Yeah, but I knew about that going in. At least, it's not like I highly value my sleeping hours anyway.

I have been feeling the baby move for a couple weeks now. It started out like a goldfish fluttering in a bag (except, you know, the bag is my torso) but now it's progressed to full-on thumps against my organs. My mom is telling me it was one of her favorite parts of being pregnant. And I'm like... yeah, it's kinda neat, 'cause that's a future life, and maybe my perspective will change when I have a human being to remember it about, but for now? It's fucking WEIRD.

My mothering instincts had damn well better kick in when this thing gets here. As it is, babies are still boring idiots (seriously, have you tried shopping for gift for a 1-year-old? they're too stupid and boring to get more than, like, brightly colored and very large blocks), and I'm resenting that I still have like 3.5 months of my body being hijacked by something that is beating me up from the inside.

On the bright side, despite my doctors' insistence that being fat is surely causing every health problem that could exist, therefore forcing me to test this not once but TWICE, I don't have gestational diabetes. Suck it, doctors.

Get a mirror. They use it to look at their dumb faces until they wise up and start doing cocaine off it like a normal person.

So... yeah. Matthew is expected to hit Florida pretty solidly. 50MPH winds with gusts of up to 80. If I go offline anytime in the next two days it means power's out.

Did okay getting stuff. Bread was all out, but people hadn't hit the rolls yet. The Universal employee store was selling 24 packs of water for 5 bucks, so I lucked out there. The only duct tape left was hot pink, so woo breast cancer awareness! Now I just need to move stuff around to safer places in my apartment and I'll be good to go.

Baby shower was on Saturday.

I had planned  to hold it at the local park because I was expecting ~20 people and my space is just not good for that many people. A combination of RSVPs that were unexpectedly "no" and a couple of "yes" that turned into no-show, plus the weather turning chilly and windy, meant that I ended up sending people to the park so we could try to consume Chipotle catering only to give up and move back to our place anyway.

Overall pretty typical party for Andrew and I: people kind of stood around and talked awkwardly while eating, then we did a few game things, opened presents, and played REAL games. Because it was a co-ed, mostly friends shower, we didn't do any of the silly traditional baby shower games ("guess how big mommy's stomach is!" "guess what kind of melted chocolate looks alarmingly like irritable bowel syndrome leavings!"). I made people paint onesies for us, which gave me a collection of nerdy onesies I'm happy to have.

I also revealed we are having a girl we are naming Juniper by asking people to guess her due date.

Considering the number of people who showed up, we ended up with an alarming amount of presents. From classic baby books (thanks, QR and Gate!) to hand-modified Magic 8 Balls that answer the question "Why is my baby crying?", we ended up with a nice bunch of practical but also amusing things to help get us started.

Then we played Dominion.

Sunday officially marked the beginning of the 3rd trimester.

Andrew and I need to go buy some basics -- like the car seat and a place for baby to sleep -- but that's pretty much the end of milestone events/announcements before the baby is actually here. There are a ton of holidays between now and then that will make time move very quickly. Yikes.

so folk are checking into Standing Rock on their FBs after this msg:
"The Morton County Sheriff's Department has been using Facebook check-ins to find out who is at Standing Rock in order to target them in attempts to disrupt the prayer camps. SO Water Protecters are calling on EVERYONE to check-in at Standing Rock, ND to overwhelm and confuse them. This is concrete action that can protect people putting their bodies and well-beings on the line that we can do without leaving our homes. Will you join me in Standing Rock?"

And, like I do most times when I see it on Facebook: http://www.snopes.com/facebook-check-in-at-standing-rock/

Quote
There is no doubt that law enforcement comb social media for incriminating material and monitor communications.

There is no solid line between "organizers" and "others"- this is a movement, not an organization. There are many camps and points of contact, we can only verify that it did not originate from the Sacred Stone Camp FB page. We support the tactic, and think it is a great way to express solidarity.

They are asking for direct support in the form of a donation to their legal fund. It's already made its goal but I can't imagine that'd be enough for something like this, so every extra bit helps. Just kidding, they upped their goal accordingly.

Well, yeah. They said as much too. "Thanks for the solidarity."

I post Snopes shit about viral memes to my Facebook friends' statuses all the time. A lot of my FB friends are idiots who barely graduated high school and certainly never ventured outside the bubble that was my small town community. In this case, the Snopes article isn't saying the meme is bad, it's clarifying the origin -- the official FB page doesn't claim it -- and saying they're not sure how much it helps, but it's nice to see people standing with them even if they can't be there. Also please give us money because money actually helps a lot.

I had never heard of Snopes until now so thank you!

Presented a conference today with a few super mjr names in my field. apparently i nailed it.

Also, this is a convening of a two other conferences. Everyone in white collars and laptop cases is so bizarre. Only a few folk wore color (me, bright green) - yay for art history!

Well.  In the spirit of "pick up, deep breath, prepare for the future":

Got a job offer today from a local(ish) long-term care facility.  Currently on a per diem basis, so not fully hired in with the benefits of their union or anything, but it's that foot in the door to transition from restaurant to institutional cooking.

Also hey for a while I'll probably still have time to write scathing letters to congress and shit.  Never done that before should probably learn how.

I don't know if I should blame turning 31, being pregnant, or just plain being exasperated, but I am absolutely sick of all the whining people do about preventative medicine. Two things I repeatedly run into because of the pregnancy thing:

"Why should I get a flu shot? It's not even 100% effective!"

Because some of the flu's side effects include DEATH. And you getting vaccinated can help someone who can't be vaccinated avoid catching it, too. Because it is a nearly painless poke in the arm that you can get for cheap or even free. Because even if it's not 100% effective, it's usually north of 60% effective and that is a 2/3 better chance of you avoiding the flu. Because even if you catch one of the 40% of strains not covered, it can help prevent the most serious side effects which, didn't I say this already, include DEATH. Because your baby can't be vaccinated but if you get the vaccine, you pass antibodies on to help them when they're born. Because your baby could die of the flu. Because pregnant women are at high risk of contracting the flu to begin with AND their consequences are more severe.

"The gestational diabetes test is so awful. Why should I have to do it? I don't have diabetes!"

Because it's called GESTATIONAL diabetes for a reason - it's something that manifests while you are gestating, and it is your body's poor reaction to changes. There may be additional risk factors that up your chances of having it, but GD can and does effect women who are otherwise 100% healthy and "not at risk." Because the test takes 1 fucking hour of your time, you drink a drink and sit in a waiting room before having one little vial of blood taken, and that's it. Because if you DO have GD, and you don't know, the complications for your fetus include DEATH. If that's not enough for you, the most common side effect of GD is Giant Fucking Baby and that's going to tear the shit out of your insides.

WHY ARE WE ARGUING ABOUT THIS STUPID SHIT?

I'm not even getting on the general anti-vaxx rant, these things don't even fall under that umbrella (except for the people who complain about the stuff in the flu shot to which I say, guess what, they also make versions without that stuff even though that stuff is proven to not cause harm anyway). These are simple diagnostic/preventative measures that take virtually NO time, NO effort, NO money, prevent serious side effects (have I mentioned DEATH yet??) and... what, you can't fucking be inconvenienced? FUCK. YOU.
