I didn't think Alex was going to reply that quick, so I edited in a bunch of things over the top of just saying Florence + the Machine because well of course that was my pick.

Jupiter > Elza > Dillon Francis > Halestorm > Yellow Claw & Sofia Reyes > Golden Child

Part of me wants to say to pick Dillon Francis so I see you try and explain Fortnite to your family.

Elza is pretty fun in the same way all that kind of rap has been.  I like taking back Catch me outside.  Haltestorm, Yellow Claw & Sofia Reyes and Golden Child all feel a bit more flat.

Jupiter though?  After the weird 15 seconds of nothing (is there a different regional thing of putting your cross promotion up front in videos or something?) there is nothing bad I have to say about it.  I love all the fashion in here.   I love Japan doing speedy hair metal stuff.  I love that the entire film clip is Sierra/Castlevania as fuck.  Its just all around top of the week for me in every way.  It is like what if Dragonforce was good and also filled with Draculas.

Dillon Francis - Good beat.  Not really my vibe, though.

Elza - Same vein as Dillon Francis but nicer on my ears.

Jupiter - Easy top.  Falls a bit flatter later on but yeah.

Halestorm - Feels pretty stock/formulaic, went back to Jupiter.

Yellow Claw & Sofia Reyes - Was digging but loses its energy at a break around 1:50

Golden Child - Exemplifies this set, it's all "pleasant but eh."  Could hear this in a TV commercial.  Fine but nothing that stands out that I want to highlight.

As Grefter said, pretty easy set.

Jupiter > Elza > Yellow Claw/Sofia Reyes > Golden Child > Halestorm > Dillon Francis

Hmm...interesting.  Jupiter was 5th or 6th for me.  (Dillon Francis was #1 by a mile, although I was expecting this would be my own personal taste thing, kind of like how I love Marisa Stole the Precious Thing).  Jupiter did stand out as different, though; should probably listen to the double 1st.

Well, I have a definite favourite this week, but there's also some definite grefterbait here, so we'll probably have a spread of opinions.

Riton, Kah-Lo - Catchy, in that okayish zone.

Christine and the Queens - Catchier, very soothing vocals.  This is in the range where I'd vote for the music, but the video takes a very uncomfortably rapey swerve.  That is... well clearly intentional but ruined my enjoyment anyway so... idk.

Omnium Gatherum - Also in the smooth and soothing category.  For me, anyway.  Not a huge standout but not bad.

Korpiklaani - Extremely Finland.  Dig it.

Charlie Puth - I kept waiting for it to get to the "Are you okay, are you okay Eddie?" part.

Kristen Collins - Hmmmmmm.  Wins.  Liked it a lot.  Good song.  Good singing.  Stuck in my mind much more than these others.  Listened to the original and prefer this version too.

Mid-upper week.  Top 4 all in the good winner range for me.

Kristen Collins > Korpiklaani > Omnium Gatherum > Christine and the Queens > Riton/Kah-Lo > Charlie Puth

Korpiklaani > Christine and the Queens > Omnium Gatherum > Riton, Kah-Lo > Charlie Puth

Riton, Kah-Lo - This is a kind of rap I have already said I dig in the past and yeah this I like a bit more than Alex it seems, I think it is better than Okayish, but it isn't like auto top or anything.

Christine and the Queens - This is fucking sick.  Like it is a mix of stuff that I can't quite put my finger on (probably because I type this up as I listen to another song).  First part felt like Daft Punk but then it flowed into something else with the rhythm line and I was trying to pick that, then I lost it and tried to pick what the vocals reminded me of.  It doesn't really matter though, I really dig it.

Omnium Gatherum - This is also exactly a kind of metal I like down to the growly rough vocals and the kind of thing it is.  It is like Amon Amarth but less good, but I reeeeaallly love Amon Amarth.

Korpiklaani - But this is also what I am expecting is the Grefter bait.  Korpiklaani are constisently in my top picks and this is no different.   This one is especially mellow for them.  Like this isn't even metal drumming like is my usual Melodic stuff is actually metal.   If it wasn't an electric bass and a kit drum I could easilly just call this folk stuff to be honest.  But whatever it is still my shit.

Charlie Puth - I liked the first 5 seconds and then everything but the lead guitar riff was happening.  I hoped it was gonna be some cool fast rock at first and then it was oh nevermind.  It is some polished snooze pop in the year where that is not even a thing any more because everything got replaced with sad pop.

Kristen Collins - I like this a bit less than Alex.  There is some stuff to it, but its just less Grefter.
NO MORE POKEMON - Meeplelard.

Hmmm...ok, so my #1 by far by faaaaar was Riton and Kah-Lo.  Which is...fifth from Gref/Alex.

Korplikaani is something like #1, #2, and #2, so that would be the safe pick.

And advice has been fairly successful recently (much to my surprise my mom liked Jupiter).

But on the other hand, I reeeeealy liked Kah-Lo.  So...how much do I disregard good advice with a good recent track record?

Hmm...another question--how are we doing on variety?  Last week was metal (Jupiter).  Week before was Florence vs The Machine (also kind-of metal range like Korplikaani).  I don't think I have picked any music from sub-Saharan Africa yet.  On the other hand I haven't picked Korplikaani yet, and I'm not even sure if I've picked a single song in Finnish.  Hmmm.....

Sabaton - Cute idea, but doesn't really work for me as a standalone.  The lyrics are written with metal in mind and sound repetitive in this form.

Architects - Works much better as a cover, the piano brings out some new emotiveness.  Kinda standard emotive piano song territory, doesn't stand out, but avoids any feeling of "coverness"

Ariana Grande - Compelling, at least on a first listen.  Might grate after a few plays but certainly draws my attention.  I don't really know what to say about it!

Mamamoo - Decent stuff.  Pretty much what I think of when I see Mamamoo.

Robin Thicke - The good parts of this are the classical clips.

Ciara - I like the percussion... doesn't quite hit the right beat for me though.  I keep hearing Macklemore's Thrift Store instead.

Macklemore - Not really my thing.  Started off okay but then ehh.

Top three well above the rest for me.

Ariana Grande > Mamamoo > Architects > Sabaton > Ciara > Robin Thicke > Macklemore

Amber Liu - Good humor, catchy tune.  I'm a fan.

Muse - Very similar to the Amber Liu.  Better music, worse lyrics/humor.

Bebe Rexha - Feels like I've heard this song before.  I'm a beast, I'm a lover, I'm a something, I'm a mother...  It was okay.

Black Mirrors - Nice kinda country-metal thing here?  A bit repetitive but I liked the guitar enough to put it high anyway.

Rews - Was okay.  Good guitar.  I'm taking Black Mirrors if I want guitar though.

Thomas Anders - Very Euro.  Nice but unimpressive.

A fairly close pack, but straightforward.

Amber Liu > Black Mirrors > Rews > Muse > Bebe Rexha > Thomas Anders

Will need to post these tomorrow; forgot to send myself the song list tonight, and the artists are obscure enough that I don't remember all of them.  (I think it's a strong week though).

Rews - Good stuff, easy listening mood piece.  Not much "out of the ordinary" but a good groove.

Daveed diggs & Rafael Casal - Similar to Rews in the "easy listening rap" groove.  It's fine.

Boatti - Also good and more up my alley.  I want the extended mix of this.

Villain - Not bad, more music to it than DD&RC.

Valshe - Good japanese style stuff, another style I hear a lot of casually.  Enjoyed but not really standout enough musically to be a rank consideration for me.

Bibio - ... oh.  Well.  I'm surprised to see this here, but I'm 100% behind it.  This ambient stuff is the genre I've been gravitating towards lately for streaming and general concentration and imagination.  Although short, this is very well crafted, meshes with the video well, and hits my brainwaves.

Bibio > Boatti > Villain > Valshe > Rews > DD&RC

Wow yeah, strong week.  Short comments because I have Evo and La Mulana 2 to get back to, but good stuff.  Very close pack, DD&RC is still in the range I would expect to be my 2nd or 3rd place most weeks.

Paloma Faith - Was okay, but didn't really resonate with me.  I don't know the proper musical term but it sounds intentionally lo-fi?  Not sure why they made that choice.

Beyond the Black - Standard metal song, enjoyed but doesn't stand out.

Le Butcherettes - Definitely scores all the artistic points, very interesting listen and watch.  Enjoyment, a bit less so, compared to the first time we had them up here.  There's a few really strong points and then a lot of auditory filler, for me?  But a strong contender.

Caleb Hyles - Rare case where I'd actually listened to this myself ahead of its appearance on the list!  Good vocal work.  I don't have a strong attachment to the original though and I feel like that plays a big part in the intended enjoyment/angle.

Red Velvet - This... actually did a really good job at cheering me up.  What is this crazy world where cheerpop actually works as intended on me?  A lot lighter on the backing than other similar tracks too.  Pretty nice!

Aphex Twin - But this entire listening session has been colored by anticipation for Aphex Twin and it does not disappoint.  Like the whole creative process and brainwaves in a track here.  Once again this may not be for everyone but it is certainly for me.  There is a 3 act structure of buildup/collapse/rebuild and tons of rhythm and percussion and mmmmm just mmmm.

Solid top three for me.

Aphex Twin >>> Red Velvet > Le Butcherettes > Caleb Hyles > Beyond the Black > Paloma Faith

It was Le Butcherettes in a walk until Aphex Twin, but that is some seriously Aphex Twiny ass Aphex Twin.  He melts my brain still.

Le Butcherettes is really freaking damn good though.  Red Velvet is notable for how weird it all is.

Elle King > Lethal Bizzle > Omnium Gatherum > Kiesza > Crush > Caleb Hyles

I love how loud all the clothes in that clip are.   The top 4 all have a lot going for them though, but Elle King is a mix of loud and strong and distinct character and sound that I want.   Lethal Bizzle is all running on outrage and Lady Leshurr feature, but that is two strong things.   Kiesza gets lots of points for being kind of weird and a dance version of Phantom of the Opera is a cool idea, but it doesn't completely nail it in some way that would have elevated it, but not sure what it needed to tip it over (probably just a better audience than me for it).  Omnium Gatherum shreds and is a cool track that is emblematic of a kind of metal I like.

Crush is pretty damn good too and is solid, just didn't do heaps for me.

Caleb Hyles I guess shows that it isn't just Disney stuff I am not a super fan of that kind of cover, but *shrug*

Basick - Good backing for what it is, not at all bad to listen to, but as with most rap the emphasis is on the lyrics and going to be lost on people who don't understand the language.  I know a little bit of Korean, but the median person following the column probably knows zero, so that's a really high barrier.

Michael Schenker Fest - Maintains medium radio style energy throughout, didn't mind having it on, but didn't call me back.

Perfume - Reasonably pickable.  Video does a good job selling me on it, fairly high personal appeal.

Sindey Samson & Gwise - Break at exactly 1 minute, nice.  Extremely house.  Good beat to it.  Uh what else can I say... I do think it's a notable cut above the "average" break-at-1m-house-mix that shows up on these weeklies.  Would not be a bad winner at all.

David Guetta - Barely remembered this after it finished.  Others this week are better.

Yelle - Loved the early parts and vocals, but cooled on the later parts that just seemed to keep going and merge into general electro/house.

Pretty average field, nothing really sticks out to me.

SS&G > Perfume > Yelle > MSF > Basick > David Guetta

Huh, yeah, I also thought Sindey Samson & Gwise was a cut above the average generic house track.  I'm not sure if I can articulate why, though.

I was weirded out by the Zedd one, cause I think we've already done a cover of this song (by KHS I think?) but the music video for the original song wasn't out yet.  So I was listening to it like "I know this song...wait, no, this is different."  (Overall strong week though).
