As someone who's hosted this thing twice, I cannot stress how much of a pain in the ass it is to sort back through the threads to pick out the nuggets of actual information you need to have for oganizing through too much random chatter. I don't know that I'd call Rudy's -cheap-, but it's certainly not a bank-breaker for the quality of the food you get.

Anyway, I'm pretty much confirming at this point unless plane tickets spike skyward in the next few days (the 23rd-26th -is- confirmed, right?) since they're unusually cheap this year. Also yay for hotel.

We'll just have to have a Florida-based wintercon to make up for it. I can probably even host it, but I'll know more about that once I actually get back into the country.

Okay. I'm looking at tickets right now, and I've found a few things:

Austin Airport is actually practical for me to fly to, with single layover flights off a reasonable price (roughly the same as Houston). The flight times I've found are also highly compatible with my plans. So, this is bound to make the life of spinpires everywhere easier. -However-, there's a little detail that showed up here.

The flight I'm looking at has its layover in Atlanta. I'd arrive there roughly 6AM for a nearly five-hour layover. If I do take that ticket (I intend to, but I'm not sure if that flight will be around by February, which is when I'll buy the ticket), I have a question. Would the Iduns or the mcs be willing to wake up before the sun rises to waste time at Atlanta Airport for a couple hours with me? I figure it may as well be a cool opportunity for us to meet each other before the con. >_>

EDIT: Okay, not so roughly the same. Houston costs $200 less than Austin. Lemme check Fort Worth.

EDIT2: Forth Worth is even more expensive. Still tempted to go Austin just because of less layovers, though - that and spending four hours in Atlanta if Idun/mc feel like burning the midnight oil instead of one.

EDIT3: Right, I forgot that I already marked down Houston as my destination in my flight on the form I filled. Will have to do Houston. -However-, as long as I do Delta Airlines, I'll have an Atlanta layover. Thing is it'll be at 6AM regardless and only 1:40h long. Not sure if it's worth the bother for the girls then.

Given the way US airport security works, you wouldn't really be able to meet up with them anyway.  Security won't let you leave the security area and come back, and the girls won't be able to get in the security area without tickets.

If he has a layover then there is a good chance he is changing over from International terminal to a Domestic one which should give plenty of chances to catch up, but yeah keept that in mind anyway.

Possibly, now that you mention it I'm not sure how that would work.  Still, airport security here is anal as hell so I wouldn't count on it working out.

The thing about international layovers: they generally force you out of security, make you pick up your bag, and then push you back through security again.  Fortunately, America usually forces you through customs at your point of departure, not your point of arrival, so we shouldn't need to worry about customs, at least.

I'm up for driving to the airport to hang out for a couple hours.  But...1:40 transfer time, allowing half an hour to get off the first plane and collect your bags, then half an hour to get through security and onto your second plane...that leaves perhaps 40 minutes.  (And this is assuming Jo'ou is willing to cut it that close for getting back through domestic security).  Would I drive to the airport at 6am to see Jo'ou for 40 minutes?  Hmm...yeah, probably, if he's willing to cut his transfer really close to hang out.

I've ordered the custom cake for the con, from my culinary friend at work who does such things (and is quite awesome at it, you can check out some of her earlier works here or at her website).

While the design I've picked out for the cake is RPG-related, it's also going to remain a SEEKRIT until the con - but input on the type of cake to go under the decoration is up for discussion. I'm getting a half-sheet cake (which should be plenty); currently the idea is to do it as half yellow cake, half her recipe for double chocolate stout cake - I don't particularly like chocolate cake myself, but this is excellent stuff.

If you've got other preferences or concerns in the way of cake, though, post 'em up.
