Platinum feathers (From the casino) plus Umana (Time orb) smashes the lategame bosses to dust, use it well.

City of Heroes:  Put aside my level 20 Mastermind temporarily so I could try the Hero side.  Made a superstrength Tanker.  Oddly enough, Hero players are very rude and unhelpful, while Villain players are cooperative and friendly.  Go fig.  So I got tired of the hero business quickly.

EO2:  Most of my party hit 70, so I retired them.  Now in level grind mode.  Zzzz...

Okay. I guess it's time to break down and take a look at Namco X Capcom.

The disclaimer that it's a fanservice game precedes this. Of course, it's a crossover SRPG. In that regard, Monolith went the left field lane and had no regrets: the cast is -full- of obscura and less overexposed characters, aiming for a true memory lane feeling and vying for more niche pandering. In this regard, it succeeds massively. The locations are hugely recognizable, and you're likely to recognize the references everywhere and chuckle. The fanservice was done in as clever a manner as a fanservice game could do. The snappy dialogue and the general light-heartedness of the writing do the game a service as well. Honesty is a quality! Granted, some of the choices were WAY out of the left field: Resident Evil Dead Aim? Forgotten Worlds? Baraduke? Genpei Toumaden? What the hell is a Genpei Toumaden? Burning Force? Man, I thought I was the only person who remembered Burning Force even existing.

Granted, the game... isn't as stylish as it could be. Enemy animations are thoroughly disappointing: Strider's Grandmaster could've been massively stylish and neat, but what he does is... smack you with MAGICAL FISH. It's hilariously nonsensical, but poor. Most enemies also are boring. At least, they did a good job with the PCs - thoroughly recognizable, and they often have their full original skillsets, sometimes with added gusto. It all makes entirely too much sense.

What about the gameplay, then? Well... it's SRW-style SRPG. Only with even more broken in a fundamental mechanics sense and a combo system that makes battles slower in general, since they disallow animation skipping. The part of the broken is particularly eyebrow-raising, because it's a fundamental cornerstone of the system.

You see, in SRW, you have notable freedom with spellcasting, trading that freedom for more limited offensive actions (you can cast spirits without taking a turn, but there are moves you can't use after moving, etc), and the defensive system offers the choices of counter/defense/evade for a simple, yet effective experience. This system is fundamentally broken on its own, but to a lesser degree than this one.

Because, y'see? In NxC, you can: cast spells without taking a turn, both -before- and -after- moving. Attacking has no restrictions other than range, and item usage, which exists in SRW but is usually limited and ineffectual, becomes broken in NxC because it also can be used ad nauseum without taking turns, before and after moving. Of course, this makes sense considering the different spectrum of spells in NxC - there are a bunch of spells that require you to be next to the enemy to use. But those very spells tend to be broken, too. The focus on spirits in SRW was mainly self-defense and straight offense, and you had to watch closely to not run out of resources before handling the map. Healing spells were usually expensive and limited, and resource-whoring spirits were also limited.

None of this in NxC. The game has deeper resource pools than your average SRW, and they're far more replenishable - both due to items being broken and thrown at you like candy and due to the existence of other methods of regeneration (particularly, doing chains in a certain way gives you 10% HP or MP regen. This can be abused for vaguely horrific results if you're willing to sacrifice some damage). Then, there are outliers like KOS-MOS and Sylphie, who get what amounts to essentially full MP Regen every single turn due to having a 5% per hit MP regen skill, which makes them horrific beasts. There are other characters who get 5% per hit suffered MP Regen skill, which turns them into doom tanks if they have healing (and the characters with that skill -almost always have-). The healing, being stat-based and skewed towards the high side, also becomes horrifically good. Then, there are the people with MP draining, and they're often paired with inanely retarded support spellsets. This turns them into monsters in their own right.

This isn't even getting into the counter mechanics, though. You see? You can cast spells and use items when the enemy attacks you too. While the counter/evasion maneuvers sans defense are more limited and less effective, the side spellcasting/item using is impossibly broken, and what makes the MP Regen tanks so retardedly good at the tanking business. As long as you have resources and you're not OHKOed, you. Can. Not. Die. And since enemies in NxC are complete wimps (particularly bosses. The enemy competence in general is Grandiatastic) very, very few things can OHKO you through defend - hell, only the final boss can consistently OHKO people through defend. And she couldn't OHKO KOS-MOS, which meant she got soloed by hookerbot.

The system is pretty fun, but very, very mindless. It's the SRPG equivalent of a musou game in a sense, and you're not extracting any depth out of a system this inherently broken. The slow pacing of battles bogs the gameplay a bit further as well. That and having so many forced units through so many maps. In a sense, it was nice that they encouraged using everybody, and there is no such thing as unusably bad in NxC (not even close to. The tier gaps are far more staggering than character usability), but a bit less leash-handling on the roster would be nice.

All in all, it was fun while it lasted, but probably one of the essentially shallowest games I played in years. Which is okay, but certainly not winning prizes. On the other hand, it was hilarious to see how badly the game tried to one-up itself with broken at every turn. Entertaining, but ultimately forgettable game.

FE9: Beat Map 24. Ever since map 13 the game's difficulty has been sliding downwards at a nice fast pace, probably due to me getting a freakishly good Nephenee who can mostly go own maps by herself. Ike/Soren/Marcia/Astrid/Jill are also immensely solid units, although both my Oscar and my Mist seem to like generally failing it up. If it wasn't for the Ike/Oscar support I'd probably just go replace Oscar with Kieran or Haar, but as long as he can survive he really doesn't need to do anything else, I guess~

Grandia 3 - took a year and a half, but this is done. Finally. Anyways, the game gets better towards the end (gameplay wise for me). A little too late though. Earlier parts were not interesting. Plot is horrendous fail. Yes scene skip exists. No, I don't think this is a good enough excuse that you can go around with a story this atrocious though.

PS: Platinum feathers are indeed broken. Those things alone pretty much make the last fight a joke, let alone Time Dolphin.

Grandia III: I thought the beginning of the game (right up until Miranda leaves) was pretty entertaining in that charming, rambling way that Grandia and Lunar games are. And then... Miranda left and they stopped caring about trying to keep the plotholes out of their already cliched and boring story. It's a shame so much money was poured into the graphics for this game, because even though it's pretty, it's all for naught with a story this horrible.

I'm really enjoying the gameplay though - abusing lategame skills to boosts the number of hits in the combo/critical options to create aerial combos is a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to playing around with Hect.

XS - Wow, the pacing is made of win and awesome. Three hours to get into the first -actual battles-? Gogogogogo. Granted, the scenes themselves are pretty good, but it all feels excessive and long-winded. Then, the battles themselves are sluggish. God, I need to get those 150 TP already.

Picked up both FF4DS and Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Time while on vacation. Played both of them quite a bit. FF4 is FF4. Not much else to say. Skuntank being a bad guy makes me sad though. Oh yeah, Totadile/Torchic combo for my team. They get stuff done easily enough(not that these games are, y'know, hard at all.

On another note, Kiernan(the infamous Step Sprog) just started playing WA:ACF(thanks for getting that back to me, sea mammal) and Warriors Orochi.

Saga: Stat topic work. Pain. (well mostly humans). Oh yeah: If I wanted to start with a Musou game Gate, what would you recommend? I was looking at the cheap dynasty warrior games at EB yesterday, didn't have any idea which one to grab.

When did I ever not hype Okuni's parasol?

Super: Dynasty Warriors 5 and Warriors Orochi are the best ones, IMO. Samurai Warriors 2 isn't bad, but I prefer DW5 to it, myself. And if you can find DW5, it should be quite cheap. I'd even go so far as to suggest picking up DW5:Xtreme Legends as well, actually.

I'll also add to the WO hype. Xer told me it's not a good starting musou game due to the added team mechanics, but those are simple, and the sheer amount of broken+usual mindless musou goodness in Warriors Orochi makes it particularly joyful.

DW5 if you want more challenge, WO if you want better everything else.

Go WO. WO still has enough challenge anyways.

Let's see, round up of recent games!

Final Fantasy 4 DS:

Completed. Could swear I posted about this, but guess not. I need to post more.

Anyways, pretty good game. Final dungeon is a whore that makes grinding Mindflayer worth it(as in, it takes as much time as going through the dungeon without it). ._. Otherwise the difficulty was very well balanced.

Zeromus died without dealing damage. But I was L99 by that point. *cough*

Overall, outside of the final dungeon, much improved. Unfortunately the final dungeon was so ridiculous that I'm inclined to say it overall ends up 6/10. Oh well.

Kirby's Canvas Curse:

Cleared with Waddle Dee. ^_^

Also got enough Medals to unlock everything(Including getting all the stage medals). ^_^

Still so much fun. Waddle Dee makes a great challenge mode. Easier to control than Kirby, but less life/no powers/slower movement makes things harder. Fun fun. DeDeDe and Metaknight are also fun, but I didn't get into the harder stuff with them.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin:

Replayed about halfway through this before getting the PSP. Fun stuff, Johnathan got a lot of lucky drops so he was very good this time. Strange that.

Sonic Rush Adventure 2:

Hey, look, a new Sonic game that doesn't suck! Played through most of it.

Then it randomly crashed at Sky Babylon. Oh well. I'll see if I can't get a new ROM or something, but I'm more interested in PSP games right now.

Warriors Orochi:

Up to...Stage 5? SW route.

I love this game. It's broken, the team system is too good(Although having multiple lifebars is not as secure as it looks, since you can't switch out mid-combo and damage is up; You can wade into three officers and have them maul you down from half life to death if you're not careful.) and the weapon customization can make almost anyone servicable. But ignoring that? It's awesome, and it's still hard enough. Fun. ^_^

Megaman Powered Up:

Got through Easy with Megaman, and half of Normal with Megaman S(lide).

^_^ Fun game, so much better than Megaman 1 was. My main complaint is that the Gutsman stage change blows. No, put the hard part near the start, you pricks. Otherwise, very cool, and the added characters are a lot of fun to play and better than they sound.

Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core:

Just got to see Zack talk about how SOLDIER isn't monsters right before they airstriked a small village for having evidence of Shinra being related to wrongdoing indirectly. OH THE IRONING.

Seriously, very good FF7 fanservice(in the non-bouncy sense), combined with a system that is basically a vastly expanded/better version of KH1's. Works out quite well.

Touhou 11: Subterranean Animism:

Cleared Normal with MarisaC. So much fun. Also nukes.

Also, cleared Easy right after with ReimuA, without dying and with a perfect spellcard cap rate. On a screw-around run. What the HELL. That's my best Easy run ever. Even the score doesn't suck! It beat out some scorerun attempts! So weird.

Crisis Core: Finished the Materia Hunter set of Missions (the ones with Yuffie and such), and Hojo's Lab.

I was praying Hojo's Lab would stop sending annoying SUPER IMPROVED MONSTARS!!! at me...then the last two fights kick in.  First one took TOO FUCKING LONG.  Thank god I figured out from a previous fight that Dispel (or more accurately, Dispel Blade) was your god, as otherwise that fight would have been impossible (27k Regen? ;_;.)

Getting merely a Quake Materia from it felt like a kick in the balls though.

The following Fight was...uhh...yeah, so much easier.  I figured he'd be the final in this set (only logical step up!), but...he's so much less aggressive than the previous one.  Yeah, improved offense but you get a lot more time to heal between.  Guess not flinching doesn't help...except when you crit...and he stands there too much!
Well, he has the HP->1...which he never capitalizes cause when you're hit, you have plenty of time to Potion spam your Health back to safe levels.  Yeah, it was neat to refight him in a suped up fight, but he could have really stood to be somewhat more aggressive.

Anyway, finally got a Ribbon which is yay! ...then I see it doesn't stop Death status which is ;_;.  Ah well, decided to screw it, equip status ward and death Materias on, and just hoping I can get that LAST SCENE WITH AERIS TO KICK IN ^@*^#&@)%

Oh yeah abusing the slot system is the way to get anywhere in XS1.  I am suprised you didn't work it out at the start, this is the only way to make doing uber Spell Ray even remotely tolerable.

Oh, I didn't make uber Spell Ray. I just figured it out by the second dungeon, though, which ended up meaning that I picked up on how to uberize stuff. Then, I realized just now that the game drops twinkery point upgrade items like candy. I think I just found what I enjoy about XS1 gameplay.

Subterranean Animisim Easy, Reimu A

Beat first try, no continues used, 7 lives left at the end.  For all the hyping of "SA Easy is a Normal", "SA Normal is a Hard', "SA Hard is a Lunatic", etc...I have to disagree at least when it comes to SA Easy.  That was a legitimate Easy.  (Speaking of which, what the hell is wrong with PCB Easy? *still hasn't beaten without continuing*)

EDIT:
TF2.  Heavy's been updated.  Heavy now has both the line "cry some more" and "om nom nom nom".  How many internet sayings is he going to get??  Arena mode is neat, but I feel like I really need to play Medic, and also don't understand why people need to sit out sometimes.

EDIT2:
FFT PSP: Beat Zombie Algus.  Hard fight by FFT standards.  I believe he has innate Defence Up and Magic Defence Up.  He has Reflect Mail and a Crystal Shield.  This already makes him tanky (like Balk-level).  However he also has Night Sword and his reaction is HP-Restore.  Additionally, his minions are competent--the very first thing that happened to me is that My Ninja attacked an Ultima Demon, failed to kill, and then got OHKOed by the counter o_O.  (Hell, my Geomancer got OHKOed by an Ultima Demon physical at one point too).  I believe it's tied Wiegraf/Velius for most resets before beating, and my party is noticeably stronger than it was at Wiegraf/Velius. (For instance, I finally unlocked Ninja sometime after the Sluice, so that's an upgrade from Thief, and several people are using support abilities now, and most of my party has hit a speed point since Wiegraf/Velius).

Yeah, I agree with you here, since I cleared Easy on my first try with like 6 lives myself (and went and NB'd it with 5 lives to spare the second time).  I'm not even sure SA Normal is a Hard, since I cleared that on my second try.  Though it is harder than most (all?) Touhou Normals.

Yeah, I don't think I can agree with ZUN's assessment.

PCB Easy?  Use SakuyaA!  Bomb a lot!  If you punked SA Easy that badly, I'm fairly sure you've got what it takes.  Okay I haven't actually played either game on Easy but still.

Subterranean Animism: working on Lunatic backwards.  Stage 6 is more or less in the can!  Stages 4 and 5 are absolute nightmares and I haven't even worked up the courage to try a serious run more than twice as a result.  Practice runs will suit me until I have some epiphanies or something.

OTHER STUFF: I just bought Killer7 and Metroid Prime for the Gamecube for a few bucks apiece when I was out picking up a memory card.  From Strago, I recently got Skies of Arcadia: Legends and LotR: Third Age.  What to play first?  Anything to distract me from the horror of Lunatic stage 5 will do, really, but still.  I might be leaning towards Third Age actually, it seems like a fluffy combat-focused RPG and that'd be fun.
