Disgaea 3- Finished.

Let's see...

Characters-  Not as good as the first two unfortunately.  The comic relief Chef got kind of annoying actually.  Compared to a normal game the cast is solid, but compared to Disgaea 2 and especially Disgaea 1, it's meh.

Gameplay-  Very similar, changed up how you get/improve spells.  Didn't really seem better or worse, just different.

Plot- More spoofy genericness, works for this game though.

Fun overall.

Tales of Vesperia:

*gets the Tyrant Fist*

102 hit combo without really trying.
...
...

So now Yuri can activate Overlimit within his combo and reach level 3, resulting in a huge-arse chain culminating with a Mystic Arte, with a Burst Arte thrown in for good measure? I... wow. This be some serious broken. Never thought a Tales game would give me something like this.

Yuri for Godlike.

You've yet see what Judy and Lita can do Cryo. Yeah, go use Judy and scream I-NOOOOO with me.

Gaaah.... I'm shipping an American copy of this game to Japan. The Tales fan in me can't stand that everyone else is already beating ToV.

Just get the Jp. version or something for the sake of yaoi. I mean Toriumi/Miyano, you cannot miss this if you have the tiniest bit of endorsement in yaoi.

In the Danghrest scenes before all the Phaero crap, Yuri says that "cutting off and arm to save the body" was good or some crap.  Then he yells at  Phaero's cut off crap.  Struck me as ridiculously stupid, and I'm not the kind of person to have such a strong reaction.

Yeah, Chrome was random as all hell.  And all the stupid little plot holes that I have to fill in myself are annoying, for once.

I see. I'll blame translation on this part, this is one huge flop. He was clearly implying different things there. And I wouldn't really call the plot holes little, all the stuff behind Alexei is enough for the production of a side story title. Especially on his relationship on Chrome, there must be a reason for why she choose to let Alexei do what he wants when she can have him taken cared of herself.

I'd say the skill system is sacrificing the main game for after game. By making everything mana reliant, it makes getting new techs and spell somewhat difficult in early game, while you can just purchase everything like mad once you are in the after game.
Oh, and there is one thing wrong with the characters, Sapphire should not have existed. She completly destroyed a possible yaoi couplee, unforgivable.

Went to an anime convention today, which largely sucked.  But they had a Brawl tournament, so I entered.  Unfortunately, it was best 2 out of 3, 3-stock with NO TIME LIMIT.  This led to really long matches.  The tournament started at 4:00, and I didn't get a match until 5:00.  Since it was standing-room only, my feet were killing me by that point.

Picked Ness, and went up against a guy playing Mario on the Pikmin stage.  He mostly just threw over and over, but since he was good with his throw timing, it turned out to be a good match.  I narrowly beat him.

Then for the second round, he picked Donkey Kong and I picked Random because I am just that cool.  What does Random give me?  Donkey Kong.  Normally he's one of my better characters, but I was just not feeling him today and got trounced by my opponent's Donkey Kong.

So third round, despite my aching feet, I have to preserve my honor.  So I pick Manly Pink Luigi and he sticks with Donkey Kong.  It's a close fight, but I barely miss grabbing a ledge and lose my last stock.

I didn't stay to watch the rest of the matches - needed to go sit down.  The overall skill level was surprisingly high.  Some of the highlights included Meta Knight versus Kirby (Kirby won!), an extremely good Snake player doing some kind of crazy sliding version of his Up Smash that I can't even begin to figure out, and an outstanding fight between Zero Suit Samus and non-pink Luigi.

DQ8 - "I am notoriously bad at taking orders."

Far more stylish and badass than I expected from Marcello.

(For the Elfboys: Sir Leopold failed. =( Couldn't really expect any different from a boss that had to face a Timbrel of Tension. I was doling out nearly 1k a round with that, and he never haxed with his criticals. Poor thing.)

DQ8 - Okay, so the last few Marcello scenes were badass, too. Real cool style to pull off him, too bad it was so late. I liked how they pulled off the resolution of the Angelo/Marcy conundrum, though. More elegant than the norm, and very fitting for both.

Gameplay-wise, he was Sir Leopold who went a bit faster in the first turn. Man, the Timbrel of Tension makes the maingame entirely pointless. Don't think I hold Marcy and Leo against it, since I admit I dicked around a lot to get it, but Rhappy should be fair game.

Timbrel of Tension feels more aftergame from what I remember, but whatever floats your boat.

ToV: Lots of fun to be had, perhaps TOO MUCH. Altered Artes are what really frustrate me. Theres no way I can learn them for everyone. Estelle wound up with Nightingale but thats it for non-Yuri Altered Artes (and he only has 2). They are so very FAQ bait, I think. Oh well. It is a big deal for using characters because a large part of the comboability is vested in them (except for Yuri, who Brutal Fang's his way into Overlimit and... yeah). Currently bemoaning the fact that I don't have any giant Crab Shells and can't seem to respawn the giga-monster that drops it. So no Estelle Immortality hax for now. Pity about that. Doesn't prevent her from being crazy tanky all in all.

Bosses are surprisingly status whoring. Fake Final had Weak on an attack or two, and this last one had Seal and Weak (Max HP/2) thrown in with the good damage and durability. Durability would be trashier if they didn't cheat and ignore combos half the time. And of course Overlimit means RUN AWAY as always.

Not much to be said. SCREW YAOI-BAIT SCENES but whatever. Gameplay is fun enough and plot/characters isn't making me gnash my teeth.

RSMS: Party is ridiculously built-up. Barbara knows every martial arts move in the game (Triple Dragon took for-fucking-ever, but I got it) and almost all the Long Sword moves, Guella Ha kind of stalled out on the high-damage Polearm techs but learned Multi Shots and Zapper on back-to-back turns so he's set for damage, Silver has a 55-power katana and Gust Blade, and Aisha destroys stuff with Triple Star and Kaleidoscope. As far as quests go, I think I'm out of stuff to do other than ecology, and running through Aquatic Ecology more than squashed any desire I might have to do the rest of those. I just finished The Dragon Knight, and the only question now is whether to keep the Dragon Knight in my party for Saruin or get Aisha back. Those stats, immunities and attacks are pretty damned awesome, but 5 LP...

Ziekwalt's chapter was good for fleshing out GL5's backstory some? *shrugs* I generally enjoyed Ziek's chapter, but I guess by the time I got to it, I was already pretty invested in the game and anything in the story that didn't suck completely made me feel better about liking the game. So, yeah, a mostly inoffensive part of the storyline, I felt.

The thing that gets me about Ziekwalt's chapter is that, apparently, two hundred years ago, people knew about the Dragon Orb, the Queen Screaper, vital energy, the ley line, and all this shit that the current generation needed Ziek/Pernagi to tell them about. Scientific progress goes boink. I also would've preferred something more substantial between Elessa and Ziek than the token "Oh, we're related to each other."

Anyway, Korin is the champion (my friend). Recruited Sherris and Rufus and everybody loves me for some reason. Ultimate equips look like various degrees of painintheass to get (and I know I flubbed the requirements for some), so I'll probably just finish the game today.

There's a water search point west of Phaeroh's Crag that drops the Giganto monster stuff.

Spear and Polearm high-end techs are ridiculously difficult to learn, alas (not quite as bad as Club though, go figure).  2-H sword and 2-H axe are probably the easiest to learn and they do some of the best damage.

GL5: Beaten. However, I wound up having only half the options for the epilogue--Krious, Randall, and Rufus. It occurs to me that those were the ones I saw the Friendship Medal scenes for. I would've tried giving it to everyone during that sequence, but I ran all over the damned PMB and none of the girls were there for some reason. Korin's Friend Rating showed everyone as pink prior to that sequence, so everyone should've qualified. Did I screw myself out of getting the girls' endings somehow?

Yeah, I noticed the 2-H axe hax last game, when I started Albert on it during Theodore's Madness and by the end of the quest had it as his best damage. Was going for something different this game (which initially included clubs, but I traded those out for katanas after finding Crane Princess).

DQ8 - Rhaptorne in a nutshell (all forms):

So, yeah. Timbrel of Tension utterly trivializes every single main game boss into a frail blob. Because they didn't have to headbang against DQ8 AI enough. Regardless, this was pretty fun. Not really up to elaborating on why I liked DQ8 and what I didn't like, since I'm not up for gargantuan review posts right now, but it was pretty fun. 7/10 territory? Guess it works. Very enjoyable despite liking to run over my biases with a freight train.

ToV: Beaten. Final boss was a pain in the arse for two reasons pretty much: had lots and LOTS of annoying status attached to his damage and my teammates kept on going "Hey Yuri lets help your haxing combo by hitting the enemy to the ground so it gets canceled 25% of the way in!" Then I switched to Rita and Overlimit->BlahBlahBlah Ground Dashered the freak's sorry arse into oblivion. Quite satisfying. I imagine this would be less viable on Hard mode.

Gameplay was better than the other Tales but that doesn't say a whole lot. I actually really enjoyed the combat here though. Overlimit being as broken as it is fits very nicely with this system. In fact, this is generally the XF of Tales games as far as fantastically broken stuff goes. Lots and lots of it.

Plot was a lot worse than TotA, which DOES say a lot. Its pretty terrible. Generic garbage that left me almost with G3 level apathy for the plot. Characters were... well, better than G3 certainly but not all that great outside of maybe Yuri and Judy. Skits in general were good additions, and made the dungeon treks that much more varied (take a hint, FF12).

(quick comment: This game has an "Equips teach you skills" system ala FF9, but a lot of these would be legal I guess. Without doing a lot of research I can't say how things would turn out in a DL environment).

Yuri: Works as a standard fare badass type, which plays very differently on a main character. Easily the strongest in the cast, even if he was holier-than-thou at times. Gets a few points for Killing the baby-eating villains in cold blood when they are unarmed and pleading for their lives. Nothing glamorous about it, just plain murder he commits knowing its what has to be done. Definitely not something you see from a Tales main very often. Combatwise, he's the easiest fighter to work with. The game keeps him up on skills by handing him the seriously evil ToV combos before anyone else. Felt pretty MVPish in that regard, though Estelle might have something to say about that (Tales Healer and all). Once he gets the Tyrant Fist he's pretty marvelously owning, being able to activate Overlimit and chain things into oblivion. Quite gruesome. DL... I'll give that damage a wide berth of respect and say High Heavy at least. Throw in the fact that his insane combo pretty much guarantees an instant-death Fatal Strike and that works.

Estelle: Typical healer noble girl type. Complete with pink hair, yeah. I'd have taken Arche myself, but Estelle works for what she is. Gets more and more confident as the game goes on and grows as a person, but I find myself not caring much. She at least plays off the others well enough. Combatwise she is your healer. She is also shockingly durable thanks to the defense being awesome. Damage blows as a rule and she's slow and painful to use but works well enough for what she does (better than Mint). Hard to argue with her, really. DL... hey, magic immune with a regen trick while defending and has counters while defending and can't be killed while defending. Probably doesn't like status much but yeesh. Heavy or something.

Repede: Dog. In battle he's supposedly a fast fighter but I didn't make much use out of him. DL Light probably? I imagine his damage winds up being poor. Aforementioned comment on skills is very applicable here though, and Fatal Strikes still exist.

Karol: Annoying cowardly little brat who grows into an annoying brave little brat. Not much else to say, although his constant suffering is the source of much amusement. The "distraction" scene where (if you pick the right option) Yuri and Judy gang up to inflict unspeakable evil on him? Wonderfully funny. Battlewise he's another fighter with a nice fast healing move that gets himself and anyone nearby and a similar move for status healing. Plays like another Presea but with ToV making things generally more fun. Probably good all in all and worth using? Sure. DL Middle or something? Too many skills to really comment as I haven't got them all.

Rita: Constantly PMSing mage-girl? Sure. But at least Rita targets her pain-infliction on the right things: Enemies and Karol. She develops pretty nicely over the game, actually. I ended up finding her mildly endearing but maybe I'm just crazy from all this Tales playing. Being the only real mage gives her a niche nobody else fills, and she is fun to use once you can actively switch characters and want to start comboing spells in Overlimit. If you aren't controlling her she is moderately annoying sometimes because she can knock down the enemy you are comboing and end the combo prematurely. I think I mentioned above that Ovelrimit->Ground Dasher is beautiful, but it stands to mention again. Best part about it all? Her incantations all become "BlahBlahBlah *SPELLNAME*" when using a spell in overlimit. Too bad I never got Meteor Swarm, and didn't get the Tidal Wave grade farming gimmick to work. DL... no idea. She has magic immunity! And possibly melee immunity! And can combo base spells into altered spells! I've no idea where this puts her damage. And she's frail.

Raven: MYSTERY. The "old man" deal grates the hell out of me because I don't think he's even over 40 but whatever. TALES AGE SHENANIGANS. If what I remember from TotA is right, maybe there is a 50 year difference between 32 and 21. Combatwise felt hard to use, and I had to turn off his spells because they sucked. The healing shot skill was useful in a pinch but more of a randoms thing I guess. Probably worth using if you want like everyone else. DL Middle? No idea, but he has CONFUSION on an arte and other stuff. Not even sure his healing effects him offhand.

Judy: Hot girl is hot. Yeah, Judy is the fanservice of the game. She is pretty dang graceful for such a character though, and generally has a likable personality. A little bit on the MYSTERY side but thats pretty well worked around. Her interactions with Yuri are a joy at times. Pity there weren't more of those scenes (well, there are, but I didn't get them). Gameplay... she's really hard to use. But very rewarding when you finally get some nasty aerial combo off. Probably the second best at damage in the cast outside of Overlimit Rita. Its a plus that she looks really cool while jumping around like a madwoman! DL... Middle/Heavy? No idea how things turn out.

No comment on the enemies in the game because none of them are interesting enough for me right now.

So yeah, standard fare 6/10 or 7/10 game for me? Could be a 5 if I focused enough on the negatives. One last comment on negatives? Missable things, I hate them. And this game has a *lot* of missable things.

Tales of Vesperia - yep, finished the game too.  Overall I wasn't amazed about it but it's still a pretty solid RPG for the 360 and the best one among a bunch of medicore-to-crap games.

SPOILAR TAG

I was really digging it until sometime into part 2, then the "heh? what the fuck plot" start kicking in and not even the lively cast could even save it.  I think it was more of a lack of a solid villain besides the rarrIeatbabies and the humanitymustsuffer that exists in almost every average RPG.  Abyss did kind of break that mold for a while at least which actually made the game better than Vesperia for the most part.  Also, the lack of a Dist replacement hurt a lot. Yeager?  His voice made him feel like a joke, but he kind of fails besides that. Speaking of characters, I felt the cast lacked a strong bond besides the usual we're friends and friends stick together stuff along with no real plot twist except that out of left field thing with Raven really being an Imperial Captain ..  In fact, I was sort of expecting Flynn to put a Delita and become a bad guy or something (but really Yuri acts more of the Delita type while Flynn is the goodietoshoes that is Ramza, kind of makes sense).  Totally don't see the yaoi overtones except maybe one scene.  Niu, stop trying to make yaoi happen and ignoring the even more frequent yuri overtones between Rita and Estelle! >_>  Really, the whole part of turning blastia into spirits and Entelexeia into spirits felt more of a rush job and an excuse to make a throwback to other tales games showing "here is how summon spirits were born! OMFG It's a ToP/ToS prequel!!1"  Ugh,  the ending was even worse. Here, have a slideshow of drawings from a 12 year old! That's it.  No real relationship resolve between Yuri and Estelle (or Flynn in Niu's POV"), no real ending FMV or any sort of dialog.  Lazy and lame and totally killed my thoughts of a replay at the moment.

Yuri:  Really great main character for the first 70% of the game, then just sort of becomes the typical unsung hero who fights with his friends.  He really got too sidetracked early on with looking for the aqua blastia for someone who really cared about his home.  He really does pull off a believable lone wolf without looking like a jackass pretty well though.  Gameplay wise, he's easily MVP with the sheer amounts of physical damage at a high rate.  The game is much more breakable that any game in the series and it's hard to not break things with Yuri.

Repede: Badass dog.  Really doesn't add much to the game besides being Yuri's partner and an extra PC.  No real backstory, no real major cutscenes.  He's a dog and acts like a dog......just fights with a ninja blade.  It works.  Gameplay wise, just an average attacker.  It requires player interaction to make use of his hit-and-run tactics and fails as an AI.  He needed more artes and some sort of gimmick besides stealing to warrant any real use (besides being a dog of course)

Estelle:  I really liked that dress at the beginning of the game, also pink hair. Oh wait, her character?  Usual healer architype with mysterious powers that threatens the world and makes the same jokes of her boobs not being big enough.  I thought the swordgirl build would have made her a better attacker but she's far too slow to really make use of it.  Also it felt kind of lame that she didn't get any more Pow Hammer skills.  Those are always a fun arte to use.  Other notes of her, she's probably the only character than can win via only using the defend command.  The set of skills allow her to reflect damage back, heal TP, immune to guard break, and never die all while guarding is an hilarious gimmick, but too bad I couldn't really get people to hype it because ToV isn't turned based or something.

Karol:  The party's scaredy brat.  I never liked him from the beginning and not ever, except when he's on the blunt end of the jokes.  I suppose he improves later in the game but I couldn't really begin to care.  Gameplay wise he actually gets pretty good damage wise and the healing gets good if you can abuse Altered artes but his speed is horrible and you really can't do anything about it.

Rita: Little science bitch.  She's funny when she acts like one and makes some great scenes owning Karol and Raven, but she just got too creepy with her Estelle obsession later in the game. Gameplay wise: "blahblahblah Tidal Wave!" repeat 1000 times until you're so sick of hit you want to smash the speakers out of your TV.

Raven:  Not really so UOM despite what the game calls him.  Very Captain Kish otherwise if that gives you an idea about him.  The big plot twist with Raven was probably the only major one in the entire game and even then it only really amounted to a small part of the story. Pity, as there was some potential there.  Gameplay wise, he's easily the LVP if it wasn't for Love Shot.  Otherwise, his stats suck and his archery blows.  Really sucks after the awesomeness of Natalia.

Judith:  Easily the best character outside of Yuri.  She knows that she's the game's fanservice character and shows it. Lots of it.  Sort of reminds you of a loveable little slut.  The whole mystery of his mission was probably one of the clever parts of the game and did a good job of hiding it from the non-Yuri people (Yuri is too smart for bitches).  She's really fun to play as once she's learned all of the aerial related skills and there's some sense of achievement pulling off a crazy aerial combo.  It's much more fluid in ToDr, but this comes pretty close.

Villains were terrible.  Gauche and Droite get points for random pantyshots and Zagi falls under that special type of fail that never stops failing.  Meh, I say.

However, the biggest piss on you moment of the game is the amount of missable stuff in the game.  Here's just a list.

Estelle's overall best weapon (with a good skill!)
Judith's best weapon (which spans a 8 part sidequest that begins BEFORE you get Judith)
Several spells and artes, all of the advance type
Several costume titles (Yuri's True Knight one is okay missable one because Secret Missions are well documented)
Rare monster sidequest (which begins after you actually find a giant monster)
THE ENTIRE OPTIONAL DUNGEON, WHICH IS REQUIRED TO COMPLETE TO FIGHT THE CAMEO BATTLE AND MONSTER BOOK COMPLETION.

Ran out of room for some reason and I NEED TO RANT MORE.

Yeah, fuck developers that need to have missable sidequests where you receive the award at the final dungeon but the cut-off mark is like at the midgame.  Doesn't help that FAQs are pretty poor, the guidebook is shitty and the best source of information is reading a engrish site from Kouli.  Still, there's lots of polish under the mess of the plot and loads of bullshit and enough to earn a high 7/10 from me.

Why ToV has so much missable stuff when ToR/ToDr's missables were pretty much universally unimportant[TITLES!!!!] is completely beyond me, I must say.

In spite of all that I still wanna play ToV ;_;

WA2

So I got this running on emulator. I get to the first screen and named Brad, Hauser due to the entire thing about him being a war criminal now and Illsveil prison. Everything's going fine, until random battle.

Okay, the music is neat. Its a WA game so, I expected no less. Graphics looks decent. But wait...something's missing. I wait for 3-4 minutes and then it hit me.

WHERE IS MY BATTLE MENU

So yeah, I've gone through the first dungeon without knowing what I'm inputting. This is pretty hilarious as a whole since I can't tell what I'm doing, and the only time I see my HP is after all my commands are inputted. This is going to be fun. I need to change the video plug in. But if that doesn't work, it won't stop me from trying to finish this (albeit, painfully).

Even Abyss had loads of missables, but were mostly titles too.  I remember getting Luke's special artes and Guy's Jewel of Garardos at the endgame despite hearing stories about those being missable.  About the worst thing missing in TotA was the Tutti core which almost everyone knows how to get by now and still is pretty simple to get.

Was away from my games all weekend, but had my laptop and got a few quality hours of SaGa Frontier gameplay in. It's actually my first SaGa game and what originally drew me to it were the multitude of main characters and multiple ways to develop different 'species' of characters. I find myself planning party setup after party setup long before I can recruit the characters and every time I get a new skill, it fills me with joy and happiness.

Currently playing Asellus chapter, building her as a Swordsman, though I may try to make her work as a Mystic Mage at some point. Not sure which ending I want to get yet, so I haven't absorbed any monsters yet. Any suggestions?

My only complaint is the lack of documentation in the game and how I'm constantly scouring FAQs before I can make an equipment or skill choice. Also, the game is WAAAAY too open-ended after the 'intro'. I had no prompting to begin the Gift quests OR character recruitment quests... This just seems like poor design to me, despite the fact that I really like the recruitment and Gift quests in and of themselves.

Currently trying to get Fuse to join my party but I think I'm horrendously underpowered...

Is there an FAQ somewhere that details what -order- dungeons should be tackled in so as to avoid repeated dying?

*back to SuikoTactics and LoD tonight.

SaGa Frontier dungeons generally speaking scale to your level, the bio lab at whatever place is generally going to rape your face and there are a few other places that are rough no matter what with a smattering of places that barely scale at all (on both ends of the spectrum), but generally speaking you can go wherever.

And yeah the unfinished feeling of SF is going to pop up all over the place.  It is a gem of a game I think, but it is incredibly rough and practically requires breaking to pieces to be fun.  I highly reccomend finding out how to abuse the gold selling glitch and just be done with it.
