How have I been playing rpgs for over 20 years and the best example of a Hispanic rpg character is Ricardo gomez?

Who am I missing?

Well, we are talking about JRPGs here. The makers have very little interaction with people of Hispanic descent for the most part (or so I would imagine).

That kinda begs the question how well Western RPGs are doing at having Hispanic characters.  I have no idea what the answer is there, haven't played enough of them.  But let's just name a few plot-heavy games that have, y'know, actual characters and see what's in there: Torment, the BGs, PoE, the Witchers, the Shadowruns.  Thoughts?

What about that super-duper racist caricature of a wrestler, Greco from Chrono Cross?

The answer is, pretty much fucking nothing.

I think Fallout has some.  NPCs.  Pretty sure they are villains or not important.

For real though Greco is kinda rad.  He is a Lucha and a voodoo priest who can contact the dead via seance.

Yeah, not terribly surprised JRPGs don't really have many Hispanic characters. Japanese people are pretty into Japanese people and outrageous stereotypes. What is more surprising really is that the best example of a hispanic character with story importance is from a JRPG, to be honest.

Out of the WRPGs I've played... Mass Effect, none. KOTOR, none. The Witcher pretty famously had idiots going "non-white people in my Polish fantasy game would be unrealistic" so I feel confident in saying there's not gonna be any there. I can't think of any in New Vegas. That game even takes place in the fuckin southwest and... yeah. Not exactly whitewashed, but I wouldn't be surprised to find most of the cast there at a Dave Matthew's Band concert.

I want to say some of the early game gang member grunts in Deus Ex: Human Revolution were Hispanic, but I don't know if that would be better or worse than just not having anyone at all.

Yep. Racism is still in fact a thing. But don't go around complaining about it, you know how #TruGamers don't like your #politics in their #vijyagaems you fucking #SJW

While he's not exactly the most notable character in the series, Mass Effect does have James Vega.

Kinda surprised not to hear Shadowrun has some.  Pretty west coast franchise.

Code Name STEAM has Zorro's daughter, The Fox, and she's the strongest unit in the game! The whole game is kinda light on characterization and plot though. Still, that makes her the most prominent female Hispanic character in all of RPGs!

General Snake Vargas from Wasteland 2, who is a central character both in terms of the plot and the game world.  He's swinging the biggest dick in Arizona.  Plus he's already saved the world in Wasteland 1.

I want to say some of the early game gang member grunts in Deus Ex: Human Revolution were Hispanic, but I don't know if that would be better or worse than just not having anyone at all.

The leaders of the anti-aug terrorist group from the first mission are also Hispanic.  You know, the guy you can talk down from a hostage situation?

I can't think of any in New Vegas. That game even takes place in the fuckin southwest and... yeah. Not exactly whitewashed, but I wouldn't be surprised to find most of the cast there at a Dave Matthew's Band concert.

You forgot Raul.  You know, the companion played by Danny Trejo?  Talks about living in Mexico City before the war and how the shit hit the wall there.

Kinda surprised not to hear Shadowrun has some.  Pretty west coast franchise.

Paco from SRR?  Less surprising that they're not in Dragonfall (where most characters were Central European) or Hong Kong (where your characters were mostly from Asia).  I would imagine that their next game will involve Aztechnology, since they've made a few cameo appearances and they're the second-biggest conglomerate in the world.

New job started this week.

On the bright side, there is plenty of opportunity for me to make positive changes here. On the negative side, well, the same.

Things are a little messy here. There hasn't been much of a marketing department for over a year, and our production teams rule the world. This is not unusual for a smaller company in this industry but it does make it an uphill battle to do what I do. I have one direct report who is fairly passive and may make this even more difficult than it needs to be.

On that note: holy hell, I had no idea people could be so meek! My orientation meetings have been all over the place. I don't know if this is just a Japanese workplace thing, but a lot of people here are very "work horse": blinders on and do as they're told, no more, no less. I have gotten quite a few blank looks for questions on the order of, "So other than exactly what you've been told to do, what have you done?" That result is alarming considering the amount of creative work coming from this office. (That's "creative" as in it's made up of drawings and writing, not creative as in innovative. 'Cause it's not the latter, that's for sure.)

Still. Regime change. Bosses are open to making things happen and recognize that something about the way things are isn't quite working. It's a start!

As far as I can tell, Japan is stuck in the well-meaning-but-super-embarrassing 80's approach to diversity exemplified by Street Fighter, Captain Planet, the X-Men reboot, ABBA and the like, where we show how inclusive and diversity-minded we are by packing as many different racial caricatures into our stuff as it takes for people to like us.

"From Africa.  The country Africa."

I always thought it was funny that Claremont had everyone say really simple words in German or whatever a character's native language was (while talking in Claremont's overwrought English dialogue) except for Storm.  I assume it's because he didn't bother to find out what language they speak in "Africa the Country."

Y'know, Black Mountain was the next quest I was gonna do before I got distracted and stopped playing NV. Fair enough! Also shit did not realize he was voiced by Danny Trejo, I would have beelined for that motherfucker.

This is on average, true. Further ahead in being tolerant of gay marriage (like, two cities legalized it?), but way behind in perceptions of... well basically anyone not Japanese.

Valentines was SO GOOD. ^-^ I had bacon for breakfast (been years, really) and hung out with Remington, got some expensive perfume and felt ridiculously guilty for a second. Had bacon for dinner. Winning.

Using Lunar SSSC to test out some PS controllers I bought at a thrift shop.  Loaded up my final battle save and other than the static Fate Storm + Chaos Shield, first 4 random turns were all Hell Wave + Rock & Roll.  Really RNG...

Controllers work, including vibration function, yay.
