Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn - 3-8. Woo, I got to kill Lethe with Sothe~. That, and this is quite the interesting plot point: The enemy turn music is even the same as your turn music. Nifty~

Mother 3: Chapter 3, named the monkey Eph just because~. The translation is excellent: A lot of jokes everywhere and it's just a lot of fun to actually look at everything~. Battle system is pretty much EB again, except attempting to do rhythm on an emulator is leaving me :(. Oh well, it isn't that much bonus damage...

So far I have to say. 10 is impossible. I have 0. >_>

For now, avoid fighting during the Dark Hour.  Fight in the Light Hour to get your feet wet.  You get a lot of ties there, which kind of sucks, but half a win is better than a loss.  You can usually fight some newbies in the non-Dark/Light hours as well.

Basically you just have to burn through a lot of fights to get it.  You can buy the Gladiator ramen from your village for 1,000,000 XP, and make a supply of Emergency Rations.

Arena is a lot of work, but it's worth it.  And unlike most things, it won't get easier if you wait until a later season to start it.  Quite the opposite, in fact.

Magna Carta: I must really hate myself cause I played 8 fucking hours of this game.  Well, no, it was going to be only 5 hours until the Router here decided to die for a while and not knowing how much time was left, I figured I might as well get closer to finishing this game.

Anyway, just got the Mountain Shard.  That means I got *2* pieces of the Zelda's Axiom Bullshit this game decides to toss in in one day! Yay progress! So I now have...3 total!!!! There are 8 pieces, keep in mind.

On the plus side, Magna Carta's cast isn't complete fail.  Finding myself liking Calintz, since he pretty much spits on the usual JRPG Main Character Trend (even if MC is not japanese made) by being one of the more experienced members of the team, having actual leadership experience, and generally being rational and level headed instead of this idealistic teen (they gave that role to Azel instead, whose more just some kid who looks up to Calintz...oddly not annoying I guess cause he's clearly a supporting character, instead of the game rubbing his naive view points in your face like WA5 did)...yeah, its mostly just a breath of fresh air, if nothing else.
Chris can also be amusing at times, Eonis is bland, Reith...I'll reserve judgment on, its obvious there's a lot left with her, Justina's kind of there but her side comments about Reith can be funny, Haren can go die in a ditch for all I care, and Maya's the smartest person in the cast cause she doesn't say anything! <.<;
(ok, I'll be fair; the cast isn't a bunch of morons, but some still say the smartest person is one who never speaks, so...uhh...I guess that still makes her the smartest or something <_<???)

...yeah, that's about all good I'll say about Magna Carta so far.  its got the most boring combat I've ever seen, its plot...well, it TRIES...it really does!  Just it fails cause the game lacks this aspect of clarity or focus, so its just tossing cryptic stuff at you when it feels like the game isn't trying to be cryptic, it just is cause it fails at explaining anything.  The music sucks, and...I guess that covers everything so far...

BvS:  Jack made #1 today!  Yay!  He got...  A Golden Band of Power.  Boo (it's only +2 Tai levels).  I just wished I realized sooner how useless the Catgirl Entourage is.  I'm considering switching villages with Wil and Jack, just so Wil can get some time in the spotlight and possibly make Sannin/#1 ninja.  Also gives him a chance to pick up Duelist's Aura with Godaiyou's 10% off arena prize costs (yay Pilot Training!).  This also means that Wil's gonna be the important one collecting runes again...  Joy.

I should probably get the Eye on Jack before he leaves Godaiyou, though.  +1 Range is nothing to sneeze at.

All other games:  On hold until Monday (when I have a day off from work.  Yay working the 4-close shifts at a grocery store!).

Going for a Sannin Run?  If you've been spending some time in the Arena, there's a (relatively) cheap item that gives you +15% to your XP ranking.

That item is no longer useful for sannin due to the changes actually. What it is useful for is a shiny run.

Atelier Iris - Finished. Fun game, but it suffers from bad design too much for its own good. Mana/Item Synthesis is an interesting concept, but it gets pretty boring at times. Too much fetch quests. A sucky ending. Horrible sidequest system. There is definitely room for improvement, and I hope the next games fixed those problems. Probably gets a 7/10 from me.

As for the characters:

-Klein: Best item boy ever. His Mana Items are incredibly broken after you get Power Item. Good for damage, healing AND utility, but his bad speed and defense force him to baby himself with Mana Jars too often in the beginning. Gets much better later on.
In the DL, he is a Heavy. Plenty of status effects, stat uppers and downers, healing and good damage.

-Lita: MVP. Don't ever bother using the Mana Heal machine you get: right after you lose the Ruby Prism, get her into Pale Wing state, stack your power boosting equips on her, add Popo as a Mana equip and start spamming Drop Kick. I'm pretty sure I' ve OHKOed some bosses with that.
In the DL, she is also a Heavy. Her excellent speed (coupled with Fast Attack and Alluring Bikini's Charm effect) allows her to use Pale Wing right at the beginning, and Dodge kinda helps her with the bad durability.

-Delsus: I didn't find him that useful in-game. Bad speed and lacks damage for almost 90% of the game. His MP doesn't allow you to spam Spirit Blast without wasting items, and his passive techs, while interesting, are not nearly as effective as just plain killing the opponents before they act.
In the DL... not sure where he lands, but he is not bad. The counters and negative status effects translate very well.

-Norn: Her durability is incredibly bad, but she is pretty good on most of the other fields. I don't know how good her damage with Illusion is yet, but Telekinesis criticals pretty often and Turn 2 Candy and Sleep work very well by the end of the game. Also excellent speed. I think her DL strategies will be very similar to how she functions in-game.

-Marietta: When she joins you overlevelled, she is great. Later on... not so much. Gameworst damage and speed, incredibly dull techs and a lightning-based physical aren't helping her either in-game or in a duel. She takes damage well, and I guess Healing and Erotic Bikini's Charm effect saves her in Light, but she is nothing special.

Guitar Hero 3: Picked this up on sale yesterday. I suck a lot less than I thought I would, meaning I was able to mostly 5-star Easy and did decently at Through the Fire and Flames. Then I tried Slow Ride on medium and sucked a lot. Woo, practice time.

SRWZ: Stage 48. Still perfect on SR points, mostly cruising. Big O is awesome.

Mana Khemia- Finished.  It's a neat system, but it feels like it takes the game until about 70% of the way through to really give you access to all the features taht make it run at full strength.  But always at least entertaining and the last few boss fights really do come together nicely.
There isn't really plot so much as a series of character arcs, so we can skip to that step.

Vayne- Struck me continually as a variation on your archetypal shonen main.  The setting means he cn't be book dumb (he's obligated to be skilled at the task at hand, which is alchemy which involves study), but he's clearly a complete klutz about people and feelings (for at least justified reasons), more of an anchor for the madness around him than crazy himself, but hardcore Determinator for his friends.  So nothing special really.  endgame arc just made him seem immature, which again is justifiable but doesn't make him more interesting.
DL?  He loves this useless little move called Overrealm.  Unlike in game he can't manage a steady damage output thanks to SP limitations, but half turn charge time to unload all his SP at once works well.  Half turn charge time also limits him to Heavy despite the comfortable margin of overkill.

Jess- She's portrayed a little schizo-esque.  I mean, first half is all about her love of all things explosive, cute and all, second half focuses on her serious plot.  I'm not sure what this balances out as, so I'll just hype the bag.
DL: more than anyone else, Jess is hurt by SP limitations.  Healing Echo is possibly one of the best healing moves ever, but she only has, what, 7 castings?  And that's before considering that she has no offense at all if she spends her SP that way.  Still, Healing Echo's nature means she can stall well enough against people around her speed, and Silence is a good trick if one-note.  High Middle.

Nikki- Catgirl.
Seriously, I'm pretty sure she is the archetypal catgirl incarnate.  Funny though, and avoids verbal tics thankfully.  Stupid Haircut Saga is too catchy.
DL- Nikki has the novelty of being good in the DL for exactly the reason she is in-game by endgame; high speed coupled with good non-SP offense.  She lopped off like half the final's HP by herself with Bear Charges under Burst Mode.  Heavy.

Flay- Ever wondered what Mystere might be like if he had no Leo persona?  Play Mana Khemia.
DL: Like Nikki, works for exactly the reason he's good in-game.  Raiden Charge -> Pain.  On average did about 65% of the damage in boss fights, although Nikki surpassed him for the final, and the hardest boss (in both forms!) in the game negates this entirely.  May be related to her difficutly, in fact.  But, much slower than Nikki (especially since he needs to charge up, although Raiden Charge's quick recharge helps some), and more spoilable, so probably more of a High Middle.

Pamela- Adorably Chaotic Neutral.
DL: So high res makes up her HP at least somewhat, and she's physically immune.  And has a variety of usably good statuses, including silence.  Oh, they run off her HP which she can drain back fairly inexpensively due to The Grudge (she should be able to get away with Kiss 2 Bear...).  Damage and speed are lacking, sure, but... High Heavy, if not Godlike.

Roxis- Obligatory Ho Yay.
Nah, he's more interesting than that.  He tries to be the straight man of the group, but Vayne's already the nice guy version, so he's actually the Logic Jerk.  Buuuuuuut, he gets himself owned this way due to Flay and ManaofLight being around.  He's fun.
DL: Translates better than he probably has a right to.  Ingame he's entirely about Purifying, since to do real damage he needs to plant time cards, which in turn nerf his go-to damage slightly.  But in the DL, since there's only 2 time cards before dropping his own, it's back up to in-game performance, so he's able to batter away at opponents.  Quick doesn't hurt neither, but kinda frail.  High Middle probably.

Anna- Awesome.  Although like Jess, her increased seriousness as the game went on makes herhard to really comment on in the final analysis.
DL: Basically ID dependant.  In-game she chains together a few Quick Dreams, does her big damage, and swaps the hell out because she's got no SP left.  She can't really do that, so spam ID off solid speed and Quick abuse and hope that works.  She can probably muster a moderately quick kill at need, but it's easily spoiled by decent durability or speed.  High Middle.

Muppy- Eh.  Poke poke I guess.
DL: Y'know, I used him for exactly one fight in game.  The hardest fight in the game, mind, but what he was there for was to be a sacrifice and take MT OHKO for me.  Apparently Change! doesn't do that missing thing, though, so take hit -> turn into puni -> take wussy puni hit or two -> win.  I mean, unless Giant Puni is a possible outcome, this is pretty effective, but his slowness definitely gives the opponent a chance to just kill him.  Middle of some flavor.

Bosses!  Three of note.  the last is a tinyname.

Renee: Middle or High Heavy, depending on where you see Azureflame Mana fitting in.  He own damage is competent only if she spends charge time on it, but she's got enough HP to get away with it in Middle at least.  If you can silence her before her first turn, that's the end of it.  Else, she summons Azureflame, which is only moderately more competent than her non-Double Up damage, but can cast Boost to shove her into OHKO territory, or boost its own damage up to... low 2HKO sounds right.  In-game, once summoned Azureflame counts as a separate boss who must be defeated even if you knock out Renee, how you treat that is up to you and makes a big difference in the ranking.

Tony: Heavy.  Hits 75% HP and starts dishing out some level of 2HKO damage, pretty straightforward.  Sucky on the status immunities like Renee though, so there you are.

Isolde: Godlike.  Passably durable, crazy fast, silence status, weakish damage but with time cards attatched, or  at 75% HP charged up OHKO, or at 50% HP fast-acting (or maybe just zero delay?  Whatever) 2HKO.  Oh, that is practically guaranteed to inflict Break as long as all three hits get in.  Murders PCs, outslugs bosses as long as they can't buff to get through the more dangerous phases quickly.


Hmmm.  Reminds me of Chrono Trigger.  There's not really any depth beyond the tropes, but it's fun to analyze anyway and the gameplay works better than it looks like it should and it jsut flows beautifully.  I was waffling between 8 and 9 before, but writing it out I'm definitely going with the 9/10.

PS: PLAY MANA KHEMIA.  Needs more writers.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon - Realized there was a menu patch for this, and a walkthrough covers all the remaining text that matters.  Missing FIRE EMBLEM PLOT, oh noes.  I can get that when the EU release is out, anyhow.

Finished the prologue and first two maps, some quick notes:

-Either the game randomizes the RN string each time you restart a map, or they opted to use something else for the pathfinding AI this time, because I couldn't get a consistent RN string with the RNG abuse trick.  I was trying to figure out if the game uses one or two RNs to calculate hit, but without a consistent string and with the savestates not working on no$gba, I couldn't get an answer.

-Marth being the only one who can get items from a village caught me by surprise, ended up missing out on a Steel Bow because I didn't realize it at first.  I'd be more disappointed if I were actually using any archers right now.

-The higher move rates really screw over the usefulness of Knights in this game.  When basic unmounted classes have 7 move and Cavs/Peg Knights have 9, the 5 move on a Knight looks utterly pathetic.  I doubt most people will bother with them in this game, even though at least one has decent stats on paper.

-Pressing X to highlight all the tiles in enemy attack range is really nice.  Did FE10 have this, or is this a new feature?

-On the flipside, mounted units not being able to move again after performing any action, not even shopping, is a bummer.

-The number of units in this game is rediculous, even more so considering the gaiden chapter requirements (which I'm not bothering with this playthrough, except the last one).  More than FE6 even, with less to distinguish the PCs since there's no support conversations.  The game's just piling units on to me, and I'm only on the second (non-prologue) map!

FE10 and FE9 let you view enemy range, but you had to hit A on an enemy unit to see their individual range.

And yes, FE1[and by extension FEDS] has way too many PCs.

Lots of platformers mostly.

Loco Roco: still 100%ing levels.  Speed runs are sometimes fascinating, actually making use of the ability to split the character into multiples, and sometimes just avoid the interesting parts of the level and depend too much on randomness.  Levels in chapter 3 seem to have more interesting hidden areas in general, though, so that's good (I started the 100% sweep from chapter 1, where the secret stuff was more "lol, invisible wall", rather than "jump from moving platform to moving platform")

Warioland: Shake It: Treasure is at 100%; did that first because IIRC in Warioland II that unlocked the ultimate bonus level (which this game feels like it must have, given the ending >_>).  Missions are at 58% or so.  I'm sure I can get that into the 95% range given enough wasted spare time, though there's still a 5% that gets a "wtf how??" reaction from me.

Pretty much this, myself. I'm not quite as opposed to the theme as Rob is, but it does fall well within the "seen this a thousand times before, bored now" territory, as well as being a theme I generally dislike. Though I can certainly see looking at it from a "Materialism is bad" rather then just "technology is bad".

Enjoying Mother 3 quite a bit still. Just thinking I like EB better for now.

Oh, and up to Chapter 7, myself.

The materialism thread pretty much drops out in the last chapter, really... It changes the message from "materialism is bad" to "materialism is a gateway to technology which is bad."

P3 - Beaten! I guess I'll rant about it later, there's a lot of stuff I want to cover with this one. But I'll just say that Nitori was right: high levels make Takaya and Jin Puny even completely discounting Armageddon (which I only used on Nyx's final stage anyway).

Also, I never noticed it before but the school environments in every Persona game look exactly the fucking same. What's the deal with that?

This isn't really a design flaw... It's just how things seem to be in Japan. I've been around over a dozen schools in Japan and they definitely have their own set design here. Much like anything in Japan, there is a particular way of doing it. All Japanese schools are obviously based on some great master plan. >.>;;

Breath of Fire IV: Surprisingly good RPG plot. Fou-lu's still badass. Ershin/Master is awesome. Elina plot thread is still predictable-yet-enjoyable. Can't say much for the characters outside of Fou-lu and Ershin (Nina4 is okay-ish as far as female leads go), everyone else was just there. Notably, the manga does a great job with the better characters (Fou-lu, Master), but drops the ball on Nina. Ryuu is slightly better for actually having a speaking role, and Cray gets a little bit more personality but really doesn't seem anything like his in-game self. As for aesthetics, the Dragon design in BoF4 is still the best damn dragon design I've seen. Good art direction is appreciated. Won-qu/A-tur's design was also pretty spectacular. Fantastic sprite-work, too, especially in-battle - I can't say I've seen many sprite-based games that have done better-looking sprites. Even Disgaea and TWEWY don't sprites that move this fluidly. On-par with 2D fighting games in some respects.

Favorite aspect of the gameplay was the 'individual will' system which allowed characters that weren't in the active party to occasionally do things (Nina's healing cheer, Ershin's covering fire, etc.) I wish more games would implement this, as I hate it when characters just sit in my party - going to waste. As usual, any game where the characters are all decently unique from one another is a fun cast to see in the DL, though it's too bad a some of their uniqueness will never see light in the DL (the character-specific combos for example, not that they'd ever really need these... well, maybe Cray if ever really wanted magic damage?) The method of switching characters from the front and back rows was also an enjoyable feature that I'd completely forgotten about from the first time I played the game (back when it first came out). Better than FFX's system even, thanks to back-row characters regaining AP and the aforementioned IW skills.

Two playthroughs in my lifetime and I still don't quite get how the speed system works... just seems to be determined by whatever order you put in the commands and enemies get turns randomly?

For the record, I'd say BoF4 dragon designs >>>>> CC > Lunar >>> LoD. LoD dragon designs are just ugly.

CC has some fairly interesting and unique ideas for dragons (Water dragon), but also some hideous ones (Green). Lunar dragons are all Your-Basic-Dragon(C), so I guess I'd call them the standard. BoF4 is just so far ahead of all other RPG dragons that I've seen. Though Tales of Rebirth's look promising.

...can't think of any other RPGs that made a big deal of individual dragon designs...?

This isn't really a design flaw... It's just how things seem to be in Japan. I've been around over a dozen schools in Japan and they definitely have their own set design here. Much like anything in Japan, there is a particular way of doing it. All Japanese schools are obviously based on some great master plan. >.>;;

In BoF4, you decide in which order your PCs will go relative to the party. If you make a slow character go first and a fast character second, the slow character will go after all the enemies that are faster than him, but before the faster character who was put after him, for an example. So, you generally want your fast PCs leading the turn.

Except when you put Cray up front so that an enemy's turn doesn't interrupt your spell combo.

Radiata Stories dragons are pretty bland, but they have a comical art style, which helps them out, I suppose? I dunno, I think they're kind of ugly personally. Not near LoD-ugly, though.

Um isn't that explained in the manual (speed thing).  Thought it was fairly intuitive myself, but oh well.  There is a minor degree of randomisation in there anyway (combos can happen even if the enemy is faster, generally better to fiddle with the turn order to avoid having enemies in between them though).  You tempt me into playing it again though, I really do like BoF 4 a lot and it has been years now... might be close to 4ish.  Wow.  I think I have only played it once since getting my PS2.

Seconding the love for BoF 4 dragon design though, it is phenomenal and head and shoulders above the other games that try hard at it.  Shame they went for the jailbait crack whore look in 5.

I always thought Radiata Stories's dragons fit perfectly with the overall game design. I guess it could be a preference over a particular artist's style though.

Anyways, I have only been grinding in FFXII for an hour, because I need JP. I asked my friend Jeff in my art studio class what level he was at, and he couldn't remember, so I'm really just winging it. That aside, I really like Penelo, Basch and Vaan. I would probably be a fan of Ashe, but I haven't used her in battle, so she's not boasting any good stats being 10 levels under my average. >>
