fuck everything about this

Indeed. California, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania are the only states with five-plus universities availing either gender-neutral or trans-friendly restrooms. But the implementation is uneven. In many cases, such restrooms are in student/residential housing, which still sends the very familiar message to any non-hetero person: "do it at home, but our public spaces will not support you."

This is part of a gross act by state legislatures to pass down their conventional, and violent, morals at state universities. Private schools can obviously opt out. I'm thinking about how staff, LGBT students in North Carolina and faculty, are all pointing to the very clear fact that schools may be in jeopardy of Title IX funding. There are too many instances of similar acts of gender discrimination that fall silently under the radar, and alumni/ally silence is most certainly contributing to that.

Enforcing the observance of gender-neutral (or disgusting observance of male/female restrooms of which many are comfortable or compliant in using) has fallen into the hands of students for or against. This should all be illegal, yet it is always some of the fastest passing of policies that catch fire.

Quote from: said article
But Kagan’s questions register as irrelevant to Schowengerdt, for a pretty troubling reason: He argues that guilty people don’t deserve a speedy sentencing hearing because they are guilty. Under Schowengerdt’s theory, when a defendant has pleaded guilty, he has extinguished his speedy-trial right. Never mind that this conception of the Sixth Amendment would nullify its centerpiece for 95 percent of defendants, or that as many as 8 percent of people who plead guilty are innocent. Once you take a plea deal, your speedy-trial right is toast.

You keep telling us to have faith in humanity but then you remind us this guy exists and I just don't see it.

In the abstract, this is not crazy.  The 6th Amendment right to effective assistance of counsel, for example, only creates a remedy for defendants who are not obviously guilty - it's not enough that your lawyer slept through your trial; he also needed to have failed to introduce or investigate exculpatory evidence.  The exclusionary rule (that says evidence collected by the government in contravention of a defendant's 4th Amendment right against unreasonable searches and seizures) is applied to parties who are factually guilty, but only because that's the only way to ensure that the innocent will be protected as well.  I'd like for all of these protections to be more robust, but the fact of the matter is, under current Constitutional law, you really DO give up a lot of your rights by pleading guilty.

It's just...Alito is obviously wrong.  Because of facts.  That's the big problem.

And...I do have faith in humanity.  When my mother grew up in Arkansas, she went to a segregated school.  Our current legal system replaced the older legal system of trial by combat.  People used to wear bell bottoms on purpose.  We have come a long way.  I'm not one of those silver lining guys, and I don't believe life is just getting inexorably better all the time.  There are setbacks!  (See: Trump, Donald.)  But god damn.  We are going in the right direction.  I mean, within a year we're going to have HD virtual reality pornos.  What more evidence do you need than that?

In theory, but today he was more focused on throwing life preservers to the respondent's attorney.

(How bad must it feel to come before the highest court in the land, hear them bash your opponents constantly for the first half of argument, and then come to the podium and totally fuck up? I don't know, but that guy definitely does.)

The Overwatch thing nearly got me to make a reddit account to shout at people for being stupid.

Statement in the original post says "That pose is out of character for Tracer".

Reddit's response is "Oh I guess people can't wear revealing clothes omg oprpessing women's sexuality she is just wearing leggings women wear yoga pants all the time nowadays"

Because the criticism is about the character standing in a stock male gaze pose (Tits and arse present!) that is actually physically painful unless you are super flexible at which point its just stupid uncomfortable.  yes thats literally putting the character in a burka.

fuck off internet

Don't forget, Gref. Kaplan and his team were totally, 100% on board with that pose, absolutely, but this one forum post forced them to compromise their artistic integrity.

I don't even know how to contextualize the butt pose thing.  Since they just apparently removed a jerking off joke at around the same time, it seems more like "orders from on high to clean the game up a bit" than "oh we suddenly realized that the character we designed from scratch wouldn't do this one sexy pose."  It's their game, scrubbing butt poses is their prerogative, but it kinda feels like a made-up reason.

p.s. this is not me arguing for more butt poses or bemoaning some bullshit artistic principles bullshit.  this is me griping about Blizzard corporate culture.

What the hell spurred all these religious freedom bills? Why are many still tax exempt? Why is a religious freedom bill framed by Christian beliefs allowed to stand and be argued? Why are states allowed to pass legislation they know damn well they cannot evenly monitor? Other Southern states aren't much better, but they need to treat MS like NC more recently. Jesus, I always make sure to never stop in MS if I don't have to, and it is because of the people. Also telling that their birthrate is down.

Don't you understand? You can't have poor Christians being FORCED into accepting other people's beliefs! That'd be horrible and completely against what Jesus taught, which was certainly "be assholes to everyone not Christian."

North Carolina has the university triangle, which is the economic engine of the state and trying to attract interest, particular from biotech firms.

Mississippi will always be a complete shithole that nobody will care about.

Like you said: you always make sure to never stop there already, so how will you boycott a place you already avoid?

Edit* disclaimer: things in my head (no, do not quote this Grefter)

I am not familiar with MS's trademark businesses, but Jim's article offers a couple footsteps of an entry into the lack of business backlash. Not sure how I could impact that, but research, research, research. You don't have to be in the specific place to boycott it, but the first thing that pops into mind are the travel bans that cities are enacting towards North Carolina. Same could be done there. I wonder who they rely on for other goods. I always see semi trucks and imagine there's several Ryders, Roehls, Schneiders etc. that can place pressure as a national company, etc.

I don't stop because I always seem to travel solo through there and metal detectors/armed cops at gas stations are totes intimidating. I imagine I could go to MS after moving back to Atlanta this summer, and I would if I had a plan or allies to group with.
