Listening and following these on my way home from work. Going to edit in a post then, but warning, my opinions this week are garbage and show my taste in music is actually trash.
Lady Gaga - I am going to keep up this message that the moment she puts out an acoustic/piano album I will buy it. This is pretty schlocky feel good stuff, but that fits the subject matter perfectly. This is pretty easily the best thing this week, but there is more to come.
Liam Payne, Rita Ora - Yeah I don't like this, the beat they are singing over just feels like it is trying to push in over the top of the singing which feels completely incongruent with the beat which feels like
The Beat Is Technotronicoceans of slumber - So when are we starting up that oWoD campaign with alexchan? Because this sounds exactly like what we have on in the background constantly. Or mood music back for when you were working on a White Wolf IP. Also not gonna lie a huuuuuuuge part of me wants to pick this for the week because of how fucking amazing that hair is. I don't give 2 shits if it isn't real that looks amazing and the whole get up is great. It is a kind of metal I don't really drift towards but its a pretty good representative for its subgenre.
331Erock - Okay I learned something today. I was going to originally say that this is a good cover of the track from Full Throttle, but that it sounds just like a knock off version of something else. Then googling to try and jog my memory for what it was, I find out that the OST for Full Throttle is licensed music from an 80s hard rock/punk band. So... it is less a knock off of anything other than just representative of the genre it is from and is a good cover.
Okay I still don't know what to do with that, but that is cool. The Gone Jackals is the band for reference and they might be worth a retrospective look.
pink - So this is a track about overcoming from an artist I have tons of respect for both as a person and an artist. It is deeply emotional and she is pretty damn good on this and it isn't even out of character for her to do a big ballad on ablums.
I don't know why I don't really dig Pink. She is really good and keeps that torch for more of a poet/singer alive better than anyone else and she does it with a pop twist. She just doesn't speak to me quite as strongly as some of the other things like this. I would guess it is that I like the performative nature of things like The Long Blondes or even Amy Winehouse, but... sometimes those Winehouse tracks are performative and like the closest thing that I like is Hole - Letter to God and that straight down the line open and honest. Maybe it is I need some layer of allegory or abstraction? I dunno.
follow the cipher - And this is why I am garbage. This is my favourite thing this week. It is almost entirely on how fucking wonky and bad that synth tone sounds. Then it is over the top of standard breakdown metal with blasting kick drums and oh my fucking gods I love it. Like the song is like a pretty okay example of the style. It is entirely that synth tone that elevates it in noteworthiness for me (though to be fair it is a genre I do listen to regularly).
