Brawl - grinding for challenges.  Think I've played enough of it now to give it a fair rating: 7/10.  It's similar to Katamari Damacy 2 in that they tried to add so much to it, they took away from the simplicity that worked in the previous version.  New stages are mostly horrible (exception: Warioware).  There are some good new characters (Pokemon Trainer, Snake, Sonic), and some more clones/why did they bother characters (Wolf, Lucas, Olimar).  Subspace Emissary is more annoying than old adventure mode.
What?  Lucas and Olimar are two of the more useful/interesting characters they added.  Olimar's just hard to use, so I can see hating him, but the whole Lucas is a clone shit is just that.  Shit.  ZOMG He has PKZ he iz ness is retarded, since none of the skills are used in the same way you would use Ness'.  Hell, even PK Freeze and PK Magnet are different (and therefore more useful).

As for the Melee taking more skill to play... hahahaha.  Hahahahahahahaha.  That's ridiculous.  The lack of cheap out glitch moves forces any sort of competitive play to inherently take more skill or knowledge of the character you're using.

EDIT:  Also, I think that's the first time I've ever seen anyone think that Brawl is less simple than Melee.

The removal of stuff like L-Cancelling makes, if anything, the game more about actual strategy and less about exploiting a bug. L-Cancelling wasn't a technique you used selectively, you either used it all the time or you lost to someone who did.

Anyway... I GOT PS:T WORKING! I finished Ravil's maze, left Curst, met Q (FUCKING Q!!!!!), and recruited Vhailor, who taught me how to use an axe, threatened my bitch, and then I convinced him he didn't exist so he died. Awesome.

Go to the Smash Boards then. The general consensus is that Brawl was made more for the general non-competitive scene then anything else.

They took out, L-canceling, Wave Dashing, Combos. They made characters more floaty. It's way easier to make it back to the stage in this game.

I never L-canceled, but I play against people who do. That shit gives those people an edge over the people who never did that sort of thing. Those types of glitches are exploited and are found in many of the fighting games and used by the hardcore types. You tell those people to not use them. I say ha to that.

Also, the online mode for Melee is complete shit. Does Nintendo know how to do online play correct?

As far as skill to play the game. Brawl, when the tournaments have come and gone, regular Jo Shmoo's have gone, entered and beaten some of the best Smash players in the scene. That's skill? No, this just mean the game was designed for more of a fun value then anything else.

That I could lose to someone who has never touched the game before really irks me. And please don't say it's because I suck, because surely that isn't the case. I've gotten 3rd place in some of the Smash tourneys I have gone to and placed second in a team tourney only to lose to furries!

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin - Beat Jonathan mode at 994.7% completion and all quests finished, started no less than three replays. It's a fun game, pretty easy but has some neat mechanics and I like the level design. Nest of Evil was pretty fun, and holy crap something acknowledges Bloodlines plot.

Started no less than three replays after that:

Sisters mode: Finished, working on the Nest of Evil now. Their main game is a complete joke; tiny hitboxes, excellent maneuverability and awesome rapid-fire attacks do a number on just about any enemy that exists. Nest of Evil was easy going for a while, then I ran into Gold Skeletons, which take 1 damage from both sisters' attacks at level 32. Yeah, that's not going to work.

Jonathan mode Hard: Up to the pyramid portrait. I was expecting murderous difficulty after inadvertently starting a Hard mode game from scratch before and getting two-hit-killed by the skeletons, but replays start you out with something like 4X the normal HP, so that's not a worry anymore. Alucard Spear is brutal enough for damage that I'm not really feeling the increased enemy HP, although I'm sure that'll change later on.

Richter mode: Fun! Not very far in this one (finished the first portrait), but I like the gameplay variations a lot. Kind of miffed it's Child Maria and not SotN Maria, but you can't have everything.

Also started a KoL character, because why not. Level 7 Pastamancer, just got a Clockwork Chef-in-the-Box. Once I can get at the Wok of Ages I'll be happy to give people some chow mein at cost.

DDS2- Beat Heat. Once I got Mediarama it was pretty easy, but he was definitely the toughest boss so far. Now I have Sera and Serph! Sera is kind of awesome, Serph is just plain inferior now. I'm trying not to build them the same with Mantras but it looks like Serph is just going to be a mage whereas Sera is a healer due to Sera learning all the healing Mantras, but I'm not sure what to do with Serph now. Ah well.

The last plot scene was weird stuff. I'm glad Serph doesn't talk because he's a megadouche.

Nah, Data Serph isn't a megadouche, he's about as personalitiness as his silence suggests. (Or he is super-awesome leader and girls flock to him because he's a self-insert. Take your pick.)

Oh yeah, gaming~

F-Zero X: Master Mode continues to kick my ass, though I've come very close on Joker at least. Oddly, on the higher difficulty levels, the cups reverse in challenge, I've found - the more technically demanding courses I am up to the demand of, and they make it easier to kill other drivers on. Whereas I find it extremely hard to keep up with the best computers on the more straightforward races.

Fire Emblem 7 - Up to Living Legend on EHM, still 5 stars in everything. Levels are in the low teens generally. Never made it this far in EHM before. This isn't getting too much of my time at the moment, but it's nice to actually blaze a new trail in the game for once.

Final Fantasy X - Up to the Mi'ihen Highroad. Being careful to Overkill anything that drops Ability Spheres helps a lot, and usually there are fairly painless ways to do so (e.g. Dual Horns, use Dark Attack -> summon Aeon -> boost twice -> Overdrive). Game remains an absolute blast. Tidus is... rather unlikable at first, definitely, but he's very believable. Wakka is terrific. Lulu is a bitch (though awesome gameplaywise, OHKOs everything and gets some overkills). Yuna... she's still mostly potential at this point, naturally. Game does lots of little things right with setting; no other game seems to capture those small details as well.

Mega Mans - MM6 is pretty mediocre. The adaptors are annoying, the stage design is pretty much series-worst. Also wtf at the slow screen scrolling. It's eternally the only Mega Man I mostly just want to get out of the way when I play it. Oh well. At least Knight Chain and Flame Blast are cool weapons. MM7 is next! Kill me now.

Wild ARMs XF - Yeah, borrowing a PSP and this. Up to... 1-13 now I think? Plot's been not as bad as I expected but not especially notable. Clarissa's a bit of a hybrid between Ramza and Jude; probably isn't as good as either but I'll still take this over most RPG mains. Labyrinthia's neat, Levin's a brat but one with potential to be a decent character, and Felius has finally gained a purpose in recent chapters. Charlton seems decent when he's not eating babies, and he needs to stop eating babies because Edna and Rupert already do anyway. At least Edna deserves note for being one of the most physically unattractive female henchmen I can recall. And at least it continues the WA tradition of having lots of villain scenes and actually having them interact.

Gameplay, on the other hand, is what we actually play this game for, obviously. It's obviously modeled itself after FFT, which is pretty awesome to me. No other SRPG follows in FFT's footsteps as much as this game seems to, and that includes FFTA from what I've seen of it (fail, FFTA). It still manages to do its own things, and even has a few advantages over FFT, like how it handles randoms, and the sheer variety in its battles... not to mention that PCs are allowed to have personalities after they join. The fact that you have to re-equip whenever you class change sucks, though, and I don't understand why it doesn't wear its mechanics on its sleeve a bit more, the way FFT did (mostly an issue because it'd be nice to know before using Slow Down or Encourage what the turn gauge would be turned to). Still very sexy, and already I could easily see replaying this game, which is very good.

Clarissa - High speed, high magic, great OC. She's currently sitting in Elementalist for me. Sacrifice's damage is absolute rape, and she's fast and gets the job well with elementals otherwise (granted, no better than a good generic here). Encourage is hax at times, too. Generally feels MVPish.
Felius - Not sure about his unique stuff, I haven't used it too much. Upper Hand's his only OC I use much. Good enough I guess. Sitting in Fantastica at the moment, or going back and forth between that anyway.
Labyrinthia - Good OC, bad stats. Revive is nice, Warp is nice, Replica is nice, speed... is not. Good magic at least but only barely better than Clarissa.
Levin - Really fast! With a decent class and skillset, although the only real standout is Turn Cancel. Currently in Sacred Slayer. Yeah, I like fast healers.
Tony - MOBILE AND TANKY. He's like, Lowen or something. No skillset and bad offence though. On the other hand he's the only reason I beat that swamp battle, after I let Labyrinthia get picked off by the boss.

Secutor - What FFT knight wants to be. What Felius' Halberdier seems to want to be too, for that matter. Really damaging at melee.
Elementalist - Beatdown class (awesome damage vs. weaknesses, which almost everyone has), but lacks mobility, especially since they can't move and attack. Combos well with...
Fantastica - Lets people move and attack. Also slows enemies down, and makes melee fighters better with Invoke. Nice.
Gadgeteer - Healer. Pretty good one, with speed and so on.
Sacred Slayer - The other healer. Can run out of resources but no items needed. Less mobile/fast, but tankier and they have Turn Shift. Yay.
Excavator - Mobile! Not sure what else to say about them yet.
Sentinel, Geomancer - Haven't really used yet. (Just fought the first battle you're supposed to use Geos in).

Erwin Schrödinger will kill you like a cat in a box.
Maybe.

They didn't beat the best Smash players on the scene.   They beat stupid fucks who couldn't play the game without abusing the fuck out of glitches.  Without those glitches the game is far more mental and more about knowing the characters well than being able to use retarded skills that weren't intended to be used.

And yes, that does mean you suck.  If you get your ass kicked by somebody who has never touched the game before (with items off), then you suck and that's all there is to it.

Brawl's online sucking is entirely beside the point.  We're talking about the game itself, not some stupid add on that wasn't implimented well.

Regarding simplicity, I meant that it's HEY LOOK AT ALL OUR SHINY NEW STUFF!!!pleasedontnoticeourbasicgameplayisworse

Olimar does get credit for having unique moves, but seriously, why add a character that's been in two crappy Gamecube games?  Same thing with Pit and Rob.  You've got a license from Konami, throw in Simon Belmont or Alucard.  Both got their start on the NES, and they come from a major series.  Or hell, if you just want to stick with first-party characters, use Advance Wars.  They've had four games, and that's not even counting the related ones like Famicon Wars or Battalion Wars.

And Lucas is a fucking clone.  I'm aware his moves work differently than Ness's.  He's still a clone.  Seriously, is there not enough difference in Mother 3 characters that they couldn't give him some unique-looking moves?  It's programming laziness.  Cut-and-paste the template, change a few hit boxes, cosmetic shit and poof, new character.

It's still a solid game, because the existing concept was good.  But it's a big step down from Melee.

...I laughed.

Final Fantasy Tactics: The Lion War - Oh yeah I finished this.  Didn't do all of Midlight's Deep but whatever.  Endgame battles were jokes.  I think OHKOd Cletienne.

The World Ends with You - Week 3 Day 5.  Boss kicked my ass, which was expected as soon as I found out who it was.  Argh.

Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - Part 1 Endgame.  This map is vicious.

Characters!

Micaiah - Started out kind of weak but she got better later on.  Actually got some damn Speed eventually.  And Thani is good~

Edward - Wrath is hax.  Okay, it only triggered a lot in the first few chapters.  Still, he's solid overall.

Leonardo - Works well for what he does, sniping things from a distance.  Doesn't take hits well at all, so needs to be babied a bit.  Also CANCEL ON AN ARCHER HYPE GOES HERE

Nolan - Is a beast.  Don't try an argue with an axe to the face.

Laura - Servicable healer.  Also I found out that enemies like to attack her to the exclusion of anything else when she's in range.  This is nice for baiting mages since her Res is on crack.  Of course Micaiah still does that better but mages don't target her as often.

Sothe - Jeigan!  Good at it early on but really really dies down about halfway through part 1.

Ilyana - Is awesome.  Better at dodging than Leonardo (and is probably more durable?) and has better damage.

Aran - Still not getting how he's good at all.  Whatever.

Meg - Fucking fails.  Hard.

Volug - Jeigan!  Better at this than Sothe but has the same issues pretty much.  Better at tanking and worse at evading, which seems like a good trade.

Jill - Is alright.  Haven't been able to use her Move advantage much so she's probably better than what I've seen.

Tauroneo - Destroys worlds.  And your EXP.

Zihark - See above.  Giving him Resolve made him pretty freaking nuts.

Fiona - Also fucking fails.  But probably less than Meg.  Maybe.

Tormod - Decent enough.  Not really using him since I'd rather level up my other people instead.

Muarim - See above.

Vika - See above + mounted bonuses.

Naliah - This is what we call "ownage".

Rafiel - Heron!  Does the Heron thing!

*spoilers* - See Naliah.

So now I'm going to try and rush the upper level of this map and hopefully kill enough dudes so that they don't kill me.  I predict pain.  Probably me receiving it.

Just adding my two cents on the Brawl thing,  meta-gaming there's really no difference at all between Brawl and Melee.  Just replace "Fox/Falco/Marth only!" with "Pit/Snake/Wolf only!"  The ony real difference is that Brawl has overall less shit for characters and no stupid glitches.  Not to say Brawl doesn't get away from some fucked up programming.  See Snake: his side tilt has a really fucked up disjointed hitbox.  Same with Wolf and his FSmash.  I can't beat any real competent Snake player because they made him as Heavy as Bowser with 3x the recovery and every damn move of his can KO at 100%.  Pit is another stupid story of how they made heavy characters with too strong of a recovery.  It's really annoying.

Also, I notice enough difference between Ness and Lucas.  Ness is more of the priority hax moves and a broken B-air.  Having played the best Ness player at GameFAQs a couple of times I always go with Ness over Lucas. >.>

Games? Oh yeah, I picked up Sonic 2k6 because it was 12 dollars and the game is FREAKING EPIC.  Like XS3 Epic.

That's fucking stupid, CK.  HE LOOKS THE SAME SO HE IS A CLONE.  Might as well say Odin is a Godlike because of plot reasons.  He plays different, he isn't a clone.  Gameplay is different, so the aesthetics count for shit.

Scar:  I love the sound of somebody who knows he's wrong devolving into a babbling retard.  Kiss kiss.   Even if I'm just a "gawd damn pussy who talks shit over the internet," you're the one becoming enraged over it.  If saying you suck at Smash pisses you off so much, you should probably re-evaluate your priorities.

Eph:  Uh.  What.  Pit?  Really?  Metaknight is far cheaper, and can actually kill people, which Pit... can't.  Hell, Pit and Wolf aren't even characters I would consider top tier right now.  Wolf's good, but there are many characters who are better, and Pit... can't kill anybody, even at 150%, which kind of negates all of his other good qualities.

The real point is that SSB is not a competitive fighting game series, never has been, and never will be. Just kick back and relax sheesh.

FE9 - Beat. 8/10 or so, good fun and removes some of the issues I have with FE, but still has some dumb crap like permadeath. Didn't get in the way much though.

Competitive SSB is an aberration, entirely unintended. That's why there's really only a competitive scene if you disable 3/4 of the gameplay options. There's people who can't seem to figure that out, though.

Meta-Knight really has 2 KO moves: FSmash and Shuttle Loop, the later being fairly risky at times.  Sure he kills at lower percentages than Pit but Pit has a spammy projectile, two reflectors, heavier weight, stronger aerials, and better recovery far offsets the slightly weaker ground attacks.  They're similar in that most of their smashes come out fast, but Meta's strongest Smash has some lag to it and you know that brawl meta-gaming is about "OMFG LAGGY MOVES! IT SUCKS!".

Wolf is top tier for dummies.  Spam B and FSmash and watch all the dumbasses fall for it every time.

What.  Metaknight's downsmash is way, way better than either the forward smash or even his Up B.  That's what makes him good; spam tornado until they're at a high percentage, use forward aerial to advance, then get into a ground dodge/downsmash war.  His forward smash is nigh useless because of how slow it is--the only good thing about it is that it's animation is similar to the grab animation, so you can fake people out.  It's too slow for trying to use for anything other than a trick move every once in a while.  It's also way easier to get back with him than it is with Pit--side B does wonders for that.  The only move I can think of offhand that beats it out for priority is Ness' forward aerial.

The heavier weight is... almost unnoticible, since Metaknight recovers quicker, and, if you're playing with items on, Pit -cannot- get back if he's turned metal.  The two reflectors are nothing but superfluous, the projectile isn't that spammy (you should be able to absorb or dodge it easily), and... stronger aerials?  Aside from Pit's back-A, he doesn't have anything I would call strong.  Meta's forward and back aerials have higher priority, and his neutral Aerial hits as hard as Pit's back aerial, which... is the only thing Pit can ever reasonably kill with.  I honestly don't see the advantage Pit has; I'll give that he's probably better than I think, but better than Metaknight?  You just haven't gotten annoyed by the tornado enough, among... everything else I've said.

As for the Smash series being uncompetitive or intended to be noncompetitive... then why is it really the only fighting game that I've ever seen publicity for tournaments?  I'm sure a lot of people play Guilty Gear or Soul Calibur competitively, but the only tournaments I've ever seen advertised were being conducted alongside... wait, guess it.  I know you can.  Yeah.  Smash tournaments.  It could be a regional thing, but entirely disregarding the competitive Smash scene is... well, not stupid, but not entirely justified, either.  Sure, the game can be played as a party/noncompetitive game but the amount of people who do play the game even semi-competitively justify taking the game as a competitive game.  It's no Starcraft, but it's certainly higher up on the ladder than a lot of other fighters (Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Dark Stalkers, Bloody Roar, etc. etc.... maybe Street Fighter and its sub-sequels--I'd imagine it as a competitive game series but have not personally seen any SF2 tournaments... outside of DLC2).
