Finished Mana Khemia. Not seeing where all of the hype comes from. Yes, it is good fun but that is typical of Gust games(Haven't played At, which seems to get some hate). The gameplay is good, but the pacing and other aspects of the story bring the game below AI2. Probably a 7/10 for me.

Speaking of Gust games! Putting AI1 in the PS2 immediately after I post this. Hooray.

Also, *Spoilers for WA3/TotA/MK*

This is the third game in a row where one of the PCs was artificially created. Just found that interesting since I can't remember any other RPGs I've played where it happened. <<

You're pretty good at dodging these kinds of games then. I'd say this type of character (especially the main) is pretty common. As in, I could use it as an opening clue in 'Guess the RPG character' and everyone would respond 'TOO VAGUE!' and wait for the next hint.

Japanese people like their clones/homunculi... I blame Rei Ayanami, personally.

HL2: Super gravity gun! YES. I really did want to fling Combine goons around like broken toys. Rock on, Valve. Really nice design work inside the Citadel, too. Felt thoroughly cold and alien, as it should.

So yeah, beat the game, it was fun, etc. I can't count how many times I died just on account of being bad at this kind of game, but I enjoyed it anyway.

Seems like I should do this instead. The lance thing is just annoying since Gunther does have some movement to him and getting the shots in might not be as easy.

IWBTG-Beat Kraidgief, now up to the Bowser Cup thingy. 829 deaths, about a fourth of which are solely due to that spike wall gauntlet. Hoooooly shit.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Finished Radiata Stories: Non-human path this time.
I had always kind of enjoyed Radiata Stories and thought that due to the splitpath anything that wasn't really answered on the Human side would be answered on the NH-side, especially since it's the supposed "Good Ending". How wrong I was. The Human Path ends up making -more- sense on its own...

It's not so much the completely unintelligible "Cosmic Order/Balance ruled over Dragons" plot points that bother me so much as the completely wasted potential of the political plot points that were brought up at the beginning of the game and then completely thrown to the wayside towards the end of the game. If they wanted to have a bunch of unintelligible destiny-controls-everything crap for a story, then that's fine, at least it would have been cohesive (as cohesive as this kind of self-recursive story can be). But instead they chose to go through the trouble of setting up two sides who supposedly have generally-good intentions and they begin explore what each side's motive is...

And then they change the story entirely, now it's just a "it's destiny, can't-be-helped" war. Oh, by the way, Jack has no importance what-so-ever and is pretty much just watching things happen. Except at the end, where he kills god because he has a hard-on for Ridley.

Characters don't follow any sort of logical thinking processes from one scene to the next. Larks, the leader of the Radiata Knights on the human side, is shown many times to be a level-headed, race-sympathetic character. However, he ends up giving commands to negotiate with the dwarves to -Cross-, who blatantly flaunts his hatred of all nonhumans and is repeatedly unabashedly insubordinate.
Jack witnesses the horrible slaughter of the dwarves AND the Earth dragon and then continues to fight on the humans' side, happily killing dragons. You can choose to have him join the non-humans instead, but he does this for Ridley, not because of anything he saw of human cruelty.
The game is constantly -preaching- about how humans and nonhumans should be able to live together, but no one ever makes any effort for this happen.

After this point, any semblance of a coherent political plot is gone. Humans and non-humans fight because that's what they do. It's destiny. Oh, and there's a cosmic cycle of dragon-y death coming to kill all humans. Because it's destiny. Ridley somehow figures into all of this. Who knows why? It's destiny...

I'm not going to even go into why Aphelion manages to fail it up... Although, I will say that I thought he had some potential for being an interesting 'villain' on the Human path... which was just wasted as hell when I got the 'good ending'.

Actually, the whole game's story just reeks of the same storytelling style as Eternal Sonata (not nearly as bad, but same style) and that pisses me off to no end. A crappy story I'm okay with... hell, FE7 was a crappy story, but it made some level of sense and there weren't a ton of plotholes. Eternal Sonata and Radiata Stories both start off with some cool story ideas and then just throw them away for some pseudo-emotional bullshit. I'm not saying emotional bullshit can't be part of a story, but when you've set up a physical plot, don't expect a metaphysical ending to suffice.

The Non-human ending is especially infuriatingly vague, too.

Despite all the hate for the poorly-executed story... Jack himself was amusing enough and really the only reason anyone should care about the story.

To be honest? I found the human path to make SOME sense. If some girl I want to bone shows up in the middle of the night and I have an important job interview the next day, I'm probably not going to chase her in to the woods so maybe I can sleep-sex her or whatever the reasoning for a decision like that would be.

Then he goes out and does his job because he's a soldier and that's what they do. It makes sense on at least ONE level. Duty first and all that.

Personally I pretty much read the whole "Fuck humanity, these guys fail for letting these people be in charge" into the non-human path myself.  Like Jack obviously didn't have it in for all of humanity, but the people in charge fucked up and showed how much bullshit they were.  That could just be my default interpretation for everything though.

Better yet, all dragons are dead by the end of both ending, and still with no cure for Alchondares. Wheee, it is only a matter of time that disease wipe the world out as you have no more dragons left to reset the world.

I kind of thought the point was that there was no "Good Side".  War is hell, and you generally find out there wasn't a good reason for it in the first place.

OMG THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES!  DEEP POLITICAL COMMENTARY!!!

KoL - I am an idiot.  On the run where I'm trying to unlock the Bad Moon sign, I selected the moon sign that gets you random 10 leaf clovers.  I wasn't paying attention and used one.  God damn it, now I'm going to have to run a second HC Seal Clubber to do it because every other class relies on their Epic legendary Weapons too much.  Lame.

Yeah if you thought RS plot was well enough put together to make comments on you could talk about how the ultimate futility of the enter scheme of things because the sentient races are doomed just makes the political/human commentary that is the actual focus over the top of the overarching civilisation destruction plot is actually quite a good way of juxtaposing the two seperate plots.  Except that the writing isn't actually that good and it does come off as disjointed and mongoloid as Djinn has said (the humor elements with the aftergame just make this divide even larger).  Things do not work well to hold up in parallel if they feel disconnected like RS two main plot focusses.   I fully agree that they should have left it as a character driven plot focus.

Edit - This is funny because I rag on the plot here and consider the gameplay kind of laughable anyway (I guess the gameplay is alright, but the MEH factor of the ally AI makes the Human side = Gameplay side is just kind of BAH.), there is some good things in there.  As a whole RS is an unsuccessful jumble of ideas that kind of didn't work, it is average at best.  Polar opposite to Arcanum which is an unsuccessful jumble of ideas that actually works for some reasons and is both brilliant and terrible at the same time.

DQIVDS started as a way to let TWEWY accumulate some shutdown points.

The effective story thus far:

"Why of course nothing will ever happen to us! Nope. Uh-uh."

"Lookit me, I'm a frog!"

Meanwhile:

"Bad accent bad accent go find the barns bad accent."

"Please, bad accent bad accent barns got stolen, bring them back."

Ragnar: "Already know who did it and how it happened."

"...what?!"

Ragnar: "Hello, Avatar. Also knock off the bad accents, I don't have Iolo around to decode idiot like I used to."

"Wrong game, Steve."

Steve/Ragnar: "...Fuck. Well, I still know where the damn brats are."

"Something tells me we're going to really regret having you around."

In the Elf ending, yes. Elves are complacent and would just sit there and take it because, like all elves, they are entirely dependent on a greater figure to change their society and the world FOR them. It is possible that after the Human ending, it could be cured, as humans (gasp) actually believe in trying to solve problems on their own rather than letting some kind of God do it for them.

Atelier Iris - Still playing this, very slowly. Arlin left and I got Marietta, who seems to be a fine replacement for now. Her healing spell is kinda dissapointing, though. As for the rest of the party:

-Klein is fun. Probably the best item boy ever.
-Lita is still MVP. If I cared about Mana Crystals, she'd probably butcher the game.
-Norn is... surprisingly effective, against bosses or randoms.
-Delsus needs more damage. I'm probably doing something wrong with him.

Etrian Odyssey 2

Picked this up on a whim and have been playing the last couple days. The heroic guild Chryslis, led by Capuchin (Dark Hunter), Forsworn (Ronin), Harkan (War Magus), Keith (Survivalist) and Phadeus (Medic) set off into the Labyrinth. Made it up to Floor 3 so far.

Its been pretty rough, really. After defeating the FOE on floor one (and testing themselves on the one on the second floor), the team found themselves flat broke and in dire shape, necessitating that they hire out a few more hands. They already had Kiyone (Landsknecht) from a previous mission, but she alone couldn't handle the first floor. Thankfully, there were several willing hands, including Malgor (Hexer), Anita (Alchemist), Erec (Protector) and Annelise (Troubadour).

After some tough work (and some pawning of their gear for the sake of the guild), they managed to get the original team back on their feet and ready to try and dodge some FOEs on the third floor.
