Legend of Mana: Trying to go through the game perfectly as not to miss PCs for the stat topic. Between the lagging, the freezing and crashing on the emulator, I played around 7 hours straight today. Literally have to redo certain parts and boss fights 3-4 times because of that. I feel like I’m doing a speedrun instead of playing it normally >_>.  Tired now (and frustrated).
<napalmman> In Suikoden I, In Chinchirorin, what is it called when you roll three of the same number?

Suikoden 4 - Got all 108 stars. It was easier than I expected it to be. By comparison, I kind of liked how even though S5 recruitment was FAQ-bait, it still was somewhat challenging even with a FAQ.

Using the most painfully obvious team: Lazlo, Ted, Snowe, Kika. Not sure who my detachment team for the last area will be.

I -really- don't want to train all my mages for the ship battles...

Oh, and yeah, Snowe still ended up being the character with the most personality, even though you get 3 chances to outright kill him and it doesn't change the plot.

Overall, Lazlo is boring, but the Rune of Punishment is a neat idea and maybe Lazlo could be more awesome in SuikoTactics (the reason for this playthrough). I hope there's some kind of awesome 108 stars of destiny bonus for transferring S4 save data to ST...

You can't recruit Lazlo in Suikoden Tactics unless you have a 108 Stars transfer.  If you do, he is raw awesome and about what you'd expect for a True Rune user (unlike in Suikoden IV.)  PS Double-Edged Sword is the best spell in the game.

Umm, S5 recruitment isn't challenging if you have an FAQ.

Also, Koudelka is probably the most sensibly-dressed woman in the Shadow Hearts series. Which says a lot about SH given that it still allows for pantyshots (PSX-era fanservice what).

Lieutenant Colonel Kawashima. FACE.

True. I was only thinking of PCs and bosses, really. I tend to forget Kawashima exists.

Growlanser V: Finally getting around to playing this. Just started a new game, since I'd only played the first hour or so before. The intro still amuses me:

Dude A: I hate war!
Dude B: I hate war too!
Dude A: Let us work together to stop war!
Dude B: Yes. I will do this because my wife was killed...by war.

Dramatization, but still perilously close to the actual dialogue. Anyway, after a couple hours I've beaten up the Power Rangers, got Vanette pregnant, and met a loligoth with the most emo birthmark ever. Now gathering parts for the floating death ray we will use to hold the world's nations hostage and force them to accept peace. I'm sure nothing bad will come of this plan later in the game.

...Hey, wait a sec, that's the plot of Diamonds Are Forever. If Blofeld doesn't show up later, I'm going to be very disappointed.

Ugh... GL5 dialogue. They could have tried to find -someone- who knew how to write a sentence that didn't sound literally translated from Japanese?

Apart from the fact that GL5's translator obviously speaks English as a second language, the plot tends to alternate from pretty cool to wonderfully cheesy. At least they -try- to be serious... My favorite part is where they start pulling multiple Soylent Green plot twists to offset the fact that while war -is- bad, there are some things that are worse (done in the name of peace, of course). It's at least a fairly uncommon theme(in RPGs, anyway).

Interestingly enough, they never actually defame the idea of holding the world hostage to force peace upon them. They really just disapprove of using WMDs that run on people and Destroy The Environment(TM).

Yeah, I was pretty sure the latter point would come up when the midget said that the Admonisher (bwahaha) ran on leyline power.

EDIT: Especially since the land is apparently dying already anyways, what with all this babble about the soil going infertile. Have these people not heard of crop rotation, or what? Also, ahaha at no one killing a screaper before. Did no one have the brains to think up the masterful "drop something really heavy on it" strategy before Seldous?

Also: Randall? The pink boa is a bit much.

RPG NPCs.

Screapers are pansies anyways.

And yeah, GL5's plot is a mixed bag.  Ranges from "ARGH!" to "well that's kind of neat" to "well that COULD'VE been neat but ARGH!"

Yeah, I love GL5 but plot ain't the reason.

Mega Man Powered Up: Iceman's Missions completed! Easy Mode New Style Boss Rush mode completed! ...with Iceman cause Hatbot said so, go figure.  In the middle of Bombman's missions.

Why did I do the Easy mode boss rush? Cause I have to do it anyway eventually, but mostly cause I wanted SOMETHING DIFFERENT than creative use of x Robot Master, like you know, actual fighting.

FFX: Started a new game of this! Anyway, at Kilika Temple.  Taking my time cause, uh, I'm trying overkill things as much as possible...I've been getting lucky on weapon drops and such though.  Tidus got an Icebrand which makes overkilling those Lizards in the forest cake, for example!

And last but not least, a game I've been playing in relative secret...

That game being...

Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy 7:
Why did I play this? I guess you could say "blame the Vice President."  Anyway, played it, beat it, somehow B Ranked it despite me thinking I really sucked at it...I guess DMCs and God Hand have taught me to have no faith in myself <.<;

*ANYWAY*, what to say about this game...well...uhh...I might as well work...my way...down from best points to worst?

Visuals!  This shouldn't shock anyway.  Easily the best point of the game cause, you know, when Square wants things to look good, they'll get it right here!  Anyway, the graphics were sharp and scenes pretty...but too much Nomuratastic Designs degraded from it, and frankly, Cutscene Vincent ends up being the same kind of "awesome" every time so...uhh...not much to say!

GAMEPLAY!  Ok, this is something that actually matters.  The gameplay was tolerable enough.  Didn't really stand out, and got a bit repetitive...and outright annoying depending on enemies (fucking Missile guys!), but it wasn't bad or anything and its relatively forgiving anyway ("God damn it Red the Red stop che-...wait, there's a shop I can access much as I want? ...ABUSE TIME!")  If the claim that this game is like PE2-lite or something, then...uhh...I guess PE2 has hope for decency and I should look into trying it one of these days <_<?
anyway, weapon wise, I generally used Cerberus S w/ Normal Barrel, Blast Machine Gun w/ Short Barrel, and swapping between Bayonet Rifle or Hydra P w/ Long Barrel, seemed to work well enough.

...Griffon is pretty crappy though.  Couldn't really see much of use for it other than I guess dealing with large groups which...Materia worked better for anyway.  Well, guess it helps conserve ammo for Cerberus (AHAHHAHA to using Hydra for anything other than Sniping...which admittedly, it does really well!), but mrf, felt it was too unreliable and a pain to aim (FOR THE RECORD, I played the entire game on Manual Aim.)
Blast Machine Gun was a lot better cause while it had the same issues as Griffon...it'd cause enemies to actually flinch in such a way that getting just one hit in mattered! Also funny juggling situations.

MUSIC! ...is utterly forgettable for the most part.  Nothing stood out as really bad to me, but...well, I'm just wondering why they didn't subvert a few FF7 songs into the mix.  I mean, Crisis Core did it all the time, I was at least expecting the FF7 theme and Vincent's theme to get snuck in there and such

If you care, Crisis Core has at least the following songs from FF7 in it: Main Theme, Bombing Mission, Turks Theme, Aeris' Theme, Fighting, Those who Fight Further, Nibelheim, Shinra's Theme, and One Winged Angel.  probably a few others I'm forgetting but...yeah, you can see why I was thinking they'd at least have tossed in SOME FF7 music in the mix.  I mean, Advent Children did the same too!

And lastly, we get to the epic part of the game...

PLOT AND CHARACTERS.  I'll start by saying the game can take consolation in one fact in this regard; its still better than Xenosaga 3.
Now, the plot here is such massive MST3k Value (for those who read the LP, let me just tell you that what you saw is just the tip of the iceberg.  Yes, The game has a lot more nonsensical in its last 5 chapters than the first 8, its impressive I know) its not even funny.  The game can be summed up by this, frankly:

"Everything that goes wrong in FF7, regardless of what point in time it is, unless its back story, is ALWAYS Hojo and Lucrecia's fault, REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOU MAY BE LEAD TO BELIEVE.  OH yeah, Lucrecia is always innocent and doing things for good intentions and just fucks up, while Hojo's evil!"

...I wish I wasn't kidding, but this is pretty much the truth.  Also, Lucrecia manages to be Jesus and a Slut at the same time!

...then gets outJesused by White the Pure.  So I guess she's just the Virgin Mary or something?  ...which would actually make Sephiroth Jesus...and he's not even in the game...I should probably stop trying to put symbolism to this game.

...though, I could have a lot more fun with those random connections! But yeah, I'll end there.

SO BACK TO THE PLOT RETARDED WITHOUT SPOILING ANYTHING!

Lucrecia is a slut. I can't emphasize this enough!
Retcons galore!  Somehow Shinra can build AN ENTIRE CITY UNDERGROUND and the only people to know about it are Shinra, Heideggar, Hojo and Scarlet...
What, that doesn't sound too weird? What if I told you said city was built under Midgar, behind a big obvious ominous door that was the only entrance into the place?
FF7's planet is fucking retarded.  I don't mean the game setting and all that, I mean the actual sentient being its suppose to be is; really, the whole game can be summed up by "Deepground does shit, Planet thinks WORSE SHIT is happening, and attempts to go emo."  Those who have read the LP already know this, those who haven't...I'm really not kidding here.
Cid never swears, what the #@&^?
There are apparently 7 Cait Siths!  Now, we know #1 was destroyed, we see what we assume is #6 go bye bye as well...which leads me to wonder what the hell happened to #2 (aka the one in FF7 post Temple of Ancients) and on...and why do none of them have Moogles <_<?
Vincent is Emo, Angsty, and Goth...but you already knew this.  Dirge of Cerberus just likes to secure these facts.
Yuffie is Bipolar! Yeah, at one point, she's...well, Yuffie.  At other points she's...completely out of character being this whiny (...not in the Yuffie sense anyway...), over dramatic , worrisome bitch.  Why they made her the 3rd most important FF7 character...you know what, fuck it, the very existence of the game yields "???" for why it was even made, I should just stop trying to figure out the thought process of Square at this point.
GENESIS TEASER IN THE GAME'S ENDING!  ...after Crisis Core, that seems incredibly weird since Genesis' voice is incredibly different, and he looks a lot more evil than you'd think he is at CC's ending <_<;
Blue the Blue, Red the Red, and Black the Black.  I don't need to say anything else; this is an awesome set of villain names!  Damn you Orange the Clear and White the Pure for breaking the trend *shakes fist*
Speaking of Orange the Clear...WHY DID THEY MAKE HER THE LOVE INTEREST? ARGH! LAST THING WE NEED IS VINCENTxLOLIJEDIWHORE.
FF7 Captain Planet with Vincent being Captain Planet! I wish I was kidding...

...yeah, I could go on mocking the game's plot, but it truly is something else.  At least it...uhh...
...no, its offensive; it takes FF7's plot and then spits on it by piling on a bunch of crap that is very much forced into it.  Contrast that to Crisis Core, where the plot doesn't matter much for FF7's overall story, but doesn't contradict (actually supports in some cases!) anything FF7 had.  Or Advent Children where the whole plot was just flavor text for the nice pretty action sequences <_<.  I know you're probably thinking "isn't DoC the same way?" and while at first I'd say yes...
I then am reminded that for every line of dialog Advent Children had, you got a minute of action!  Dirge of Cerberus, for every minute of game play you have, you have a minute of plot scenes.  ALTERNATIVELY, think of it as XENOSAGA THE 3RD PERSON SHOOTER, FF7 STYLE!  I really wish I was kidding regarding the plot scene thing, but...some really are that fucking long.  Hell, there's even an entire chapter where all you do is run around talking to people like its an RPG...IN A SHOOTER FOR FUCKS SAKE.  Yeah, its harder to ignore the plot here, unless you decide to scene skip every scene...which isn't a bad idea, since plot scenes don't do shit to help you in gameplay, and after all, people were saying to do that with Grandia 3 and at least in Grandia 3, plot scenes told you where to go and what to do next!  Anything useful for gameplay will be told in the game itself, which of course, is a good thing.

I think I'll stop there.  The end result is the game was more enjoyable than I expected cause the gameplay wasn't TOO horrible...but it wasn't really special either.  The plot owns XS3's and little else, and Lucrecia is definitely up there for one of the worst female characters of all time...
And by this, I mean she's pretty clearly the Shion Tier.

...though, thinking on it...
Considering his Mother was a slut, total bitch, jesus, and a horrible failure all at once, and his father is, well, Hojo, I suppose Sephiroth going insane was only inevitable! The fact that he kept his sanity as long as he did is pretty amazing <.<

At last Meep. You now see my point on why we need another stuoidest whore in RPG history vote off and get Lucrecia into championship.

As for the planet thing, it actually wasn't that bad. What Underground did was basically simulated Planet's natural death, in order to get OMEGA Weapon boot up early.

ToV: I am now very certain that Yuri is the seme, but Flynn is a uke refuse to be at the bottom, thus Flynn is actually a tsundere. A tsundere voiced by Miyano paired with Umitori..... God, it feels like ToV is setting up multiple traps to psych all yaoi fan to death. They should have outright make this game a yaoi game.

Meep:
You wrote a full page about what might be the least-inspired game of 2006, or 2007, or whenever. What the fuck is wrong with you?

Anyway, I finished S3, and decided to bite the bullet and move to S4. The one thing that brightens up my gameplay? I quipped "Man, if the hero was a Mega Man villain, he'd be Homoman." And thus he was named, for the horror deep in his eyes spoke of a deep-seated fear of Snowe's dong clamp and steel-spiked butt dildo. All in all, the game is pretty bad. It takes forever to go anywhere, and random encounters happen every five to ten seconds, which is a sure sign that the game didn't take more than ten hours to beat so they stretched it by adding ludicrous encounter rates and big stretches of nothing. I got Kika, which means I'm almost to the point where I quit and deleted my save game last time.

The fact that they went from Suikoden 3, which I've spoken on how much I like a number of times, to this? Insulting. It's like they said "Hey, you know how the characters were actually different and you needed to understand how our skill system worked to have your characters be good? And how most of them had personalities and maybe a bit part in the story? Fuck that, it's too hard for the people buying this game."

Just finished Suikoden 4 with all 108 stars this time.

Pretty much completely agree with Rob's assessment. The beginning of the game is torturously slow-paced. The gameplay gets a little more fun later as you get more characters and options, but it's never really great. Plot was... better than Grandia 3! Though yes, after S3, it's a big letdown. Still hoping SuikoTactics might salvage something from this game as I really like the Suikoden series.

Overall, the best part of the game's story was probably the inclusion of Ted, because at least it reminded me of things that I liked about other Suikoden games. The idea of the Rune of Punishment was pretty cool, but Lazlo was lamely executed. Snowe had the most personality of all the characters, with Elenor and Lino being somewhat interesting to watch, as well.

I really can't think of any other good points? You get Viki early so luckily sailing stops being the ARGH FUCKHATETHIS! problem it was in the beginning. Yes, the exclusion of a 'new gameplay feature' is one of its good points.

Onto SuikoTactics, may it have lots of Mizuki-hotness!

I... liked getting to name the boat? I would have liked a couple extra letters so I could name it the LCS Invincible instead of just the Invincible. But such is life. I also would have liked to be able to have enough letters to name Strago "Deadanimalhat" and name Frog "Sex Machine."

So, after meeting Eleanor, I remembered that she's like Shu, but without all the impossible-to-actually-execute tactics. Which is to say her strategies are the brilliant "We're going to recruit people from other towns and then fight the main enemy town." Which is another thing I liked about S3: they skipped all that. By the time Caesar joins up full time, he's got a united army, he's got Salome doing logistics, and his job is to figure out what Luc's goal is, not to decide whether you're going to go clockwise or counter-clockwise around the map.

Generally supporting the S4 hate.

ToV: MMm. A cookie-cutter Tales game with a good level of polish is just what I needed. Character interaction is fun, Yuri is a pretty dang likable main, and at least its kind of pretty when it wants to be.

Difficulty balance is kind of nutsy with silly powerful bosses and even a challenging 1 on 2 fight vs. the game's joke villain's (think Peppor and Solt here). Camera has the same problem it did in Eternal Sonata: the game is really pretty but you can only see it from a bird's eye view. Frustrating and so damn pointless. Enemies and dungeons are in general better than in Eternal Sonata, which is to say they are acceptable. They are boosted greatly by the raw number of (fully voiced!) skits throughout them. ToV skits are entertaining and generally serve as good character scenes for the entire party. Speaking of the party...

Yuri: Likable main. Sarcastic and quick-witted but is generally a decent fellow unlike earygame Luke. On one hand this means less room for development! On the other hand, I can't say he doesn't have any room for that. He certainly has his own issues, though they don't keep him from being likable. It also helps that he is pretty damn logical about what he does and why.

Estelle: Pink-haired healer swordgirl in white. She acts about as what you'd expect. She might be annoying in another game but the interaction with Yuri helps a lot here. Hey wait, that sounds familiar...

Karrol: Ewww. Annoying brat. But guess what? The game realizes he is an annoying brat and serves us LOTS of scenes of him suffering. I approve heartily. Is somewhat saved by interaction with Yuri.

Rita: Is like Raine, except her gimmicky fascination with Blastia serves more purpose in the plot and seems... far more interesting a character flaw. Generally amusing enough and works really well with Yuri and Estelle. Also, primary torturer of Karrol. Can't go wrong with that.

Repede: Ruff Ruff, bitches.

Oh well. Enjoying the game, and hoping it doesn't fall into horrible territory. Also....

BAD NIU. NO YAOI.
