Idun: agreed.  It's not a "hoax" in any sense - he put some glasses on the floor, and folks looked at it as art, and there you go.  It's art.  You don't need photographic evidence of the Art Fairy sprinkling Art Pixie Dust on the glasses to turn them into art.

At a very basic level, I like to say that the question, "is it art?" is not very helpful.  Art isn't stuff.  Art is the interaction between people and stuff.  You answer the question when you ask it.  Art is Tinkerbell.  Are you clapping your hands?  The basic question should be, "is it good art?"  And then you can go bash your head into the wall figuring out what "good" means.
Rocky: you do know what an A-bomb is, right?
Bullwinkle: A-bomb is what some people call our show!
Rocky: I don't think that's very funny...
Bullwinkle: Neither do they, apparently!

He is 17, so I I figure he will probably think much of himself much the same way most 22 year olds do of their 17 year old self.

When I am not deliberately trying to josh you though, yeah I am pretty much with you Idun?

I don't think what it does and what he says it critiques vs how he argues that it does are really in synch.

To his credit at least he didn't disrupt an existing exhibit to do it.

I left a copy of FF7 on the floor of a modern art museum and it still wasn't art

Yeah but that's in France.  In France only things from France are art.  Everything else is something to be peed on.

As it happens the Art of Video Games exhibit did, in fact, feature FFVII as one of it's Playstation era games.

What a perfect followup with another awful article. Him & the TED fellow's definition (Wikipedia? Really?) look at "art" in a Euro-vacuum and also conflates the literature arts with the visual arts and thank you for sharing because this is where art historians try to share practical wisdom and and and

Right, I've always told my students that the definition of (visual/fine) art is its very definition. What -is- unique about the current state of (un)fine art is that it routinely deals with identity crises because people are unsure (or ambivalent) about its commodity status.

So Ebert argues that all of these lofty weighted "artists" in history, ie famous poets, are great due to some inherent value in their medium, without acknowledging the processes of inculcation of which vidya games haven't been afforded. Video games have always been a gesamtkunstwerk, just as architectural church programs have always been a sum-of-all things experience, just like Alexander Calder wanted folk to perform and play music while his mobiles twirled. I'd rather not ask either question for video games though, as it only deals with the identity of things.

He walked that statement back many years later, admitting he didn't know enough about modern games to make that judgement.

Listening to feedback  what a shitlord

Ebert had his ups and downs, even though I disagreed with him as a whole it isn't like there wasn't something of interest to his argument.

Was he right?  I don't think so.  Do I think there is a grain of truth to how fragile the nature of art that requires audience participation is at any given moment?  Absolutely.

Games have an even higher level of audience participation than most other artforms, so it absolutely does require the player to be on board with it and taking part for it to work.

It is much more a statement on the medium (strengths and weaknesses) than anything more and I for one am glad that was at least a discussion point once.  It got me thinking about how utterly unapproachable a lot of our art can be to those that aren't absolutely immersed in games.

It is a shame it involved us fucking nerds shitting in our hands and throwing it around the place then jerk each other off.

As you may know, anything that casts doubt on video games as the most important thing in the entire world must be attacked.  To do otherwise would endanger the shitty bubble for sad people who have nothing to define themselves by except the media they consume.

Congress needs to ban guns again, forever. And poorly constructed arguments with no footnotes gets posted on the Internet without a comments section? The NRA force is strong.

If people constantly asked themselves the question, "is this a good idea?" there wouldn't be an IotD thread.

A very interesting court transcript about a man who wishes to fire his public defender because of unwanted sexual advances.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

He also went on the news this morning to basically admit the whole Vote Leave line about redirecting the 350 million pounds per week GB pays into the EU to the National Health Service instead was a big lie and will never happen. So yeah, I think he's leapfrogged Mitch McConnell.
