I was really confused when my brain did that thing it does of mixing up Radiant Historia and Radiata Stories.  I mean I know Niu likes Tri-Ace stuff, but I didn't think it really got to that sexual a level.

Now it makes more sense.

I'll pitch three:

Boston, Massachusetts: It's pretty dope, an easy place to meet intellectuals and gamers, an okay place to afford rooms for rent but not homes, a great location other places with a Chinatown/Megabus trip, amazing libraries and museums and some really awesome funky local band musicians (listen to any Tune Yards recently?). But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Boston is not the place.

Austin, TX: Downtown area is the size of a fleck, but there's a lot of outdoor activities, live music everywhere, funky foodie developments, really interesting people who abuse the Keep Austin Weird slogan in a way that it is easy to socialize, great weather, gorgeous skies, gorgeous camping grounds, fresh water fucking pools everywhere. But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Austin is absolutely not the place. It is the #1 most expensive city in the South, it's experiencing intense gentrification at the moment, it's not pedestrian friendly, biking is okay but still noticeably deadly, it has way too many fucking conferences and events that seem to happen every week and roads on a poorly-designed road system get shutdown and fucks up locals lives, it's a blue place in a sea of red and unless you're working with some relocated silicon valley business you'll be paying more for less material quality. But Ranhat also lives there and that's great.

Atlanta, GA: A decent-sized city that's populated more in its metroarea, tons of different cuisines to choose from, perhaps too many activities going on to where it may seem like nothing is happening since folk are so dispersed, okay museums but great galleries, located within 5-6 hours of some pretty awesome cities in the south, great meat dishes, a confluence of colleges and recent influx of northerns that really mitigates Georgians "This is Trumpland!" signs, lots of affordable and expensive music events, lots of places to go that aren't packed so you can have a good amount of privacy. But if your main interest is the cost of living as an adult on a single income in a place elders of your stature could have in their economy, Atlanta is tolerable. You can still rent your own place in the city for what you would a room in a place like Austin or Boston, but a good chunk of money will leave your pockets if you commute by car everyday on the insane 6-lane highways around a 2 mile Grady curve that takes 30 minutes to pass. With planning though, your commuting life is gravy and sometimes lumpy gravy. I don't have a car, but grew up here since I was 11, and if public transit is a thing you're okay with, MARTA works.

Out of my list:
Place with the best coffee: Boston
Place with the best scenery: Austin
Place with the best apartments: Atlanta
Place with a visible and nice 30s+ community of professionals: Boston, Atlanta
Place where, were I single, I could date without misery: Atlanta/Austin
Place where, were I in a partnership and with child, I could afford vacations without thinking: Atlanta
Place where, were I adventurous, I could see and do a lot without repetition: Boston
Place with the best sports teams: ATLANTA UNITED ATLANTA UNITED, WE HAVE A NEW SOCCER TEAM AND THEY'RE ACTUALLY OK
Place where, were I to move there, I wouldn't have to relocate because of spiking housing costs: outer parts of Boston, Atlanta

Gotta stand up for Boston here: it is great for sports. TD Garden is a great place to take in games, Celtics are consistently worth watching, and contra national media, Boston-area sports fans are not reprobates.

Depends on what you do explicitly.  My area is Western PA-ish.  I love Pittsburgh - relatively cheap all things considered (depending on where you live), jobs won't be hard to find (again, depending on your background).  Weather is much like DC.  Lots of art, people are non-assholes.  Overall very solid area.  Traffic is much better than DC, but can still be bad.  Also, if you like sports, the Stillers, Penguins, and Pirates are all very popular.  Locally, Pitt, if you're big into basketball.  Not a huge sports guy myself, but Pittsburgh's a good place for that.

The place I work is Morgantown WV.  Very cheap to live there (decent apartments are 350$/month - $1000/month gets you a very nice condo or townhouse), close enough to the city (1.5 hours from Pittsburgh), very much a growing college town.  One of the fastest growing economies in the country, actually, and tons of healthcare jobs particularly.  People don't know how to drive (probably not much different than DC...), and they aren't as nice as Pittsburgh, but still overall good.

Austin has a lot of drawbacks. If one wouldn't come to LA due to traffic, I have trouble seeing Austin as a viable alternate (hideously bad urban design and road design, major freeway chokepoints across rivers that split major parts of the cities and as Dunie noted in a way, compliance with traffic laws (especially either red lights or stop signs- can't remember which) is notoriously poor). Its weather in the summer can often get pretty miserable (Virginia is humid but at least gets rain during the summers? Austin has pretty bad humidity even during drought).

Sister's dad passed away. Mum's dad died this year, and now my sister's dad. They've both lost a parent, one of the two most important people in their lives, and I've lost a grandfather, and both my father figures. My sister's dad and our mum were divorced but still on civil terms, and I also kept in touch, he was good to me. I think he also retained a soft spot for my mother so at least he was able to have the woman he had loved and his daughter by his side at the end although unfortunately I don't think he ever woke up since he was taken into hospital.

COPD again though currently it is unclear whether it was that or the infection which finished him off. Basically he'd been unwell the last week or so with a really bad infection, the other week he left the dog out all night and told my sister that it was the boys that did it (there were no boys), she went over to stay with him and he burst into her room at night shouting and saying the boys were making a noise and she was to sort them out. He had already been to see the doctor, but had got a wait and see response but once that happened with those two episodes my mum told my sister to get in touch with emergency services, and the doctor that seen him then gave antibiotics but also said her dad was to see her own doctor again, unfortunately the next time he saw his own doctor, the doctor apparently didn't really do anything again, sister also called them out on not reading her dad's notes from the other doctor, I don't even know if he was prescribed any more antibiotics, again it was more of a wait and see thing, he was still unwell this week .. I wanted to go see him but sister said he was still unwell ... I wanted to go this weekend anyway

Sister showed up at my door at ten am yesterday morning very upset saying her dad had been taken into hospital and she thought he was dying and she needed someone to look after the dog. The hospital had told her that the infection had gone on too long and there was nothing they could really do, it wasn't responding to treatment, so it was just a waiting game. Spent the day looking after the animals, feeding and tioleting (dog, and my cat) while waiting for news. Mum messaged me early evening saying Jim had gotten worse and she was staying the night at hospital with sister. I asked if I could come over but mum said she didn't think he would wake up and they didn't know for sure yet what was going to happen. Unfortunately received another message later at night saying he had passed away at around ten pm. After sister and mum had left the hospital that night they came to pick the dog up so sister could have him with her as comfort at night.

I am devastated for my sister, all I can do is be there for her in any way she needs.

Thanks super.

Funeral is on Monday.

The man quite frankly had had enough I think. After his stroke last year, and nearly losing his foot, and having toes amputated, and being in hospital again in January to have a bone which was sticking out, and the fact they had to revive him when he had those major operations, and his mobility being severely reduced from what it used to be, having to use a scooter to get around, and the CoPD on top of all that ... yeah. I guess he like my granddad decided to tell 2017 where it could stick it.

2017 seems have decided to be a bitch. My dad died in his sleep yesterday. I was telling my mom about how at every funeral dad kept us safe and hugged us and made us feel better.

I just have no words right now.

I feel like I'm perpetually interviewing for new jobs.

But, well, here we are again. Several companies in my immediate area and one big one up in Seattle, which would obviously necessitate moving.

So as usual DLCon depends on that. But it also depends on the new kidthing I've got.

Said kidthing is doing pretty well at daycare. My wallet, on the other hand, is definitely not. For what we're paying, we could rent her her own apartment. I hear that the government frowns upon leaving babies unattended, though, so we've decided to stick with the daycare for now.

I'm still not a baby person but every time she does something totally mundane I go all \o/ yay you! For example, the first best milestone was that she could look at me. Now it's that she can sit up assisted. I swear, if those were my level of standards in any other part of my life, everything would fall apart. But kidthing gets a pass. For now.

Those of you who were at DLC4, this may be upsetting to hear but...

Dukie: April 10th 2004 - May 4th 2017

I thought I was prepared for this moment since we saw it coming and when my brother told me he was on his last legs, I tried to mentally prepare myself, but walking into the house and seeing him lie there, in his usual pose, only motionless without breath...I couldn't help but tear up.  I'm still basically crying over it as we speak.

He was the second dog we owned, but first one I had to go through with seeing actually go (the first one was also old when we lost him, but he walked off the porch, uncharacteristically and we never saw him again; we believe he went off to die.  His story is something else, but won't get into that.  This happened about 9 months before we got Dukie), and I really just can't get over it.

You were an amazing dog and I will never forget you.  Brought so much joy and love to our family, and it's hard to imagine that I will never see you again.  You were more than just a pet, but actually were a part of our family.  You are irreplaceable, and I can only hope you are now in a better place.  Rest in Peace, my friend.

Been absent from both forums and (mostly) IRC for some time. I'm sorry for all the bad news everyone's had on this page. Ciato, I wanted to say something to you much earlier but just never caught you, and, I dunno, somehow saying something on Facebook felt trite. This is the first I've heard of all the other events, so you all have my sympathies.

~~~
It may surprise you, El-Cid, but I'd honestly say that Michigan, In the right places is a nice place to live. You pretty much want to avoid:
1)The rural areas
2)The dense urban areas
And you're gold. I've bitched a lot about my state in the past at various times, but remember I used to live in the Rural bits, where the closest not-rural bit was Port Huron. The cities people tend to remember exist in Michigan are Detroit and Flint, and while living anywhere in Flint is just about the dumbest or unluckiest thing you can do, the sub-urban areas surrounding Detroit are decent.
Where my state really shines, though, is the middle sized cities, and I've personally lived in two of them for extended periods of time. I really like my current city of East Lansing (Not to be confused with Lansing, which is also pretty OK, honestly). You have a very reliable bus service with unlimited rides for 35 dollars on a monthly pass. There's rapid growth going on, I'm watching several apartments, some condos, and what I think are two hotels going up from within walking distance of my house. It is a major college town. I am not mentally well. If I have major social problems, that is not a failing of my home state, it is a severe deficiency within myself. I see more mind-splittingly gorgeous young women on my daily commute to work every day than the poor bastard version of me that grew up Rural thought he'd ever see in a lifetime. This is only a slight hyperbole.
Kalamazoo housed me for my college years and it is a hip place. I was pretty much always able to find (good!) live bands if I wanted to go out. There are bars that cater to the college students, and somehow, the most "Collegey" of them all manage to stay to those, while there are a ton of other places where there would be single people of less "Dumbass kid" age hanging out. If you can't find something to do walking around downtown Kalamazoo at night, any given night, you're fucking bent. I managed to have a decent time most nights and I might be the most socially inept person I personally know. If you decide to NOT be a singular organism, kids that go to high school in the Kalamazoo Public School system get 4 years (or 130 credits) of college free tuition and mandatory fees.
I've never lived there, but Grand Rapids seems to be on every "Best cities to live in the US" list I've seen over the last several years. It's definitely a pretty city.
I can't put the best commentary on the Saginaw Area, honestly, because my semester at SVSU was an enormous, personal mistake. I DO know that Midland, Saginaw, and Bay City are all right next to each other and may as well be the same place.
The worst part about living in Michigan is the weather. Weather here is insane mirror-world weather, where it can jump from 25 degrees up to 80+ in under a week.
The flipside of the weather is the climate. Michigan is probably the safest place in North America. I can't say that as a for sure, 100% true thing, but i'd honestly be willing to make a small prop bet on it. Very rarely, we might get a tornado that actually hits something and does damage. Other than that, you have no natural disasters. The lakes just insulate the state from so much. About the worst possible weather is a really bad snow, and, all that lake generally makes the worst of it pile up on either side of us without actually hitting us too bad. The North East gets way more major snowstorms. Minnesota and Wisconsin will get hammered. The rest of the midwest will have way more, way more devastating tornadoes. The west coast has Earthquakes and Landslides, the Southwest has draughts and fires, and even the extremely placid Pacific Northwest still is within blastin' range of an active volcano. Afraid of climate change accelerating? I'm not. My state is goddamn fine. Sorry about your guys' water scarcity, brah. (or being consumed BY water, just not the potable kind)
Cost of living in the state is hilariously low. I'm annoyed I have the financial problems I currently do, but I have a slowly growing bank account on a <15 dollar an hour job, and I own my own house. If I didn't get screwed out of my unemployment check a few years ago, and I didn't follow that up with an uninsured trip to the Emergency room and then follow THAT up with a surgery that took a month to recover from where I had to have daily nursing care, I would be in extremely comfortable financial shape. It's amazing the difference between "Broke" and "Able to consider major life purchases" in this country. I think Michigan, a living wage is considered about 10 bucks? Slightly more?
