifico, Watera helps Yuna with the Maze Larvae, but for the other fights, I largely rely on Lulu/Auron here. Kimahri's great when he gets Thunder weakness, but everyone sorta struggles with the Lizards except Lulu, who can kill them with spells. Auron tanks, doesn't do much else, but he doesn't have to really. Still probably LVP, as Yuna can heal and can cast an offensive spell to chip in. Nothing to note for Underwater though. Boss gets 2x Phoenix Down'd so the only real determinant is Speed.

Bevelle pathway - the mechs hit really hard. In fact, the Cannon dudes OHKO most people sans Wakka/Auron! However, they do have Water Weakness and Wakka now, is caught up in Power, so Lulu/Tidus/Wakka makes the shortest work of them. Yuna can too with Watera - really a question of do you value more evade or want slightly more power (yes Yuna has more Mag than Lulu at this point...go figure). Auron's not really notable since he's just too slow and doesn't have a Water OR Fire strike weapon...whelp. Rikku is bad sans Steals since the mechs immune like every status. Tidus (Sonic Steel if need be + Damage from Weakness) > Wakka (doesn't get OHKO'd, damage) > Lulu (more evade than Yuna)  = Yuna (more damage than Lulu), Auron (can redirect damage to him, isn't OHKO'd. Okay on damage but really slow) > Rikku (nothing but Stealing).

At Flux, and uh...Reflect still owns him. Just now, Yuna also has it. Haste also owns him. I don't think he can be hit with Slow cause otherwise this is pretty pathetic. I Haste Up Tidus/Auron and have Kimahri/Yuna cast Reflect on the three and then just watch as Auron and Tidus do lots of damage against him. He does have a MT attack, but it deals like 500 damage or something, so Kimahri Al Bhed Potions it away. Eventually, he gets Flare, but by that point, it's too late. I have Tidus Spiral Cut his face in again for more Overkill bonus. Kimahri (has Reflect, MT healing from use) > Yuna (Reflect) > Tidus (Speed game + Talk bonus) > Auron (talk bonus for damage) > other three (none of them really add much)

Don't really agree with that. It has some gimmicks but overall is weak. Gatling Gun is so bad that even if you let it fully focus (against an SCC) it's not very damaging (generally missing a 2HKO), Mana Beam is legit but it's a huge called shot, and one which you can stop if you hit him with magic four times as you noted.

I guess it's okay (those counters aren't bad) but Sinspawn Gui is generally significantly more of a problem for people because of the double-acting thing. (Chocobo Eater if you actually want to win, too, but that's optional.)

It's non-typed and hits defence. You... really don't want to see it without an aeon summoned, it does over 2000 MT damage which isn't too easy to reduce (Cheer should work). That said you really shouldn't see it.

Just in time for Wendigo too. I assume he starts Berserk? Otherwise, that's a lot of damage. Sensor doesn't say he is though, so I don't bother trying to Esuna him or something. Are you sure about this? Wendigo's big damage move (the double punch) does about 2700 without Power Break. So if you're remembering right, either Power Break doesn't affect that move (i.e. it's not actually physical?) or something else is up here. The notes I have suggest that it's a normal physical attack so Power Break/Protect should work, but I could be wrong.

Not that it normally matters, Wendigo is vulnerable to sleep. lol

Yeah, I put "tough" in quotes for a reason. The main thing I couldn't really get around are the Assault counters. The obvious solution is to Use a Light Curtain but if you don't have those, it hits pretty hard. Lulu has some semblance of Evade so it's usually manageable as she's unlikely to be hit twice in a row. I just had Auron tank hits early on with Guard if need be. Eventually I just YOLO'd and had Rikku eat it for Overdrive build up. Gui didn't give me all that much trouble this time around.

Gui had double acting? I never saw it. Unless you mean Head + Body can act in succession. I've seen Demi or PAUNCH from Gui but that's it. I thought the arms auto regenerated after a counter so that's probably not the double act.

I just had Shiva handle it mostly. If Anima doesn't kill Tidus, he can probably blitz it down I think? No other really good forms of offense off the top of my head.

That's a typo on my part. Should say /wout >_>. Whoops! That being said, Sleep vulnerability makes Wakka better in that fight. Does he have enough MP to lock it down? Once it reaches the counter phase, Sleep doesn't matter that much since he doesn't counter magic, but it certainly helps out starting out.

Re Gui: Yeah, meant the head + body for the doubleacting there, each one only acts once. (The arms regenerating is a free action.)

Re Wendigo: Yeah I wouldn't think MP would be an issue for Wakka there.

Momodora: Jim was right, is sidescrolling Dark Souls with a very ignorable animu aesthetic. Beat hard mode, was hard. Playing through Insanity mode now. Dungeons are quite hard now because they're completely unforgiving, but bosses are frankly just as difficult if not easier than my first playthrough, partly because I've been using the attack boost items but mostly because I already recognize their patterns pretty well. Would recommend.

Glad you're liking it.  I beat insane mode a few days ago.  As I expected, the first area was brutal (you start insane with 1HP) but things eased up from there.  I guess I didn't mention it but another similarity the game has to Dark Souls is abusable, overpowered bow & arrow.  I leaned pretty heavily on bow & arrow - especially after picking up the item that adds fire element to your attacks, which ohbytheway means you can hitstun enemies with arrows like you normally can with melee attacks - and ranged item casts.  Considering playing through the game again and doing a melee only run.  Give Pardoner Fennel a sporting chance.

Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

Valkyria Chronicles was on sale, which reminded me that I bought it a while ago and played the first few missions before switching to something else (Endless Legend?).  Anyway, it's pretty fun.  Characters are animu as fuck but plot scenes can be skipped when I reach my limit of tolerance.  Combat's pretty fun and surprisingly grounded.  Then I get to a mission where I have to kill a supertank.  Interesting enough and requires some clever maneuvering.

Then I kill it and some bullshit magic lady shows up who can fly all over the place and kill everyone with lasers.

Nope, I'm done with this game.

The Emperor's supertank mission has stopped many a VC playthrough.  Quite the crazy challenge spike it is, and yeah, it moves too close to "frustrating" challenge rather than interesting challenge.  Alas.

Also?  Tonally inconsistent.  If you want to have magic laser people, you should introduce them early, not at the halfway point.  I actually really liked how the story was more or less free of the supernatural.  People talked about how the not-gypsy woman could put not-gypsy curses on people but that's just being superstitious and racist.

Eh, it's early.  Emperor's tank is what, mission 5 or 6 or so?  And Metal Gear Solid shows there's a grand tradition of "mostly realistic military, with occasional random bullshit superpowers" games being interesting.

It's fine as a plot concept, it's just the gameplay, while selling Selvaria as a badass, is too hard.  I'd just rig the mission to be basically a "know when to hold 'em and when to fold 'em" deal where getting wasted by the Emperor's personal tank & magic bodyguard is okay, and actually "Winning" is an easter egg for-honor deal, like the Suikoden 3 battles against the Masked Bishop & co. in Chapters 1-3.

Exactly 1/3 of the way through the game.

MGSV (the only one I've played) opens with Kid Jean Grey and a man on fire shortly after a scene where you have to crawl away from attackers because you're too fucked up from war.  The Skulls are introduced in mission 3 of 50.  MGSV may have trouble deciding whether it wants to be a gritty story about people fucked up from war (the intro, the Emmerich stuff or the child soldier parts), a power fantasy about soldiers of fortune (most of the game) or a weird conspiracy paranormal thriller (anything with the parasites), but it puts all those elements up front so that they are established as part of the story early on.  With Valkyria Chronicles, I had decided that I very much enjoyed this grounded conflict, where my previous two missions were "ford a river to attack an enemy base by surprise!" and "capture an enemy supply depot!"  So the introduction of a magic super fighter made me resentful, because it turns out the game was not what I thought all of the sudden.

Basically it just feels like the character gets pulled out of someone's ass.  I'm not saying you needed to have someone Gokuing around in Mission 2, but they probably needed to introduce the idea sooner through dialogue or something. It feels you're playing Axis and Allies and because the other guy lost the Bismark, they took a Thor action figure out and started knocking your pieces off the board with it because it's equal parts total bullshit AND it comes out of fucking nowhere.

Assassin's Creed 3 - Figured I should go back and fill this part of backlog out now that I have a computer that can bruteforce through the shitty optimisation.

All the other reasons I shitcanned it early are still there.  This is the slowest fucking game in the series and this is coming from a recent AC2 replay where you literally start off at birth with Ezio.

Also I know they just changed the control scheme in 3, but holy fuck the controls are shit house.  They are half way between the simplicity of 4 and the pointless complexity of the original control scheme.

Changing "Tools" is the fucking worst.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.
The king perfect of the DL is and always will be Excal. - Superaielman
Don't worry, just jam it in anyway. - SirAlex
Gravellers are like, G-Unit - Trancey.

I was genuinely surprised by the early reveal in 3, so at least it had that going for it.
