Season 48, Week 5
Oulan
(Suikoden II)

One should only resort to fighting when protecting someone else, they say. However, Oulan has her entire reputation to back up with this one fight. This will be quite an impressive fight for a variety of reasons as well! Oulan and her opponent are both females, a gender normally not thought of as competent warriors. Both of them are respected members of their own military and both of them have the fiery red hair to match their personalities. It may seem like Oulan is at a disadvantage against Titania's ability to throw axes, but never fear! If Titania attempts some sort of ranged assault, Oulan can close the distant with her powerful Rune attacks and seal the match in her favor.

Having proven that even the humble axe is a weapon that benefits from skill over pure strength, the vice captain of the Greil Mercenaries moves on to match blade against fist with a fellow red headed warrior woman. While she and Oulan would probably get along rather well outside of the arena, both women are far too professional to put anything but their best effort forward in this final match for the championship. Unfortunately for Oulan, Titania's best effort is going to prove a bit too much to handle. With her quite accurate axe blows and the ever present threat of counterattacks over the opponent, the elegant paladin firmly has the upper hand in this very straightforward fight.

Titania knew she was in for a difficult fight, so she decided to take a page out of Bartre's book and give the write-something-meaningful-on-your-weapon-and-see-what-happens strategy a try. Hey, it couldn't hurt, right? It certainly sounded much more appealing than just trying to stab Oulan between constant pummelings.

Ike tried to talk her out of it, of course, but his arguments fell on deaf ears; Titania had already set her mind to it, and she was far too stubborn to back out of it now.

Imagine his surprise, then, when this hare-brained strategy actually worked. As soon as the match began, Titania vanquished her opponent in just one blow. The last thing Oulan saw before Titania's axe split her skull in two was the message "Light championship" scrawled on the blade.

Some people argued that it was the axe to the face that actually defeated Oulan instead of the Bartreism written on the blade, but others swore that writing stuff on their weapons was actually a really good idea. It was a bit of a stretch, sure, but this is the DL and far stranger things have happened here -- like Oulan mysteriously changing into a potted cactus after the match, for example. No one is entirely sure why that happened, but the general consensus is that Bartre is involved somehow.

On a related note, not only have the Greil mercenaries won their first championship, but the entrance to their base is now decorated with a very tasteful and stylish potted cactus.
