SRW4: Completed 18 chapters. 18, in particular, was a pain in the ass, because I didn't realize that after killing the wimpy boss at the end, that I would have 6 turns to get my entire team out of a hugenormous base. A feat which slow ass mechs without the Speed seishin (Mazinger Z, Daimos, and a few others that were positioned poorly) could. Not. Accomplish.

So I let them die, thereby spending a few thousand to not have to redo the mission. Take that stupid baron.

So many good super robots that are basically the same thing, though Dancouga is notable for not being able to hit anything ever and having pilots with crappy SP pools. I think Kouji or generic main character are my top aces right now, since Mazinger Z is a silly monster of a machine and the Gespenst's Neutron Beam is also pretty amazing. Others are doing well, though, notably other combiners like Zambot 3 and Combattler V. Daitan 3 is also good, though the name is misleading - the 3 here indicates that it can turn into a fighter (good for its high movement) and a tank form (good for... something, probably), and it only has one (SP and good seishin loaded) pilot. Daimos isn't bad, but Kazuya needs the SP to use Motivate more readily, because it really can't hurt much without a sizable morale boost, unlike Mazinger Z's super cheap "Buresto Faiya". Getter has survivability issues, since it's frailer than other supers, and even Getter 2 has evasion issues at low morale because of its size. Really wishes it had its split ability from later games, though I have high hopes for when I finally get Getter Robo G.

As a real type fan, I've made use of characters that probably have no business in my team. I use lots of Gundam characters, in particular. Amuro is doing fine in the Mk. II, though it's mostly to keep him leveled up for when he finally gets Nu Gundam, which I expect some serious power from. Fa... has Trust, and Methuss has a repair function. I'm sure there are better pilots for it (Emma for example) but I have a soft spot for her, so I feed her plenty of kills to keep her vaguely useful. In fact, I have Emma in use, and in Gundam Classic no less, though she's pretty much going to be dumped in the next few chapters. Kou getting GP-03 was nice; I don't get why his units have such high Movement, but he's nicely evasive and has good range and firepower, so he can tear across maps to reach important targets without wasting SP on Speed. Can't scratch Aura Battlers, sadly, between its lack of flight, inaccurate bazooka, and otherwise having beam weapons, and there are plenty of them. Fortunately, Dunbine is pretty much there to kill others of its kind, and I'm using Nie in a Botun as well (I think he's looking better than Marvel right now? I'll switch if that sounds wrong). High speed + high pilot evasion + small size + having sharp. AND Image. Good luck hitting those things. Zeta Gundam is also a great real, because while its not a whole lot harder to kill than other mobile suits and only has one standout weapon, 2400 power on a reasonable energy cost REALLY stands out. Breaks Aura Bar and Beam Coat and the like on low Armor enemies, great range, accurate... it's basically projectile Breast Fire on your standard hard-to-hit Gundam.

Hathaway in a GM III has also done nicely via repeated miracle dodges and the innate coolness of GMs.

Graon is my preferred battleship, since it's basically the Argama with like 4 times the HP and more armor and less reliance on beam weapons that only work on half the enemies I fight, what with all the Aura Battler Dunbine and Heavy Metal L-Gaim enemies. Stupid Tomino and your stupid shows with mechs that can't be hurt by beam weapons...

Bosses aren't bad so far aside from having to figure out how to drive Dragosaur on land, what with all the Rage and Flash and Autohit that even my super pilots have. Raged Sun Attack from Daitarn 3 tears a lot of new ones in a lot of enemies, and Banjo is awesome to boot.

Haven't had to go through the silly storyline either, though I'm not 100% sure that I'm happy about it. Menu-only translation, sadly.

Do any of the GBA SRWs have menu patches? Really don't feel like having a half dozen guides on my computer just to know what the menu is trying to tell me and what robot I'm using and what my seishins do...

I think it's R that does? R or A. J has a full patch in the works, but fat chance of seeing it anytime soon.

And, of course, if you can emulate PSX, there's AG now.

Dissidia: Just finished the story mode, including Shade Impulse and all that.  I guess this means I must unlock the two guests and do their side stories soon! I also have to raise nonTerra characters (primarily, Firion, Golbez and Emperor), and such.

Anyway, not understanding the plot = ;_;.  Though I could pick up what was happening in the ending, just would be nice to know what each character was saying.  They were tossing arbitrary references even in that final FMV (like a random white feather flies into Squall's hand...gee, I wonder what THAT could be referencing <_<)...now if only I knew what the hell Terra was holding in her hand (Video Quality sucked since the Game was skipping and I had to use a REVERSE video on Youtube...it looked like a White Pearl though...)

The ending credits was just...about the best you could do for a game like Dissidia.  For a game that's paying homage to 20 years of the series that saved Square's ass from bankruptcy, having that one scenery shot at the end was just a nice warm feeling followed by the whole Ending Medley (I REALLY didn't think they'd go that far, but it shows how far they went to really give you a feel that its the entire main stream series, at least as far as FF10, crossed over and what not.)  I'm being purposely vague to avoid spoiling everything, even though I kind of did in chat regarding what was in the Ending Medley.

I WILL say that its nice to see that the Game Rips missed a song or two, since "Final Fantasy" did manage to appear; guessing they couldn't rip songs from FMVs.

Oh, beat entire Shade Impulse using only Terra.  She hit level 100...when she started at 29.  why?  Cause It was an EXPx2 day <_<;
I must say, her late level abilities are O_o though.  Meltdown is awesome, Meteor and Graviga are great ways to get brave damage or keep the enemy tied up; now to master Holy Combo so I can toss Ultima into the mix.
Needless to say, Chaos just kind of exploded, though, I did try to futz around in the fight a bit before just killing him, to see what he can do...and I can safely say that Terra is damn well suited for that fight, and I can see why someone like Cloud would have issues; definitely a fight that dodge and sniping would benefit from, and not someone you want to attack head on (so I expect someone like Onion Knight or Firion to work as well, but Squall or WoL probably has some issues)

Snow, on DDS2 plot.  No, just no.  It is still better than Code Geass.  So yeah fuck you (note I haven't played much of DDS2 and this is not about DDS2).

Rob, man you really have to play the game.  There is so much awesome in it.  There is a safehouse where someone has written "We are the real monsters" to which there is replies of "Have you been outside?  Retard" "I hope you die" and the calls for death on the first writer continue on from there.  It is great.

R does, yes.  Alpha has a menu patch as well, but that's PSX.  And of course the aforementioned AG.

I don't know if you've played OG/OG2, but those are officially translated as well.

FF fighter that is Nomura ARPG in disguise-
Finally got all reports.... Nomura, you seem to be having too much free time to come up with crap like this. Ugh, if not for the secret end, I'll never collect that shit.
And get all the initial 20 characters to level 100. Is it just me that Ulti turned out to be a trap fighter than Emperor? And that Golbez is a better counter player than Exdeath?

Mana Khemia - Just run through Mana Ruins exterior for mining quest and then again to get all the gear.  Night time is just becoming a bore, but it gives me time to read WoW theorycraft and mc analysis of FFT, so that is fine for now, it is longer downtime or mroe backtrack inducing than anything I can think of off the top of my head than is in WoW (For a repreated mechanic that you encounter in one sitting) though, so it is fail.  SubMMO mechanics are bad, kay?  Kay.  All crafting needs to be available in the one room in future and I wold appreciate the ability to mass produce regular items with cheap materials without effecting the quality of the one I have banked (AI series did this on every entry).  Sure you can still do it with weapons/armour/accessories, but I really don't care or mass produce those.  Ultimately it comes down to it is just easier to buy some of the more basic alchemy ingredients, which frankly defeats the goddamned point of the whole Alchemy thing.

Alchemy system and plot are substandard and just plain worse than AI2.

That said, battle system is a fun mish mash and advancement on AI2 and 3 systems, I miss some of the variability of AI3, but I don't miss some of the other stuff that went with it so meh.  Also still easy as fuck of course.

Oh yeah everone needs to stop hyping the Grow Book now and stop referring to it as Sphere Grid ++++ because it fucking isn't.  It is FF12 License board that unlocks slightly differently.  Sphere Grid has customisation.  License board is just grab everything.  Grow Book is just grab everything.  I like it and all (License board is pretty functional and inoffensive), but it is nothing like Sphere Grid functionally.  Oh it looks the same, but that means absolutely zero because it is game mechanics we care about when defining things, not how they are presented to us.

So yeah, so far it is fun, but a bit overhyped by some circles of the DL.  Standard Gust affair to be honest without any of the experimentation with stuff that made AI 1 and 2 fun, it isn't even very good as generic slice of life anime trope overload that it is.  So meh.

Verdict so far re: comparison to other Gust games and whether or not NEB should like totally play them, same as I have always said, they are fluff and probably worth picking up sometime if you ever play one and enjoy it a bit, but wouldn't prioritise them.  Why does NEB get special focus on this?  I dunno, I think I have talked with him specifically regarding Gust stuff on a few too many occasions so it sticks in my head.  I could reccomend it same for Super but his taste in games is fail.

They're exactly like FE and N1 games in their own way. If you love the style of one you should play most of them, and if you don't, pass on the rest.

I dunno. Early dungeons always seemed short enough to beat before nightfall, and later on, nighttime combat doesn't resemble dentistry like it does in the early goings. I thought it shook out pretty well in the end. MK is thus far the only RPG with a day/night mechanic where I can say the game was better for having it.

Yeah, that's part of the "losses" from the secret split, as I see it. It kinda sucks, but Zeorymer ends up forced for about 40% of the time you have it, so it's not...soooooo bad. But yeah, there's a debate there.

MK - Nearly finished Chapter 4.

There's a lot of truth to what Grefter states, though I don't really mind day/night much. Don't think the game is better for having it, either, though. Not really impressed with how the game does dungeon design; too much retreading without the enemies updating. It encourages me to skip a good deal of fights and I dunno, I generally don't WANT to skip fights in games with remotely decent battle systems.

Speaking of battle systems, this one seems very decent, certainly... just... only that. Options in battle are a bit too limited so far; substituting is great, but I'm still waiting for PCs to have real skillsets. Oh sure, some of them can heal, and Nikki can do some insane damage/status if I use one of my limited shots of Bear Homerun or whatever, but yeah, not really impressive. Surprised at the lack of access to MT, elemental damage, and status so far (the middle exists but is overpriced). The switching mechanic, though, is cool.

Plot continues to not exist, anime character interaction is not my thing, and people need to stop hitting on the main. Fuck anime.

THE TICK is awesome but they haven't been running with him as much since he became a PC. ;_; Pamela I am going to assume gets hype for things that come later, because otherwise she is shockingly boring considering her design. KILLER STUFFED BEAR is cool at least; don't waste it!

Pamela might be interesting if the exact same character hadn't been in every other Gust game (She is a running reference and it is tired and old), unless they do something really interesting with the character I am going to drown people for the hype.

Day/Night cycle adds -nothing- though Cap.  The only thing it changes is stuff from gather points, whiiiich have like no goddamned enemies near them.  Sure I could be smashing the shit out of night fights now if I wanted (Which I do from time to time just because you know it is there and something to do), but they give me nothing.  It is just stronger enemies with no benefit from all I can tell.  Make enemies drop double the items or something, I don't care.  Just give us something worth shit for doing night garbage and I will agree it has a purpose other than a boring timesink.

Yeah retreaded enemies are an annoying flaw that carries over from AI3 (which is the first one to really do the run through same dungeons over and over thing), at least you don't need to kill them for ingredients like you did AI3 though.

The problem with the License Board was that it made characters carbon copies of one other, since they all used the same board AND started right next to each other on it.  The Grow Book doesn't have this problem, which is why it's misleading to compare it to the License Board.  If you think it's worse than the Sphere Grid, fine, but it's more like that than the License Board.

For all that I agree that the AP gains needed to be somewhat less and the boosts somewhat more powerful to make you pick and choose for most of the game.

I'd suggest this one to NEB over the others because it is the one with more challenge (unlike AI2/3/At) as well as a non-generic battle system (like AI1).

Extremely frustrated at Alpha Gaiden for a moment. Spoilers ahead!

I decked out massively with costs to upgrade my mechs, no problems there. They dodge like hell hath no, and only Gengham can actually harm any of them reliably. (save for Diana, but with something as big as the Soleil, dodging would be nothing short of a miracle)

The problem? I have 13 turns, 4 of which are used by GETTING to the boss. Then the boss is flanked by two units that support to protect him... meaning I need to either use Map Weapons or Unison Attacks to reliably take out his guardians and then him. (counters work, too, but I dislike them because the boss also gets a turn to attack :C)

However, the Boss has something like 50,000 HP, where my strongest attack (which I can use only once thanks to SP costs) can only be used once, and hits for 12,000 HP. Anytime I declare the end of my turn, the boss just heals up half of his HP... and if I hit him below half HP, he just regens back up again.

I'm guessing the key hint is where he tells Loran that if both Turn Gundams use up their EN the world may be saved, but it's a gigantic bother trying to get HIS energy down, and at the same time try to get Loran's EN to 0, too.

Snow, on DDS2 plot.  No, just no.  It is still better than Code Geass.  So yeah fuck you (note I haven't played much of DDS2 and this is not about DDS2).

This isn't about quality, really. It just has that Code Geassy quality of just going along for the ride and trainwrecking it up because it can. Because yes, CG is far worse than DDS2 for writing quality and is far more ridiculous (which says something, DDS series writing is pretty atrocious along with being shamelessly nonsensical), but the spirit is more or less the same.

NINJA EDIT: Hell, the game even has intense fondness for that "editor's digest" approach where they try to cram in entire arcs worth of development into one-two scenes that CG loves to do.

Speaking of which!

DDS2 - Heat was a bit of a wimp, although he thought it was cute to start dodging late in the fight. Regardless, two PCs with Zionga and one with Mediarama = lol pressure, unless he decides to stack debuffs madly and hit weakness all the time... which he really didn't.

Also, the cat is the goddamned best character in DDS period.

ToS2: Chapter 3, Triet Ruins.  Currently using a Fenrir, loaded down with fire resist gear so it can tear things apart without needing to worry so much about it's weakness, and a Nixie with a decent set of water spells.  As for the PCs, Emil looks to be leaning towards an anti-air skill set, while Marta's an AoE ground fighter with a few support spells.

As for the temps?  Nice skillsets, but the stats and the locked levels suck.

Hmmm. Your complaints make a lot of sense. It particularly ties in with how closely MK reins in your tweaking/battle freedom for pretty much the first half of the game. Your skillset doesn't start getting interesting until C6, and the game just sorta trickles the mechanics until them, which makes things just take longer to pick up. It's nice for a RPG beginner, but when you're already experienced with the genre and its gimmicks, it's a straitjacket.

Bard: Yeah, that's definitely not a team built for raw power. Who's waiting in the wings with a good enough level/upgrade set to swap in for, say, Puru2 or Sandrock? Shin Getter? Dancougar? Great Mazinger?

Okay, how can I put this. Keep in mind this is no insult to you, and this isn't to make you feel emo. But -

Put bluntly, your team is poor. There are a bunch of SRWs where you can use basically anyone you want and not get punished by it. @G is one of them... unless you do what you did and use only units you like randomly and utterly fail to care about other synergy and effective units. You can use off non-good people, sure, but revolving your entire team around them is a baaaaaaaaaaaaad idea. Some key PCs you'd do well to use are sorely missing (no Shin Getter? That alone would help your offense massively, even though it's frail. No Walker Gallier? Jiron is an absolutely wonderful pilot, and the Walker Gallier has some pretty excellent weaponry and huge versatility with its two forms. BURNING in the Dendrobium? What the hell, man, you should've slapped Amuro or Quattro into it, it's a mech with excellent durability - both concrete and evade - and great weaponry, it's basically a steal and you waste it with a shoddy pilot. No YFs? Macross people are excellent in @G, using at least one of them is a great idea, and they have deceptively good offense. No Zeta Gundam? The Zeta is arguably the damned best Real in the whole game, and the game hands it over to you early. No Great Mazinger? Didn't the Xabungle arc teach you that the Great Mazinger is a very good mech? It's not top tier, sure, but it'd certainly be an ocean better than some of the people you have, since you have so many bottom-of-the-barrel units saddled along), and you have way too much redundant filler. Okay, let's go for a breakdown, unit per unit.

V2 Assault Gundam - Is very very good, this is not the problem.

Gundam Sandrock Custom - There are games where Quatre is good. This is not exactly one of them. I used Quatre in my @G playthrough, but that was openly due to plain fangirlism, and I dumped -loads- of cash onto the mech. I doubt you loaded as much moolah on Quatre as I did, and even after I did, he was just average. His niche as a Resupply whore also doesn't work very well in @G. Granted, if you need a resupplier, he's probably your unit of choice, since he has actual survivability and doesn't fail horribly at killing grunts, but not all that great regardless.

Methuss - The Methuss really fails. There are good Repair units in @G, but Methuss is not one of them. Far from it, it's one of the worst units in the whole game. Fa is a worthless pilot, and the Methuss can't dodge, deal damage nor take a hit to save its life.

Turn A Gundam - It's good, but you should have a better pilot than Loran in it, honestly (although that may not be an option given your stage). It has a few nice niches, at least. Also, Gundam Hammer is your best damage with it? Where is Moonlight Butterfly?

Soleil - Eh, @G battleship.

Wing Zero Custom - It's a decent mech, although it needs focused babying towards EN and cash. However, slapping Noin onto it instead of Heero? Bad decision, Heero has notably better stats, more suited for the Wing Custom, and Soul. Considering how heavy on low-end units your team is, to boot, it feels like this was a poor overall decision.

Tallgeese - Worse than Wing Zero, pretty much. This isn't a compliment.

Vertigo - Fodderish. Not a good idea to use when you don't have the backup to excuse its usage, and it's a late joiner that needs cash to work. Caris is a good pilot, but you could slap him/her/it on a better mech instead of the vertigo.

Mazinkaiser - Arguably the best unit in the game, and I'd raise an eyebrow and whap you with a newspaper if you weren't using it.

Gundam XX - You didn't get the G-Bits, which completely kills the Gundam XX offensively. It's great for dodging, but a lot of Reals are, and Gundam XX has absolutely no reliable offense without G-Bits, while a bunch of those great dodgy Reals can deal actual damage. Not to mention you're not using Paula for the combined XX, but that wouldn't save the mech's offense outside of grunts anyway (it's more of a defensive junction). You can even use Satellite Cannon late without moon reliance, but that's so unreliable that... eh. The mech is probably a good candidate for the bench in this case.

GP03 Dendrobium - Burning? Quattro is given to you for free and he's a far better pilot. The Dendrobium does not work when you toss a crappy pilot in it.

Blugar - Pure resupply/repair unit in @G that can't deal or take damage in any way - not a good idea. Unit slots in @G are too valuable to use on units that are this frail and inept at slugfesting, and you don't need a whole lot of healing.

SUMO - Man, what is it with the Gundam fodder fixation? Harry isn't even that great a pilot.

Qubeley Mk II - See above. Puru is even a decent pilot, but the Qubeley Mk II is very much filler fodder. If you have better UC Gundam machines, put her into one of those instead. This also applies to most of the good pilots in poor machines you have, like Caris. Actually, don't you have the Neue Ziel? If you do, try that for, say, Caris, or put Amuro in the Zeta Gundam. Some pilot swapping may help a lot.

Nu Gundam HWS - I guess. Amuro is a good pilot, but the HWS is just okay.

R-Gun Powered - She's worthless, sadly. R-Gun Powered never upgrades ever and it's a poor machine in the boiling of eggs.

Blugar - Um, three resuppliers/repairers with paper durability and epic offense? That's impractical and clogs up slots that would be better used on units with actual durability or offense. I'm struggling to see where resupplying would even be useful on your team Wing Zero aside (serious EN guzzler, but he's more or less the only one who does it that badly in your team. The rest of the team either doesn't need the EN or just doesn't use it), and that's a lot of slots deployed for only one PC. Plus, if you focus your cash on the strong durability stats for your mechs (evade for the Reals, defense and HP for the supers), repair units tend to not see much use due to you suffering very little damage. Going for overkill healing doesn't improve your survivability more than plain stat optimization does in @G, possibly hindering it instead, since most of the repair units in the game are very frail. You probably should stick with the White Ark if you want a Repair unit that won't blow up if looked at funny, and you already have Quatre for Resupply (and he's the one with a shred of survivability). More than that may hamper your overall performance instead of helping it.

Mostly, you have a lot of bottom-tier units, and most of them are very frail, and there is a ton of better people you can slap in their stead, assuming they're not hopelessly underlevelled. Hell, even an underlevelled Banjo in Daitarn 3 would probably be a huge quality jump compared to the likes of Viletta and Jinguji.

NINJA EDIT: Also, if worst comes to worst, remember that experience in SRW scales Suikoden-style. So, you could gameover abuse the map for extra cash and levelling/upgrading the units that are behind, since the cash you gained also carries over on a gameover.
