Grandia 3: Just got the third orb. The jungle was hellish - in fact, it was so bad, by itself it's brought down the score of the whole game by 1, maybe 2 points. Is it normal to be pretty much doubleturned by everything? Stupid big plant thingies are incredibly difficult, especially when they come with the bugs that are a decent random on their own. Levels are 33 across the board.

Battletoads-Rat Race done legit without savestates. Now, only the final level remains. Thank god.

That third rat can go fuck itself, by the way. That part required almost pixel-perfect platforming. Then the boss was a another giant "HAHAHHA IF YOU SO MUCH AS GET HIT ONCE YOU DIE DUE TO HEADBUTT SPAMMING FUCKER" pain in the ass. I'm so glad to be almost done with this game.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

FF4DS: Just cleaned Golbez's clock at Dwarf Castle.

Game continues to impress, especially with some of its bosses. Let's recap since the last time I posted, which was after getting Palom and Porom -

Bosses I've fought! Milon was much better this time around, packing accurate MT status a lot more status to piss you off. Gas is now poison, sleep, and silence, which is a pain to deal with and makes you wish you never threw a Fira at him. So I cheesed him out with Twin magic. nyah~

Baigan died from a few pokes and a single casting of Mini-flare off Palom and Porom. Fail.

Cagnazzo didn't change much either, and ended up eating Thundaga death, just like in FF4o.

Dark Elf... wow, got a lot better. First form is still middling MT damage, but the second form does a hell of a lot more damage now. 700 damage physicals? 800 damage Dark Breath? Yikes. That fight taught me how much less Protect/Shell fail now, since I was able to actually heal up the damage he was causing after using both.

Magus Sisters didn't change, and are still pretty damn annoying.

Valvalis.... jesus christ, that battle was insane. Not only does she counter status spells with Maelstrom now, she also counters all physical damage when she's not spinning with a new move called Lightning, which does 600~ MT damage. Combined with the fact that they made Rosa even less durable than before[why?], bumrushing her is just a really really stupid idea. Oh and she can use Lightning as a normal attack when spinning too, and her physicals in her base form do like 1000 damage on average. So I used Protect/Shell/had Cecil cover Rosa/abused Focus with Yang/Had Kain cosplay Mario for the fight. Eventually I won, but it wasn't pretty.

Calcobrena dolls were even sadder than in the original. Yang and Cecil 2HKO'd each of them in record time.

Golbez got WallChange! And... this... doesn't matter, he still dies in two summons easily.

PCs!

Cecil is a DEATH GOD. Unlike before, Paladin stat growths never slow down at all, and the end results are terrifying. He's... L35-L36 and has 2000 HP and all of his stats are pretty damn high. Combined with his improved white magic skillset, he's definitely better than in FF4.

Kain hasn't changed much, though his lack of a skillset makes him prime bait for Decant Abilities. Singing Kain with Curse powers is pretty awesome stuff.

Cid... Examine is MT now, and he has a fun new ability called Remodel. Remodel lets you take an attacking item[like a Red Fang, for instance], use it, and then Cid's weapon has the element of that item for the rest of the fight[in the previous example, he would have Fire element, for instance]. Pretty neat. The legality on it is iffy in the DL, though. Attack items are storebought in the Dwarf Castle, which are available to him riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight before he leaves the party.

Palom and Porom are the same as ever, which is to say they're good for when you have them.

Yang does way more damage now on average. He easily competes with Cecil right now, and Focus saves your ass on bosses who counter physicals.

Rosa has less HP now. WHY?! She has Rydia-level now. Besides that, she's... Rosa, except arrows never run out and Pray heals MP/fails less often. Balances a little bit.

Rydia is the same as ever. Big damage, not a lot else.

So yeah, game's still really fun, and it looks like this will continue.

EDIT: Oh, forgot to mention Decant Abilities! These are getting more fun. You can get skills that correspond to all kinds of characters. For example, there's a DA for every one of the four fiends, and giving DA's to temps gets you special DA's after they leave[though you'll always get some DA whenever a PC leaves]. Twin is the silliest of the inherited skills so far, since you get all kinds of silly spell combinations depending on who you give the skill to. Cecil + Rosa, the ones I gave it to, get ULTIMA. Which is 99 MP and Meteor-level damage, at a point in the game where such overkill MATK is actually worth something. Pretty fun to use, though the other combinations are better for more serious fights[one of them boosts the PATK of the party, for instance. Edge + Cecil or Rydia?]. There's also a number of other fun ones that I don't have yet, but I look forward to. More to come later.

S5:  So, got my headquarters, and found out I missed a recruit.  Kinda put me off to the game, since I'm in a state of uncertainty as to how to proceed.  Do I restart, live through the hellish intro and go for the 108 stars intro?  Do I keep going and not be a perfectionist?  It'd be the first Suikoden game where I didn't get all 108, but I'm not sure that I care.  Or I'm not sure that I don't care.  Whatever.

Marathon 1:  Speaking of games I started in the beginning of summer and then never played again until recently, I fired this up again.  Got the hang of it now, but all the maps look alike so I spend about a half hour per level just wandering around hitting random switches until I get through.  If nothing else just playing it to get used to PC shooter controls again since I intend to purchase The Orange Box soon.

Disgaea: Grinded high enough to be able to fight Baal.  I won.  Despite my stupidity in not reversing a Stronger Enemies bill and fighting a level 4804 Baal instead of a level 4000 Baal.  It helped that his AI was batshit retarded and tried playing catchup with my Ninja the entire fight.

DDS2: In the Airport.

Vritra did not live up to the hype I was expecting.  I guess status hax can get you or something, but otherwise, didn't find it particularly special.

S5:  So I decided that at some point I'm going to want to get all 108 stars.  I also decided that it's looking like S5 is a play once and try to forget about game, so!

Past the intro.  Fled Lumas to Haud.  Saw the scene that made me restart this time.  Also a scene with Jeane I had missed the first time; dunno if that was important but knowing S5 probably.  -_-  Intro still sucks.

DDS2: Just got to Layer 5 of the final dungeon!  No, I have no clue who the next boss I'm going to face is <_< >_>

And yes, I got Seraphic Lore, Pyr...whatever Gale's unique move is, and Heat joined me, before someone asks.

Bioshock: Still awesome.

Just finished Fort Frolic. What a freaking awesome area that was. Sander Cohen's a nutjob, I loved the short bit with the icy Houdini Splicer, the Nitro Splicer who runs away from you tossing molotovs behind him was an interesting enemy to take down, you finally get a sniping weapon (yay crossbow, for all that it's not as godly as HL2's), and then there's that TERRIFYING room with all the dressforms that turn into Spider Splicers when you're not looking. Ugh. Yeah, just great atmosphere all through that area. Big step up from Arcadia, which was fun but rather fetch-questy and without the horror ambience of the Medical Pavilion.

Machine gun and shotgun are now fully upgraded and both kick decent amounts of ass. Also got the reduced ammo consumption upgrade for my chemical launcher, since electric gel destroys Big Daddies without my needing to so much as break a sweat. Having waded into just a bit of Hephaestus, it seems that Thuggish Splicers now have... electric pipes. Iiiiiiiinnnnteresting.

Piecing together what plot I can from all the audio-diary entries has been pretty fun, but I'm looking forward to getting a more significant dose of narrative in the near future. At least, it's been hinted to me by others that this will happen shortly. Still, the diaries rule. Sullivan and McDonagh for the win.

Got Phoenix Wright 1 for christmas~ Played through cases 1 to 3 so far. Fun fun fun. Sometimes the connections between evidence and testimony seem a bit vague.

Also got Metroid Prime III, which I haven't started yet and am only noting due to the fact that I actually have a wii game worth playing now after a year of ownership. Oh boy.

KoTOR2 - Finished. Liked the game a lot, but the ending sucked. I've liked if it they gave you a way to fight battles after you kill the plot enemies.

Kreia is an excellent character, I can see why she won a contest some years ago.

Next games: I'll probably finish SoE next week and start ToP.

Justice League Heroes - played through Easy and Hard mode quickly to level up a bit more and get some more boosts.  Got Wonder Woman to level 20, and Green Arrow and Flash are close.

Riviera - FAQing my way to some things I haven't gotten before.  Trying to get the Rose ending.

P3 - May 1.  Too many afterschool activities!  Hanging out with Kenji a lot, neglecting the Swim team.

SRW Original Generation Gaiden: Got it! Woohoo. Finished the first four stages. Simple stuff, not much room for error on the skill points though. New animations are nice and shiny, what plot points I could make out are standard SRW ass-pulls, and MX characters showing up is just weird. So, in short, everything I wanted.

Half Life 2:  Got the Grav gun.  Fun shooter, pretty well designed.  Getting annoyed with the "lol physix" puzzles but hey.  More annoying:  the fact that my computer finds it appropriate to make me have to reload the game every load screen.  I'll have to do something about that.

Portal:  Sat down and just beat it.  (Har har).  Started off good, got better when I got the full portal gun, became even better in the last sequence of events.  The finale's comments... hahaha.

"Balls tighteningly good" is an understatement for this game.  Will have to do the challenges or something at some point.

DDS2: Beaten!

Final dungeon was long, though not too bad.  Until the last section; HATED that puzzle of "Choose the right teleporter! If you fail, you have to redo part of this layer!"  Ok, at first, wasn't too bad; just "redo this room!" But...later parts, it was "REDO THE ENTIRE LAYER IF YOU FAIL BWAHAHAHAH!"  if you failed any other section, you'd have to guess which was the right way to go on reruns, which...argh.  No, that wasn't fun.  The other areas were inoffensive, just hated that last one.

The bosses there were cute idea, even if they all failed until the second to last (who got me cause I underestimated him, and he was nailing a weakness with a big move and...yeah.  Almost lost the second time until I said "Bah, screw it, Magic Mirror!" and he hit himself with his big attack doing 1200x3 to himself <.<.  That fight would have also been a lot easier if I had already gotten Force Resist on Argilla.)...

Then Meganada.  That was just a stupid fight.  How are you suppose to go about it, really?  I ended up just spamming Magic Mirrors, using Elec Drain instead when he went into power up mode, and just prayed the physical form didn't get hax.  That's all the fight felt like; one big massive hax fight.  Lost several times purely due to that as well.  Exactly the kind of fight that's *NOT* fun.

Also didn't help that I was expecting a large Save Point on Layer 6, didn't find one, so I couldn't restock on items like I wanted.  This also left me with a bit of a "um, I might run out of resources, crap!" worries for the final, though, that was just paranoia; I had like 4 Soma's, 9 Soma Drops, plenty of Great Chakras, 2 PCs with Mediarama, 6~ Medical Gears, 15 Medical...whatever the 300 MT Healing is...yeah, I was well set, is the point <_<

The final...fun fight.  Definitly had some scare moments ("Eternal Zero!" "That looks kind of like Debili..." *reads description, jaw drops in fear*), though, THANK GOD I planned on having a Dekunda combo before hand, and saved my Dekaja Rocks (well, no, Dekaja rocks I had more than enough of, but still happy I had them), as well as Argilla with the Ring that lowers Combo Turns required by 1 (So she could use Dekunda so long as at least one of the other 2 PCs were alive.)  Also, THANK GOD I managed to get Elec Resist and Force Resist for Gale and Argilla respectively; with all the weakness hitting attacks in two of those forms...um, yeah...
Much harder than Hari Hara in DDS1, and this one was actually kind of fun, and despite the predictable pattern, they managed to throw in surprises (be it Power Charge on some forms, Mind Charge on others, some on BOTH, no clue what kind of status to predict, etc.)
Other scare moments? Well, I did freak when I saw the Eternal Zero -> Marevertx2 + Revertx2 combo...though thankfully, those hit only Argilla, which I recovered from.  Another was when Gates of Hell stoned *2* of my PCs, then they both died from the follow up; managed to get lucky as the following turn (after I revived and such), the attacks were pretty tame (just basic elemental stuff.)  Also, this game had some weird hax as after EVERY SINGLE POWER CHARGE, Light would get at least one Crit in...and would never Crit otherwise.  Supposedly, Power Charge does not boost crit rate, so I think this is just the game playing games with me, ironically <.<

Anyway, overall thoughts of the game?

Gameplay was still kind of dull honestly.  Not a fan of SMT gameplay, and really, this game was no different.  However, at least it wasn't quite as sleep inducing as DDS1, since the game DID hurl interesting fights at you and much earlier too (rather than just "Ok, find this guys favorite style of attack, spam that Void/Repel/Absorb each turn, WIN!!!" and less of the "I abuse the hell out of Psycho Rage!" idiocy...oh, and there's less Bat <_<.)  Randoms were still kind of dull though most died faster, so that was a plus (and the randoms did generally put up slightly better fights, and hurled less status nonsense, so fights weren't as Hax.)  The randoms in the final dungeon were a bit irksome, since so many were paired in such ways that either to hit a weakness, you had to hit a Null/Absorb/Reflect, OR they just were given a million resists.  Its no wonder i just ended up doing Gameplay Skip move (aka Reincarnation.) so much on some enemies *waves hi to Cu Chulains*)

Mantra was...much better handled.  The game actually encourages variety, and you can get to other Mantras through indirect ways, rather than having to go Fire 1 -> Fire 2 -> Fire 3 -> etc, so thinks were generally picked up, and Secret Mantras further encouraged variety within your team.  Rewarding you for actually trying to spread your characters out rather than making multiple clones = good.  Also, the game giving 3 PCs unique abilities (even if one of them completely sucks) doesn't hurt!

Plot...ok, this was actually kind of neat.  Odd since DDS1's plot failed SO FREAKING MUCH, but guess it was a necessary evil and preliminary nonsense to actually set up for DDS2, as otherwise, you'd just be left hanging out of nowhere.  Setting generally worked to.  Yeah, did a good job here, though I'm not a total fan of some of the stuff (mainly the NonFred related ending parts; the whole "The World is me, I am the world! God is me, and I am God!" nonsense just made me vomit.  Also felt the random "Everyone is back together, yay! Oh, and you just became uber based on some ridiculous nonsense!" right before the final dungeon was tacted on just to supe up a certain character...yeah, it wasn't offensive, just was generally silly), it generally worked.
Characters were a bit better too.  Cielo getting more screen time for example made him a slightly better Light Hearted figure in the grand scheme of things (though, he still wasn't great), Gale just continued to work as the primary Rational Thinker of the group, Serph...silent protagonist fail, though they did throw in an interesting back story for him, at least.  Heat was still a bit of a lamer though.  Sera failed a bit less than her DDS1 self cause she actually DID STUFF besides "Protect me, Serph! Oh wait, I'm kidnapped, SAVE ME! Ok, we're friends, kthnxbye!" plus the fact that they actually gave her back story doesn't hurt.  Roland...yeah, decent enough.  Can't explain why...he's just one of those "You end up liking him even though you can't really defend it."  Just has that kind of charm, I guess.

So yeah, very much an improvement over DDS1, though that isn't hard given my opinion of DDS1 isn't too high.  At very least, this game tried something with the Battle System, I felt, while not changing it, and put in a plot so that even though the battle system wasn't much, the plot at least was enough of a hook to keep playing.

Probably getting a 6/10 for me? Its passable enough, and didn't find it nearly as much of a chore to play through as DDS1, but wasn't really that special either, so eh, guess 6/10 works.

SoE - I lost my current save, so back to Nobilia. Currently levelling weapons and spells.

ToP - Mint joined. She doesn't seem to be as useful as I thought she would be.
The game is certainly an improvement from ToD and the translation so far seems pretty good.

That's mostly because offense > in-battle healing in ToPr, and Mint works wonders as an out-of-battle healing battery. She'll be pretty useless until Heal kicks in, regardless.

ToPr - Finished the Spirits fetchquest, going to tackle Morlia Gallery now. Man, the bosses are -easy-. <_<

Castlevania Dracula X Chronicles or whatever is called -  Beat RoB with both endings on Richter, unlocked SotN as well.  I can't remember if I already said this, been talking about it in chat anyway.

ToPr - About to do the Sylph stuff.

RE: Mint comments.  What?  Mint is solid and in battle healing nerfs anything the enemies can do.  That is infinitely better than another damage character.  You have all the time in the world to kill the boss and plenty of characters to do it.  Getting an extra 1/4 damage (overestimation) to limit your longevity is retarded no matter how easy the game is.  If you use Chester over one of the mages I would hazard a guess she probably brings just shy of that damage to battle once she learns Sharpness as well.

Her first bunch of spells are shit, but First Aid spam that she will do all by herself is perfectly acceptable.  It is cheap as all fuck and outheals the enemy damage.  You get stronger heal spells later and once you get Nurse the game has lost.

Edit - This is of course assuming things haven't changed drastically in ToPr over ToPo which I strongly doubt.

Grefter: her healing is not a great boon against randoms. Against bosses, I agree she's pretty valuable, but for ToPr's weirdly frail randoms with suckass damage, you're not getting a lot of mileage out of her support for a while. She's picked up a decent amount once she learned Recover, though, which is a niche I neglected in one of the earlier posts. Status physicals in both ToPs are obnoxious.

just was generally silly

Well, if you read the Hinduism myth that DDS reffernce the every last thing out, it actually make sense.

Well, it is the GBA version.....

Nope, Niu. PSX version, it got a translation.

Speaking of which!

ToPr: Just up to Midgar. Man, I love how broken Cyclone is in the midgame. Klarth is a bit behind due to not having MT as effective, so my main force is comprised of Cless and Arche as of now. Mmmm.
