WA:XF- Stage 1-13, I think? The one where you have to prevent the high MOV enemies from moving past you? Yeah, this one sucks. Guess I'll break down and get a Sentinel or two, but general bleh to this map. At least I got past the attempt to make you use Geomancers without actually having to use one.

PB - You know the maingame has been thoroughly broked when Marona has a 100-1~ turnsplit on story maps against the entire enemy force. Right now, I'm at episode 9, but my party is probably decked out enough to muscle past the aftergame's first half. Five-digit stat spread weapons are fun.

P4: Just beat the bathhouse. Kanji for best shadow ever by the way. Also, the addition to the dog in TV land has made it so that I finished Kanji's dungeon in one day. That and the Death card is amazing. Lv 24 now also, so it's time to gay it up with some Matador lovin! I just need to find a way to give him Mahama!!!!

FF3: Ugh. Just died to the damn rouge elf thief thing. And I was about to get some new jobs too! Fire breath can suck it!

Anyone care to tell me if leveling jobs affects other jobs when I switch or what? Or should I just focus on one job for the whole game. (assuming I feel that job is worthy of lasting that long.)

Job Levels play no impact on other jobs.  What they do, however, is make the transition from one job to the other easier, as does going into a Higher JLevel class makes things easier as well, by lowering the number of battles to get around Job Change sickness or whatever its called.

So a high level Black Mage would have an easier time becoming a Warrior than a low JLevel Black Mage.  Similarly, if Warrior is higher JLeveled, turning into it would require less fights.

So yeah, only effects Job Sickness and nothing else.

IOWs, a fine strategy is sticking with a Job you find effective for the long run.  FF3's Job System is different from FF5's in this regard.  FF5 promoting constant swapping, for the sake of making your characters more flexible, what with learning Skills and all that.  FF3's promotes sticking with classes for a while, to improve their overall worth, and Job Changing more exists to allow you to try your options and see what you like, or alternatively, swap for situational purposes (Dragoon vs. Garuda comes to mind.)  Its for this reason that FF3DS tried to make every class have a point, though, there are still some obvious upgrades from previous classes (Magus > Black Mage, for example), albeit that JLevels skew some of these (Black Belt is hit hard by this, for example, so Monk may end up being better anyway -_- )

Worth noting that FF3 NES had totally different character balance.  For example, Knight was strictly better than Fighter (aka Warrior) in all ways that matter in the original game, but in the DS version, Knight is more a Warrior variant than an upgrade.  The fundamental "Stick with one class" strategy was still effective in that version, mind, outside of the "Upgrade to better JObs if applicable" aspect.

Also, your Vitality affects the amount of HP a character gets at level up, and unlike all other job-related stat modifications, that effect is permanent. A character who gains 20 levels as a Knight and then turns into a Ninja (or whatever) will have more HP than if he'd spent 20 levels as a Scholar instead.

Everything else is determined by character level, current job, and the JL of the current job.

Really?  I find the problem is that there aren't enough rainy days.  Too many things that only happen in the rain.  Huge fish, capsule machines, etc.

I haven't actually messed with the capsule machines. Fishing...I've tended not to do a lot. Ironically, I now need one rainy day to catch a Huge Fish (this is necessary to finish the Hermit link, which I've got stuck at level nine) and there appear to be nothing but cloudy days left in the game. Arrrrgh.

Anywho, fused an Oni, which laughs at It's Britney, Bitch.  Boss that came next was easy also, although it had massive durability.  Also beat the extra boss for that dungeon.

Everyone laughs at that boss (I prefer the spoiler name of Radiohead, personally, but I also prefer to pretend that Britney Spears does not exist). I...almost think it was supposed to be a joke fight. The follow-up boss (the only spoiler name I can think of for this one is Kilroy) does indeed benefit massively from having no weaknesses. He's going to last a long time no matter what.

Teddie fucking wins.  That is all.

THIS. So much fucking THIS.

~

P4: %#@*&#%^@$@$#*&#%@@. Spoiler-laden translation is in tiny font below.

God fucking dammit, P4, I was one session away from maxing out her link. ONE. ARGH. Note to other players if they happen to be reading this in spite of spoilers: max out Expression early since Justice and Hierophant are unavailable after October. At least I'd already finished Hierophant.

So, that's two links I've screwed myself out of.

Recently maxed: Moon, Magician, Empress (damn, that one soaked up a lot of cash), Fool and Star. Judgement is obviously going to be maxed through plot, but that'll probably be the last one I finish. I went ahead and checked a FAQ to avoid having to dodge the Bad End clusterfuck again (more on this later) and it turns out there's not much time left in the game. Certainly not enough to plow through five levels (most of the unfinished links are sitting in this range). Thought I'd have some time to burn before the end, a la P3, but no, it is not to be. What sucks is that half of the PCs are among the unfinished links, and you need them maxed to upgrade their personas (I would've focused on them from the beginning if I'd known this). Still, I got two out of the three PCs I'm most likely to use in my final party finished, so that's something.

Just fused Loki. Shame I didn't manage to get Ice Boost on it, but Ice Amp + Nifleheim should prove broken enough. Compendium completion = 73%.

Plotwise, stomped NARF (New Age Retro Flasher. It will totally make sense when you see it). Good fight; Quad Convergence makes for a nifty elemental spoiler if people decide the thing's rankable. December happenings in spoiler text:

Well, Adachi's better at the whole obfuscating stupidity thing than Ikutsuki was, I'll give him that much. Dedicated sociopath privately laughing at the misfortune of others. He even echoes the Joker! "I only gave him a little push." Still, I have to wonder how his true nature didn't become obvious earlier given his apparent tendency to try to force himself on women. I mean, he did this twice, and the first time he didn't go in with any intention of killing the target, so it stands to reason that the woman could've said something to other people about how much of jerkass he really was. Which doesn't gel at all with how careful he was to seem harmless in the rest of the game. Oh well, guess this is where I just say "Persona plot" and move on.

As for the bad ending: what the hell, Atlus? It's one thing to include a fake ending that you can get earlier than the real one by answering a question wrong. It's quite another to make it hinge on a long series of multiple choice questions after an unskippable, twenty-minute cutscene. I just went and FAQ'd it after screwing up that concatenation of failure twice just to avoid having so sit through it again. Moreover, the bad ending ignores all the interdimensional craziness that the good ending apparently wants you to fix. Which, uh...yeah. "No, Inaba isn't going to be dragged into another dimension, but that's only because you didn't get far enough into the game to learn about the possibility in the first place." Altering reality for the sake of avoiding Good End spoilers. Way to go, Atlus.

In sum: it's 2008, Atlus, sceneskip is not a luxury feature these days.

Games I'm playing for the rest of 2008: None.

I left my damn bookbag with my games in it at my dorm, and can't get to them until the next semester. So all the games I've been playing are locked away for the next two weeks.

God damn it.

All I have to play right now are games I've lent to my friends. I have my copy of Shadow Hearts, and a friend's copy of Disgaea. Oh, and KOF 2006 since I saw it at EB Games for 10 bucks. Joy.

(New Age Retro Flasher. It will totally make sense when you see it).

The battle music is even called New World Fool.

FF Fighter that is Nomura ARPG in disguise- Onion Knight and Cloud of Darkness is BRUTAL after proper upgrade. Cloud is up there too. Needs to tweak Jecht more, but he seems to be flawed the same way the Ulty does. And Golbez is such a nice guy, I mean he really is. Oh, and Ishida is sexy.

Are they constant?

P4: Up to Void Quest, which is awesome. Less awesome is Ice-healer's out of the box capabilities. He's like 2x Weak to Lightning when there are enemies spamming Maziongas on the first dungeon floor, which comes in groups with only weak versus dark and they themselves are weak versus Fire...meaning that Yukiko is going to be far better in those particular battles anyways. Yuck. Granted, the fact that Yukiko's S-Link is at 9 is likely enough incentive to keep using her anyways.

PB - Coasting along. Notable things are: Walnut still heavily indulges in HAHAHAHA.png and Ash has a 22k Attack Sword. Also pondered DL Marona under my interps for half an hour. This ended with me needing to lie in bed for a while.

Pokemon Ranger 2: Beat this a couple of days back. The core gameplay's decent, but it gets repetitive after a while since there's little in the way of variety. I don't think it'd be worth more than $20 or so except to the most diehard Pokenut, especially since the event Pokemon can only be obtained once per cart IIRC.

Game was surprisingly difficult at points; I had two resets on the Rampardos boss and had to look for help on Gamefaqs boards. Multi-Pokemon fights could also get pretty difficult if they covered each other well with movement and/or attacks; two fights that stand out for difficulty are the Jolteon/Vaporeon/Flareon fight in the final dungeon and the Ampharos/Electrode fight in the Darkrai mission.

Final Fantasy III: Just beat Giant Rat. I had one L3 charge on my 3 Black Mages, which was enough to tear off over 3/4 of his HP; the second round finished him off easily enough.

Dissidia is in an odd place. Too much of an RPG to be a competitive fighter but too much of a fighting game for it to be at all rankable in the DL. I think it's fun though.

P4: Up to Void Quest, which is awesome.

You have no idea how truly awesome it is until you've seen the boss. Apparently, being the most stylish dungeon in the game wasn't good enough, so they went and gave it the most badass boss ever too.

~

P4: Holy shit, a rankable boss! A crappy--and spoilerific--one, but hey, it's something. Also fought Psychedelic Eyeball (or Eye In the Sky, for you Alan Parsons fans). Much better fight. Got my ass killed once because of stupidity (why yes, let's have the main cast Dekaja while the boss is charging up for overkill) and once because my Dekaja/kunda/Matarukaja persona got its weakness hit at a very inconvenient time. Came back with those spells on a persona without weaknesses, didn't have too much trouble (though I did run out of SP near the end). Levels were low-mid seventies, party lineup included both healers and the final PC. Still might go back and refight it, though, after using up the spare days before the deadline (since...I fought it on Dec. 13, and the game zooms right up to Christmas Eve immediately after you've beaten it). I do have two PCs sitting at link level six, after all. I...don't think I could quite finish one within the ten days or so I have to spare, but it might be worth a shot.

Personawise, the MC is rockin' out with Scandinavian death metal trio Asgardia. Thor brings the high voltage, Loki brings the chill grooves, and Surt brings the burning flames of RAGNAROK. Awww yeah, ain't nobody passing up a party with these bad boys. Also catch some guest vocals from Daisojou to lighten the mood, and Atropos to charge up yo' mind and blow you away. Awww yeah.

FF Fighter that is Nomura ARPG in disguise-

Onion Knight is so ridiculously wrong that I am lacking word to describe it now. I never thought Puchi Meteor would be this broken at first. His physicals work just like Sephy, very quick, but lags if missed, and also has less attack radius compare to Sephy. But since he can combo into HP attack with his brave attack, his physicals actually end up a lot better. But still, kinda dangerous due to those lag, so I primarily use them when I am countering. On magic, he isn't a full mage, so he lacks those range ignoring snipers or those huge AOE spell. But Thunder and Puchi Meteor chase after the enemy soooooo well. In the maximum difficulty, where computer just cheats, Puchi Meteor still manage to have decent accuracy, which says a lot. Thunder also has decent range, and most importantly, it is a an non counterable projectile, and it can connect into HP damage with Flare, joy.

And my sweet Kuja, how do I put it.... pretty hard to use. Except a few moves, all of his Brave attacks are all identical, except the starting hit, which would be various form of Flare or Holy that aims at different range. And base on the range between the enemy he'll perform four types of follow ups. 1. A series of Holy that blows enemy upward in clsoe range and follows by a Chase sequence. 2. A series of Holy striking enemy afar in a circle. 3. Press into melee with an orb of Flare. 4. Knocking enemies upside down from afar with multiple Flare.
Now, the problem is that.... the starter with long range all attracts enemy into melee range, so it is hard to get have a ranged starter connect into ranged follow up. And Kuja does not like enemy in melee range, as his moves are all slow to initiate. So I end up using Snatch Shot the most, which is a starter with long range chase Flare, since it just hits that far, the enemy wouldn't be attracted close enough and trigger 4., but takes some skill to pull it off. But then, since Kuja's Brave attacks can't chain into Hp attacks, and his Brave attacks aren't that reliable, I often just skip right into using his HP attacks.
Hp damage is where Kuja got better. Flare Star is GOOOOD. Despite being a melee move, Flare Star is insanely good. It creates a field of Flare, it has a huge hit box, high priority on top of being very fast, and the most evil part, it grants you a brief movement of free aerial movement that allows you to press the attack onto the enemy however you want.
Outside Flare, he also has Ultima, the typical range ignoring spells that let's not being completly hopeless in front of super fast fighter like Sephy and Tidus... just he learns it so terribly late. Hm? Holy Star? What Holy Star?
