Hmmm...nothing is super standing out to me this week, a bunch of songs that I like, but don't jump out to me.  Let's see if something stands out to Gref/Alex (or anyone else that wants to comment, of course).  I am also considering grabbing a song from last week.

DJ Khaled/Rihanna - Decent, doesn't stand out, yeah.  Has some nice parts, doesn't really assemble them, just lets things ride.

Cellar Darling - This reenactment of the Alamo has a lot more lesbians than I remembered.  Feels kinda trashy and doesn't progress much in music or visuals... but also has a rich sound and a tone that is super fanservice to me.  Relaxing.  Had a decently fun time with it.  Probably my pick.

In This Moment - This remake of Roots has Kunta Kinte being a lot edgier than I remembered.  Also a good sound, though the lyrics are overdoing it a bit.  Even though I liked it, I felt done with it after a couple of minutes.

Papa Roach - Eh.  I was like "this is a cool intro, but when does the song start?  okay a series of intro hype riffs?  ... wait, is this really all there is to the song?"

Diamante - Was okay.  Didn't stand out.

Mystic Knight Rayearth - Was okay.  Didn't stand out.  The youtube comment reinterpreting it as a horror movie theme is on point, though.  I liked the later sections but the first three minutes are just too slow and bare to do much for me.

Cellar Darling gets a thumbs up from me, the rest eh exist.

Cellar Darling > DJ Khaled > In This Moment > Diamante > MKR > Papa Roach

Hmmmm...yeah, Alex is only really liking Cellar Darling, which is a song that kind-of just existed for me.  No real consensus between us, think I'm going back to last week.

This feels like probably an objectively strong week, but at the same time there's nothing that super stands out from the pack for me.

Jang Jin Young - As predicted, this is not standout to me, but decent.  High quality vocals.  Not much else to say on it.

Tharja - Hits my guilty pleasure personal preferences well.  Takes a long time to get where it's going, I wished for a big chorus earlier, but the payoff does arrive in time.  Good stuff, good music good singing achieves the tone it's looking for etc.

Lucy Camp - Also quite good.  "Relentless" is the adjective that comes to mind.  Basically a rap, but strong stuff.

Nothing More - Strong chorus, not much else notable.  Good, but this week's strong so it's going slightly under the rest of the pack for me.

Taemin - Fun video, lots of spectacle.  Stereotypical epic jpop but not in a bad way.

Dzeko - 1:10 drop.  Standard stuff, not really my fave.

MC's overview spot on as usual.  This is all fine and mostly comes down to personal preferences in tone/genre/style, though I think there is more defined split between my top and bottom 3.

Tarja > Taemin > Lucy Camp > Jang Jin Young > Nothing More > Dzeko

Well, Alex and I have the same top 3, but reverse ordering on them (I'm Lucy Camp > Taemin > Tarja).

Which is like 3+1 vs 2+2 vs 1+3 three way tie.

Watched the videos to see if this adjusts my opinion on any of them...I think Tarja is still third.  Maybe Taemin moves up, cause it does have a really strong video.

Hmm...not sure.

EDIT: well, posted a poll on a random GameFAQs forum, Taemin won by a lot.  Going with that then.

It's a vacation week.  This means I had fewer days at work listening to music...but also means that there was almost no American music released this week (a Katy Perry Nicki Minaj track, that's about the only one I cared about, although not quite enough to make the top 6).  So...there might still be top quality stuff in the top 6, but the lower end will probably be pretty low.

hyolyn - Exists.  I kinda tuned out fast, standard pretty girls dancing song.

up10tion - Exists.  I kinda tuned out fast, standard pretty boys dancing song.  I did like the vocals, which is a point for it over hyolyn.

ye banished privateers - Huh, cool stuff.  I respect what they're going for, though it's not my cup of tea so I can't comment very well on it.

Edguy - http://kawaiikochan.moe/image/162595700361  Was fine.  Relies a lot on the lyrics and video, they're good though.

Fredde Le Grande vs Ian Carey - Party track, drop at 1:04.  Somewhat better than the average party track?  Not something I'm gonna remember a week from now though.

Favourite - Whew, the title and beginning had me worried but this quickly pulled into doing interesting stuff.  Cool video, takes some risks with the production, fairly unique style, I'm in.  Good stuff.

Yeah, not a tremendously strong week.  Easy to rank though.  Clear winner and runner up, and the other four struggle to pass a basic "will I remember anything about this track 1-2 weeks down the line?"  Edguy comes the closest.

Favourite > ye banished privateers > Edguy > up10tion > hyolyn > Fredde

Hmm, instead of pulling from a previous week, I may pull from ahead of the time window for this week and pick the new Kesha song.  Song is easily  worth picking, has tons to write about, and if I wait till next week, it'll be all over the radio by then.

Forgot to post after I listened while doing stuff so the short is I like ye Banished Privateers most because I like sea shanties.  Favorite does some good stuff with it's synth chords and edguy is funny in how nonsense it is and fight for second/third.

Macklemore - I dig it, but that's probably projection of remembering my grandparents.

Rings of Saturn - its eh, its fine.  The internet is in love with these guys and they are just kind of okay I think.  I am biased because they get compared with Aversions Crown a bit and I am obviously biased in favour of AC, but I do think AC have stepped further out in their album from this year than Rings of Saturn have with this track.  There is something to be said to staying true to the genre that you made yourself in, Rings of Saturn is pretty pure grindcore/metalcore from top to bottom, but I am in to metal for more than just that genre and I am a huge fan of some of the more post production and stuff that blew up in break down heavy music a few years ago.  Overall not sure how much is my own biases and how much of it is anything else though.

In Motive - 's alright. It is squeaky clean as fuck, which as you will see in my ratings isn't really reaching particularly high this week.

Kiesza - This is also pretty clean.  Its nice just kinda chill background stuff that I wouldn't turn off, but I wouldn't really actively seek out.

Jennifer Lopez - Is Jennifer Lopez.  I still just don't understand.  Its fine, just I never understood the appeal.  This isn't "I am not the target audience so can't comment" and more "I literally don't understand this is just completely alien to me".

Stray from the Path - This is my pick.  Of course this was my pick, this was always going to be my pick.  Yes it is super aggressive.  Yes what it preaches can be counter productive.  Yes Nazi Punks Fuck Off is still the most relevant anthem in the history of modern music.  It was right when the Dead Kennedy's sang it 35 years ago, it is true to this day.

Quickie due to busy weekend.

Macklemore - Video's very inspiring, song a little less so, it's okay though.

Rings of Saturn - I enjoyed this, but not sure how it'd go over with general audiences.  Then again apparently the internet loves this band?  Anyway, it didn't seem very out-of-groove for the genre.  I liked some of the more melodic influences later in the song though.

In Motive - What Grefter said.

Kiesza - What Grefter said.

J Lo - I see the appeal (it's sex, so no wonder Grefter doesn't) but it still doesn't do much for it.

Stray From the Path - Is good.  What Grefter said.

Nothing wowed me but mostly was solid.

Rings of Saturn > Stray From the Path > Macklemore > Kiersza > In Motive > J Lo

I should have disclaimered that Rings of Saturn thing with fans of Metalcore on the internet love it.  Wider audiences don't really care about the genre outside of things like Parkway Drive and Bring Me the Horizon.

Top for me was Rings of Saturn with In Motive and Macklemore being also pretty high.

Which...

punching Nazis gets #1 from the Communist, #2 from Alex, somewhere around 4-6 from me.  (overall 7 or so).

Rings of Saturn gets #1 from me and Alex, guessing about 3rd from Grefter. (Overall 5 or so)

Macklemore gets a bunch of 2s and 3s (overall 7 or 8).

I mean, I think Macklemore would probably hit it best with my family just because of the grandma imagery.  On the other hand, the last...probably three weeks have been quite well-received, so I think it's fine to throw a curve ball.

Welp, this was one of those ridiculous weeks where there were just 20+ songs that I was considering for the top 6.  (Casualties include PSY, Kid Rock, Superfruit, Lindsey Stirling, Rag'n'bone man, melodysheep, Arcade Fire...).  Anyway, top 6:

Kesha - Was okay.  Nice groove.

VoicePlay feat. Rachel Potter - Solid, enjoyable, well performed.

Arch Enemy - But Miku told me the world was hers!  Cheesy metal, weird combos, I liked it.

PYRMDS - Bit less my speed.  Nice but I wouldn't seek it out.

Royal Blood - Not sure I got this one.  Nice guitar, otherwise not much impression.

Frost Tears - Also good.  Weird switch to the solo section but dug it.  Nice vocals.

Mostly all close, nothing in particular blowing me away.

Frost Tears > VoicePlay > Arch Enemy > Kesha > Royal Blood > PYRMDS

BlasterJaxx. The break is at where you expect, but is also the kind of party track you know I like.  Instruments/vocals that you don't normally hear in western pop music (the chanting here) and clearly synthesizers for your bass and rhythm lines.  Slow enough BPM that you could hard dance or shuffle to it.   So yeah I rate it higher than it probably deserves

Exit Eden - hey having four singers up front instead of using back up/session singers or just layering recordings of your lead singer is cool for female vocalist Lead symphonic metal when all your instrumentalists are male.  I mean it probably makes touring a nightmare (8 or 9 people?) and it is very much like K-Pop or a pop super group (not meant derisively).

Song is pretty good too.

Kinda and Lotus - Hey yeah like that!  That was what I meant.  Very 90s pop side of Nu metal in its ballads.  I prefer Exit Eden though this hits some nostalgia buttons.

Also ayyyyylmao light me up erry day

The Doubleclicks - hmmmmm this might be the pick, but there is too much to talk about that isn't why I like it.  I know the tune is from somewhere else, but I can't place it.  My brain was saying Red Solo Cup, which if it was this would be Cleveland Steaming all over it because fuck that song and a take on it for a new generation would have been smart.

But at heart this is all essentially, in spite of not droning,  a way of saying me too thanks/same/came here to say THIS.

Also is there an homage version of Bartender please Estrogen in there?

Sofi Tukker - Okay this is better than Blasterjaxx, a bit cleaner synth tones, way dirtier and trashy lyrics.  Exactly what I like.  I am torn, this rates really high.  It is pretty much exactly what you expect, dances less, but is way better ear worm.

This also absolutely is played after you put on a pair sunglasses while indoors.

Charlie XCX - I think in another week this would have rated higher and that isn't just because I am playing Dream Daddy.  It is a a fun dumbish track, but I don't think goes too high on the list this week.

The Doubleclicks > Sofi Tukker > Blasterjaxx > Exit Eden > Charlie XCX > Kobra and the Lotus

Blasterjaxx - Good stuff, very multipurpose, agree w/grefter on instruments/chanting being great.

Exit Eden - Good singing, good music.  Feels like it's lacking a little bit of a grab, and the lyrics don't quite match the tone I expected.  Minor quibbles though.  Stuck with me well.

Kobra and the Lotus - Similar to Exit Eden, less musically impressive but more cohesive.

The Doubleclicks - This is one of those hit or miss, trying to be "relatable," identify with it or don't songs and I don't.  I see how it could be top place if I did.  But I don't and there isn't much draw in the music.  Ignore my vote on this one if your read on the column audience is that it'll be relatable to them, though.

Sofi Tukker - This completely bounced off me without making an impression.  30 seconds after listening, trying to think of things to type, I can barely remember it except it said fuck a lot.

Charli XCX - Good chorus, good video, not much else to it.  Dream Daddy's relevance gives it a decent showing this week, but yeah there's better.

*checks Grefter's ranking*  Huh.  Usually we're more in agreement than this.  Interesting selections this week!

Blasterjaxx > Exit Eden > Kobra and the Lotus > Charli XCX > The Doubleclicks > Sofi Tukker

Yeah, I've been delaying making the final pick here, as there isn't much of a gap in how much I like all of them either.

Might just go with Doubleclicks for writeup bait.
