Indeed Cid. So either I be a pirates/swap magic or pray for a miracle. It's odd that I can't find it since Gust is usually good about releasing it's games over here.

FFIX Replay- Desert Palace. Silly candle puzzle. Pretty place though. Rediscovering these dungeons is keeping me entertained. Team is Steiner/Garnet/Vivi/Quina because I made the mistake of sending Eiko with the other team. Since I've decided on Zidane/Freya/Amarant/Eiko for my main team this time around I automatically went with that and forgot to mix things around for the team split dungeons. It's the time of the game where Garnet has become complete and utter fail with can't concentrate (both as a character and in battle!) meaning I'm relying on Quina as my healer. Great. Out of substantial healing via gems too since Eiko spammed Peridots at Oielvert.

Having the ATB on Active certainly makes things more interesting. Tantarian kept on completely mauling and wiping out my party. It didn't help that Freya was only L16 though granted Zidane/Vivi/Amarant's L25 didn't help much either. I only eventually managed to win when I managed to find Tantarian in the book early and had the time to get in two Grand Lethals, a Fira from Vivi and Meteo Twister from Zidane as the finisher. I didn't realise it had so much HP >.> I'd also wasted Zidane's Trance in previous battles due to trying to steal.

Oielvert boss also kept me on my toes mainly because I prolonged the battle trying to steal. Amarant and Freya's offense wasn't up to much scratch either so it took a while for the boss to go down. Still at least Freya's jumping kept her safe at points.

Grandia 3, beat!

The characters and plot both ended up surpassing Grandia 1, but the setting was worse in the end.  The ending was leagues better, even with all of the tripe about love and anvils upside the head, with the only downsides being that they forgot there was still a villain alive (he shows up in a cutscene as you enter the third to last dungeon, and then you never see him again, and he's semi-notable too!) and more importantly, no mention or reference to Shmidt in the ending!  What gives with that?  Aside from that, general amusement at the fact that, in five years, Yuki will look older than his mother.

On to the gameplay, it held together rather well.  Grandia had a heck of a lot of promise, and it's good to see that the promise has actually been carried through here.  It's a bit dissapointing that Xorn basically nulls two mainstays of the battle system, and only provides a single target which further acts as a step down.  The fact that cancelling and air comboing don't really matter for him is frustrating, as it means that unlike previous battles where you're rewarded for having your party act together you are instead just have everyone use their strongest stuff, or just heal the whole group.  This is a shame, especially given the joy that was the Emolicious fight.

Not entirely sure what I'm going to play next on the major consols, but it's nice to finally have this one finished.

FF4DS - About to head into the last dungeon.
Levels = Cecil 59, Kain 57, Edge 58, Rydia 57, Rosa 58

Game has been fun, though there definately has been a difficulty spike on the moon. Edge feels like my main damage dealer - Shurikens are cheap and deal around 3500 damage, even to foes with high defense. Any magic makes him go splat, though. Rosa is nice for Reflect, Blink and healing. Rydia definately seems to have way too long charge times, Kain is decent damage with jump against the many enemies who counter attack, and Cecil never dies.

Augments are nice, it lets Kain do more then attack jump and items at least. I don't like how easy it is to miss some, but it's still a good addition. I gave Hide to Edge to help him survive some big magic attacks, and it turns out you can throw shurikens and such while hidden! He returns after a few turns, but it's still very useful. Other then that, the cast all ability on Rosa has been nice for Reflect Blink and Haste.

Also playing Breath of Fire for the SNES. Just beat Zog. What level should the party be for the last dungeon? Right now, Ryu is 27.

MK: Chapter...6? 7? Somewhere around there. The title said something about UFOs, so I guess I'm getting Muppy soon. Practically swimming in AP due to my insistence on thoroughly exploring every new dungeon before engaging in classwork/character quests. Even the new PCs already have a surplus of 6000. On that note: damn, Anna tears shit up in battle.

Replaying through Lunar Silver Star Story Complete.

Made it from Burg to Vane easily enough in just a few hours. My characters are actually rather underlevelled right now, but I still kill most everything with a Thunder Bomb + physical attack, so yeah. I actually had difficulty with one boss (Truffle Troubler). Not being able to use items was reason enough for it to be hard, though...

Observations so far? Ramus doesn't suck as bad as I remembered, surprisingly. He can still equip a Battle Bow, which makes him do enough damage for him not to be deadweight. His HP makes him semi-durable, too. Luna is just a typical healer. Loads of MP, loads of healing. Cascade Song is really useful, though. First thing I do during every boss battle; double Cascade Alex and then have him unleash the Sword Dances. Which then brings me to Alex. Who is a beast. Boosted Sword Dance does 250+ damage... which is like, 12 times more than a normal attack, and like I said, I'm underlevelled, so that means it's even stronger than that. <.<

So yeah, headed to Lann now.

MK - Yay, beat. Not really in the mood to rant about the game right now, but it was very fun and enjoyable. This is a fluff game, but a very polished and amicable one, and it gets extra points for the honesty. Probably an 8/10.

And that... is sad. Nothing should come before playing Fallout. I don't even know what MK is but there's no way it could be as good. Because it's not Fallout, you see.

EO2:  Beated the OVARlord.  Fought his two forms back-to-back, and they both failed.  Party of Landsknecht, Dark Hunter, War Magus, Gunner were around level 65, and the Hexer was level 53.  Anyway, great game, and will be playing it for some time to come with postgame stuff and replaying with different classes, etc.

BvS:  Busy week getting ready for my Sannin run.  Stuck Emosuke in a bucket until he was properly cooked and leveled up.  Hung out with Bruce Jr. and learned his mad dance skillz (can't. stop. doing. the. running. man.).  Got The Note from Hyuk.  Got enough wins in the Arena for my bloodline power and Doughman.

ToP remake: Beaten with all the optional stuff (except Assassin, because getting to L99 is no). Lilith was a really tough fight - spamlocking with attacks that break guard, high 2HKO Hi-Ougis, doesn't stagger...yeah, pain. Oddly, her Achilles heel turned out to be a standard jumping slash, which hit reasonably often and knocked her back far enough to be repeatable. Dhaos' first form was annoying thanks to the usual Dhaos Laser being fucking evil (but not enough to cause a reset, for once), and Feather-Dhaos and Neo Dhaos were durable but not threatening; they had good damage, but used it slowly enough that I could just have Mint spam Resurrection and that took care of that. Very fun game overall, much improved on the SNES version. Probably a high 7/10, maybe a low 8?

FF1- Just beat Tiamat. Almost done. Levels are around 45? Been enjoyable enough. Very pretty remake of DoS. Challenge is still lacking but hey, you can at least  pick a weak team to help that?!

Okay, I think I'm more in a mood for game rants. So, about Mana Khemia!

This is kind of what happens when you create a fluff game that makes no effort to hide its cotton-candiness, but works as hard as it can to make it an actual selling point. The plot and characters are utter stock anime - and one of my beefs with the game, really. The writing is so stock and by-the-book that it actually mitigates neat ideas and wastes some of the many characterization opportunities the game takes to give a personality to the cast. As it is, you have a bunch of very typical characters that are usually moderatingly amusing and/or generally inoffensive, but very stick-to-the-mold. There are no real surprises. Also, by the endgame, the localization team kinda stopped even trying with the grammar. <_< But anyway. This is a problem, but then, the game is pretty honest. It doesn't try to make its plot bigger than it is, it doesn't change its scale. The execution is flawed, but at least the game itself is self-aware of its scope and respects it a lot. This applies to basically all of its fields, as well.

The gameplay, on the other hand, is a joy. The battle system is highly polished and enjoyable, and the game just adds layers as it goes on. It starts out as pretty stock CTB - but then, the game begins adding support mechanics, new skills to tinker with, and they add new layers for each mechanic introduced with time. The game's pacing works very well there, in that all mechanics and ideas are introduced gradually and without overwhelming you at all. If you're more into a sandbox nature, this may be a problem, since the game has a bit of a faux-sandbox nature that actually leads you by the hand, with a firm control of what you can and can't do. But it's great to ease you into the game's ideas, and that's essential. Also, it has a bit of a difficulty switch with the day/night system. If you want more challenge, night battles are the way to go, and they're generally balanced well.

The synthing system applies similarly. It may look very overwhelming at first, but the game's tutorials and its own rules on what you can, what you can't and how you synth ease you into the task in an intuitive, simple manner. The game never fails to tell you when an item can lead to a new synth, which items you need and the timing for the item creation. It also showers you in resources and ways to obtain them painlessly, and the recipes that you need to make items are -not- perma-missable: if you miss an optional quest in a chapter that has a recipe, it becomes storebought in the next, and the game is very good at telling you the importance of checking shops regularly. And then, the ones that are in dungeons are never obscure: dungeon design is pretty clear, and chests are easy to find.

Of course, this is because of Grow Book mechanics. It's the most questionable design choice I find in Mana Khemia, since it tightropes you into item synthing - the Grow Book is how you level your characters, and Grow Book entries are entirely tied to the items you synth. This is why having synthable recipes being permamissable would be a testament to retardation (and the game wisely chooses not to). However, it's still a dangerous mechanic due to not giving you an option on whether to use IC or not: if you don't, you're not growing, and you're not going anywhere. So, if you don't like item creation systems, stay away. The tie-in with the game's ideas is pretty cool, but it's still a mechanic that I consider fundamentally poor. It was very well-implemented, to the point it overcomes its own bad fundaments, but it's still an issue that others may not be able to overcome.

And then, there's the item creation system itself. It's easy, it's fast once you get used to it, it's polished and it's always adding new things. I kinda like IC systems, and this one gains points for being very forgiving on you, as well as not hiding crap from your sight. You will know what you'll get, and the game tells you very clearly whether you can synth the item currently or not, or whether it'll give you new items to synth. No randomness involved, no obscure aspects that prove to be central to synthing, none of that crap. It's straight and to the point, which is refreshing. Also led very carefully by the game - it's one of the reasons why the game's pacing is so tight-handed: any loop in control and you break the game open effortlessly and ruthlessly. As it stands, though, the game paces how badly you can mangle it very well, and adjusts accordingly. The design intelligence within the choices made is veritable.

All in all, it was a very fun experience, and quite a nice, breezy experience with little to no pretentiousness and a lot of general fun. Some of the quirks may prove unattractive to others, though, and the game doesn't truly achieve greatness due to a few things appliable to its very nature. Nevertheless, it was enjoyable and thoroughly entertaining.

the only downsides being that they forgot there was still a villain alive (he shows up in a cutscene as you enter the third to last dungeon, and then you never see him again, and he's semi-notable too!)

*spoilers, I think*

If I'm not mistaken, his death scene, where Xorn turns him into shish-kebab, is removed from the US version.
