Season 3, Week 3
Tengaar
(Suikoden Series)

While many reasons can be given as to why Tengaar shall win, all she needs is one, Canopy Defence. With this spell, Tengaar can nullify one magic spell, which means that Nanami will have to waste precious time busting through Canopy Defence, and the charge time that follows will give Tengaar the time she needs to attack with her Earthquake, and her knives.

The Shrine Maiden of Hai-Lan bucked the trend of VP mages to do... very poorly, in the eyes of the RPGDL voters, with her victory over Cyan last round. Can she do it again? Nanami doesn't lay claim to the versatility or the power that some of her Flenceburg colleages have, relying almost entirely on Fire Storm in her fights. That's probably just as well, as Fire Storm's short charge time is just what Nanami needs if she hopes to wait out Tengaar's Canopy Defence anti-magic shield. Still, she'll have an uphill battle, since she's by no means durable, and lacks Heal... and her opponent has even stronger attack magic than she does. Her only chance is to outlast Tengaar, since while the Warrior Village mage can run out of magic, Nanami can not.

"Ow, ow ow!" said Ronfar.

"Oh, for goodness' sake, don't try to move," said Hiro to his friend.

Ronfar cast an angry glance back at him. Confined to his bed since last week's unfortunate confrontation with a certain Toran-born Earth magess, he was in a bad mood. "I'm angry, Hiro," he said. "And not just angry like I was at Zophar, for wrecking the world and all. No, this is PERSONAL."

"Don't you think you're taking this a tad too badly?" said Hiro, with a sigh. "You should have known what you were getting into, there. In fact, I seem to recall warning you."

"Badly?" said Ronfar. "She personally attacked me without provocation, before the fight!" Hiro snorted, but Ronfar continued. "And then the judges have the nerve to give her the win, before the fight, disqualifying me! And then there's the emotional trauma I suffered. Rejection's never pleasent, especially in Earthquake form. And that," said Ronfar with a smile. "Is why I want you to do something for me."

"I'm not getting caught up in your crazy schemes," said Hiro.

"Oh, but I can make it worth your while," replied the Larpan gambler. "Two simple words: Lucia bromides."

"I have the real thing. Not interested."

"Jean bromides?" Ronfar continued. Hiro shook his head. "I've got them all, you know. How about Lemina? Or... Leo?"

"Enjoy your bedrest, Ronfar," Hiro got up and turned to go.

"Wait," said Ronfar. "Sorry, pal. I didn't want to do this, but..." Ronfar reached under his bed, and pulled out a bromide.

"What... is... THAT?" said Hiro, in horror.

"What does it look like? It's a Hiro bromide. I told you I had them all," said Ronfar with a chuckle. "So... one simple question... what is it worth to you to have this NOT duplicated and distributed for the world to see?"

Hiro made a dive for the bromide, but Ronfar had it tucked up his sleeve faster than seemed possible for a bed-ridden man. "Now, you wouldn't want to assault an injured priest, would you? That wouldn't reflect well on you, I must say." Hiro gloured.

"Fine! See if I care!" the younger man said.

"Oh, but you do," smiled Ronfar. "Think of it, my friend. Your male friends will lose all respect for you when they see this. And then, you'll have to fend off the hordes of screaming fangirls. Not to mention how degrading the whole thing is? Are you really willing to be a pin-up boy?"

"What did you just say?" said Hiro, turning bright red.

"That doesn't matter now, does it?" said Ronfar. "What matters is that you hear what I'm about to say now. I suggest you listen carefully, since you know what will happen if you don't..."

"And so," intoned Indalecio, the assigned judge for the second Light quarter-final match of RPGDL season 3, "If both sides are ready, we shall begin."

"Ready," said Tengaar.

"I have drawn daikyou. Terrible fortune!" said Nanami. "Er... I'm ready, I guess." She braced herself for the Earthquake.

"START!" cried the Wise Man-cum-judge.

"A moment!" came a cry. A swordsman in a cape dropped into the centre of the arena with a flourish.

"It's Hiro!" came a cry, followed by lots of mumblings along the lines of 'what is he doing here?'

"Hi, ladies," said Hiro, a sheepish look on his face. "First of all, Tengaar," he turned the maiden of the Warriors' Village. "I deeply apologise for doing this. It... wasn't my desire to do so, but unfortunate circumstances left me with little choice." Tengaar stared angrilly at him.

"And to you, Shrine Maiden," Hiro continued. "My deeper apologies." He raised his sword in the air. "Three strikes and the enemy's out!" he cried, leaping high into the sky. The entire crowd watched in shock. Indalecio just shrugged, and prepared to make the 'Interference!' call as soon as Hiro touched Nanami.

Hiro dropped beside the girl from Hai-Lan. He made three brutal slashes, as the Triple Sword connected... with air. Nanami had dodged. "What the...?" Hiro was interrupted as Nanami lept back, and countered him with a slap to the face. Hiro raised his hand to his right cheek.

And got annoyed. "Dodge THIS!" he cried, leaping up for a Poe Sword. Once again, he only felt air. Then another slap. He raised his hand to his left cheek. "I... don't understand," he said.

Tengaar lowered her hand, the Earth Rune fading. "Revenge Earth," she said, with a smug look on her face. "One hundred percent evade-and-counter. You didn't think I'd let you hurt my opponent, did you?"

"I... I..." stammered Hiro.

"I rather supsect you didn't think at all," she continued, raising her hand again, burying Hiro under an Earthquake.

Hiro grimaced with pain, as the world shook around him. He couldn't fail in his mission! Ronfar's threat had been too dire. He still had his wind magic, which would strike Nanami and give her the win-by-interference, dashing Tengaar's hopes of a Light championship. He waited for the quake to calm. As soon as it did, he turned, crying once more, "Dodge THIS!" as he sent a Cross-Boomerang at Nanami.

And once more hit nothing but air. Hiro stared in shock. It wasn't possible!

"Winner: Tengaar." Indalecio spoke simply. It was only then Hiro noticed that the Earthquake spell had hit Nanami too, and unlike the slayer of Zophar, she hadn't been lucky enough to survive.

Hiro slumped to his knees. "I... failed," he said. "I just can't believe this... I'll never live this down..."

Tengaar wasn't paying attention to him any more, though, as she had earned yet another RPGDL win, and embarrassed another annoying Lunar resident while she was at it.
