Wild Arms XF line counts

[Dark Holy Elf]

Inspired by someone on GameFAQs doing the same thing with Ace Attorney (a far bigger project), I've decided to collect line count data on games, because data collection is interesting! Or it is to me, anyway. And I figure if anywhere in the world was nerdy enough to have other people appreciate this, it would be here.

Anyway I chose Wild Arms XF because I'm replaying it anyway, and it's on the text-heavy side for an RPG. So, here we go. Lines by character, by chapter. Some clarifications:

-Each separate textbox counts as a line. Textboxes generally contain around 1 to 30 words.
-Textboxes that don't contain any letters don't count. XF often uses punctuation marks, along with a change of facial expression, to note a pause, surprise, confusion, etc.
-I'm not collecting narration and tutorial lines. (There aren't many of the former.)
-I am including Labyrinthia's battle reports in her line count, as they're required text and delivered in character, even though they're obviously somewhat a gameplay convenience. They're about ~10 lines per battle, so I can estimate a Labby line count free of those if anyone cares.
-I'm not collecting lines of characters in towns, because that's too many bit characters for me to track (plus I don't feel like religiously checking for when town dialog changes). Exception: if the lines belong to a major character. This doesn't happen often.

I'll refer to major characters by their full names, and minor characters by the names the game uses for them (it often includes their title, which helps with remembering who the hell they are).

Before I started this I assumed Felius would be #3 but now it's pretty clear that's not going to be the case; Levin is going to rocket past him at this rate. Felius just doesn't like talking much!

I was reading this article about game script breakdown, not just by character, but by the -purpose- of the lines.

It reminds me a bit of your project here.

I'm curious what the breakdown would look like for WAXF vs. FF6 in this example.

As is, just looking at the by-character breakdown thus far, not sure what kind of conclusions can be drawn. Apart from 'Wow, a JRPG where most of the lines are spoken by female characters is probably pretty damn rare!'

I wonder if Tony will end up with more lines than Interceptor?

Only had time to skim the article, but yeah, that's interesting. Its quite different than this project, though: it only looks at NPCs (townsfolk etc.), whereas I'm looking almost entirely at major characters. Some of this is the different structures of the games which encourages this: FF6 has more NPC chatter than XF and much less main plot chatter. Some of it's just what I'm more interested in: who talks? How does that compare to our feelings on which characters drive the story? How does this inform us about the characters? (e.g. Felius is quiet and prefers to let others take the lead)

And we're done with Chapter 1! Ragnar has started talking (and talk he does), I am sad. Cliarissa and Labyrinthia dominated this chapter though their relative dominance did decline with time as by the end they no longer had half the lines between them. Rupert leads among NPCs, but loses to every PC in chapter 1 (though is still ahead of Ragnar overall due to the Prologue).

Huh, it's probably to be expected, but I'm kinda impressed that the order the characters are in for this list is basically the same order that I naturally think of them in.

Like, if I were to rank their 'importance', this is almost exactly how I'd mentally order them. Perhaps Alexia would be higher, but uh... there's still time for that to happen? (And of course, Tony would be the top of the list.)

I wonder if there's some conclusion that could be formed on the premise of 'more lines(exposure) correlates to importance(relevance), even on a subconscious level'.

Like... I didn't really remember Levin, Katrina, or Rupert talking that much, but I still mentally placed them about where they are on your list.

I think it's pretty likely Alexia will pass all NPCs before we're done - the PCs simply get more opportunities to talk, and anyway all the NPCs above her miss significant chunks of time (the past, Weisheit's base, everything past early Act 4 in Rupert's case). Not a sure thing though.

Levin's lines are probably less memorable than average since he's the most likely one to chat to fill space or provide comic relief.

Katrina talks more early than I remember too! She's a character who flew under the radar a bit for me on my first playthrough (one naturally pays more attention to straight antagonists) but there are actually quite a few scenes which are really about her and her motivations, which have payoff later, and she actually does talk a fair bit during them. I expect she'll shoot up in Act 4 and the Final Act, but we'll see.

Rupert has more lines than you would probably guess because he often acts as the player's eyes into Elesian politics and frequently voices his (unpleasant) opinions as asides. I was expecting the title of "most lines by a villain" to be a contest between Charlton and Weisheit but now that seems way off! (Weisheit is going to talk a lot in late Act 3, but he has a lot of ground to make up, and then he's basically done.)

PSP is working again for now, so here's the update up to the end of Act 4! After this, all we have left is the Final Act which is quite short (four sections long), so we're close to the final figures. Act 4 is notably shorter than any of the previous Acts, and is notable because Clarissa rather unambiguously ceases being the main character during it. (She'll be back in that role more strongly in the finale.) Labyrinthia wins the most lines rather easily thanks to her mission briefings; without those it would be a close fight between no less than eight different characters (including her), four PCs and four NPCs. Felius's presence in this chapter is shockingly minimal, as you might expect given Weisheit's absence.

Final thoughts

Clarissa and Labyrinthia finished in a virtual tie for first, far ahead of everyone else. Clarissa of course is the narrative main character, while Labyrinthia delivers the battle reports, which constitute around half of her line total (meaning that even without them, she'd still be #2).

Felius generally talks relatively little but opens up when he feels it's important (e.g. when discussing Weisheit or Elw Borea), which makes sense given his characterization. Despite finishing just behind Levin there's rather little doubt in my mind he's the game's male lead. He, Levin, and Ragnar are all reasonably close at a bit under 500 lines.

Alexia did in fact end up finishing in #6, resulting in a clean sweep for the PCs, though it was a close fight! Her sister Katrina has a major charge towards the end and finishes in the same general area as the other major villains: Edna, Weisheit, Rupert, and Charlton. As I remarked earlier, it's interesting that Charlton, the primary direct antagonist for most of the game, is actually the least chatty of the bunch. Meanwhile, Edna was right after all: the star of this [NPC] show is her!! (Barely.)

After a large drop you get the parent figures: Hrathnir, Melissa, and Eisen. Melissa manages an impressive total for someone who is dead at the start of the game. Secondary antagonists Chelle and the Tormenta Triad are next, with Ellen in the mix, a character who is kinda important for a few early chapters then is dropped after 1-5.

Female characters account for 3739* of the game's 7074 lines, or about 53%. A number of people predicted that they'd have the majority, and they were correct, but it is actually quite close! While Clarissa and Labyrinthia being the top two is a big deal (they each have roughly a third of the female lines), the NPC cast skewing very male keeps things competitive. I would think that an overwhelming majority of RPG stories have majority-male dialog, since XF's NPC cast feels quite typical in this regard, and few other games have such a clear female top two.

Edna & Rupert (& Weisheit) winning the villain squad dialogue race over Charlton isn't super surprising to me.  I might be biased because I liked those characters the most of Team Evil, but Rupert is very clearly the player's eyes in the villain cutscenes; he's an outsider, he's blunt and honest, he's the one who tells the player what they should think, if sometimes ironically ("Wow, that is so callous, tricky, and brutal!  I love it!" etc.)  Rupert is also Clarissa's anime foil, since similar to Tales, this is one of those games where all the PCs have an evil rival (Labby - Charlton, Felius - Weisheit, Ragnar-Chelle, Alexia - Edna, and Levin - Eisen, although the last one is a bit of a stretch), so I was honestly surprised when the main character's rival wasn't the last one to die / be fought.  Still, not super surprising a viewpoint character like Rupert racks up a ton of lines, slightly beating out Weisheit if Kressen flashbacks are excluded.  Edna meanwhile is a chatterbox, and is also the one who hires the Tormenta Triad who have about 150 lines too many it seems.  But yeah, Edna & Weisheit both have their own side schemes they're running that require explanation, while Charlton is a bit of what you see is what you get.

I agree that it's a little surprising Melissa is so chatty.  I can see it, just don't really recall her being THAT active a character, even in the flashbacks, which were usually the Kressen & Felius show IIRC.  On that note, I'd totally forgotten Felius was so chatty at the very end, but I guess it makes sense.

This is horribly off-tone (SERIOUS TERRIBLE REAL-LIFE ISSUES vs. strategy rpg), but this article from awhile back reminded me of WAXF's plot anyway.  Obviously XF chose to go for Literary Tragic Disease/Possession angle on this, with Katrina being an overall sympathetic character, but for the actual kinds of people who have trouble interpreting fear, check out this article:

I think your analysis about the villain line counts is basically spot on, yep. Rupert and Edna are exactly as you say, while Weisheit doesn't talk too much normally but if you get him on the subject of his evil plans and how the world has wronged him (by not submitting to him, naturally), he'll talk your ear off.

Melissa doesn't share flashbacks with Kressen; she shares them with Clarissa and Felius (and on one occasion Rupert) and is by far the chatty one in those. However, it's more that she racks up a lot of lines when you run into her in the past. Some of this is of course that the party is awkwarded out but Melissa is definitely super-friendly and likes to talk to fill space.

Regarding the artcile and Katrina: there are a lot of parallels to be drawn there and I don't think that's an accident. A good read regardless, independent of the game.

Regarding JRPGs having an overwhelming majority of lines spoken by males rather than females... Yeah. I would definitely suspect that is the case. Certainly an overwhelming majority of JRPGs have male leads and a majority male cast, so that follows.

I think even in the FF6 example, you could probably extrapolate a clear male majority despite the two main characters being female. Locke, Edgar, Sabin, and Kefka presumably get too many lines for Terra, Celes, and the handful of semi-chatty female NPCs to make up the difference.

I think you'd need a game with an almost-exclusively female PC cast to have another female-led dialog situation, which WAXF managed to do with a relatively even distribution of male and female characters. That's a sign of good writing in my opinion.

Otherwise, you end up with like... FFX-2, I guess? Or the kind of games that are essentially Harem Anime disguised as JRPGs? Not sure where I'm going with this... basically, WAXF is good stuff and it's a shame there is not more like it.
