In a ballsy move rivalled only by their decision to sit on the Fantastic Four rights, Fox has greenlit a sequel to the Assassin's Creed movie that nobody wants.

Before it even released?

Here is hoping they do AC4 ripping off Pirates of the Caribbean and it tanks so that two cash in trends die in one movement.

Weren't they also the clever, clever folks who greenlit a Fantastic Four sequel before that released as well only to have to quietly withdraw it after the movie tanked?

And when said movie tanked they instead shuffled it's funding over to a Deadpool sequel... Deadpool, at the time, having not yet released.

I mean when it was actually a massive success they doubled down and really loudly shouted that news rather than it being pieced together from an internal memo, but y'know.

Truthfully though the problem I think is that the FF don't really translate well to movies, serialized adventure stories are more their speed.  But damn it'd be nice to get Doom as an Avengers foe or something.

I've been trying to shy away from political schadenfreude stuff. Trump is getting kinda scary, y'know?  But this is just too much.  The multifaceted derp on display is a miracle of banality.

For a little chronology:

1. Trump assistant shoves Breitbart reporter
2. Breitbart reporter recounts being shoved.
3. Trump campaign denies denies denies.
4. Breitbart runs a front-page piece saying Trump was right.  Seriously!
5. WaPo reporter who eyewitnessed it corroborates; (inconclusive) video and audio of the incident appear.
6. Reporter, and her editor, resign from Breitbart.
7. New editor mocks outgoing editor in extremely personal terms.
8. Someone with half a braincell decides maybe that was a bad idea?
9. Everyone learns a lesson.
10. Just kidding about 9.

EDIT: a timeline of the ongoing derpsplosion.

Conservatives seem to be on a trans people can't go to the bathroom safely rampage (a bill was just shot down in Tennessee too, which is at least good news), despite literally no evidence that trans people being in bathroom of their identified gender does anything except make a marginalized group of people feel safe.

(Of course, rapists in bathrooms fables tends to exist to deny that most rapes happen by people you know, not scary people hiding in dark alleys/ dark restrooms anyway...)

How can you have so little understanding of the insurance exchanges and be a sitting Supreme Court Justice?  Boggles my mind.  I've been thinking this for a while, but this exchange really cements it: Alito is an intellectual lightweight.

They have no idea how health insurance works. The idea that it's reasonable for someone to carry one general insurance plan and a second plan just for birth control, and that that wouldn't be a trainwreck, is just mind-boggling for anyone who has ever had to change jobs or fill out a form at a doctor's office. Jesus Christ. It's one step away from "Obamacare is unconstitutional because fleeble norb yogurt racecars."

I thought Scalia was vastly overrated and intellectually dishonest.  I never thought he was stupid.  I...am not so sure about what remains of Team Conservative.

I haven't done any deep looking at his record, but as far as I have read, seems like a fine jurist to me, and I would be happy to see him on the Supreme Court.  Naturally the Senate should confirm him.  Their arguments to the contrary would be laughable if it weren't so damn serious.

All that said...Alito's know-nothingism - and to various extents the paternalism you see from all four of the current conservatives - has helped convince me of something I didn't believe before: it is critical that the Supreme Court have members with varied life experiences, and the Court is not going to have what it truly needs in order to function at its very best without nominating a slew of minorities and women.  People who have experience with private insurance.  People who are attuned to - and interested in - the realities of poor communities. People who have the personal experience to see why stripping a 13-year old girl might be a little traumatic.  The list goes on.

Interestingly, I think that second paragraph is an argument against Merrick since his background is fairly similar to the other justices in terms of background and education. Of course, that's not the argument that is being put forth...

From what I've read of past hearings, I've always thought that Alito was an under the radar terrible justice, but Scalia always overshadowed that.

Yeah, that's how I meant it. sorry for not being clear about that.

I agree with this roughly a million percent. Garland is a very accomplished jurist, but he represents the career ivory-tower judge/prosecutor path every Supreme Court justice tends to take. I'm really hoping we see Jane Kelly, a former public defender, on the court before long (she was supposedly on the shortlist for this spot, but Obama went for the super-safe choice).

Also, the court could really use a protestant or something (Current religious affiliations: 3 Jews and 5 Catholics).  Hasn't had one since Stevens stepped down.  Considering how white the court is, it's bizarrely unrepresentative of the majority in that respect.  And it could maaaaaybe use the perspective of a Christian whose version of religious liberty doesn't 100% revolve around what women can do - or more to the point can't can't can't - with their unmentionables.

Ok, I was expecting a high concentration of Jews.  But I'm kinda shocked that it's 5 Catholics instead of say...  none?  Seriously, isn't the US heavily Protestant?

Most of the US' catholics are east coasters.  The east coast is where we keep all our prestigious law schools.  That's the actual bias we're seeing, they're all from Harvard/Yale/etc so it's majority from the east coast.

Scalia was the only Justice who hadn't gone exclusively Ivy League too. He did his undergrad at Holy Cross, IIRC. Still East Coast, but gives you an idea of where SC Justices tend to come from. Both undergrad and law school in the Ivys.

EDIT: Georgetown. It was Thomas who went to Holy Cross undergrad. Still. Also remembering Kennedy went to Stanford undergrad. Oh well.
