I think spears ended up being Guv's best overall option? Swords were kind of unimpressive actually, I was surprised.

I know alot of folks knock him, but I personally found Cielo to be just fine. Just made him a Lightning Mage/Healer and he did that job wondefully. and yeah, FAQed Jailer myself as well.

Cielo mainly improves in DDS2 for the following reasons:

A. Available earlier, so his being behind on USEFUL skills doesn't kick in the way it did in DDS1.
B. Status Attacks are less common, or at least, ones that trigger his weakness.
C. He's one of the only characters who you have pretty much the entire game, so you'll end up using him anyway, which means he may actually pull ahead in skills.

Granted, he's still worse than most others, but at least he doesn't feel like a random filler PC the way he did in DDS1, who was even hit hard by the weakness thing which wasn't easily remedied the way it was for the other characters (who were simple "Master opposite elemental mantra, equip that elemental resist, NO MORE WEAKNESS!")

In fairness, mastering said elemental mantra tends to be pretty much endgame in both DDSs.

Guv's Swords give him Falconslash which rules. 1.5x damage for 0 MP = hell yes. And these offence skills do matter a lot. Note how El Cid said he ran out of MP against Dhoulmagus? I got through both forms using less than half my MP. The fact that my party was loaded up with skills like Falconslash seems to be a pretty big reason.

Granted, Spears do have something similar in Multithrust, which to its credit is gained even earlier and averages even more damage, but it does cost MP so you can't spam it through randoms, and it unfocusses against multiple enemies (which could be seen as good or bad). Feels like spears have the edge against bosses and swords the edge when you want to go ST in randoms (boomerangs already covering the MT side of randoms nicely). Overall I place performance in randoms higher so I'm thinking swords have an edge?

The worst thing you can do is not boost either, though. (Sorry, El Cid!)

I'm big on free damage vs. randoms so I can kill things without running out of MP for the boss, so swords and bows for the win there (okay, bows aren't completely free, but Seraph/Cherub Arrow means never having to say "Angelo's out of MP"). Pumping boomerangs does strike me as kind of pointless either way - they're fine at crowd control without the boosts.

Sword/Courage seems the best way to go to me for Guv if you intend to just play the game normally (I would pump courage first even if I replayed).  If you were going to smash the game and contemplate aftergame then I would say Spear probably wins since Hero Spear early just fucks shit up and you probably want the Crit skills for Metal King Dragon or whatever it is called even though the Dragovain sword exists.

Yeah, if you want to do EVERYTHING swords aren't that great because the Dragovian King's later forms are fucking stupid.  Normal game they're easily the best non-courage pick though.

MMBN: I started playing this, beat a couple bosses while trying to ignore the plot as much as possible, etc. but then I got through the train station and found some green haired girl's food stand or whatever and suddenly all the enemies in there are -really hard.-  What's the deal, game?  You went from "real easy, don't even worry about anything" to "okay all the enemies here will obliterate you if your play is less than perfect" in like two seconds, and it's not like I'm sequence breaking.

FM4: I mentioned before that I finished this, and I did, but I didn't really comment on it so I'm going to.  Combat system was fun times for me, ranking pretty high up there as SRPGs go in my opinion.  Granted, it's mainly up against the likes of FEs and the OG games I played, but I'm pretty sure I liked the system here a lot better than either of those.  Aside from just being fun to play, the game is also willing to make you pay attention and play well, and if you don't then it has no problems with -really- messing you up, especially on Darril's path.  Darril's got some hard missions; I have a tendency to throw caution to the wind and charge right on in, and there were certainly times when my reward for this behavior was a bunch of Galbados rockets nearly obliterating my team (at great expense, since you pay a maintenance cost) and forcing me to scrape together a win with a few half-destroyed mechs being held together by Anti-Break (which leaves a part alive and at 1 HP when it normally would have died) and some desperate healing.  It's never cheap difficulty, and the Battle Simulator means you can always build yourself up more and acquire more money/EP if you want (unlike, say, FE7), but it was nice to feel threatened by an RPG, really.  Durandal side had some of that action going on too (I had to scrape through the floating megabase mission with just my missilers surviving, due to overextending myself) but once your Elsa/Latona war machine is up and running and everybody's got offensive links to Latona, it's a matter of putting Latona up next to the thing you want to kill and you can have it dead -that same round- with no questions asked.

Plot wasn't particularly heavy on either side.   The Durandal is a bunch of altruists who are trying to stop a war between international powers that's been secretly set up by a third party, there isn't a terrible amount interesting about them either in plot or character backgrounds really but that's looking at it too coldly.  Potential Hollywood drama situations are pretty much averted completely (see Latona; it looks for a second like the fact that she's Zaftran is going to matter, but then she says "No, it doesn't matter" and it really doesn't), there's no obligatory romance going on or anything, but the interactions have their moments and they're pretty likable anyway.  I blame the VA, which is awesome throughout.  The U.C.S. is largely the same story, there's no incredibly deep characterization going on but they're some cool dudes and their voices carry them.  Plus they've got a somewhat less RPG-ish premise, which is that they're deserters trying to smuggle millions of dollars out of their country, and while they're noble enough and we all know they're gonna turn out to have hearts of gold at some point they also don't stop wanting to be millionaires off this ill-gotten loot.  The villain cast is a joke, it is uniformly jocular, but I didn't really care.

Basically it's got great gameplay, really, it lets you tweak with a whole bunch of stuff and the combat is a bunch of fun just because of the Link system, and the cast is strangely awesome thanks to some real solid voice acting.  Good times all around.  We should go ahead and rank it!  Elsa for Heavy!  She's got 50%+ chance of flat-out evading anything regardless of your accuracy (unless you've got perfect accuracy), she resists a lot of status, high speed, has the AP to attack twice and counter twice, eats things alive with Double Shot, and in-game she's always got a defense link set to Beck's Salvage so in the DL she should be autorevived twice!!

P3:FES-Hooray! Beat the Priestess Arcana boss. What can I say? It's everything I loved about P3 but with the addition of not having to grind for Academics, Courage, or Charm and with more stuff to do. Speaking of which, Elizabeth's Requests. I am having terrible luck with the 'find the katana in the first block' one. Gone from top to bottom 3 times now and no luck. On the positive side, the first date was funny and profoundly bizzare. S. links right now are Magician, Chariot, Moon, Emperor, Hermit, and Hierophant. Should open up Devil, Hanged Man, and Strength fairly quickly. Since S. Links rank up so much faster now I might be able to max all the links in one playthrough. Going to try, anyway.
Don't think of it as a novel. Think of it as a chance to retroactively win every argument you have ever walked away from.

Don't really get Courage > Sword/Spear. Omniheal has to be more of an aftergame thing; maingame it is useful against the final boss and that's about it, as most lategame bosses focus on ST and what MT they have is easily owned by the cheaper Multiheal. Holy Protection's handy to have but it can be picked up cheaply. The rest of the set is more or less bleh (Squelch? Fizzle? MP conservation around the point in the game MP is meaningless anyway?). I'm sure Omniheal owns in the aftergame, granted.

Honestly feel Multithrust/Falconslash rounds out Guv more than anything Courage has to offer. Between Boomerangs and his innate skillset he already covers MT and healing very well, and all he really needs is a good ST punch.

Courage still isn't a terrible set, mind, and I can totally see the argument for dualling it and Swords/Spears (as I did first playthrough). Pumping it to the exclusion of other sets seems stupid to me, though.

FF3, different classes! - Got up to Titan. I remember the days when the Cave of Shadows was the last real barrier between you and the Earth jobs, and not this loser. Quake kicks my ass, although at least unlike last playthrough, Viking >>>> his physicals. Think I've got a strategy for beating him without resorting to a white magic class.

WA4 - Valley of Oblivion. Game actually tries with randoms some at this point (has been since Silver Star Express really) but Cat's Pow and Tiny Flower are a bit much.

F-Zero X - Cleared two of the Expert cups. Yay~

Mario Kart Wii - Intending to buy this soon. Looks like more sexy Mario Kart goodness.

I really like the option of having Zap and the MP reduction personally at least on paper. Coupled with I think you will hit the single skill cap before the 1.5x damage of other skills will really push you over the effects of random variance on basic physicals is thaaaat big a deal.

Replaying Mass Effect. I decided to go Infiltrator because the game makes you either...

A) Bring Tali, Kaiden or Garrus (And that list gets shorter) on every mission

B) Take a class with Decryption as a skill

or

C) Miss out on more than half of all the loot (including all the good stuff).

God damn, I think I might just go back to dragging Garrus around everywhere, because... honestly, my only weapon options are pistols and a goddamn sniper rifle? Garrus gets Assault Rifles and Sniper Rifles. Even Tali gets to upgrade to shotguns (which rule).

WA:XF- Chapter 2 finally. Didn't have too much trouble with 1-14. One reset, then once I switched my Sacred Slayer as a second Geomancer I passed with flying colors. Didn't upgrade any equipment though, so I got beaten pretty badly in 2-1 my first attempt.

Patapon- Fun as hell. I must look goofy as hell playing it, because you really get into the rhythm. Almost necessary though. Sometimes it's hard following the beat over the patapons' singing.

TWEWY - Just beat the main game. Currently on 72 noise/116 masteries/350 items. Final pinup was Enju/Innocence Beam/Tin Pin Blade, also One Stroke Vast Wealth Blink Step and Final Pyre All Expired which were only around because I was levelling them up. One Stroke might have been handy if Final Pyre didn't keep overriding it despite being two slots along ._.

Mmm... Shiki's probably my favourite partner as far as ease of use is concerned. Also seem to remember her having better AI and so forth than Joshua/Beat but that might be due to her mostly being restricted to week 1 where enemies are not as evil as later on.
Did not really think much of Joshua's upgrade. Makes him a tad harder to hit in some instances but in general it just makes him get hit harder. Also I don't remember him ever using it without being told to.
Beat is just annoying and never manages to build up any fusion power if left to his own devices. I don't completely understand his fusion charging myself ._.

As for the big bosses: Mr. Big I've gone over before... Mathman was a considerable drop in difficulty and didn't kill me once, eerily. I have no freaking idea WHAT was going on in the fight against No.93 but managed to beat it somehow eventually after dropping it to easy, Nos 87 and 94 were simple enough but No.95 is freakishly insane. The amount of breathing I had to do in that fight was suffocating.

There are pieces of story missing which I understand are coming up next. That should be fun from a cursory look.

Only real problems I have with the game:
Half the time Neku refuses to move; the tracking for that must be really picky. It gets even worse when you have a dragging pin out. I cannot count the number of times I died because he wouldn't move out of the way of a plainly telegraphed attack. One reason shockwave attacks are so awesome, he moves for you so you don't have to >_>
Pins keep evolving when I don't want them to. How the heck am I supposed to master every pin this way >_>

It should be fun to go back and trash the heck out of some early enemies to work off my annoyance at the later ones.

In any case, it easily reaches the pinnacles of 9/10-hood. Awesome awesome awesome game and I wouldn't have given it a second look normally running by the front cover.

Mana Khemia - Got past the second boss in the bonus dungeon.  This one was actually competent!  Initiative Haste is nasty when you don't start with supports.  Actually it probably is anyways.

The World Ends With You - Up to Joshua day... 3 now?  Something like that.  Hard mode is hard.

Nope, you get Falconslash around the same time you get Zap, and you get Multithrust signicantly earlier; skill cap's not going to be an issue for either.

Zap would be cooler if Guv didn't have Boomerangs.

Nope! You see, when I first got it, I set up a name. It was the same name I set up for Games For Windows Live a couple months back. I figured I could just enable it for Live when I got around to it.

Nope! I had to transfer my half-completed save to a different user name, which means I didn't get any achievements for my first playthrough.

Ouch.  Well yeah picking up Assault Rifle for other classes if you are ever worried about weapon types is an easy fix.

You misunderstand me Elf, I wasn't saying you will skill cap before you learn Falcon Slash or whatever, just that before the damage difference between Falcon Slash and a basic physical isn't incredibly significant until your damage gets high enough around when you will have reached skill cap, so the benefits between having whatever that early are not massively significant.

Wait... you didn't use manual...? You must be really lucky then.... I find the game unplayable in auto.
Aslo for Joshua's leviation. That is actually a replacement for his crapp dodge. He has a full invici frmae while going up and down. Thus he almost never gets hit if you keep on tapping up and down cosntantly. He is actually the best defensive character thanks to that. i usually just keep on hiting up and down unless the light ball is passed to him, so I can focus more on the bottom without worrying about the damage from the top, especialyl when he is the worst character on auto. Speaking of which, you ever triggered Joshua's full scream laser?
As for beat, his system works this way. Youmatch the same amrks and they collapse inward.
For example:

Assume you you have a formatiopn of *oxxo* and you hit the skeleton.
Then xx is a match, thus it will vanish and give you 1 star, then the o collapse inward too and match with each other and vanish a well. But this match is through a collapse thus a combo and it'll give you 2 stars at once. Then the * well collapse inward too and disappear and give you 3 stars as it went through 2 collapse. That is basically how it works. But this is assuem the first collapse has only one match so they all collapse toward the center, if you have two matches, you'll have various center of collapse.

In my brief experience, you may have been trying to dash, and there are things that prevent dashing altogether, like having a tadpole on your face. It's really obvious with something like Teleport Warning on. Also, Tether pin hype goes here.

Unlikely, dash provides a long invivi frame even you don't travle a lot fo distance. So taking damage is unlikely. also dashing has a priority in reception over normal moving and most badge commands, so I guess the problem is normal moving.
