Season 55, Week 2
Dhoulmagus
(Dragon Quest 8)

Comedy clashes with gothic horror! The jester Dhoulmagus is going against the dreadful Lord of the Undead, Brahms! With this terrible battle in the offings, what place is there for humor?! It's a pity, such a pity! Dhoulmagus will have to fix this and fix it fast! He'll need to bring all his tricks to the table this time! In particular, all of his magical tricks! For the Lord of the Undead simply can't take much magic. Dhoulmagus will have to throw fire and ice, wings and tentacles to put Brahms down! But the important thing is - he can do it. Even if he takes a Bloody Curse, he can endure it, shift into his true form, and promptly lay Brahms out for the brutally funny win.

The court of the undead has many things, but not an evil, hideous clown. Well, after Brahms emerges victorious, he may have a proposition for Dhoulmagus. And surely Brahms emerging victorious is the only result! The lord of the undead doesn’t lose to a bottom level minion. Dhoulmagus may have some magical options, but they aren’t very strong. Brahms’ excellent physical durability should help him shrug off Dhouly’s stronger physical attacks with an ease unknown to the rest of the field, and it won’t be long before his bone-crushing famed Bloody Curse comes into play, ensuring that the dread clown falls quickly and that the Vampiric King gets the last laugh.

Monkeyfinger
Dhoulmagus's very participation in the DL is something of a legal gray area. It is common knowledge by now that in the only recorded battle Dhoulmagus participated in, he was being lent power by Rhapthorne. No, more than that. The two were inexorably tied together. That kind of thing gets a lot of characters rejected when people petition to have them ranked, but Dhoulmagus's charisma and flair bought him an exception. But not an airtight one. There is still someone with the power to keep Dhoulmagus out of competition, and that is his benefactor - Rhapthorne.

Usually Rhapthorne is happy enough to steer Dhoulmagus into the arena and let him fight when they temporarily reform their bond, but Rhapthorne's last opponent, False Althena, being a contestant this season threw a wrench into things.

Did Rhapmagus go seeking FA to get revenge over his loss? To plan more carnage? To just reminisce and shoot the shit? We don't know yet. All we know so far is that Brahms showed up and his opponent didn't, so he won by default.
