Season 22, Week 2
Flare
(Suikoden IV)

Talk about an easy debut match. While the Black Wizard may specialize in status spells of all kind, their questionable accuracy will be reduced even further against Flare's above average magical defense. This spells bad news for her opponent, since Flare's decent physical, backed by her ninja-like speed, will be painful when hitting the Wizard's notoriously frail frame. Even worse, her Wind Rune and its hellishly accurate Wind of Sleep can deny the Black Wizard from ever getting a turn, while the Shreddings and Healing Winds supports her well in case of a slugfest. Looks like the Obel Princess has a clear path to the second round.

Status slinging at its finest may not what you'd expect from a Light, but then Black Wizard is not your typical Light. Hailing from a line of wizards that includes Lulu and Rydia, Black Wizard possesses the same top quality skillset as his successors in the dark arts. Status upon status is open for Black Wizard, all of which spell doom for a Suikoden character who relies on healing and status of her own to win fights. Black Wizard's excellent magic defense renders Wind of Sleep worthless, and Flare (on Flare!) is as painful as one would expect from the little mage whose sorcery helped tear down a creature as powerful as Chaos.

Through the history of the entire line for those that have succeeded the black mage, there has always been one question foremost on the minds of observers both distant and near:
What lies under those robes and pointed cap?
Thanks to certain... incidents, though, the Duelling League has found out.
The horrors contained therein are too shocking to describe.
Fortunately for Flare, however, she got generous amounts of whipped cream in her eyes in that same incident, and with even less protection than usual, a lucky arrow from the Princess felled the Wizard in a single blow.
Which isn't to say she didn't suffer afterwords. But that's a tale for another day.
