Gwyn, Hiro's grandfather, is a simple man. He himself was an archaeologist of the land, and tutored Hiro by telling him stories of the past. Gwyn gave Hiro his adventuring spirit, and no doubt sheltered Hiro in his youth using his power and defense shattering magics, group and solo healing, and mighty mace thwacks. While his grandson has far exceeded him in battle talent, Gwyn is more than capable enough to fight in the DL and win.
