Season 42, Week 2
Jayle
(Valkyrie Profile)

Ugh. Thirty-six seasons? Thirty-six? Yes, that's how long Valkyrie Profile's resident crossdresser has had to spend on the sidelines, watching each and every one of her Einherjar brethren get another match before she could finally return to the arena. She'll have to make this comeback count! Her first opponent this time around isn't a fearsome duck, so that at least is a good sign. No, this time Jayle faces Gong, a slow healer with poor physical damage. Exactly the kind of enemy limit fighters like Jayle love to draw. Eternal Raid may be one of the weaker Purify Weird Soul attacks, but every one of the Einherjar's finishers is still synonymous with the words "pain" and "dying" (well, maybe not Sphere Strike) - especially since Gong has, at most, three shots of healing with which to stave off his inevitable demise.

This isn't something you see everyday in the DL arena: A Shining Force character - a physical brawler, no less - with more variety than his opponent! All jokes aside, Gong is a force to be reckoned with in this fight. His damage isn't impressive, true, but he can heal himself fully, and going up against utter mediocrity like Jayle that could be all the difference he needs. Jayle's damage is pretty shabby, so Gong will most likely have plenty of turns to whale away at the Einherjar, after which he can lesiurely Cure 3 or 4 himself back up to shape. With no other real options in this battle, Jayle is forced into a battle of attrition, which she most certaintly can not win. It's as simple as that. With an already-dead transvestite down, and the rest of Light to face, Gong might not have the most bragging rights, but he's certainly capable enough to go far!

Gatewalker
The fight had been fierce indeed. Jayle kept up a furious pace with her assaults, barely giving her opponent space to breathe and coming at him from seemingly every angle. In contrast, Gong had kept his cool, playing a defensive game and focusing on dodging her relentless attacks and keeping himself healed, getting in the occasional powerful counter and trying to simply outlast the Einherjar.

But such a stalemate cannot last forever, as Gong knew very well. He had run out of healing, but his counters and taken their toll on Jayle, and she had no healing at all. It was all or nothing now, he had to end this in the next pass. Suddenly changing his stance from a defensive one to an attacking pose, the mighty monk launched himself at the lady knight as Jayle drew her sword up and uttered the words he had been dreading all fight...

"In the name of my lord! Finishing Strike! Eternal Raid!"

With that cry, she charged as well, coming in faster then Gong had expected. But no matter, this would end in the next strike...one way or the other.

Like a pair of runaway trains the two collided, Gong bringing up a knee strike so powerful it would shatter rock, while Jayle's sword moved at blinding speeds. A moment later they parted...and Gong fell to the floor.

Panting heavily from his collapsed position, the beaten monk was bewildered, "You still stand, woman? Your back should be broken from that blow."

Leaning on her sword for balance, Jayle laughed, "It is. You'd be surprised what you can take after you've died once already."

Gong could only chuckle bitterly as his consciousness slipped away...
